CEO’s Review
Through every rock
The first quarter of the year has been busy in a positive way for
Robit, and we have launched a few large projects. Many of our
customers used up their stocks at the turn of the year and are
now replenishing them at full speed. I believe that this spring
will also bring a change to the unstable market situation.
Our main goals in 2013 are to expand our ground drilling product offering and to further increase sales of complete ground
drilling packages. The suitability of our products to the varying
needs of our customers is paramount – that is why customers
are an essential part of our product development. Our goal is
for our tools to enable drilling through any type of rock.
In the spring, we will launch big-end products especially for
ground drilling, including a pilot with a diameter of one metre.
These products will be on show for the first time at the Bauma
Trade Fair, which will take place in Germany in mid-April.
“More holes – More value” has always been the force that
drives Robit Rocktools forward. This year, we are seeking to
expand our exports to cover more than 100 countries. The road
towards achieving that target has not been an easy one; it is
the result of long-term efforts coupled with the right mindset.
During the year, we will be present at a number of trade fairs,
showcasing our new products – we look forward to seeing
you there! Our doors are also open at our plants in Finland
and in Korea.
A warm thank you to all for the past year and I wish you great
success in 2013,
Jussi Rautiainen

Multiple search options
and more user-friendly service
Robit.fi has been revamped
After a complete makeover, Robit Rocktools’ website is just about
ready to welcome users to the new service. The primary goal of
the thoughtfully designed website is to make it easier to find
Robit products.
The new website has a clearer layout and a fresh
visual look. The overall common thread in the site is
user friendliness.
“Our products will be easier to find on the new website, and there will be more search options. Through
our new pages, users can also learn about what our
Korean plant has to offer,” says Jari Silver, head of PR
& Marketing at Robit Rocktools.
Customers will be able to easily and conveniently
find the products they need directly on the new website, for example, for certain jobs or projects.
“If our customer is working on, say, a thermal well,
they will be able to find all the products we recommend
for that purpose on the website, in one go. Naturally,
they will also be able to find our products using keywords or by searching according to product category.”
Several language versions
The new website has been designed to support tablet
updates as much as possible.
“When we add new products to our website, an
update will also be available for the iPad app used by
our sales staff. In addition, the website will be scalable
and the pages easy to read on the computer screen,
tablet or mobile device,” Silver explains.
The revamped website will be launched in late
March or early April in Finnish, English and Korean prior
to the Bauma Trade Fair in Germany.
“Our goal is to have other language versions, such as
Russian, French, Spanish, Chinese, Swedish and Portuguese, ready by June,” lists Silver.
Meeting customers’ needs
The last time Robit’s website was redesigned was a
few years ago.
“Back then, we focussed mostly on the visual
aspects. These upcoming changes are primarily
structural. Seeing the project through with us is our
reliable cooperation partner, the media company Bermuda, with whom we also developed our iPad app
last year.
4 Robit Rocktools Bulletin 1 /2013
“We are very pleased with the end result, and we
believe that our customers will be too. Our objective
is to serve their unique needs and to support our customers in their goals in every way we can. This will
allow us to build even stronger ties of cooperation with
them,” says Silver.

World’s most advanced portable signalling system
Robit® Air Horn
In autumn 2012, Robit introduced the Robit® Air Horn, a
new portable signalling device that provides unparalleled
reliability for industrial and commercial safety applications.
The Robit® Air Horn is powered by a rechargeable
14.4 volt battery. When fully charged, the unit
is capable of delivering 500 sound blasts of 120
decibels with no decrease in volume, unlike compressed air horns.
Being gas free, the Robit® Air Horn is an
environmentally friendly choice, eliminating the
need for ordering, storing and disposing of costly
gas canisters. The easy-to-operate and lightweight device is safe to use in both hot and cold
weather conditions.
“Robit has always tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible. This is reflected in our
heat treatment, packing, green steel and recycling
policy. The Robit® Air Horn fits perfectly with this
philosophy. It is a gas-free device and fully reusable, and yet a very powerful and reliable signalling
system,” says David Delorme, Robit’s VP Sales
and Marketing.
it isn’t entirely environmentally safe. The Robit®
Air Horn is an environmentally friendly choice for
blast signalling, making the use of refrigerants
completely unnecessary for this purpose.
“We believe that both big and small actions
are necessary to achieve major environmental
changes,” concludes Delorme.
No harmful gas discharged
Earlier the original gas they used for these air horns
was punching holes in the ozone layer, and it was
banned and replaced with another refrigerant.
“While it is true that the new gas does not
affect the ozone layer, according to a recent study

YP Robit’s first
Open DAYS event
was a success
Robit’s annual Open Days tradition was taken to South
Korea last autumn. The event was held in October and
attracted more than 100 visitors to YP Robit’s Donghae plant.
6 Robit Rocktools Bulletin 1 /2013
To great applause, the drilling demo featured the drilling rig
of YP Robit’s Korean cooperation partner, Junjin:
Rig Model:
Junjincsm JD-1500E
Engine:
Cummins 325 hp at 2,100 rpm (Made in USA)
Rock drill: Yamamoto Hydraulic YH200 (Japan)
Compressor: GHH RAND (13.9m3/min, Germany)
Hyd. Pump:
Bosch Rexroth (Germany)
Feed motor: Tejin Seiki (Japan)
More on the drilling equipment used in the demo:
Drill bit:
Robit HTG60RG140D

All of Junjin’s drill rigs come
equipped with Robit’s drill tools:
shanks, rods and button bits.
A
mong the invited guests
were YP Robit’s customers, a group of people from
Gangwon-do’s local administration, officials from the City of
Donghae, FTZ officials, and company’s
subcontractors, raw material suppliers
and several other representatives. During the one-day event, visitors had the
opportunity to learn about YP Robit’s
plant and products.
“This was our first Open Days event
in South Korea, and our goal is to make
it an annual successful tradition, just
like the one in Finland. The objective
is to bring together our various stakeholders and present our company’s
operations – not to mention doing
business and having fun!” says Mikko
Mattila, head of the company’s South
Korean operations.
A unique drilling demo
The event focussed on presenting the
Korean plant, with particular emphasis on the manufacture of rock-drilling
tools. Rods, shanks and couplings are
just a few examples of what was featured at the event.
“In addition, we arranged a drilling
demonstration using our Korean partner Junjin’s drill rig, which we used to
drill test rock on the grounds of the
plant. The button bit used was one
made by Robit in Finland. The demo
was a smashing success, and proof of
the high quality and performance of
Robit’s products.
The highlight of the Open Days
event was the official award granted
to Robit in recognition of the company’s export activities. Mattila accepted
the award, granted by the Donghae
Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of
the company.
“Our business activities in South
Korea got in full swing last autumn. It
was great to have our work recognised,
and it proves that we are headed in the
right direction. The goal is to further
expand our operations in the Asian
markets this year,” says Mattila.
A full programme in
a relaxed atmosphere
Entertainment was provided in the form
of a number of impressive dance performances, Korean folk music, and the pop
hit Gangnam Style. The visitors were
also treated to delights from the sea.
The guests were also invited to take
part in various light-hearted games
and competitions that were set up on
the grounds, such as shooting, balloon
darts, horse-back riding and a waterballoon tournament.
“The event was very successful.
The yard was packed with people, and
you could hear the constant sound of
cheerful banter against a backdrop
of music. All of the plant’s staff were
present, so the guests were also able
to get acquainted with them. It was
nice to see so many of our cooperation
partners present so that they could see
exactly what we do in Korea. The event
will most likely attract even more visitors in future,” says Mattila.

S
uministros Guillemet,
S.L. is a Spanish distributor that specializes in consumables
and represents the best
worldwide brands. The company has extensive knowledge of the materials and
machinery used in blasting,
excavation, and crushing, for
example. They currently distribute Robit Rocktools drill
steel directly in Spain.
“We have a young and
dynamic team and a friendly
atmosphere that complements the objectives of the
company. Every day we try to
generate a constant flow of cooperation between
the different departments to facilitate the work,”
says General Manager Angel Blanco.
Competitive advantages from
high quality and innovation
Suministros Guillemet, S.L. provides a wide range
of wear parts and consumables for mining, quarrying and public works. The company’s competitive
advantage lies in the high quality of the products,
innovation, and a qualified and experienced group
of technicians.
“Our way of working clearly distinguishes us
from the competition because our daily work aims
at monitoring the market every day, looking for
new products that are of the highest quality and
more advanced than those of our competitors.
We put the products to the test and analyse the
results. The results of the stress tests have helped
consumers to recognise the superior quality of
Robit’s products. This is a competitive advantage,”
says Blanco.
“Almost all of our materials come from Central Europe, but our main product line is Robit
Rocktools drill steel of Finnish origin. Robit has
an advantage against others suppliers with their
innovative design, high durability and quality, and
a fantastic team.”
Mutual understanding right from the start
“Our cooperation with Robit Rocktools started
nearly ten years ago. We have had a great mutual
understanding since the beginning and the relationship is very fluid,” says Blanco.
“Suministros Guillemet, S.L. is committed to
provide the best and most current products on the
market. That’s why we go to several mining and
construction exhibitions around the world every
year looking for new products and partners. It was
at one of these exhibitions, in Paris, that we found
that white button bit from a company that perfectly matched our philosophy,” recounts Blanco.
“Robit provides us with great products and
technical assistance, and we represent their products with strong professionalism. In addition,
we collect information in the field by performing
stress tests on the products in different mines
and with different types of rock. We forward the
customers’ concerns and ideas for design improvements to Robit and help them make their products even better.”
A solid partner
“The best part of our collaboration with Robit is
the closeness of the relationship and the support
they provide. This allows us to provide our customers with innovative products of great quality
and personalised technical service.”
The cooperation with
Robit goes both ways.
According to Blanco, Robit’s best features
added to quality of their products are reliability,
trust, professionalism and sense of responsibility
of the company.
“As a partner, Robit is a friend that never fails.
They provide us with all their knowledge and support, which makes it easier for us to work with
the customers. At Robit they take responsibility for any problems that may arise with their
products, and they listen to our requests for new
designs if needed.”
“As an official distributor of Robit, Suministros
Guillemet, S.L. benefits from Robit’s prestige. The
credibility of the company’s internationally recognised products makes many potential customers
listen to us and open to trying our products,” concludes Blanco.

With top products and
services to long-term
collaboration
Länsimetro’s challenging construction work
in Helsinki demands wide-ranging expertise.
Kalliorakennus-Yhtiöt ensured a successful
end result in drilling a shaft for Länsimetro
using Robit’s products.
The westbound metro line is expected
to be operational in 2015. Excavation
work for the metro tunnel is currently
under way, after which the construction work will begin. Construction of the
track and stations will begin this year,
and test runs will be carried out in 2015.
Kalliorakennus’s part in the Länsimetro project concerns excavation
of the Lauttasaari tunnel. The work
encompasses two parallel metro tunnels that are approximately two kilometres long, as well excavation work
for the Lauttasaari station and its
access points. Kalliorakennus is also
excavating the Karhusaari and Keilaniemi work tunnels.
10 Robit Rocktools Bulletin 1 /2013
Last autumn, Kalliorakennus-Yhtiöt
carried out the work on a shaft for the
Myllykallio line, which is part of the
Lauttasaari project. An emergency exit
and an air conditioning channel were
drilled into the bedrock.
The metro tunnel shafts are located
at intervals of approximately 600
metres and extend to ground level.
They will serve as an emergency exit,
smoke vent, pressure equalisation system and ventilation system. In the middle of the shaft there will be a fireproof
emergency escape staircase. The vertical shafts will be located above ground,
in public street and park areas.
“We set tough quality requirements
for the project, as the work outcome
must be exact. We drilled the excavation holes for the shaft from the top
right down to the bottom, whereas
drilling is normally carried out from
both the bottom and the top. It was
crucial that the holes turned out
straight,” explains site manager Martti
Kähkönen from Kalliorakennus.
“The drilling was challenging, as the
shaft is very deep – 44 metres, with a
surface area of 68 square metres. We
used Robit Rocktools’s special equipment to make sure the drilling holes
were straight. There was also an expe-
rienced drill operator making sure the
work was up to scratch,” says Kähkönen.
Involved in the development work
Kähkönen’s history with Robit goes back
quite a few years. He took part in the
development work on Robit’s bits way
back in 1994.
“All of the bits we use are from
Robit, because they are familiar products for me. I participated in the bit
development work for the first time
many years ago. That’s when we developed the company’s bits for hard rock,”
recalls Kähkönen.
“Close and continuous co-operation
with the end users is an integral part
of our operating strategy. It helps us to
ensure the outstanding performance
of our products,” says Timo Rahkama,
Robit’s Sales Manager.
In addition to the shared history,
Robit’s wide service offering has also
impressed Kalliorakennus.
“Robit is a reliable partner, but their
bit-sharpening service was also a major
reason behind why we chose them as
co-operation partner in the Länsimetro
project,” says Kähkönen.
Robit and Lemminkäinen
to collaborate in tunnel excavation
A modern parking facility called Kivisydän (“Heart of Stone”) is
currently under construction in the bedrock of Oulu’s city centre.
It measures up as one of the largest parking projects in Finland. The
excavation and reinforcement work on the project is being handled by
Finland’s leading underground construction company, Lemminkäinen
Corporation, with its 40 years of experience in the business.
Robit Rocktools and Lemminkäinen
have worked in close cooperation for
nearly a decade, mostly in ground drilling. Kivisydän is the companies’ tunnel
excavation pilot project.
“The project extends our good partnership to the area of tunnel construction. Robit is supplying us with the
button bits needed to excavate the
underground parking facility. They are
also taking care of sharpening the bits,”
says Pentti Nieminen, site manager
from Lemminkäinen.
“The button bits that are being used
in the Kivisydän project are new and
made using the latest technology. They
are the result of long-term development work and are at their best when
used with the ‘new generation’ of efficient drilling tools. Lemminkäinen is
using such drilling tools in the Kivisydän
project,” explains Timo Rajala, Robit’s
Finnish Sales and Marketing Director.
Excavation in the Kivisydän tunnel
began last autumn and is expected to
last until the end of 2014.
Demanding conditions
require an expert partner
Construction and excavation in the
downtown core sets special demands
on the work and planning.
“This is a challenging underground
site. We need expert partners whose
work we can trust explicitly. In demanding conditions, knowledgeable people
and state-of-the-art equipment are
crucial for success.
“We are happy with the particularly
high quality of Robit’s button bits and
with their services. The cooperation
between us has been seamless,” says
Nieminen.
Robit’s trump card is, in addition
to high-quality products, the smooth
integration of a bit-sharpening service
with deliveries.
“Thanks to the service, our cooperation partners don’t have to worry about
servicing the bits. This allows them to
focus completely on their core competence,” says Rajala.
Top performance, high-quality
extra services
Robit has been a significant manufacturer and supplier of button bits in Finland since 1985.
“We added the sharpening to our
service concept in 2005. Since then,
we have supplied button bits with the
sharpening service largely to tunnel
excavation sites in the Helsinki area.
This year we will expand our product
range to include drill rods, and our goal
is also to deliver drills rods in various
sizes and strengths for future excavation projects,” says Rajala.
Kivisydän, currently being excavated at a
depth of 30 metres beneath Oulu’s city centre, will be a world-class parking facility that
makes use of modern technology.
Kivisydän, due for completion in 2015, represents the absolute best in parking garages
in terms of functionality, safety and appeal.
Its design solution will broaden Oulu’s commercial core and kick-start the aboveground
development of the city centre.

Congratulations to Production Employee
of the Year Minna Turpeinen!
Production Employee of the Year Minna Turpeinen has reinforced
Robit’s production team for several years now. Her tasks these days
include shift supervisor.
Minna joined Robit in 2005.
“I started as a metal worker in 1994, making, for example,
springs. Currently I spend a large part of my working day at
Robit by the furnace, inserting buttons and carrying out the
related measurements.
During her time as shift supervisor, Minna makes sure that
the required products are made on time, and she is responsible for the work order. In addition, she is the industrial safety
delegate for the employees.
“Our shift supervisors are also responsible for receiving goods
and for the work arrangements of their shifts. Their efforts have
a considerable influence on our delivery reliability and on work
efficiency,” says Production Director Jorma Pyykkö.
Diligent and productive
Minna was chosen as the production employee of the year
particularly for her strong sense of responsibility and diligence. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty, so to speak,
nor is she put off by Robit’s at-times hectic work pace.
“Minna always takes matters forward with determination. She is a highly responsible and productive worker, and
a great colleague,” says Pyykkö.
12 Robit Rocktools Bulletin 1 /2013
“The best thing about my job is definitely my nice and
hard-working colleagues! I like being able to work independently. The changing workdays are also a big bonus. The
most challenging aspect of my job is figuring out how to
squeeze all the things I plan to get done into my 8-hour
shift!” says Minna with a laugh.
“In spring and autumn I spend my free time berry- and
mushroom-picking. Fishing is also fun, although nowadays
I don’t have much time for it. I do handicrafts whenever I
can find the time.”
Skilled and motivated personnel are the key to success
Every year, Robit chooses a production and office worker who
deserves special recognition from amongst its employees.
“We want to give our employees recognition and call attention to their work contribution. The Employee of the Year title
is one way of thanking them,” says CEO Jussi Rautiainen.
“Both our production and office unit do great work, and
they do their part to ensure that Robit enjoys continued
success,” concludes Rautiainen.
NEW FACES
Antti Mäkinen
Sales Engineer Antti Mäkinen joined Robit Rocktools in
autumn 2012.
“My tasks include selling our products, maintaining contact
with customers and providing them with technical support on
their request. I’m in charge of Eastern Europe, the Middle East,
India and Norway.
Antti’s typical work day involves interacting with customers.
“I travel on average 100 days a year, meeting with customers
and visiting trade exhibitions. While in the office, I interact with
customers by email and over the phone.
“The best part of my job is meeting new people around the
world and learning about their cultures. I enjoy working on
Robit’s easy-going team.”
Antti is a team player outside of work, too: he plays ice
hockey as a hobby.
Joonas Sokka
Joonas Sokka completed his Master’s thesis and was
promoted quality and development engineer.
Binn Lim
Regional Manager Binn Lim is in charge of sales and marketing for the Asian market.
Binn joined Robit Rocktools in 2012 and specialised in electrical engineering at Seoul National University of Science and
Technology.
“I have more than 15 years of experience working in sales.
My typical work day consists of introducing Robit’s products
to new customers, providing support to our existing customers and getting feedback from them,” Binn explains.
“Robit’s products are of high quality and deserve recognition. The most interesting and challenging part of my work is
raising Robit’s brand presence through aggressive marketing
and sales activities. I try to act like a ‘walking billboard’ in my
daily work.”
As a counterbalance to his hectic job, Binn has a relaxing
pastime:
“I keep tropical fish in a reef tank. In my spare time, I enjoy
looking at my colourful fish, and it makes me feel as though
I’m at a wonderful tropical beach!”
Joonas Sokka, who holds an M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering, was appointed Robit’s quality and development engineer in October 2012. He first came to Robit in November 2011,
when he started working on his thesis at the company.
“My thesis concerned the Korean plant, and after completing it I worked in Korea for four months. Now I’m based
in Lempäälä.”
Joonas is a member of the product development team. His
responsibilities include maintaining and developing the quality management system and handling customer complaints.
“My work tasks vary a lot, but normally my work day consists
of handling and investigating complaints, developing the
quality management system and maintaining the M-Files
information system.
“What I like best about my work is that it offers a lot of variety and gives me the chance to learn something new every day.
On the other hand, these are also the most challenging aspects
of my work. It’s also nice to see that I can put to good use what
I’ve learned at the university in my work.
After a varied day at work, Joonas still finds time for many
other activities.
“My hobbies include listening to music, watching films, reading books and doing all kinds of sports, like skiing and working
out at the gym.”

“We also had a sample of our Airhorn, which drew a lot of
attention when we demonstrated it to the visitors. You could
say it fulfilled its purpose of being noisy and highly noticeable!”
Robit’s stand drew visitors from all around the world, from
potential distributors to end users interested in trying the
products, as well as some of the existing distributors, such as
CVC (Chile), Rocktech (USA), and GDS (Sweden).
During the fair, Robit arranged a dinner at a typical Chinese
restaurant, where they hosted more than 40 guests.
“Bauma China was an absolute success for Robit. This
show has now become as important as the three other shows
we have always considered major for Robit – Bauma Munich,
Intermat Paris and Conexpo Las Vegas,” Delorme sums up.
