Have You Taken A Trip to Los Vega?
By Sean Claes
With the influx of new
businesses and growth happening
around Kyle, it’s interesting to see
that the best “new” place to eat, at
least to this food lover, is neither in a
growth area or in a new building.
It’s Los Vega Mexican Restaurant
(721 N. Old Highway 91).
If that address doesn’t make
sense… it’s the southbound feeder
road you exit from I-35 where the
Flea Market is (exit 213)… It’s the
same road (just a little north) on
which CVS is being built. You’ll know
it by the HUGE sign that is the
colors of the Mexican Flag.
Enough about the logistics…
The food there is excellent. I prefer the
fajita plate. It’s really more than one
man should eat and it’s just the way I
like it. sautéed with a few veggies and
served up piping hot.
Of course, everything is
piping hot. They don’t start cooking
most dishes until they are ordered.
And I learned from my last trip that
even if you call in to pick the food
up, they won’t begin cooking their
awesome
chicken
flautas
until you
get there.
If you’re in
a hurry, this
may not be
the place
to eat, but
that’s where the joy of their drivethrough comes in. I like to call them
(268-8570) and place my order about
15 minutes before I want to eat. Bingo.
Even better, when the kiddos
fall asleep in the car and I don’t want
to wake them up by going home quite
yet, I’ll drive up to the drive-through
window and order dinner… then take
a little cruise to see what is happening in town… maybe take a few Kyle,
Texas Daily Photo pictures (shameless
plug - kyledailyphoto.blogspot.com)
and then circle back to Los Vega and
my dinner is ready.
Of course, we HAVE eaten
inside the restaurant quite a few times.
It really reminds me of growing up in
Laredo. The atmosphere is far from
polished, the employees seem to be
family, the vibe is relaxed, and yes...
the fresh and fantastic Mexican Food
that I only wish my mom could
have made.
Now the real question. The
price. Well, in early February we
picked up four plates (that included
rice and beans) for $32.37. The order
was beef fajitas, flautas, enchiladas,
and tostadas. They threw in a big bag
of chips and enough salsa (just spicy
enough) to satisfy everyone’s need.
This fed four adults and 2 kiddos under four years old… and I had enough
leftover to take for lunch the next day.
So, if you’re looking all over
town for a “new” place to eat, check
Los Vega out.

Hello From Fallujah
It’s actually cold here in Fallujah,
Iraq. I’ve been here for over 5 months
now and still find it hard to believe
that most of my ideas about Iraq
and its people have been shattered.
I arrived here in September of 2007
with the way I thought things would
be and even imagined myself in a
more hostile environment.
The training and preparation we
received before arriving in country
was intense. We spent over 2 months
at Fort Dix, New Jersey acclimating
both physically and mentally for
this deployment. I had lost close to
25 pounds by the time we left. The
intense training prepared me for an
Iraq that I had heard so much about.
Imagine then a flight from
friendly skies to the battleground
of Iraq involving a short flight from
Kuwait to a little-known airbase in
southern Iraq. Stepping off the flight,
my first sense was of barricades and
30 foot cement walls. After a twoday wait for the convoy that would
take us to Fallujah it finally arrives in
the dead of night. We are all loaded
onto trucks and begin the tense and
cautious hour and half ride to Camp
6
Fallujah. We pass through the city of
Fallujah at 2:00 am and see only a few
people on the streets. We arrive at the
base safe and a little incredulous.
I am posted to the JCC as the
Night Watch Officer where I work
in a joint operations center with the
regional Iraqi police headquarters
located in the city center. In the five
months I have been here I have grown
to respect and admire my Iraqi peers.
They are a concerned police force
willing to put their lives on the line
for their community and families.
The local citizens are genuinely glad
that we are here and wave and shout
greetings as we pass in convoys.
The city is living in relative peace
now, shops and schools are opening
everyday. People are beginning
to crowd the markets again and
we even see soccer matches at the
local stadium.
This has been a life changing
experience for me. A lot of the
misconceptions I had about the Iraqi
people have been resolved. The Iraqis
are a kind and respectful people
who only want to live in peace and
with our help are beginning to gain
control of their towns and lives once
again. By letting their own police and
communities be a part of the process
we give them a sense ownership—as
it should be.
Many Kyle residents have sent
care packages with toys and supplies
that we have delivered to the local
children and schools. I want to thank
you all for these donations and also
for your prayers of peace and safety.
I have personally seen what your
gifts and prayers have done for the
people here.

It’s Yard of the Month
Time Again . . .
By: Christina Baese, PC Landscape Committee
As with last year, we’re continuing the same schedule
to meet our PC Press deadlines and keep the awards
timely. As you may recall, our Yard of the Month
schedule runs from the 15th to the 15th. Yard of the
Month will run for 6 months from April 15th to
October 15th.
We will judge from the 1st to the 10th of the month, and
we will award prizes and place signs on the 15th of that
month. Award recipients will appear in the PC Press
about the 1st of the following month, and then, we
begin the next round.
For clarification, here’s an example for the first month:
◊ Judge April 1st to April 10th
◊ Place in May’s PC Press by April 10th
◊ Award April 15th
◊ Appear in PC Press about May 1st
◊ Remove signs May 15th and issue awards for
the next month.
Needless to say, have your gardens ready for judging
by April 1st and every 1st of the month though
September 1st of 2008.
If your neighbor or spouse has worked hard and has a
great looking yard, please email
[email protected]
with your nominations!

Tree Talk— Trees and Soil Aeriation
The Spring is one of the best
times of the year to address improving the soil conditions in your yard.
The existing soil can be challenging
to work with because the soil is thin,
frequently barren, atop large rocks,
and compacted from construction.
Modifying the soil to meet the expectation of a new neighborhood includes
a little work in the Spring.
Having healthy trees and a nice
lawn includes soil that is aerated.
That is a soil that has many air pockets. The benefits include: tree roots
thrive, increasing the activity of soil
microorganisms; increasing water, nutrient and oxygen movement; improving rooting; enhancing infiltration of
rainfall; and helping prevent run-off.
Aeration can be done mechanically or by using a manual tool. The
core aerator is best. This machine has
hollow tines or spoons mounted on a
disk or drum. It extracts 1/2 to 3/4
inch diameter cores of soil and deposits them on your lawn. Aeration holes
are typically 1-6 inches deep and 2-6
inches apart. These aerators may
be rented at garden centers, but some
lawn or landscape companies will
perform the service for a fee. Be sure
that the machine has hollow tines
or spoons to bring the soil core to
the surface. Look for machines with
deeper tines and weight over the tines
for better penetration into the soil.
The weekends are busy rental times
so plan early and reserve an aerator
in advance. These machines are large
and heavy; they will require special
handling and larger vehicles for transport. Many people cooperate with
neighbors and make it a group effort,
thereby lowering the overall cost. If
renting, be sure you are instructed and
comfortable with the operation of the
machine before bringing it home.
Alternatively hand tools, and shoe
spikes, can be used to penetrate the
soil. These efforts are a little more
time consuming and do not perform
as effectively as the mechanical
aerator. Devices include large tines,
almost pitchfork-like, which can penetrate the ground. These devices
typically do not remove plugs of soil,

but pierce the ground for aeration.
Please keep in mind, that if you have
sodded your yard within the last year,
you should refrain from all of these
aeration techniques. Before aerating,
the soil should be moist but not wet. It
is most preferable to water your lawn
thoroughly two days prior to aerating,
so the tines can penetrate deeper into
the soil. If aerating after prolonged
rainfall it is important to wait until
the soil has dried somewhat so soil
cores do not stick in the hollow tines.
Aerate the soil in at least two different
directions to insure good coverage. Be
careful on slopes, as well as near your
home and landscape beds. Also, if you
have a sprinkler system, be sure to
mark the location of the heads and any
shallow lines.
By performing this type of improvement, your soil will progress over
time, and your trees will have a better
likelihood to grow and remain healthy.
If you have any concerns about trees,
visit treesaregood.com to learn more
about their maintenance needs.

Plum Creek residents donated about 150 of their Christmas Trees to the fish
habitat effort this year! In a nutshell, these trees provide a safe haven for fish
from predators and create spawning habitat. Smaller fish have a better chance
to reach maturity. All the while, they help create an even better fishin’ hole. If
you’d like to learn more about this effort, check out the article at http://www.
tpwmagazine.com/archive/2006/dec/scout2/, which discusses several types
of artificial habitat.
In addition, several folks have spent their time preparing and dropping
the trees in the lake over a few weekends. Special thanks to Anna Madrona, Darby Rodriguez, Dave Brown, Les Vaughan,Sam Guerrero, Christina Baese, Cale Baese, and Mike Davis. THANK YOU! If you’re interested in joining the Lake Committee, please email Chair Mike Davis at

March 2008
Make A Splash This Season
Starting in 2005 by Plum Creek
residents, the Hays Swim Club has
grown from its humble beginnings
into an ambassador for our Plum
Creek community and surrounding
areas in the sport of swimming. And,
as we move forward in 2008, we look
to offer aquatic programs for all Plum
Creek residents-- young and old, and
continue developing a community
culture of aquatic facility appreciation
and water safety.
Originally formed in response
to resident triathletes in search of
activities for their kids, the then-called
Plum Creek Dolphins offered a competitive outlet for 20-25 Plum Creek
kids, ages 5-15, keeping them busy
and active for the summer and introducing them to competitive swimming.
We quickly realized that the
untapped talent, passion and appreciation for swimming was bursting
right here in Hays. Again, in response
to residents, we reorganized as the
Hays Swim Club for 2007. While sure
to maintain over 75% Plum Creek resident membership, we opened slots for
surrounding area swimmers and more
than tripled in size.
During 2007, we joined the
Capital City Summer League (CCSL),
and the Hays Swim Club at Plum
Creek served notice to league teams
and premier communities in Austin
that swimming was a sport on the
rise in Hays County, with Plum Creek
at the epicenter. In our first year, we
proudly and positively represented
the community, Kyle, and the whole
county by strongly competing against
teams up to three times bigger, and
even capturing a few league records
by one of our very own Plum Creek
residents!
Now, in 2008, we have been
asked to host two league meets, giving
Plum Creek the opportunity to not
only showcase it’s fine facilities and
athletic talent, but also showcase why
it is one of the fastest growing, and
most desirable communities in Central
Texas.
Along with the summer
league program, we also offer a yearround, USA Swimming-sanctioned
competitive swim program for young
athletes, looking for alternatives to
traditional fall/winter contact sports
or simply a cross-training opportunity to enhance conditioning for other
sports. This program served to put
Plum Creek and Hays on the swimming map at a different level of competition all together. It also provided
Hays Swim Club the opportunity to
give back to the community, holding
a team fundraiser to purchase equipment for the McNaughton facility all
at zero cost to homeowners.
In addition to our Summer
League and year-round USA Swimming team programs, we have heard
the requests to provide something
for everyone else that may not strive
for the fastest 50yd freestyle time,
but would still like to develop more
confidence in the water themselves or
instill water safety and respect in their
children. continued on pg. 17
Plum Creek Community E-mail Addresses
In order to connect better with the community, we have created E-mail addresses to meet
your needs to get in touch with the people responsible for making our neighborhood such a great
place to live. Please feel free to drop us an E-mail. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

March 2008
continued from pg. 15
So, in the coming months, the Hays
Swim Club will be introducing a
learn-to-swim program for ages 4
and up, through our partnership
with SwimStart, a 2bfast Training
program. We are also introducing a
series of adult swim clinics, open to
any adult that would like access to
four ASCA and USA Swimming
certified coaches that also just happen
to be residents in Plum Creek.
We have already kicked off
a series of free swim clinics, entitled
“Swim Fest 2008,” for all school-aged
kids in the Hays Consolidated School
District through a partnership with
the Buda YMCA, in an effort to
promote the sport of swimming.
With two remaining Swim Fest
sessions, we encourage any schoolaged youngsters in Plum Creek to
come on out and see what swimming
opportunities are available to them.
(Registration is available at www.
haysswim.org.)
All of the lessons, teams and clinics,
while promoting swimming, also aim
to promote water safety and respect
for aquatic facilities through proper,
organized instruction and supervised, safe fun at the pools. These
programs also provide the opportunity for our older swimmers to give
back to our community, teaching and
inspiring our younger swimmers and
providing a positive role model.
So, 2008 looks to be an exciting year in the pool, with programs
and opportunity for every Plum
Creek resident. Certainly, if you have
any questions about our programs
or general club mission, please don’t
hesitate to contact one of the coaches
and/or visit our website at www.
haysswim.org. See you at the pool!
