THE VITALINK Maury Regional Medical Center May 2016 Vol. XXXV, Issue 5 MRMC recognized for quality care Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) was recently recognized for quality of care and patient safety by two national studies. The Leapfrog Group released its latest Hospital Safety Score in late April and MRMC received an “A” rating for patient safety—the report’s top grade. Designed to rate how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections, the Hospital Safety Score assigns letter grades to hospitals nationwide. The Leapfrog Group is a national patient safety watchdog that uses 30 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to grade hospitals twice per year. New this year, the score includes five measures of patientreported experience with the hospital as well as two of the most common infections, C. diff and MRSA. To view MRMC’s full score and learn more, visit hospitalsafetyscore.org. Truven Health Analytics recently announced its annual recognition of top health systems. MRMC’s performance places it in the top 20% in the nation. The data analyzed by Truven includes survival rates, complications, length of stay, readmission rates and adherence to core measures. “Congratulations to our physicians, employees and volunteers for your dedication to providing outstanding care as reflected by these recent recognitions for patient safety and quality care,” said CEO Alan Watson. The reports come on the heels of the 2016 awards from CareChex®, a division of Comparion Medical Analytics, which ranked MRMC number one in Tennessee for overall hospital care and overall surgical care in the areas of medical excellence and patient safety. In addition, MRMC ranked number one in the state in medical excellence for several specific areas of care or procedures. To learn more, visit CareChex.com. FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 10 YEARS The Maury Regional Health Care Foundation celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2016. To mark the milestone, the Foundation will host a Showcase of Services on Monday, June 27, according to Foundation Executive Director Joe Kilgore. The event will begin at 3 p.m. in the Auxiliary Conference Room, featuring booths representing many of the programs and services the Foundation has supported during its ten-year history. A reception will be held from 5 until 6 p.m. The Foundation was formed in 2006 to advance the medical center’s mission by providing financial support for community health initiatives, education scholarships and other healthrelated projects to benefit patients and the community. Since its formation, the Foundation has provided over $1.5 million in support of these programs and services. Some of the initiatives supported by the Foundation include funding medication, medical equipment and transportation expenses for patients in need; operating a hospitality home for cancer patients and family members of critically ill patients; providing wigs and headpieces to cancer patients, and assisting employees with emergency needs. “Thanks to the generosity of the Foundation’s donors and supporters, thousands of patients and community members have been assisted in the last decade,” said Kilgore. “On behalf of the Foundation’s board of directors, we invite our valued donors and supporters to attend the anniversary event.” To learn more about the Foundation, or to make a gift, visit mauryregionalfoundation.com or call 380.4075. THE VITALINK Advertising campaigns recognized Two marketing campaigns promoting services at MRMC were recognized with awards in the 2016 Aster Awards Program. MRMC won a gold Aster award for the billboard, direct mail, print and digital campaign “Get Your Game Back” promoting rehabilitation services. A bronze award was presented for the “Stroke: Know the Signs” campaign to educate the community about risk factors and signs of stroke. The Aster Awards Program is a competition dedicated to recognizing excellence in health care marketing. Entries are evaluated among organizations of similar size and judged by a panel of industry experts. Winning entries are published in Marketing Healthcare Today magazine. The “Get Your Game Back” campaign was also recognized in the 33rd Annual Healthcare Advertising Awards competition conducted by the Healthcare Marketing Report. Partnership allows pediatric therapy patients to experience increased mobility The Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary recently provided funding for approximately $1,300 in new toys and equipment for pediatric therapy patients. Among the purchases was a battery-powered ride-on toy, which was modified through a partnership with Columbia State Community College (CSCC) to be used by children whose mobility is limited. “We are very grateful to members of the Auxiliary for providing funding for this project, and to the students and faculty at Columbia State for their assistance in modifying the car for our young patients,” said Rehabilitation Services Director Cindy Kington. According to Pediatric Therapist Peggy Richardson, the idea for the project was based on the University of Delaware’s Go Baby Go program, which has conducted research on the effects of using ride-on toys by children with limited mobility. When the Auxiliary purchased the bright red Volkswagen bus, Richardson reached out to CSCC Associate Professor Glenn Hudson, Ph.D., and students in the Engineering Dynamics program for assistance with the modifications. The students installed a button on the steering wheel that duplicates the Pictured with Easton Tanner and his mother, Jamie, (kneeling left) are Pediatric Therapist Peggy acceleration mechanism to move the car Richardson (kneeling, right) and (standing, l-r) forward or backward. Richardson complimented the diligence and thoughtfulness of the students in using their knowledge and skills to modify the vehicle for young patients. “You could not have asked for a better partnership,” said Richardson of the CSCC involvement. “The students did such a thoughtful job.” Over the past ten years, the Auxiliary has contributed more than $1 million to support projects that serve the medical center and its patients. EMS hosts Helicopter and Safety Expo In celebration of National EMS Week, Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Vanderbilt LifeFlight hosted the annual Helicopter and Safety Expo on May 17 at Whitthorne Middle School in Columbia. The event featured exhibits of emergency aircraft from several medical and law enforcement agencies. Personnel from each department were on hand to discuss the units. A number of health care, law enforcement and other organizations participated with booths. More than 140 EMS personnel provide service to Maury, Lewis and Wayne counties as part of the organization. —10— Brenda Bishop, RN, provided information about heart attack and hands-only CPR to those attending the EMS expo.
