Warn Pilots
The ongoing problems of delays on the majority of Vueling flights put the airline at risk of collapse according to
a statement issued by the airline pilots union SEPLA.
The warning comes following numerous complaints by
travellers facing delays of many hours. The Diario de
Ibiza reported, by example, a student from Santa Eulalia
studying in Barcelona who had a flight scheduled for
7.45pm, but his plane did not take off until 7.45am the
following day. Joan Roig said “the situation was chaotic
and the staff at the Vueling desk in El Prat seemed to
have less information than the passengers.” Adding that
assurances of alternate flights were given every two
hours he continued “over the course of the delay, I was
sent to 10 different departure gates, and they even tried

Those who are considered to be the best amateur theatre companies will be showcasing their works in the
new Cultural Centre, which will begin this Saturday

that are behind the monument.
The Ibicenco poet Isidoro Macabich i Llobet was born on
September 10th, 1883 and died in 1973, the son of a
wealthy family, was a great historian and poet, lover of
local customs and researcher, he left us a body of work,
such as his monumental History of Ibiza, “Es
Feudalisme a Eivissa” (Feudalism in Ibiza), "Santa
María la Mayor. Los Cronistas" (Saint Mary the Great.
The Chroniclers). He alternated his life between church
and culture.

Today, as we were soon to find out, would be all about the
taste of summer. Ironic then that we had picked the first
overcast day for a week or more for our visit. The consequence is the absence of photography setting the beauty of
the food against the blue sky splendour of the marina over
which the fabulous Villa Mercedes restaurant looks. But in
hindsight perhaps that was not such a bad thing—today was
to be all about the food, no need for distractions however
beautiful they may be.

Sorbet white wine
Next to arrive at the table was a new addition to the wine list
for 2016. This 2015 Catalan Garnatxa from Casa Berger, is
made to be served very cold, almost frozen. A soft aromatic
and refreshing wine that lost none of its flavour by its chill.

of any dish, and today’s meal
makes that a truly hard job, I
would have liked some lemon wedges to squeeze over to my
own, very lemony taste.
We were warned of many good things still to come but it did
not stop us wanting to fill ourselves on the comforting caress
of the perfectly cooked rice.
Salmon Ceviche.
Another lovingly prepared delight that shouts summer in its
vibrant lime cup. The Salmon with red onion, lime juice
topped with sesame seeds and chilli sticks strikes a perfect
balance as the smooth and smoky fish tumbles over your
taste buds alongside the zing of lime, pop of sesame and mild
but unmistakeable chilli hit.
Homemade Flatbread
Termed crusted toast on the
menu, this artisan bread had
a snap that makes fingers
the order of the day. Topped
with avocado, prawns, confit
tomato, lime jelly and a
mango cream, it epitomised
everything summer, and
again those tumbling flavours lifted the dish
to a height that belied its humble pan base. The addition of
some cracked black pepper made it better still.
Iberian Pork Tenderloin.
Wow. “Get your coat pork, you’ve pulled”. Such a refined
meal probably doesn’t warrant such a cheap pun, forgive me,
I couldn’t resist. But cheap as the pun is this plate served the
sentiment and some. Deliciously moist, so moist, true melt in
the mouth with the added kick of chilli flakes should you
choose to take them. Another fantastic taste combination in
the rosemary mash, to my mind more a puree, working perfectly with the salt of the finest pork I have eaten. We have
come to know that Villa Mercedes never fail to provide the
finest produce and this dish provided the perfect example of
that quality first policy.
Galician (Galego) Entrecote
Calamari Roll
On one side of the table, mine, this was the starter to get the
gold star of merit. The calamari was so flavoursome and the
stuffing of rich wild mushrooms and garlic is inspired. I loved
the edamame in both cream and whole form (think posh
mushy peas and the snappiest garden peas you’ve ever tasted) with the teriyaki giving added zing.
Mozzarella salad with Watermelon.
And following my side of the table’s accolade for the Calamari, my opposite number found the same plated joie de vivre in
the salad of mozzarella and watermelon (pictured centre
top) served with red onion and bursting balsamic vinaigrette
caviar. Everything was still very much in summer mode and
somehow that winter favourite cinnamon had been infused
into the water melon to give a summer taste. Kitchen witchcraft.
Rice with Cuttlefish and Prawns.
No Spanish Sunday could be complete without a rice dish and
this paella, as most of us would know it, was a real aficiona-
The only thing more amazing than there being another dish
coming to us, was that it managed to compete with the Pork
in taking our breath away.
The Galego entrecote was again of the very highest standard,
cooked to rare perfection, that being perfectly rare. However
it was the accompaniments that took it to ’Masterchef’ standards. Served with baby carrots, pickled red onion and green
mojo sauce, it took it from a steak plate to something so
much more special. The pickled vegetables work wonderfully
with the steak, a clash of flavour that demands affection.
Add the green mojo sauce which consists of avocado, green
peppers and coriander and the whole dish comes alive. Truly
superb.
Dessert Banquet
The dessert selection presented, banquet is really the only
fitting term, certainly made us wish we had taken some
greater heed of the paella warning. The sumptuous delights
are really deserving of a review of their own however space
restricts us to an unjustifiably brief mention. Please look to

The situation has led to the pilots considering industrial
action due of what they describe as ‘a cascade of breaches of collective working agreements’ signed by both parties.
Union head Jose Maria Font said that although the company is healthy, the situation was and still is so bad that
98% of pilots voted to support industrial action including
strike action.
Last year Vueling transported 24.7million passengers
amassing over 95m€ of profit, triple the amount expected. However the SEPLA spokesperson said that the
fundamental problem is that Vueling has neither sufficient crews nor aircraft required to meet its “ambitious
schedule” for which they have already sold a large proportion of seats.
Compounding the situation a French air traffic controllers strike on Tuesday caused the cancellation of 4 flights
to Ibiza.
Napoli Watch Gangs At Work
Again
Four arrested for stealing watch valued at 19,000€
All arrested are said to be young men from Naples in
Italy and belonging to an organised criminal gang.
The national police have issued a statement confirming
the arrest of four Italian nationals on June 24th. They
stand accused of the theft of a luxury watch valued at
19,000€. The police say that the gang specialise in the
theft of such watches, taking advantage of Ibiza’s tourist
influx in the summer months. They are said to arrive in
groups of four people who will only stay a week or two
before being replaced by new gang members. Considered
to be a sophisticated criminal operation, the individuals
are given false identity documents and have travel, ac-

Statement by HMA Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, on the outcome of the referendum
Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, today issued a statement to the English-language media in Spain
which serves British nationals living in the country.
He said:
“I am very aware from the questions that we have been
getting that some Britons living in Spain are uncertain
about what the Referendum result means for them.
“As the Prime Minister has said, there is no immediate
change. You still have exactly the same rights. You can
still live and work here, travel back and forth in the same
commodation and car rentals arranged in advance on
their behalf using said false details.
The gangs have been operating for several years focusing on thefts from Ibizan entrepreneurs in the hotel and
tourism sector. In the last three years alone they have
stolen watches valued at over 3m€.
San Jose city hall announced on Tuesday that it will
invest a total of 3.2m€ across 24 projects covering water
supply and distribution, and road works across the municipality. As explained in a press conference the mayor,
Josep Mari Ribas and deputy mayors Paquita Ribas and
Angel Luis Guerrero said that the bulk of the money
(17%) will be allocated to water supply works. This will
mainly be the repair and replacement of pipelines to prevent water supply loss which is far worse in San Jose
than in any other municipality.
This further budgetary commitment is in addition to an
investment of 2.5m€ in projects that are already in progress or have already been finalised. The mayor said that
it was necessary “to continue investing so that when the
desalinated water supply is available to the municipality,
it will not have the losses of up to 68% which the district
could not afford to cover.”
Modus operandi
The modus operandi is usually the same. They will first
position themselves in high end restaurants, around the
marina and exclusive boutiques. They then follow potential victims until they find the most opportune moment
for the theft. Many are said to be accomplished pick
pockets and as such some victims may not even notice
their watch has been taken, but whether identified or
not, the perpetrator will then flee on the back of a nearby
motorbike ridden by an accomplice. They then have a car
waiting close by to which the watch is transferred.
The national police say that they are working with the
cooperation and support of Italian police agents specialising in theft by these gangs.
Talamanca Sewage Pipeline
Replacement
Abaqua, the Balearic water agency have announced the
emergency works (SIC) to replace the sewage outlet pipe
at Talamanca will start within 30 days, as reported by
the environmental department of the Balearic government.
Though terming the project ‘emergency works’ the problem of the Talamanca pipeline has been an issue over
several seasons and on numerous occasions caused the
closure of the Talamanca beach due to ruptures in the
pipeline and raw sewage being evident close to, and
sometimes even on, the shoreline.

Sant Josep Gridlock
Residents and business owners in the village of San
Jose have repeated their concerns at the ever worsening traffic situation. Though still not yet in the peak
season, long queues on the roads leading up to the
village are a daily occurrence with tailbacks of several
hundred metres, as can be seen in the image by Vicent
Mari of traffic approaching from the east into town.
The queues are caused by a combination of traffic
calming measure, and the road being used as the main
access artery to the many popular beaches and coves
on the South West coast.
Sant Josep needs the traffic calming measures as the
main road runs through the middle of the village and
has been the scene of many accidents in the past.

in Ibiza after taking lethal cocktail of drink,
drugs and sleeping tablets

A British bar worker found lying face down in bed following a drink and drug fuelled night out in Ibiza, died of
drugs toxicity, a coroner ruled. Alexander Moynes,
known to friends in Ibiza and Britain as Zander, spent
the night partying before returning to his hotel apartment home at around 7am.
His roommate discovered him lying flat out on his bed

contestant Elle Stevenson sat through the inquest as
details of her friend's death were read out by Berkshire
coroner Peter Bedford. Following his death she sent out
a series of tributes to her friend including pictures of
them when they were little, with one alongside the message "I had the time of my life fighting dragons with
you."
Mr Moynes had been living in the notorious club resort of
San Antonia for just three weeks in 2015 before going
on a night out with friends where it was thought he had
visited a friend's apartment and taken beta blockers.
Cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, codeine and alcohol were all
found in the system of the young man, who died from
drugs toxicity after the night long binge.
Shane Holden, who had been sleeping on the sofa in the
two bedroom apartment in the Hotel Sun Down on San
Antonio strip with Zander and friends Jasper Burgess
and Craig Piednoir, described how his friend had
"seemed fine" just hours before falling asleep and dying
from the combined effects of stimulant and depressive
drugs.
He said: "My recollection from that night was pretty
good, I wasn't under the influence. Although Jasper and
Zander went out together they didn't return together.
When Zander came back he seemed okay. He was quite
cheerful and was not upset. There was nothing out of the
ordinary. There had been a falling out so Craig had
moved out temporarily. That meant Zander had his own
room, Jasper had his room and I had the sofa. It was
myself who found him. I went into Zander's room because his phone kept ringing so I went to see who it was

been prescribed sleeping tablets in the past and had
struggled with sleeping as a child. It was thought that in
the night before he died Mr Moynes had consumed beta
blockers or sleeping tablets but the coroner confirmed
that it was the combination of drugs and alcohol in his
system that led to his untimely death.
At the time his sister, Jade Balfour and his father, Joe
Moynes, had flown over the the party island in a desperate attempt to find out the truth about how Zander had
died. Bungling police in Ibiza, confusion over translated
accounts from witness and delayed toxicology reports
were referred to during the inquest into the young man's
death on June 12 2015.
Conflicting accounts given about how Zander was found
was noted by the coroner who added: "If I had a complete set of statements saying the same thing I would be
suspicious. Did they push this into the realm of anything
sinister having happened? I think unlikely and the Ibizan
authorities certainly did not. Alexander Moynes died on
July 12, 2015, at the Hotel Sun Down in Ibiza. The
cause of death was drug toxicity and the conclusion I will
make is one of a drug-related death."

For 10 years The Zoo Project at Benimussa Park just
outside San Antonio has been bringing a festival
vibe to the Ibiza club scene with its magical and
innovative outdoor parties. It runs on Saturdays
from 16:00 - midnight and is the one place I've tried
to get to at least once every year since I arrived
five years ago. It always leaves me smiling and appreciative of all things 'Ibiza'.It's a beautiful, concentrated, mini representation of this island I call
home, where tourists and locals of all ages, nationalities, backgrounds, beliefs (and levels of sobriety!) mingle happily under the sun, trees and stars.
It's diverse and creative in what it offers, with
something to suit pretty much everyone. In the
Mandala Gardens you'll find all things relaxed and
spiritual, and you can choose to participate or to sit
back and watch with a cocktail in your hand. There's
a vast variety of wonders on offer in the Mandala
Gardens: massage, tarot, body painting, yoga, medi-
tation, Indian dance, capoiera,
acrobatics, mesmerising dance
and balancing feats with balls
and hoops, drumming, live world
music and, new for this year, the
Nature Project stand. The Nature
Project is a charitable project aiming to conserve nature and give
back to the environment and I enjoyed a long chat with Jessica, one of
the lovely representatives resplendent in
feathers and face paint, while I was there.
She told me how they aim to acquire land for nature conservation and the rehabilitation of animals to be set free into the wild in the
Amazon rainforest. They also organise environmental work here in Ibiza, such as beach clean ups and
the protection of posidonia (a
rare sea plant vital to the ecosystem here, but being destroyed by boat anchors). I
passed on my details to Jessica to be included in helping
with the next project here, so
will be sure to keep our readers informed.In total contrast
to Mandala Gardens is the Seal
Pit, a sweaty, pulsating mass of
people dancing around a fenced off
pool as DJs play, incredible, athletic
dancers entertain in their feathers, paint and
faux fur and 'animals' drop in to join the fun. The
vibe here is infectious and the dancers and DJ's
drive everyone into a euphoric frenzy.As well as
this, there are two other stages to be entertained
at. The Pool where you can swim, splash and relax
as more chilled music drifts from the DJ booth, The
Treehouse, an elevated stage which looks like,

you've guessed it, a treehouse, where you can expect more uptempo tunes and a whole host of
'street' entertainment, from tightrope walkers, limbo dancers, stilt walkers, acrobats, people in full
animal suits and a Victorian explorer riding an
'ostrich'. There's also a BBQ area, several weird and
wonderful seating areas, from picnic benches, to
bucking Broncos, to a giant wooden bench, little
toadstools and pallet furniture and there's even a
VIP area fended off behind the seal pit. You're never far from a refreshment either with bars all over
the place, and the prices are really reasonable. This
year's 'theme' is Down The Rabbit Hole and the party certainly fits the bill. Every
area brings a surprise

The Book of Psalms is probably the most widely read
and loved book in the Bible. It consists of a collection of
150 ancient Near Eastern poetic prayers used for worship in both the 1st and 2nd temples in Jerusalem. The
1st temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 BC.
The Psalms are in classical Hebrew script but of course
translated in our English Bibles. The Hebrew name of
the collection is tehilim. The oldest manuscripts for several of these Psalms, as well as some others not in the
Bible, have been discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
The manuscripts of the Dead Sea Scrolls are one thousand years older than the manuscripts of the Biblical
text! Of the 150 Psalms in the Bible, 127 are preserved
in the Psalm Scroll. An interesting example is Psalm
145. In the Biblical text of this Psalm a verse is missing!
The missing verse is between verses 13 & 14. We know
this because it is an acrostic Psalm. The verse is not
missing in the text of the Dead Sea Scrolls!
In the aftermath of the referendum it may seem unlikely
that anything from these ancient Near Eastern poetic
prayers could offer any wisdom or insight. How can we
pray into this situation? One verse from Psalm 16 says:
“The Lord is my chosen portion” (Verse 5). The Hebrew word translated as “portion” is pronounced chelek
and carries the meanings: “share”, “portion”,
“allotment”, “plot of land”, “lot”, “inheritance”. We
might conclude from this that our deep security is not in
Great Britain or in the European Union!! The Psalm
also gives guidance about how this deep security in God
is found. The Psalm says: “I bless the Lord who gives
me counsel in the night also my heart instructs me. I

A Little Village With A
Big Heart.
The people of Cala Llonga recently held “Two gatherings" to raise money to help a very popular village resident who is suffering with an illness that cannot be treated on the island, therefore she has to travel to Germany
for private alternative treatment which is quite costly.
Once again the residents, friends and businesses in the
village have pulled together and kindly donated some
magnificent items for auction and raffle, including 2 tickets for a Manchester United home game at Old Trafford,
with dinner before your chosen game, boat trips, restaurant meals and much more. The total amount raised was
4500€, with donations still coming in. Below is a response from the lady concerned.
"I would like to thank all my Neighbours and Friends of
our special village Cala Llonga for all they have done in
organizing a fund raising event for me. Unfortunately, I
did not have enough energy to come down to the auction
to thank you all.
I am so proud of you of all you have achieved. You did a
brilliant job and I cannot thank you enough for it. If the
results from the clinic in Germany turn out positive at
the end of July – that’s were the money is going. So keep

Dear readers and dog lovers,
the issue today is about the sensitivity of our dogs towards
us humans.
I recently had a very moving encounter that encouraged me
to share this with you. I was consulted by a couple who recently had adopted a dog from a dog compound, where it
was supposed to be put to sleep. The couple already owned 2
dogs, who also came from dog compounds a few years before.
The beautiful now approximately 8-month-old puppy was
found in dramatic circumstances on the street and was closer
to death than to life. The couple nursed him with the help of
a veterinarian and the dog has fully recovered from his tragic
past.
But there was a big problem from the first day of the adoption.
The dog constantly kept a distance from the female owner ...
even worse, he would not let her touch him and felt threatened when she approached him. He gave her clear signs and
warnings.
For his new owner an intolerable situation, because she only
wanted to do good and tried everything to win his friendship/
trust. Her husband had no problems, instead he was allowed
to do anything with the dog, and the dog seemed to fully
trust his new owner.
The couple contacted me because the situation seemed
hopeless and they needed help desperately. For the couple,
there was only one plausible explanation for the behaviour of
their new dog:
a woman must have done serious harm to him !!!
As always, I begin my consultation in the home of the dog, so
I can watch the everyday situation of the dog and its owner
and ascertain what causes the problem. Only after many
questions and observations I can get a picture why and where
the problem is rooted.
This case seemed very complicated, but in the end I came to
the conclusion:
The dog constantly receives and senses an enormous negative energy from his female owner ...
and I had to find out why ???
It became apparent that the woman is terminally ill ... the
couple never even considered,
that their dogs behaviour could be linked to her illness.
I explained to her why her dog reacted in this way, which is
very difficult, having to put this sensitive subject to the owner.
For many dogs a disease is regarded as extreme weakness,
which is a protective instinct that we humans must respect.
There is a psychological answer to this instinctive reaction,
which can mitigate this instinct and the fear and ultimately
cures the problem. Again it is a very delicate subject and has
to be handled very carefully.
Dear readers, I would like to explain with the help of this
case, to what extent our dogs are able to sense and react to
us and how much we humans are underestimating this sensitivity of our dogs in general.
Conclusion - how many times are our dogs overloaded
with extreme emotions by us ...are left with them and
develop a trauma, which is constantly growing, if it is not
detected and healed.
In this case, I have worked out
a program in which the dog
will learn how to trust his
owner, and therefore will lose
its fear of her illness.
At any time and at any age
of a dog, a rehabilitation and
healing can be successfully
carried out.

What Should I Do In
Case Of A Car Accident?
Liberty Seguros have issued an advisory article on the
procedures to be followed if you are unfortunate enough
to be involved in a car accident in Spain. Worthy of your
time even if you have been resident on the Island for
some time – regulations have changed over the years,
particularly with regard to the emergency kit drivers are
required to carry at all times.
The RAC details the current requirements to carry in your
accident and emergency kit as below. They warn of heavy
on the spot fines for failing to follow the rules.
Reflective jackets (Although not mandatory to carry,
someone walking on the road or hard shoulder can be
fined if not wearing one)
Warning triangle (compulsory in every vehicle with 4
wheels or more) (Residents must carry 2)
Headlamp beam deflectors (Depending on your car,
you will either need deflector stickers or have to adjust
the beam manually)
Motorcyclists: Crash helmets are compulsory for riders
of mopeds, motorcycles, trikes and quads, unless these
are equipped with seat belts. Motorcycles on the road
must have their lights on at all times.
*Lights (It is no longer compulsory for vehicles to carry
a set of spare bulbs and the tools to fit them)
For the benefit of drivers on holiday or new to the island,
it is worth explaining the accident report Liberty refers
to. This is a mandatory requirement of any accident with
another vehicle in Spain. Your insurance documentation
should include blank copies of the carbon form which
must be completed and signed by both drivers at the
scene. Hire cars will also be provided with blank copies of
the form.

Now, more than other times during the year, one needs
to be even more careful than ever on the roads. With all
these extra cars and drivers, who are perhaps more used
to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable.
Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by
checking them at least once a month. Also check your
car’s radiator level is topped up; the last thing you want is
to overheat and have to wait for a breakdown truck on
the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of
screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back is not permitted
either. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round,
and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile
phones are a definite no no, INCLUDING texting, which is
probably worse than speaking.
Should the unthinkable happen, here are some tips that
everyone, from a new driver to an experienced one,
should remember in the case of an accident:
Stay calm and wear the reflective vest in your emergency kit.
Get to a safe area near the accident scene, turn on your
hazard lights and use the two triangles in your emergency kit.
Make sure everyone is okay and call the emergency
services on 112 if necessary.
When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved,
damage, road signs, etc.
Get statements and contact information from any witnesses
Complete the accident report: write down the other
driver's licence number, insurance details, vehicle information and phone number. Remember it has to be
signed by both drivers and reported within seven days.

I’m back in London and out of the Balearic
blur that was my birthday bash last weekend.
It was all about Nikki Beach Mallorca. A
luxurious location with an epic bar bill. If
you are ever in the continually improving Magaluf, I thoroughly recommend the place. However, a daily visit during
your holiday is unlikely, since you’ll need to pay €175 for a
poolside bed before you even think about eating, swimming
or using the loo.
It was good to get away from the disastrous Brexit result.
Whilst I absorbed the
horror of the referendum, Nikki Beach

Weathering the Storm.
The sky is dark, the air suddenly heavy . A freak gust
surprises me with its ferocity. Nearby a branch cracks
loudly and there's a deep sense of foreboding.
I could panic, far from home and ill-equipped to cope
with nature's sudden unexpected fury.
Can I outrun this, I wonder, race over the barren
mountain top as thunder might crack around me and
lightning punch at the earth with such force as to
knock me from my feet and deafen my senses.
Perhaps shelter is the wiser action, but where? Where
might the lightning not strike, where might the earth
not flood and mud stampede, taking all before it and
moving boulders as effortlessly as a child kicks at a
stone.

now in the so-called weaker half of the draw with really only

with a stunning performance against Hungary, qualifiers from
Group F, with a knock-out 4-0 win, becoming the first side to
score 4. Superbly led by Eden Hazard, another of my Star
Players, Belgium must go in to the Quarter Final as favourites
but Wales are no push-overs and with Bale, Ramsey and Williams on song, could easily cause an upset.
As for the big boys who all seem to be in the stronger half of
the draw, well, Spain, holders of the title for the last 8 years,
qualified in 2nd from Group D and faced Italy, winners of
Group E, and having just watched the whole match, there
must be some very disappointed Spaniards in Ibiza, let alone
in the country at the moment, as Italy, tactically superior,
won through 2-0 to seal a place in the last 8. Slightly flattering scoreline really, as although Italy started well and scored
from a set-piece, the second half really belonged to Spain as
a superb defensive display and great keeping from Buffon
kept them at bay. Mind you, both Morata and Pique should
have scored to bring the sides level and force extra-time but
wasn't to be as Italy broke away in the last few minutes to
score a killer goal. So, Italy move on to another big-boy meeting in the last 8, this time against joint-favourites Germany,
winners of Group C, who easily dispatched Group B 3rd
placed Slovakia (remember them, the side that England
lead to England challenging for the no 1 spot against the All
Blacks in a year or so altho' we don't actually play them until
2018!
So for all the England fans who were in Australia for the series they can echo the famous words of Max Boyce and cry "I
was there!"
Elsewhere, gallant Ireland pushed South Africa all the way.
The series being poised at 1-1, they headed to Port Elizabeth
aiming for a famous series win, however this was not to be.
They went down to a narrow defeat 19-13. Overall in the
three match series SA 71 and Ireland 65 shows how close
they came and the Irish can come home with their heads held
high.
Not so the Welsh, who have been playing the All Blacks. New
Zealand are on a run of 28 consecutive wins, the last 2
against Wales in this series. Could Warren Gatland inspire
some Welsh Dragon fire for the final game to take some
pride back to the Welsh Valleys? He made twelve changes but
after Dan Biggar had put Wales 6-3 ahead these were the last
points scored and Wales were forced to return home with
their tails between their legs after a very one sided 46-6 defeat.

Heartbreak for Northern Ireland as McAuley puts the ball into his
own net , and with it Wales into the quarter finals

Portugal on Thursday, 9 pm in Marseille, as Portugal, 3rd
placed in Group F after a stunning 3-3 draw with Hungary
where Ronaldo at last came alive with 2 goals (as we all knew
he would!) and then a nail-biting 1-0 win over winners of
Group D Croatia in the last 16. Again it was that man Ronaldo
who set up the winning goal in extra-time after a 0-0 draw at
full-time.
So, there you have it, all set up nicely for the Quarters with
Poland/Portugal on Thursday, Wales/Belgium on Friday, Germany/Italy on Saturday and France/Iceland on Sunday. Funny
how the French, as hosts, seem to get the longest breaks
between matches!
Jezza's Predictions: Oooer, crunch time but as 'tis expected,
I'm going for these Semi- Finals:
Portugal v. Belgium. Germany (although I'd love to see Italy
there!) v. France
And the Final? Belgium v. Germany with my dark horses, the
Belgians winning through with a bit of magic from de Bruyne
and Hazard.

Wow! Not since 1971 have the Aussies suffered a whitewash
at home, at that time it was South Africa. No northern hemisphere side has ever won a test series in Australia.
England had sealed the series win after triumphs in Brisbane
and Melbourne, so would they go for the jugular in front of a
record crowd in Sydney with a 3-0 thumping or change the
team? No Eddie Jones and this England regime play the best
team whenever possible, resulting in a 44-40 England victory.
Make no mistake this is a very good Australia side with a
world class full back in Folau, who helped to mount attack
after attack. However England are emerging with their own
world-class players, notably Owen Farrell for his kicking,
George Ford the play-maker, Chris Robshaw revelling in the
release from captaincy and Dylan Hartley who is leading by
example as the new captain, despite negative views on his
previous diabolical disciplinary record. Our shining star for
the future , 21 year old Saracen lock Maro Itoje has helped
take the England game to the next level.
England may not be the complete team yet but under Eddie
Jones their transformation in the last six months could even

on to the ODIs, where Sri Lanka are supposedly the better

First up Trent Bridge, that wonderfully revamped cricket

skies (Oh for more of those) and were all out for 285. Pick of
the bowling being the leg spinner Adil Rashid, his 10 overs
only costing 36 runs. Not the most challenging of targets for
this regenerated England side led by captain Eoin Morgan ,
but England slipped to 82-6 before Joss Butler scored 93 and
Chris Woakes' unbeaten 95 brought England to need 6 off
the last ball to secure a draw, with Liam Plunkett facing. This
is England, it never happens for England, but it does for the
last 12 months! Plunkett hits a straight six to send the crowd
home delirious.
On to Edgbaston, surely the Anfield of English cricket as the
passion and support from the Holt End is unrivalled at any
cricket ground. All experts were predicting a run-fest. Sri
Lanka won the toss and elected to bat. England's fielding, by
their own admission, has not been to their normal high standards of late, however in this game they restricted Sri Lanka to
254-7 including a brilliant run out by Jason Roy and a superb
diving catch from David Willey and Rashid again proving leg
spin to be invaluable to England, taking 2 wickets for 34 in his
10 overs. In came Alex Hales and Jason Roy who lit up the
grey Edgbaston skies, breaking record after record for an
England opening partnership in ODI and scoring the highest
ever opening partnership with both achieving individual centuries, Roy 112 (95 balls) and Hales after proving himself as a
test opening partner for Alistair Cook is coming to remind me
of the stroke play of Len Hutton and the swash buckling style
of Colin Milburn making 133 off 110 balls (including hitting
Sri Lankan leg spinner Prasanna for 27 in one over). England
completed the victory in 34 overs, in ODI terms - a massacre.
Then off to Bristol, the County Ground, for a day game. England won the toss and put Sri Lanka in to bat, restricting them
to 248-9 after 50 overs. After a rain delayed start England's
reply fizzled out at 16-1 when the rain returned forcing the
game to be abandoned. On this occasion Alex Hales faced
only two balls and was out for a duck - he obviously didn't
want to get his hair wet! (this last comment from my wife
who is a good friend of "'er indoors!", Jezza's far better other
half!).
So, with two games to go and England only one up, still all to
play for!

And now, at last, the real football starts with all the
Big Boys beginning to flex their muscles, biceps etc. So, let's
start with the hosts, France, who having topped Group A,
came up against 3rd in Group E, the Republic of Ireland who
did brilliantly to qualify with a 1-0 win against leaders Italy, a
result that even had Mr Sourpuss hisself', Roy Keane, breaking in to a smile and actually hugging manager Martin O'Neill!
On paper, so the French thought, an easy one but Ireland got
off to a great start with a 2nd minute penalty and looked to
be in the driving seat. However, France aren't joint favourites
for nothing and after a half-time bashing from Mnsr Deschamps, pulled out 2 goals from Atletico Madrid's Griezeman,
one of my predicted Star Players, to win and go through to a
Quarter Final meeting in Saint-Denis with Iceland on Sunday
at 9 pm. On paper, it should have been England but I'm not
going down that road because, having just watched the worst
performance of an England team in my lifetime (and I'm over
60!) in their 2-1 loss to Iceland, despite going 1-0 up after
only 4 minutes, I just wouldn't know where to start with my
criticisms, but at least the Hedgehog has done the right thing
and on the pitch, preparation, systems and ideas. Nuff said
methinks but well summed up by “Out of the EU, not in the
Euro and now not in the Euros!”
Talking of Bale though, hats off to Wales for putting one over
on England and winning the group after their Bale-inspired 30 demolition of Russia (what a complete disappointment they
were!) whilst England, although dominant, were unable to
prise Slovakia's defence apart (oh, for a Hoddle!). So, a last 16
match for Coleman's battlers against surprise Group C 3rd
placed Northern Ireland and wasn't it great to see them both
there but with Wales clear favourites. However, what a typical English League game this turned out to be with lots of
endeavour from both sides but no real penetration and in
fact, N Ireland played the better football throughout and if
the result was based on points, would surely have won. But
goals count, and what a way to go out as a superb Bale pass
in the second-half (about the only thing he did right, methinks!) in to no mans land in the box, deceived the Irish defenders and resulted in an own goal, being the only score. So
it's adieu to gallant N Ireland but Wales press on and now
face Belgium in the Quarters on Friday in Lille at 9 pm, who at
last are beginning to look like the world's 2nd ranked coun-
