2012 awards ontario camps association Volunteer Recognition Award this award was established to recognize the contributions of volunteers and volunteer members. the Award is presented to individuals whose service and commitment to the organization have merited special mention and to acknowledge a significant and special contribution to the work of the Ontario Camps Association in the year of presentation. 2012 Volunteer Recognition Award Recipients JOHN BERGMAN John has been a member of the special needs resource Committee for well over 20 years. he has also volunteered for a number of OCA committees over the years offering his insight, help and computer marketing skills to help advertise events, thank speakers and much more. John always has a smile and is willing to share his insights and knowledge regarding being a camper, and staff with an additional need, experiencing camps in Ontario. he is not shy to speak up for what he believes in and helps ensure that the Ontario camp community is in the “know” about offering camps to meet the needs of All campers and staff. CHERYL BERNKNOPF What an asset for the health Care Committee when Cheryl joined 13 years ago. Cheryl has most ably chaired the health Care Committee for the past 9 years. she has headed up the Annual health Care Conference with her abounding organizational skills. Cheryl is Assistant Director/senior nurse in charge of health care at Centauri summer Arts Camp. she is part time faculty at seneca College as a clinical instructor to nursing students. At the Association of Camp nurses, she is an executive member and education committee member of the Board. As well, she works for a private company running both flu and health wellness clinics. In her spare time Cheryl volunteers at a hospice. passion drove her to volunteer at Camp sizanani, part of global Camps Africa. Cheryl has been a speaker at many health-related conferences both abroad and locally. Cheryl is truly a woman of bountiful energy who embraces every opportunity to advance and promote the field of camp nursing. w w w. o n t a ri o ca m p s. ca 9 SOL BIRENBAUM sol is a thoughtful, caring, innovative and understanding leader. he also happens to be a “Computer geek” who has worked very hard supporting the OCA in developing the new website. As issues arise, sol meets them with a calm rational approach, providing positive constructive solutions with detailed processes to ensure success. sol was also a member of the service Canada delegation representing OCA Accredited Camps on the issue of non-student Camp staff (Foreign temporary Workers and Canadian Workers). his presence at the meeting was invaluable. sol has incredible business acumen and transcending leadership skills – OCA is so fortunate to have him as member. MARC COOPER his moniker is “Camp Director, Artist, husband & Daddy”. this ‘gentle man’ has the distinction of being our first male volunteer of the health Care Committee. marc joined the health Care Committee over 5 years ago. What a valuable contributor to the team! he also reaches out and volunteers on many OCA committees and events. marc excelled at remaining calm and steady and is a great problem solver. the health Care Committee will miss his lively contributions and his fantastic sense of humour. marc is a person who works with his hands, his head and his heart – a true artist! LEON MUSzYNSKI leon has spent countless hours researching, documenting, negotiating and meeting with service Canada and transport Canada – even in the midst of the busy summer season – in an effort to resolve major issues with temporary Foreign Workers and new vessel licensing regulations. In addition, leon is also reviewing and researching the potential for the OCA to offer accreditation to camps with year-round programs. leon continues to be an astute volunteer with a savvy business sense looking out for the best interests of the OCA and its members in the ever-changing landscape of the camping industry. JONATHAN NYqUIST Jonathan has worked closely with the OCA to guide, lobby and provide feedback regarding the service Canada issues affecting Ontario camps. Jonathan and other OCA representatives gave countless hours to this initiative. he has been a leading OCA partner in opening doors for students and others to find their way into Ontario Camps as staff - adding culture and creativity to numerous camp programs.
