MRMC recognized
for quality care
Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) was recently
recognized for quality of care and patient safety by two
national studies.
The Leapfrog Group released its latest Hospital Safety
Score in late April and MRMC received an “A” rating for
patient safety—the report’s top grade. Designed to rate
how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors,
injuries and infections, the Hospital Safety Score assigns
letter grades to hospitals nationwide.
The Leapfrog Group is a national patient safety
watchdog that uses 30 measures of publicly available
hospital safety data to grade hospitals twice per year. New
this year, the score includes five measures of patientreported experience with the hospital as well as two of the
most common infections, C. diff and MRSA.
To view MRMC’s full score and learn more, visit
hospitalsafetyscore.org.
Truven Health Analytics recently announced its annual
recognition of top health systems. MRMC’s performance
places it in the top 20% in the nation. The data analyzed
by Truven includes survival rates, complications, length of
stay, readmission rates and adherence to core measures.
“Congratulations to our physicians, employees and
volunteers for your dedication to providing outstanding
care as reflected by these recent recognitions for patient
safety and quality care,” said CEO Alan Watson.
The reports come on the heels of the 2016 awards from
CareChex®, a division of Comparion Medical Analytics,
which ranked MRMC number one in Tennessee for overall
hospital care and overall surgical care in the areas of
medical excellence and patient safety. In addition, MRMC
ranked number one in the state in medical excellence for
several specific areas of care or procedures. To learn more,
visit CareChex.com.
Vice President of Human Resources Kaye Brewer and Human
Resources Manager Jessica Bytwerk (l-r) are pictured with
Pharmacy staff members Christie Troutman and Carmen
Allred at the MRMC employee benefits and wellness fair.
Hospital Week
is observed
Hospital Week was observed in May at MRMC and
affiliates, with activities recognizing employees and
physicians for their service.
Hospital Week activities at MRMC included meals for
employees, a benefits and wellness fair and a food truck
event. Employees celebrating service milestones at MRMC
were honored with service awards on May 19.
Lewis Health Center employees were treated to a meal
to recognize Hospital Week.
Marshall Medical Center (MMC) held its annual
service awards banquet on May 10. Additional activities for
MMC employees included a cookout.
At Wayne Medical Center (WMC), Hospital Week
included a series of contests, a cookout and other activities.
WMC presented service awards to employees on May 24.
Family Health Group will recognize employees
receiving service awards on June 9.

LHC receives HHS funding
On May 4, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
announced that more than $260 million in funding would be awarded to
290 health centers across the country for facility renovation, expansion or
construction.
MRMC was among the recipients, receiving a $1 million HHS award for
Lewis Health Center (LHC) in Hohenwald. These funds allow health centers to
increase their patient capacity and to provide additional comprehensive primary
and preventive health services to medically underserved populations.
“This grant funding will enable us to continue to enhance the Lewis Health
Center facility and the services that we provide to our community. We are
honored to be chosen as a recipient and look forward to expanding to serve the
needs of our patients,” said LHC Executive Director Kella Herrick.

Center Program, visit bphc.hrsa.gov.
MRMC represented on
education panel
MRMC CEO Alan Watson was among local and state leaders to join
Tennessee’s education commissioner for a panel event focusing on the
relationship between education and business.
The panel discussion, moderated by The Daily Herald Editor James Bennett,
was held at Columbia State Community College on April 26.
State Education Commissioner Candice McQueen and Tennessee Director
of Workforce Development Ann Thompson participated in the event, along
with Columbia State Community College President Janet Smith, Maury County
Public Schools Director Chris Marczak, Watson and other Maury County
business and education leaders.
The summit was organized by the Maury County Chamber and Economic
Alliance in coordination with Maury County Public Schools to provide insights
into ways to equip students to become strong future employees and leaders and
strengthening the link between the county’s businesses and educators.

Lewisburg practice is third FQHC site
Family Health Group (FHG) Lewisburg, a family medicine practice, was recently
designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) site.
The practice, now known as Lewisburg Family Practice, is one of three FQHC sites
in the Maury Regional organization. The same FHG providers continue to provide care
to patients. Staff members are now associated with Maury Regional.
In addition to accepting commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid and TennCare,
the practice now offers reduced fees for primary care services using a sliding fee schedule
based on household size and income level. Fees for services are as low as $20 under the
new model.
Lewis Health Center in Hohenwald was designated an FQHC in 2013. PrimeCare
Clinic in Columbia and Lewisburg Family Practice are the organization’s second and
third FQHC sites respectively. Statements for services rendered by any of the FQHC sites
come from Lewis Health Center.

Conference in Philadelphia
on April 29.
Their presentation,
“Care Team Conference:
Enhanced Interdisciplinary
Communication,”
focused on developing an
effective team for timely
communication about
patient care needs. The
two shared MRMC’s
experience using LEAN
processes to build an
interdisciplinary team to
address patient care needs
and discharge readiness.
Marshall Medical Center (MMC) and community partners provided free sports
screenings to more than 500 Marshall County student athletes in April and May,
according to MMC Physical Therapy Director Jamie Davis.
Physicians and providers from Family Health Group, Mid-Tennessee Bone & Joint
and other community partners joined MMC staff to conduct free screenings for athletes
at Marshall County, Cornersville and
Forrest high schools on April 28.
There were 388 high school students
screened. Screenings for middle
school students were held on May
5, with 150 students participating in
that clinic. Both events set records for
attendance, according to Davis.
“We appreciate the physicians,
staff members, volunteers and
partnering organizations that assist
Marshall Medical Center in offering
MMC staff members who volunteered to assist
these screenings. This event would
with this year’s sports screenings included (lnot be possible without their time and

FOUNDATION
CELEBRATES
10
YEARS
The Maury Regional Health Care Foundation celebrates its
10th anniversary in 2016. To mark the milestone, the Foundation
will host a Showcase of Services on Monday, June 27, according
to Foundation Executive Director Joe Kilgore.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Auxiliary Conference
Room, featuring booths representing many of the programs and
services the Foundation has supported during its ten-year history.
A reception will be held from 5 until 6 p.m.
The Foundation was formed in 2006 to advance the medical
center’s mission by providing financial support for community
health initiatives, education scholarships and other healthrelated projects to benefit patients and the community. Since
its formation, the Foundation has provided over $1.5 million in
support of these programs and services.
Some of the initiatives supported by the Foundation include
funding medication, medical equipment and transportation
expenses for patients in need; operating a hospitality home for
cancer patients and family members of critically ill patients;
providing wigs and headpieces to cancer patients, and assisting
employees with emergency needs.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Foundation’s donors and
supporters, thousands of patients and community members have
been assisted in the last decade,” said Kilgore. “On behalf of the
Foundation’s board of directors, we invite our valued donors and
supporters to attend the anniversary event.”

Partnership allows pediatric therapy
patients to experience increased mobility
The Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary recently provided funding for
approximately $1,300 in new toys and equipment for pediatric therapy patients. Among the
purchases was a battery-powered ride-on toy, which was modified through a partnership with
Columbia State Community College (CSCC) to be used by children whose mobility is limited.
“We are very grateful to members of the Auxiliary for providing funding for this project,
and to the students and faculty at Columbia State for their assistance in modifying the car for
our young patients,” said Rehabilitation Services Director Cindy Kington.
According to Pediatric Therapist Peggy
Richardson, the idea for the project was based
on the University of Delaware’s Go Baby Go
program, which has conducted research on
the effects of using ride-on toys by children
with limited mobility.
When the Auxiliary purchased the bright
red Volkswagen bus, Richardson reached out
to CSCC Associate Professor Glenn Hudson,
Ph.D., and students in the Engineering
Dynamics program for assistance with the
modifications. The students installed a button
on the steering wheel that duplicates the

“This project gave the students the ability
to take engineering concepts out of a textbook and apply them in a real world situation,” said
Hudson.
Richardson complimented the diligence and thoughtfulness of the students in using their
knowledge and skills to modify the vehicle for young patients.
“You could not have asked for a better partnership,” said Richardson of the CSCC
involvement. “The students did such a thoughtful job.”
Over the past ten years, the Auxiliary has contributed more than $1 million to support
projects that serve the medical center and its patients.
EMS hosts Helicopter and Safety Expo
In celebration of National EMS Week, Maury Regional
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Vanderbilt

May 17 at Whitthorne Middle School in Columbia.
The event featured exhibits of emergency aircraft from
several medical and law enforcement agencies. Personnel
from each department were on hand to discuss the units.
A number of health care, law enforcement and other
organizations participated with booths.
