In Our
Communities
At Servco, we recognize that the vibrancy of a community depends, in part, on the investment
of business to serve the community. We believe that as a business grows, it should make a
positive impact on the community in terms of its physical presence, the service it provides,
and the jobs it creates.
Toyota Camry
That’s the spirit behind our new auto complex in Mapunapuna.
The new Servco Auto Honolulu represents an $9 million investment being built on the
existing Toyota City site at 2850 Pukoloa Street. When completed, the expansion will
include a new 41,000-square-foot sales showroom to complement its existing service and
Suzuki Grand Vitara
parts operation. The new showroom is scheduled to be completed this summer. The new
dealership will incorporate open-air display areas, a pitched roof design and a color scheme
that will be reflective of a warm Hawaiian sense of place. The new complex will be an asset
to the Moanalua area, fitting aesthetically into the community. And it will be a source of
employment for Hawaii's residents for many years to come.
It’s one way Servco honors its commitment to making Hawaii a better place to live and work.

his year’s First Hawaiian
International
Auto
Show
experienced a 2.4% increase in attendance, narrowly
avoiding the 42 straight days of
rain that fell the islands and which
ended just one week prior to the
show.
Some 18 of 20 Motor Trend
shows experienced downticks in
attendance –largely because of
weather-related issues. East Coast
auto shows were pounded by snow
storms in October.
HADA thanks First Hawaiian
Bank for providing a new, fresh
show logo and again supporting
dealers with title sponsorship of
the auto show and an outstanding
display at the show’s entrance. Auto
show discount tickets, provided
through the bank’s locations and
mailings, were extensively used by
show-goers.
The Honolulu Advertiser,
celebrating its 150th year of
publishing, provided what Motor
Trend officials described as
outstanding print advertising
support and sponsorship of the
Show and the VIP Preview
Night. Show producer Steve
Freeman, said Motor Trend’s ad
production staff was “ecstatic” to
be able to create full-color ads
for the Honolulu newspaper.
Other Motor Trend shows around
the country only receive black
and white print support from
the newspaper sponsors. The
Advertiser’s exhibit in the center
of the show floor displayed a
model of the newspaper’s new $84
million color press.
HADA’s special thanks goes
to all the 36 automakers (with
participation by local dealerships)
who provided four football fields
of displays, expert show floor
staffing, and more than 250 new
and pre-production models for
this year’s exciting show floor.
A special mahalo goes to Ala
Moana Center for the tie-in
discount ticket promotion this
year and to JN Automotive Group,
and Joe Nicolai for providing the
$1 million exotic car display, to
AAA Hawaii and McDonald’s
for providing sponsorships, and
to vintage cars displayers which
included the Hawaii Corvette
Association, Hawaiian Island
Cameros, Porsche Club of
America – Hawaii Region, and
EFI Unlimited.
Here’s to a great show next
year! Show dates are set for March
22 to 25, 2007.

2006 Legislative Session Ends With Good, Bad,
and Ugly Bills
NEGATIVE EQUITY LANGUAGE
CLARIFIED
A HADA-initiated bill that added
clarifying language to Hawaii’s Credit
Sale Act passed this session. Sen.
Ron Menor, sponsored the measure
(SB2224). The governor has already
signed the measure into law. Ford
Motor Credit requested that Hawaii
update its language. Now, thanks to
the help of Menor, the Senate Commerce, Consumer Protection and
Housing chair, and Representative
Robert Herkes, the House Consumer
Protection chair, Hawaii’s statutes
mirror the updated language found in
38 other states’ statutes.
PARKING TICKET BILL NOW
SIGNED INTO LAW.
HADA’s parking ticket bill now goes
into effect. Governor Lingle signed
SB2065 into law (now ACT 103)
Wednesday, May 17th at 2 p.m. The
new law has provisions to allow registrations that are currently prevented
from transfer because of a judiciary
stopper for unpaid parking tickets, to
now have those stoppers lifted.
PARKING TICKET BILL HAD SOME
LAST-MINUTE DRAMA
The HADA-initiated bill to eliminate
the vexing problem of dealers paying
unpaid parking tickets on trade-ins
encountered some last-minute drama.
SB2065 had moved smoothly until
state judiciary officials, on the last day
for hearings, proposed a conference
draft. It amazingly would have forced
dealers to pay off any unpaid moving
violations in addition to traffic tickets
before a stopper could be removed
on trade-in vehicles. Even though
verbal testimony is not allowed in
conference committee, HADA ver-
bally objected. It turned out that the
judiciary’s draft, however, had already
been rejected. The HADA language
had not yet been reinserted in the
draft.
DEALER DAY AT THE CAPITOL
HAD A POSITIVE EFFECT
Citing input received from dealers
on Dealer Day, Sen. Lorraine Inouye
said she thought that the traffic ticket
stoppers were indeed a vexing problem for dealers and she noted that
she had earlier rejected the judiciary’s
amendment and had instructed that
HADA’s original language be reinserted. Sen. Will Espero sponsored
the bill.
THE CORE CURRICULUM BILL WAS
GUTTED, THEN PASSED
Bowing to pressure from the teachers’ union, Sen. Norman Sakamoto
gutted the statewide core curriculum
bill which had advanced with much
HADA support. SB3059 becomes
a weakened version that now funds
demonstration projects for the concept.
The daily newspaper editorial writers, Perry and Price and parents had
been strong supporters of the HADA
efforts. The story received national
attention through a number of web
news outlets.
AN UGLY AMENDMENT TO THE
PAYROLL TAX BILL MAY GENERATE THE NEED FOR A GOVERNOR’S
VETO
A bill that reduces the amount that
businesses have to pay into the
unemployment insurance fund for
two years was amended to include
provisions allowing payment of
unemployment benefits upon dismissal for cause – unless the cause is
the employee’s “willful and wanton”
disregard for the employer’s interests.
This legal bar, however, is considered
so high, that virtually all dismissed
employees will qualify for unemployment benefits.
HADA wrote Speaker Calvin Say:
“The addition of the ‘willful and
wanton’ language to SB2190 forces
acceptance of all egregious misconduct which doesn’t rise to the high
bar of this legal test.” HADA will
likely join other business organizations in requesting a governor’s veto.
The Honolulu Advertiser reported:
“The bill’s close vote in the House
— 28 to 21 — suggests that a Lingle
veto would not be overridden.“
This bill, which started out as a measure to refund some of the excess millions of dollars in the unemployment
fund back to the businesses that paid
the money in, now with the “willful
and wanton” amendment, has became
truly ugly.

In Memory of
Ken Stanford
August 8, 1942 - May 19, 2006
K
en Stanford passed away
on Friday, May 19, 2006,
at Straub Clinic and Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii at age 63
after a short battle with lung cancer.
Ken was the Vice President and
General Manager of JN Automotive
in Honolulu for 16 years and active
in the automobile business prior to
that in Washington and Oregon.
Born in Spokane, Washington, Ken
moved around the United States
as a son of a Navy Submariner. His
first job as a youngster was peddling
newspapers on the street corners of
Key West, Florida, beginning his
passion for sales and promotion. He
attended high school at the
Norwich Free Academy in Norwich,
Connecticut and attended Gonzaga
University in Spokane, Washington. Ken sold newspapers, worked
construction, was a short order cook
at the old Reef Hotel in Waikiki,
and had many other jobs over the
years. He was an entrepreneur, lover
of great wines, friends and life.
A lifetime love affair with cars and
a deep patriotic appreciation for the
military, especially for the enlisted
men and women, defined his life
outside his family. Ken was always in
the front line of support, financial or
otherwise, for the men and women
in uniform. During Ken’s tenure at
JN Automotive, he and founder Joe
Nicolai were vanguards of support
for the morale and welfare of the
troops in Hawaii.
22
He made lifetime friends of the
men and women of the Reservists, National Guard, US Army, US
Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast
Guard as well as Flag officers from
all branches. He kept in touch and
they became part of his extended
family no matter where they served
in the world.
His generosity was widespread and
you could find Joe Nicolai and Ken
behind hundreds of community
activities ranging from the support of the Arts to sponsorship of
hydroplane races and the Narcissus
Ball. He was a man involved and
committed to the community and
believed in giving back to the people
of Hawaii.
Ken met Julie Hassel, his wife, in
1981 in Portland, Oregon, and in
typical Ken style he pursued her
with great determination. They married in 1984 and lived in Seattle. In
1986, their son Tony was born, and
in 1988, their daughter Morgan was
born.
Julie owns and operates the Morgan
Beret retail store at Kahala Mall.
Tony is a student at Chaminade
University and Morgan is a senior
at St. Andrews Priory in Honolulu.
According to Morgan, “The job Ken
performed best was being a dad. Not
just to his children but to anyone
who came in contact with him.
There are countless individuals who
will miss Ken’s support, love and
guidance.”
