INSTALLATION MANUAL COBOGÓ STUDIO CRAFT PORTOBELLO
Revision:
October/2015
This manual is intended to provide general guidance with respect to the products of the Studio Craft
line, such as product characteristics, indication of use, storage, installation and maintenance.
01Products
The cobogós (air vent bricks) of the Studio Craft
collection are handcrafted, in a process in which the
clay is extruded fresh and sintered in furnaces.
Inspired by the wooden muxarabi panels, Cobogó
Studio Craft Portobello is a hollow element that can
be installed indoors and outdoors, ensuring privacy
while allowing the passage of light and ventilation,
whether in residential or commercial areas.
This product has a purposeful shade variation (V4),
that is, there is a shade variation between the pieces
in order to obtain the effect of rustic surface after
installation. It is common to receive pieces with
burned edges.
-
Differences of up to 8mm in all dimensions, irregular edges, scratches and small holes are characteristics
of this type of product that ensure the desired effect of rustic and handcrafted surface after installation.
02 Project
This product was designed to be exclusively used on internal and external walls up to three meters high.
Different situations should be evaluated using more criteria by a qualified professional in design and
installation.
The pieces cannot be cut, so it is necessary to plan the project layout with the use of whole pieces.
Consider each brick with the following dimensions: 26.1x26.4x8.5cm (height, length and thickness). If
necessary, it is possible to adjust the size of the joints (more or less thick) so that the modulation of the
pieces fits the dimensions of the area.
After burning, all pieces of Cobogó Studio Craft receive waterproofing treatment with non-film-forming
water repellent solution. If this product is used outdoors, we recommend the periodic application of
waterproofing products as explained in item 09.
The Brazilian law requires that all construction or renovation works be designed and
monitored by qualified professionals.

Store the boxes of Cobogó Studio Craft indoors in a dry place and on top of a wooden pallet, to prevent
the absorption of moisture from the floor.
Stack up to 3 boxes following the indication of the package. The incorrect storage of the
boxes may damage the coating and cause the subsequent loss of the product.

04 Visual Inspection
Before starting the installation, take the pieces out of the boxes and assemble a panel on the floor as
shown in Photo 03. If you choose to mix several models of this product, assemble the panel to simulate
the installation according to you preferences. See example in photos in 03 and 04.
04
Perform a visual inspection of the background in order to check whether the shade variation of the
pieces is more apparent on one side. If necessary, use pieces from other boxes, making it uniform.

05 On-site Verification
Before laying the bricks, review the layout project and check the place where you will start laying them
(master brick). Check in the layout if all pieces are undamaged. Check the measures on site and make
sure they are in accordance with the layout, otherwise the layout must be corrected so there is no cut in
the pieces.
Check the floor leveling and the nearby wall (support). Irregularities greater than 2 mm at every 2 meters
must be corrected before installation.

This product should be applied in an area with perfectly clean, cured, leveled and waterproofed surface.
Before application, check if the product is clean and dry. For cleaning, use a soft bristle brush and damp
cloth.
06 Installation tools
For best results, we recommend separating all equipment to be used before starting the work.
Materials required:
- Bubble or laser level;
- Carpenter pencil;
- Level tube;
- Measuring tape;
- Metal ruler;
- Metal set-square;
- Sponge for cleaning the pieces;
- Nylon thread:
- Trowel;
- Template (optional).
07 Adhesive Mortar Preparation
For the installation of Cobogó Studio Craft on internal and external walls up to 3 meters high, we
indicate the adhesive mortar Superglass for Glass Blocks produced by Portokoll.
Materials required:
- Drill (maximum 500 rpm);
- Electrical extension cord;
- Fresh water;
- Helical rod for mixing mortar;
- Plastic container for mixing mortar;
- Trowel.
06
Prepare an entire bag of adhesive mortar Superglass for Glass Blocks. For the mixture, read carefully
and follow the instructions on the product packaging. Do not fraction the bag or add water without
measuring it.
The mortar should be mixed in a plastic container (bucket), because the use of wooden boxes changes
the properties thereof.
Pour the entire quantity of water specified in the product package for the mortar mix and add approximately half of the powder from the package, mixing with the aid of a helical rod attached to a drill with
rotation lower than 500 rpm. Note that the use of drills to mix the adhesive mortar above 500 rpm
causes greater incorporation of air, compromising the adhesive strength.
PLEASE NOTE: Household drills may exceed 2,000rpm. Speeds above 500rpm will
compromise the performance of the adhesive mortar.
Mix to a smooth consistency, then add the remaining powder, mixing the mortar until it reaches a pasty
consistency and without lumps. This process takes 3 to 5 minutes.

Photo 11: Mixing with helical rod to

After the initial mixing of the adhesive mortar, let it sit for approximately 10 to 15 minutes (according to
package instructions). This period may vary according to the type of mortar and it is necessary in order
to allow the reaction of chemicals.
While the mixture sits, it is important to manually mix it with the trowel from time to time, but
do not add water after the initial mixing.
08 Laying
We recommend applying this product at the end of the work, avoiding contact with other residues, such
as dust, paint and other materials.
The laying must always begin at the corner or edge determined in the design, after laying the first piece,
place the last block in the final position and stretch out the nylon thread so that the other blocks are
aligned. If you wish, you can use a template for laying this product, but since it may vary in size, these
differences will be visible on one side of the wall.
07
Apply mortar on the piece on the sides that will be in contact with the wall and floor using a spatula in
sufficient quantity for laying and leveling the cogobó blocks. Fill out the joints completely, which must
have at least 10mm. The mortar used for the laying is self-jointing, that is, it is laid and grouted at the
same time Vibrate the pieces so that the mortar spreads throughout the thickness of the blocks and
check the leveling with a bubble level.
When laying the piece, it is common that the adhesive mortar overflows the joints, remove the excess
and wipe the piece with a damp sponge.

For areas with internal laying with height and/or width exceeding 3 meters or above 7m² surface, we
recommend the horizontal locking of the panel. For this, between the pieces, use a flat steel truss for
brickwork at every four rows laid (1.04m).
PLEASE NOTE: The laying outdoors in any width must have vertical and horizontal
locking of the panel using flat truss for brickwork that must be horizontally fixed at
every two rows (0.52m) and vertically at every 1.5 meters.
This reinforcement element should be hidden within the thickness of the joints and firmly fixed in the
masonry or concrete coating it. If you choose to use the flat truss, we recommend the use of a 5cm wide
flat truss, ensuring the complete covering of the metallic element.
We do not recommend laying all the pieces at once. We recommend a 1-day interval at every four rows
laid (1.04m high). It is essential to respect this time to allow the initial curing of the adhesive mortar,
hardening the panel and making it possible to continue laying the remaining rows. If you do not wait for
the curing period of the adhesive mortar, the panel will be unstable and may fall before the end of the
work.
After finishing laying, immediately remove the excess of adhesive mortar with a damp sponge or cotton
cloth.

excess of adhesive mortar and continue after 24
hours
09 Waterproofing
During the production process, the pieces receive water repellent protection to repel water, thus
reducing absorption.
In case of perceptible reduction of this characteristic with the darkening of the pieces in contact with
water, we recommend the application of abrasion-resistant silicone waterproofing that do not shine or
form film on the coating. Do not use acrylic resins. We recommend using Portokoll’s Grout Sealer (Photo
23) or similar product to keep the aesthetic characteristic of the ceramic. Always test it on a small area
before the final application.
We recommend the application of two coats of sealant. The estimated consumption of Portokoll’s Grout
Sealer is 60 ml per piece for the application of two coats.
Any product used in waterproofing, the instructions of each manufacturer should be strictly followed.
Reapply every year or according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Before waterproofing the ceramic, make sure it is completely clean, without dust and grease. To clean
the pieces, use a soft bristle brush or a damp cloth.

PLEASE NOTE: Portobello is not responsible for the poor application and performance
of any waterproofing, including Portokoll’s Grout Sealer.
10 Cleaning and Maintenance
For the daily cleaning of this coating, use a dry or damp cloth and a soft bristle brush/broom or vacuum
cleaner.
The contact with solvent-based products may change and/or damage the finish.
Portobello does not recommend the use of scrub sponges or abrasive material.

13 Glossary
Adhesive mortar: Material used for the laying of ceramic tiles, using Portland cement as the main
binder. It may be mono or bi-component depending on how the polymer that promotes adhesion is
used, powder or liquid, respectively.
Self-jointing mortar: special adhesive mortar for simultaneously laying and grouting tiles and glass
blocks.
Cobogó: the name given to hollow elements that fill out internal and external walls to allow a greater
ventilation and lighting within a building, whether residential, commercial or industrial. Its name comes
from the initials of the surnames of three engineers who worked in the city of Recife and the jointly
conceived it: Amadeu Oliveira Coimbra, Ernest August Boeckmann and Antônio de Góis. Initially, they
were made of cement only, but with their popularization, they started being molded using other materials, such as clay, glass, ceramic, etc.
Template: equipment used to support the elevation of the brickwork, ensuring both plumb and level.
Joint: Regular space between two adjacent ceramic tiles (NBR 13753:1996).
Water repellent: Product used to repel water by reducing the wetting angle of a particular substrate that
can be added to mortar or brickwork or applied thereon.
Pot time: It is the time left for using the adhesive mortar after mixing water to the powder. Usually this
time is two hours.
Open time: The interval during which the adhesive mortar applied on the wall remains capable of
adhering to the ceramic piece to be applied. Usually this time ranges from 10 to 30 minutes depending
on the type of adhesive mortar and the ambient conditions.
