Southsiders bring Vegas to Greenwood with fresh food
and community events
FEATURE
By Nicole Davis
When Stacy Olthoff heard of Hal’s Fabulous
Vegas Bar & Grille, she had to try it. The theme
of Las Vegas brought back some good memories of her wedding in the Nevada city and fun
times spent there. Now having worked for the
Greenwood restaurant for seven years, Olthoff
said she enjoys working for the small business
so much, that she wants to help grow it.
“It is a fun, unique local restaurant,” Olthoff
said. “The owners are great. They really take
care of us. We have so much variety at so many
price points. We make almost everything inhouse. It’s fresh. That sets us apart.”
Just short of being able to gamble, Olthoff
said the restaurant does reflect her memories
of Vegas, and she hopes to incorporate that
with more community events, such as teaching people how to play the card games –people
who hesitate playing at casinos can feel comfortable learning in an environment where no
money is on the line. On Feb. 6, the restaurant
will host a Ladies Night, a shopping event in
connection with Valentine’s Day. Martinis
which normally cost $10, will be on special for
$5. Vendors will set up, including Avon, Healing Hands Massage, Tastefully Simple, Scentsy,
Pure Romance, Rendi and Damsel in Defense.
As the general manager for a year, Olthoff
said that she will continue to look for ways
to promote the restaurant, and says exciting
things are coming soon to Vegas.

Q: What are your best Chinese new year
memories? How do you celebrate the lunar
new year here in The United States?
"My favorite memory
of Chinese New
Year is when I was
at Sugar Grove
Elementary School.
Each year, my mother
would come in and
help my class throw
a Chinese New Year
party. We would
celebrate by eating Chinese food such
as dumplings and steamed rice, making
crafts like paper firecrackers, and then do
the Lion Dance. I also love getting hong

with money!"

"Usually in China, the
family gets together
to celebrate the new
year. We have dinner and we wish each
other health and
hope for the future.
Here in the United
States, we have a

unforgettable
experience in the
countryside. Many
years ago, our
family including my
parents, my aunts
and uncles, brothers
and sisters spent the
new year time in the
village that is my grandma's hometown
of Pucheng, Xi'an. In the country, they
are more traditional than in city, such
as the Miaohui. The Miaohui can be an
open market where you could buy and eat
something, and there also had traditional
shows. This year will be my second time
not at home for Chinese New Year."
Geng Boxin, Greenwood

went back to China.
I went back and saw
everybody and we
had a big dinner on

that all my friends
gathered together
and we went to Liuhe

and made a wish. Here we have friends

a few friends get together and eat Chinese
food."

Residents of Greenwood are invited to attend a town hall meeting on Feb. 1, from 10
a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Greenwood Airport,
Main Terminal, 799 E. County Line Rd.,
Greenwood, IN 46143.
The meeting, which is hosted by the Greenwood Common Council, is designed to be
an open forum to keep the public informed
about things going on in the city.
Since Greenwood Common Council typically meets on the first and third Mondays of
the month, this open forum meeting held on
Saturday is a great opportunity for working
folks to attend.
And it’s important to attend meetings such
as these in order to understand the concerns
of members of your community. Open forums
like this offer citizens a unique opportunity to
play an active role in determining the direction of the city. From friends and neighbors to
business owners and blue collar workers—everyone has a voice to share!
What are your greatest concerns in your
community, Southsiders? Whether your concerns are potholes, school closures, coyotes
or something else entirely, this meeting is the
place to offer your contribution to the Greenwood community.
…………
Another meeting you might want to consider will take place at two Southside Indianapolis library branches. The Indianapolis
Public Library is hosting a series of Yours to
Create: Neighborhood Meeting on the Libraries Strategic Plan. With the first meeting canceled due to the weather conditions, the first
will take place at the Southport Branch on
Feb. 3, 6-8 p.m. The second is at Garfield Park
Branch on Feb. 5, 6-8 p.m. The library CEO
will discuss the vision along with community
needs. We think it’s great that the library is allowing the public to have some insight as to
the future of this needed resource.

January cold slams
small businesses
We have just one more day and the month
of January is officially gone – we think we just
heard a collective hurray!
We don’t believe we have lived through a
more vicious January that the 2014 version.
This month has challenged us all – and, in
particular, the small business owner. We found
this on Facebook from Edwards Drive-In, 2126
S. Sherman Dr., which pretty much sums it up:
“Small, and specifically family owned,
businesses can drastically suffer this time of
year; sales are typically down, and all of us are at
the mercy of Mother Nature. So far, the media
has concentrated their efforts on pointing
out the dangers of the weather, what is being
done by the city to help those that need it, and
what schools are doing because of the weather.
There have been a few small reports about
local businesses, and the hurt they are feeling,
but I do not believe the issue has received the
attention it should.
Here at Edwards, we believe in helping
those that need it, and for giving everyone a
chance. As such, we have quite a few employees
that absolutely depend on their job, on their
opportunity, to survive; typically, its not just that
one person, its the entire family. Our employees'
families depend on us to keep the heat running,
but what happens when we, the restaurant, find
ourselves struggling to keep our heat on?
Due to the weather, and frustratingly display
of "how bad it is out there" by the media, our
sales are drastically down from the previous
year, with no influx in sight. Put simply - this
weather is killing us slowly. And, by extension,
the families of our employees. It won't be the
weather directly that hurts us, it will be the
lack of business that is directly affected by the
weather. So, indirectly, the weather is what is
hurting us all.”
We couldn’t have said it better. Support our
small business - they need it now more than
ever as they continue to dig themselves out of
January’s horrible weather.

The Chinese "Zodiac" is a time cycle that is divided into 12
parts, with each year assigned a different real or legendary animal.
Tradition says that the year of one's birth influences personality,
degree of success, happiness and one's future. Also, the position
on the zodiac in a given year is said to sway events globally.
Last year was the Year of the Snake. The Year of The Horse
begins on the Lunar New Year, Jan. 31. People born during the
year of the horse are said to be active, energetic, and confident.
Below are the birth years associated with each animal.

MATTERS OF HEALTH
Did you know, nearly 200,000 bathroom accidents occur in the US each year, accounting
for 70 percent of all home accidents. Let’s be
honest, our bathrooms are a part of our daily lives. This is why safety in the bathroom
should be a top priority, especially when there
is a physical change or a transition in life.
Consider a few simple measures to make your
“sanctuary” a safer place. Most of these modifications simply require a little foresight along
with minimal to moderate effort and expense
to prevent a serious accident, in addition to
enhancing you or your loved ones sense of security and comfort.
Additionally, having the proper bathroom

2. Floor - Use a slip resistant mat in front of the

or towel bar for support.
4. Toilet – Use a raised toilet seat for seating assistance as well as grab bars.
5. Bathtub or Shower – Use a shower seat
or transfer bench with a hand held shower for
seated bathing.
Be sure to add a tub grab bar or wall mounted bar for assistance entering and exiting the

would be helpful.

Martins celebrate golden anniversary
FOR THE RECORD
Tim and Judy (Crouch) Martin were married 50 years ago, Feb. 1, 1964 at University
Heights Evangelical United Brethren Church,
now University Heights Methodist Church at
4002 Otterbein Ave., Indianapolis. Mr. Martin
retired from the Indianapolis Metropolitan
Police Department after 43 years of service.
He was the Deputy Chief of the South District
for 11 years. Mrs. Martin retired from Perry
Township Schools after 25 years of service.
She served as tutor and library aid. Her last assigned school was Perry Meridian 6th Grade
Academy. The Martins are lifelong Southside
residents that are active in their church, volunteer at various organizations and enjoy
traveling. They have three children, Traci Mason of Greenwood, James Martin of Indianapolis and Crystal Blackwell of Fishers, as well as
seven grandchildren.

Rosegate
Meet Augustine!
Augustine is one of the many independent and active seniors that
you will find here at Rosegate. Augustine moved to Rosegate
from another senior community, where she had resided for the
past two years. She enjoys being active and wanted to be in
a community that offered many opportunities. When she and
her daughter visited Rosegate, she fell in love with our garden
homes. An avid gardener, one thing that was a “must have” was
a place to enjoy her flowers.
The residents at Rosegate are always encouraged to add
personal touches when they move in their new home. Soon after
moving in, Augustine was busy working in her flower garden in
front of her home. She and her daughter both loved the look of
the community and grounds. “The attention to detail and the
upkeep of the community is great, and I won’t have to worry
about shoveling snow this winter!”
Having been a resident here for about 9 months, Augustine is
frequently seen at activities and enjoying breakfast in the dining
room with her neighbors. She is also thinking about joining our
New Energy Wellness fitness program. “I did the right thing by
moving to Rosegate” she said.

Beech Grove Public
Library Board Room
Beech Grove Mayor Dennis Buckley gave the State
of the City Address for 2014 on Jan. 27, reporting
that the city is doing better than expected. In
October 2013, the City Council passed a fully
funded and balanced budget for 2014. In 2013 with
the Main Street reconstruction was the biggest
project that the city had undertaken in years. As
for 2014, the city expects new businesses such as
Waffle House, Steverino’s Eatery, Jimmy John’s and
Beech Grove Senior NRP Group. Speaking of how
the project changed the face of the city, Buckley
stated, “let’s keep good things happening.”
It’s simple, really. How well you retire depends on
how well you plan today. Whether retirement is
down the road or just around the corner, the more
you work toward your goals now, the better
prepared you can be.
Preparing for retirement means taking a long-term
perspective. We recommend buying quality investments and holding them because we believe that’s
the soundest way we can help you work toward
your goals. At Edward Jones, we spend time
getting to know your retirement goals so we can
help you reach them.

Have you had a piece of
humble pie lately?
DEVOTIONAL
By Pastor Paul A. Kirby
"The lofty looks of man shall be humbled,
and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed
down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in
that day. For the day of the Lord of hosts shall
be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and
upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall
be brought low: And the loftiness of man shall
be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men
shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be
exalted in that day. And the idols he shall utterly abolish. And they shall go into the holes
of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for
fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver,
and his idols of gold, which they made each one
for himself to worship, to the moles and to the
bats;" ~ Isaiah 2:11-12 & 17-20
I have come across many arrogant people
in my time and others who were extremely
humble. Those proud (vainly so) of themselves
were the hardest for me to accept or even be
around. We all have the ability to feel that
way about ourselves, our accomplishment but
when I ever begin to feel vain about myself the
Holy Spirit reminds me of something my Savior said, "Without Me, you can do nothing."
I once worked with a man in a factory in Columbus, Ind. We were talking one day about
God and Christ and eternity. He was not exactly an atheist, maybe an agnostic, I really
don't know. But as we talked about my being
a Christian and how that it was that I finally
bowed before Jesus and confessed my sins to
Him and accepted Him as Lord, he made this
comment to me: "I will never bow my knees
to any man, not even Jesus. No one can force
me to do that."
I responded to him with this, "Yes, you
will. Either in this life or in eternity, you will
bow your knee to Jesus and confess that He
is Lord." I believe our conversation about this
subject ended there.
To me it is a privilege and a pleasure to even
find myself in the presence of Jesus Christ and
counted as one of His family members. What
would my life be without Him being who and
what He is? Oh, so many are confused about
this issue today. They never have quite known
their mission in life so they just made it up as
they moved through. I am not saying that everything has been crystal clear, but one thing
I know is this; my life has been an endeavor to
be in the will of God and never to be in opposition to Him in any way. I may not have been
absolutely perfect in my knowledge of what
He has expected of me, but when I did know
that, I surely attempted to measure up to it.
In the last day of time the proud shall be
humbled and the mighty shall be made weak
in the knees. Those who have bragged their
way through life about their accomplishments
achieved on their own will discover that it was
not them at all but God who patiently waited for the moment in time when they would
awaken to the fact that they were His subjects
all along.
May God bless you with a sense of humility
similar to that of Jesus Christ. It will help you
deal with the times when times are too challenging for you and a sense of failure creeps in.
God bless and go and have a great day.

Guests pack into Saints
Francis and Clare Catholic
School for Chili Cook-Off
Fifty chefs competed for a chili award with an
estimated more than700 guests at the Saints
Francis & Clare Catholic School Ministry Chili
Cook-Off, in Greenwood, on Jan. 25. “It seems
to be on par with previous years, with a little
more people,” said Suzi Spayd, organizer. “The
fellowship and being around friends and family is the best part and that our tuition goes
to our tuition assistance fund.” Attendees voted on their favorite chili. The People’s Choice
winner was Jeff & Kaitlyn Ready. The event
brought in $46,954 for the school ministry’s
Godparents fund, which provides financial assistance to students. The fund will support 75
families this year.

may thrive in the future. Haven allows women to live in a Haven Sanctuary home for up to two years during this
transitional process. Haven was recently gifted the use of a home, 198 N. Emerson Ave., Greenwood, for five years.
This home needs help in numerous ways to make it a viable temporary home for those in need and to provide
appropriate services to its residents. Through communications support and physical labor, Haven’s Angels will help
prepare the Haven Sanctuary for Women home to receive families in need.
