Wire rod quality
parameters
This catalogue outlines the requirements of standards and production aspects of various types of products: commercial quality
wire rod, high and low carbon wire rod and wire for the production of welding wire, ropes and springs.
Chemical composition
Decarburization
The content of С, Mn, Р, Si, and S is guaranteed at the level
specified in standards and orders, in accordance with the
capabilities.
The depth of the decarburized layer for high
carbon wire rod is ensured at a level not exceeding 2.0% of the wire rod diameter.
The main requirements for Mn and Si content is an Mn to Si ratio
of steel of Mn/Si > 3.
Chemical composition is in line with the tolerances specified
in standards and regulations. It is possible to produce
boron-added and vanadium-added wire rod.
Mechanical properties
Mechanical properties are ensured in line with the requirements
of standards and orders, in accordance with the manufacturer's
capabilities as shown in the enclosed tables.
Surface quality
The depth of surface defects on wire rod (slivers,
tears, rolled-in scale, laps, rolled blisters, lamination,
burrs) in ensured at a maximum level of 0.2 mm.
Some mechanical damage such as marks, dents,
scratches and ripples are acceptable. The depth of
these defects shall not exceed 0.20 mm.
Scale quantity
Macro and micro structure
Requirements for macro and micro structure shall be agreed
upon additionally, if required (shrink holes, porosity, blowholes,
grain size, structurally free ferrite and cementite, etc.)
The quantity of scale is ensured at a level of up
to 6 kg/t for low carbon wire rod and up to 8
kg/t for high carbon wire rod.

Brief description
of the production process
Yenakiieve Iron and Steel Works and its branch in Makiivka is an integrated steelmaking plant. It
specializes in commercial billet, medium sections (beams, channels, angles, flat bulbs), light
sections, rebar, and wire rod.
Billet production includes open stream casting or shrouded-stream casting (depending on steel
grades and customer requirements).
The production facilities of Yenakiieve Iron and Steel Works consist of three blast furnaces, a basic
oxygen furnace steelmaking plant (three BOF’s and two ladle furnaces, each with six-strand billet
concasters) and three rolling mills.
Wire rod and rounds (5.5–13.0 mm) are rolled at the 150 continuous two-strand wire rod mill,
which has an annual capacity of about 800,000 tons. The mill features two staged controlled
cooling, finished product packaging, and process control automation.
