July - Issue 7 - Country SA PHN
Volume 2 Issue 7 July 2016 CEO Message In recent weeks in the lead up to the Federal election, there was much reporting of changes to headspace and concerns were raised that headspace sites would be closing. Clearly in the context of an election, messages can become confused and did not reflect simple realities. Kim Hosking headspace is not going away. Our reality, is that headspace in our region and indeed nationally, is headed into some new and potentially exciting places. Prior to the announcement of the election the Commonwealth determined that headspace sites would be funded through the PHN’s, rather than the previous funding through headspace national, based out of Melbourne. Also within this new direction was provided the opportunity to move from what was described as a common national model, to one that is potentially better connected locally. In our region there are currently four headspace sites, one each in Berri, Murray Bridge, Port Augusta and Mount Gambier. The CSAPHN is taking the opportunity with the new flexibility to channel some funds to these sites to expand their hours a little into the later afternoon, early evening and we are considering other opportunities to expand services, through the development of satellite or outreach activities in other communities. headspace is a fantastic model for youth mental health service and support, well established and well utilised in the four current communities. Working with the headspace sites we would be seeking to expand the reach of headspace, both in local hours of access and regionally, to enhance current services and meet regional needs. CSAPHN welcomes Jane Williams to the Practice Support Team Country SA PHN are pleased to welcome Jane Williams, Practice Support Officer to the team. Jane broadens the skills set of the practice support team and support capacity building for practices. In particular Jane will be able to : Inside this Edition Assist practices with the drafting and use of relevant policies and procedures in general practice; Accreditation Tips 2 Mentor and support practice managers in accreditation processes; and ACRRM SA and NT Council member nominations 2 Primary Healthcare Nurse and Practice Manager Needs in Country SA Support general practice in the application and upskilling for Standards 5 Accreditation. 3 BreastScreen SA be part of our circle of friends 4 Cancer Project for ATSI Women 4 National Diabetes Services Scheme 4 Practice Toolbox 6 Professional Development 7-10 Jane will be visiting general practices with either Sarah Wiles or Julie Di Rito on their regular visits. Sunday 24 July to Saturday 30 July 2016 Accreditation Tips Avoid some of the pitfalls which often occur on the day of your Accreditation. Elder Abuse can be stopped, recognise the signs General Practitioners: GPs will need to produce all current GP registrations, copies of Indemnity Insurance and CPD points for each GP. This is an area where you may have to ask more than once to receive the required paperwork. GPs must also have completed CPR in the previous 3 years. Often this is overlooked when the Accreditation date is in the middle of the RACGP triennium. The immunisation status of GPs are also required as is a position description. The position description is very important, particularly when a GP plays a specific role in the practice i.e. the management of vaccines and cold chain. As a health professional, you play an important role in recognising and responding to Elder Abuse. Elder Abuse is very complex and often involves the people, relatives or friends, known and trusted by the older person. Workers in the health sector are often the first to witness Elder Abuse and may be in a position to help. So it’s important to be aware of the signs of Elder Abuse and know what you can do and where you can go for more information and support. It is important that you, as a professional in the health sector, have a clear understanding of the rights of older people and how these rights can be protected. This includes being aware of the signs of elder abuse and knowing where to go for help and advice. A new elder abuse wallet card is available to help raise awareness about elder abuse. If you would like free copies of the new wallet card resource to provide to your clients/ patients you can download from the website or email Office for the Ageing to place your order. Please note the wallet card comes in bundles of 50. Call the SA Elder Abuse Prevention Phone Line on 1800 372 310 or visit www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/stopelderabuse for more information. Practice Nurses: RNs and ENs again, current registration is required. Position descriptions are necessary and where the nursing staff are involved in vaccines, cold chain management, infection control processes and sterilization, these details must be contained in the position description. ACRRM SA and NT Council member nominations now open The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) is pleased to invite nominations for election for the College Council representatives for the South Australia and Northern Territory. CPR certificates must be available for each nursing staff member and immunisation history. Practice Staff: The immunisation status, position descriptions and CPR certificates for all practice staff are to be presented. Nominations must be received by 9am on Monday 1 August 2016. For nominations to be considered valid, they must comply with the following criteria: Education and training certificates must be available for review. Nominees for these positions must be financial Ordinary Members with a registered primary contact address with the College within the State or Territory for which they seek election. The Practice: If your sterilization is done off site, please have a certificate from the Sterilization provider available. Any after hours home visits done by an external body must provide the practice with a certificate of accreditation. All electrical equipment must be tagged and tested yearly and the tags clearly visible. Each Ordinary Member based in South Australia or the Northern Territory is entitled to nominate one candidate only for election to the relevant position. Nominations must be made in writing using the Nomination Form and be signed by both the nominee and nominating member. For further information, and to download the nomination form, please visit the ACRRM website. 2 Primary Healthcare Nurse and Practice Manager Needs in Country SA At the end of 2015 and into early 2016, Country SA PHN undertook needs surveys with both Primary Healthcare (PHC) Nurses and Practice Managers throughout country South Australia. The results of the surveys have been collated and the information obtained will be utilised to inform Country SA PHN at both a local and State level in the support of education and networking opportunities for PHC Nurses and Practice Managers into the near future. PHC Nurse and Practice Manager Networks are in various stages of development across SA. In the North West region of SA, we currently have two Practice Managers Networks, one in Port Augusta which includes Port Pirie and surrounds, and one in Whyalla. Both networks are newly formed and still finding their grounding. In the Eyre Peninsula a combined approach of both PHC Nurses and Practice Managers meeting together has been taken. The Eyre Peninsula Practice Network was established in August 2015 with Port Lincoln indicated as the preferred venue for the meetings. Four meetings have been held and well attended by practice staff throughout Eyre Peninsula. In the Central region of SA, PHC Nurse Network meetings have been held thus far in the Barossa and Adelaide Hills regions. The Barossa network attracted nurses from a variety of settings including general practice, community nursing and aged care and also a wide geographical reach including Clare and the Yorke Peninsula. Practice Manager meetings have been held in the Central region areas of the Fleurieu, Adelaide Hills and Barossa. Both the PHC Nurse and Practice Manager network meetings provide the opportunity for practice staff to share ideas and network which is particularly beneficial for staff from the remote practices and there is often a guest speaker from a relevant local service or from within the PHN. The educational topics and updates provided at the meetings have included: APNA – Support for PHC Nurses Immunisation System changes – challenging to providers and patients Quality Improvement MBS Item numbers Care plans PenCS update My Health Record Aged Care and mental health updates As establishment and ongoing support of PHC Nurse and Practice Manager Networks continues, Country SA PHN, through the Regional Strategies team, is keen to work closely with both PHC Nurses and Practice Managers to ensure that the networks are locally relevant. With recent recruitment now complete, Regional Strategies has a full contingent of team members across Country SA. 3 Your local Regional Strategies Team Regional Strategies team for contact locally: North & West: Regional Manager, Jane Cooper [email protected] and Regional Coordinators, Michelle Dunemann [email protected] & Venessa Blinman [email protected]. BreastScreen SA be part of our circle of friends BreastScreen SA (BSSA) are on a mission to strengthen our circle of friends and screen more women than ever before in the hope of finding more early stage breast cancers. This gives our friends (the women of South Australia) a greater chance for simpler breast cancer treatments and more successful outcomes. With only 1 in 2 South Australian women aged over 50 having a regular breast screen, that’s almost certainly someone you know and care about who isn’t taking part. We’ve set ourselves a target to screen an additional 5000 women by 30 June 2016, with the hope of finding another 30 -40 breast cancers. So far we’ve screened an additional 4,264 women. But we need your help to spread the word and share the love! For engagement at a State level please contact: Suzanne Mann, Senior Manager Regional Strategies & Service Design [email protected] or Jenny Philip-Harbutt, Manager State Partnerships [email protected]. Can you help us? If you know a woman aged over 40 who isn’t screening every two years with BSSA, encourage her to become a friend of BSSA by calling 13 20 50 to make an appointment. Or if you’re a woman aged over 40 and thinking about joining our circle of friends by having a screening mammogram, you can read more about what is involved and call 13 20 50 to make an appointment. National Diabetes Services Scheme As of 1 July 2016, changes to the NDSS identified include: People with type 1 diabetes will still have unrestricted access to diabetes supplies, however, these items will no longer be available through Diabetes Australia, so those who usually order bulk supplies from Diabetes Australia, will have to get their supplies through their local pharmacy after this date. Insulin pump users will no longer be able to obtain pump consumables through Diabetes Australia. As for test strips and needles, these will now only be available through their local community pharmacy. People with type 2 diabetes not requiring insulin will be limited to an initial 6 month supply, unless their medical practitioner or other authorised health professional feels there is a clinical need to continue monitoring and authorises additional supplies. Individuals with diabetes who don’t currently purchase NDSS products through a pharmacy are encouraged to find a local community pharmacy to be their regular access point . People with type 2 diabetes requiring insulin will still have unrestricted access to blood test strips, available for purchase through their local pharmacy. Women with gestational diabetes will continue to have unrestricted access to blood test strips for the duration of their pregnancy.
