T INGEWICK and District NEWS JULY 2012 Your FREE Magazine ISSUE NUMBER: 211 DIDN’T WE DO WELL!! The rain held off just long enough and the Jubilee celebrations were a huge success. We have reports and pictures from all the events in Tingewick in the blue centre section, and Water Stratford on page 28, with a poem, no less, on page 29. On page 4 we have a related letter. Page 15 has all the information about the Horticultural Society Annual show. We have a couple of particularly interesting and worthwhile charity events - one climbing up and the other falling down. Page 17 reports on a Tingewick girl who is climbing Kilimanjaro for her charity. The Royal Oak advert on page 10 details a charity bungee jump that Tony Diston (yes really!) and others are undertaking. That I must see!!! A late reminder for a couple of village hall events happening on the 29th of June and the 1st of July - see page 11. Look out for aphorisms and paraprosdokians to amuse you inside.... Finally a couple of pleas.. As I reported recently I am going to re-issue the Directory of Local Services. Any local business/club can have a free entry. At the risk of sounding like a Direct Line advert - there really is no catch - it really is completely FREE, whether you advertise with us or not. Contact me! A more serious note to parents. A while ago I raised the issue of children playing on the road on Main Street and around the junction with Sandpit Hill. I regret to say a few children have recently been playing in middle of the road on their scooters and even played football across the road. Worse still, they have chosen the evening rush hour to do it. Perhaps danger is the attraction. So please speak to your children about it. Ask them what (safe!)facilities they would like at the recreation ground. The Parish Council are keen to hear their views and there could be a real opportunity to provide somewhere that is safe to play. One said “ We drive through Tingewick sometimes and usually thought it a bit dull, but this has changed our minds. The display of local history, wonderful patchwork etc were fascinating and the flowers were worthy of any great cathedral. An American lady said “ All fabulous and so interesting. I will take the idea of the memorial pew posies leading up to the alter home with me, and tell my home church all about it. I know they will just love it!!!” Very often the huge amount of thought, time and effort that is needed for this sort of celebration is overlooked. So I just thought it would be nice to let all involved know that they really are admired and appreciated by many. Kitty Norwell is a 20 year old photography student currently studying at Bournemouth University. She grew up in Tingewick, and this coming September she is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the charity Smile Train! Kitty is aiming to raise £1500, which will enable ten children to have the corrective surgery that will completely change their lives. In preparation for the climb kitty has gone on a climbing, camping and team building training course in the Forest of Dean with her group. She has also been riding her bike along Bournemouth coast every night after university and is now circuiting the countryside surrounding Tingewick most evenings after work. Before the climb in September she is also due to climb Mount Snowdon as a warm up exercise with her climbing buddy, and university housemate, Nat. To fund the actual trip itself, Kitty used her savings earned working at several different jobs from a young age - most recently from her photographic work alongside her father Ian Norwell who works as a Commercial Motors Journalist. “I am really looking forward to the whole experience of climbing Kilimanjaro. Taking part in a trip that enables me to see and experience so much truly is a privilege. From flying out there, meeting the locals, experiencing the whole range of African temperatures and weather conditions, camping, climbing and living with the team and porters, and of course - reaching the summit and seeing the sunrise above the clouds! But the warm feeling inside doesn’t stop there, because even when the trip is over I will know that I have partly helped change the lives of ten children. Choosing a charity was really hard, but Smile Train is by far one of the most efficient and effective ones around.” Smile Train gives children all over the world, born in developing countries, a second chance at life, by administrating a basic surgery that only costs £150 per child. Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly, aren't allowed to attend school or hold a job, and face very difficult lives filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache. Their clefts usually go untreated because they are poor – too poor to pay for a simple surgery that has been around for decades. Being born with a cleft in a developing country is truly a curse. Every baby born in Uganda with a cleft is given the name Ajok which means literally, “cursed by God.” Some newborns are killed or abandoned right after birth. Please visit http://www.justgiving.com/kitty-norwell-kilimanjaro for more information and donate anything you can to this amazing cause. All the money that is raised will go straight to the charity. Which is described in the New York Times as being "one of the most productive charities - dollar for deed - in the world" Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 17 TINGEWICK DIAMONDS Wednesday, 4th. From the Tea Dance at the beginning of the weekend, through to the Jubilee Concert on the Monday night, your support has been fantastic. The Jubilee Committee would also like to express their gratitude and thanks to: Hazel and Bob Thurlow, Lois Houghton-Brown, Alec Bone and his band, Felicity Fenemore and Claire Groves, David Partridge, Charlotte Marsden, Bernie Marsden, Chris Smith, John Clucas, Stuart McMahon, Tingewick church flower arrangers, Tingewick Patchers, Tingewick Historical Society, Marianne and Brian Speed, Rita and Mac at the Village Stores and Sandra and Tony at the Royal Oak. Also, for judging the competitions, the Rev. Liz Simpson, Robin Litt, Marion Fenemore and Mrs Hodges and final thanks to the myriad of helpers at all of the events. Competition Winners Thank you to everyone who got into the spirit of the occasion and produced all the wonderful competition entries. The winner of the Best Dressed House is a joint effort by Mr and Mrs Chamberlain of Harbour Lights and Mr and Mrs Lightfoot of Ancient Lights, Main Street The Best Decorated Cake prize was won by Jayne Large and the children’s prize was won by Charlotte Kirkup. As part of the procession, the Best Decorated Wheels competition was won by Gus Richards The Fancy Dress winners were Thomas Gregory in the children’s class and Rebecca McNaught in the adult class. Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 19 The Diamond Jubilee Weekend What a fantastic, action packed weekend it was! Little did we realise when the weekends events were planned that we had picked the perfect day, weather wise, to hold the outdoor events. Tingewick looked extremely festive with all the patriotic street bunting zigzagging through Main Street and beyond, thanks to Richard and Alastair Fenemore. The houses that had gone to so much effort to continue the theme all round the village are to be commended for their imagination and decorative skills! The first event of the weekend was the Tea Dance on Saturday afternoon in the Village Hall. Tea Dance The Jubilee Celebrations began with a step back in time as the village hall was transformed for an afternoon of ballroom dancing. The programme created by Hazel Thurlow was a tremendous success with dances offered for all abilities. The pasadoble was great fun and Lois Houghton-Brown took first prize for her impression of a bull! The dancing was complemented by a high tea of sandwiches, cream scones and Victoria sponges being served by traditionally dressed tea maids. Overall the event was a great success and something the committee would be keen to do again, so watch this space. Carol Doherty 'Tingewick's Got Talent' What a night! We had a wonderful evening - the sun shone, the village hall was full, our sixteen or so talented performers pulled out all the stops, causing the audience to erupt with heavy clapping and appreciation. Our performers ranged from 5 years old to older! and I would like to thank Anthony, Liz and Liv, Freddie, Jessica, Chloe, Ben, William, Edward and Rory, Charlotte, Stuart, Robbie, Eleanor, Ashaleigh and Hannah, Alex, Bethany and 'All that Jazz' (Alec on Alto Sax, Caz on Clarinet and Steve on Bass Guitar.) for taking part. It is a huge thing to stand up on stage and perform, and they all managed it wonderfully. Apart from singing, and the playing of the accordion, guitar, keyboard and violin, we were treated to some magic, break dancing, recitation and a musical trio for the finale. Unfortunately Mary Watkins was unable to join us for the performance, but we thought of her and wished her well as Anthony read her poems. Thank you to everybody for coming along to support the performers, and to parents and friends, for helping them practice. Thank you to the Everest Family for the loan of their keyboard, to Stuart for organising 20 Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 the microphones, and to Caz and Steve for lending their computer for backing! Thanks too must go to Fran and all her helpers who decorated the hall for all the events, and for refreshments. To Tony Diston for being over the road so that he could supply drinks before the interval! I hope that we can have another 'Tingewick's Got Talent' next year at about the same time. Watch this space! Lois Houghton Brown Jubilee Church Service The village gave strong support to the service that celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee on Sunday, 3rd. June. Over 100 adults and children braved the weather and made their way up Church Lane to Saint Mary Magdalen, encouraged by the bell ringers who played both before and after the service. Hannah Smart (our youngest bell ringer) and Peter Smith (Chairman of the Parish Council) each read a lesson and I had the satisfaction and pleasure in taking the service that the Rev’d Liz Simpson had compiled for our use around the Benefice. Saint Mary Magdalen was dressed for the occasion. The flowers and their arrangements were breathtakingly beautiful. I wasn’t the only one to be impressed. The exhibitions attracted interest, both on the Sunday and the following two days of public holidays, when the church was open for people to browse them. The Tingewick Patcher’s Jubilee Quilt, The Trades of Tingewick exhibition on loan from the Historical Society, the school children’s art exhibition and the pew end ‘in memorium‘ flower displays all played a part in making the service a memorable event. Our thanks to the many people who were involved in designing and constructing them. Chris Carter. Procession/Sports At 12’o clock Princesses and Kings began gathering at the bottom of Church Lane. All the children had union jack flags. Then the band began to play and everyone was off, led by Claire Groves and Felicity Fenemore; wheeling scooters, riding bikes and pushing pushchairs. It was a long walk for some, but the spectators and the VW Camper at the rear ensured no-one got left behind, the latter patiently waited as I struggled to free my daughter’s white gown from the wheel of her scooter only yards from the recreation ground. From within the procesTingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 21 sion it felt great to walk along the road waving to familiar faces – I hope everyone enjoyed it. At about 2pm some of the children at the fete took part in some ‘sports day’ style races. My fantastic assistant Ben Schellenburg organized the children into roughly equal teams and they enjoyed a couple of team relays, as well as egg & spoon, sack and 3-legged races. Charlotte Marsden helped with shouting instructions to the excited youngsters, and Dominic Bell & David Smart issued stickers to the winners of each race. Everyone went away with medals, lollies and smiles – so I think it was a success. Rebecca McNaught Fete Beer Festival The best ever! It must have been the fingers firmly crossed and the prayers offered that ensured the good weather broke through long enough for us to enjoy what many people said was “the best ever fete”. In spite of numerous other local Jubilee attractions, residents turned out in large numbers to support the event and help make it an outstanding success. After the fancy dress procession had paraded down Main Street and assembled in the arena for the judges’ verdict, the Official Opening was performed in style by The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow MP The sun shone, residents poured in and the afternoon was buzzing. Music from Alec Bone and Friends was adding to the lively atmosphere, the real ale and Pimms were disappearing rapidly, as were the tea and cakes in the refreshment tent. The pig roast and the BBQ sold out and there wasn’t a crumb left on the cake stall. In the background the sun was bouncing off the gleaming polish of the magnificent classic car display with a total of 84 cars, including a lorry and a motorised bicycle. The dog show was a major attraction, as usual, along with the newest event, the ferret racing, a real country pursuit! The decorated cake competition saw some highly creative interpretations of the Jubilee theme. All stallholders and attractions were busy throughout the afternoon, keeping visitors entertained and amused and raising funds for their various groups and charities. (There is no charge for local groups and organisations who are able to retain everything they raise) Thanks must go to the Fete Committee and their families, and to all their helpers who, as well as helping on the day, also braved the bad weather when setting up on Sunday and who helped to clear up and pack everything away on Tuesday. And especial thanks to all who attended and helped to make it a real community event and a fitting part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebration weekend. 22 Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 Jubilee Concert Tingewick’s Jubilee celebrations were drawn to a close to the sounds of our own live concert brought to us by Bernie Marsden and his band with the help and organisational skills of Dave Partridge. More than 200 people made their way up to the recreation ground to enjoy an evening of high quality music, dancing, beer and bacon baps. As the sun went down, the concert was opened by Cherry Lee Mewis and her band, who lived up to the description on her website of ‘powerhouse singer songwriter Afterwards, Tingewick was treated to a mix of well-known Blues and rock songs by Bernie Marsden, finishing with his most famous ‘Here I go again’. Friends in the village who had young family from outside of the village concluded that ‘Tingewick rocks’! The Diamond Jubilee events raised considerably more money than was expected and approximately £2000 will be distributed to village charities in the near future There are still some free children’s mugs that are unclaimed. In addition there are still a few left for sale if you want one. Use the link below to find out about your Neighbourhood Policing team and view the March Neighbourhood Update:Buckingham North - http://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/yournh-tvp-pol-area-n119.htm SUMMER BURGALRY REDUCTION PROGRAMME At this time of year, with warmer weather and people enjoying their gardens it can be all too easy to inadvertently give burglars an invitation into your home. In around 25% of offences in the spring and summer months, entry is gained through insecure windows and doors. Opportunist burglars might:• enter an insecure front door while residents are in the back garden • enter doors that are closed but unlocked at night. • reach through open windows to take valuable items To help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary, consider the following advice:• Ensure that windows and doors are closed and locked when you are out. • When out in your back garden ensure that windows and doors to the front of the house are secure. It only takes seconds for someone to get into your home and take things without you noticing. • Do not leave valuables on display in front of windows or in reach of open windows or doors. • Consider fitting outside security lighting or a visible alarm to help deter burglars. • Don’t leave any keys near entry points where they can be ‘fished’ or ‘hooked’ out through windows, letter boxes or cat flaps. • Double lock uPVC doors when you are out and overnight – by pulling up the handle and locking, using the key. Security of sheds and outbuildings:Sheds are often unprotected and lack basic security measures. They often contain property that can be sold on or implements that could be used to force entry into the owner’s home. • By using tamper proof screws or coach bolts together with a good quality pad bar or hasp and staple and close shackled padlock, the shed owner will make it harder for the would-be thief. • Bond window glass in, with mastic to prevent easy removal. Windows can also be fitted with a grille. • Ensure all tools are locked away when not in use. • A shed alarm can also be installed. • Post-code all property such as lawnmowers, bikes, and tools, using UV pens, engravers or even household paint. Forensic marking kits, such as Selecta DNA or Smartwater, are also available to purchase. If you are going on holiday consider:• Make your home look occupied. Use a timer light and ask a friend or neighbour to move post away from the front door and open and close your curtains. • See if a neighbour can park their car on your driveway. • Cut the front and back lawns before you go away. • Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries. Ask a neighbour to bring your wheelie bin back to your property after it has been emptied. • Before your holiday, don’t advertise that you are going away on Facebook, Twitter etc. • Leave important documents and valuable personal items with other family members or a bank. • Double-check that you've locked all outside windows and doors. • Set your burglar alarm if you have one. Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 25 Lastly, remember to report any suspicious activity to the Police when it is happening. Don’t leave it to someone else to make the call – you might be the only one to witness it. If you follow this advice, it will greatly reduce the chances of your property being broken into by an opportunist criminal. Top Roof Coating & First Choice Property Maintenance Buckinghamshire Trading Standards is warning Buckinghamshire residents to be aware that the above companies cold-calling at homes in the County recently. The companies have both attempted to deceive consumers into believing that they need urgent or unnecessary work carried out on their roofs and failed to provide written cancellation rights, as required by law. Eventually we formed our committee of four ladies. Ten years ago we had a Committee of ten! By the month of May we had achieved a great deal despite major battles over road closure, lack of money and, everyone’s favourite, Health and Safety! A lot of households are not internet enabled, so visiting every household personally was time consuming but often very successful, if only fromthe “lovely to chat to people you don’t see every day” angle! As a consequence of lots of meetings, the morning finally arrived, at least dry (that was a novelty in itself), getting up at 4.30am was indicative of the concern I felt that our day should go without ahitch. I wonder how many of us realise, how incredibly lucky we are to live in a community that still cares, that is still beautiful, that is still capable of that pulling-together spirit. Well we do, and we appreciate it. The effort everyone put in on the morning was amazing: tents and bunting going up; food arriving; coffee for all these workers; in all the neighbouring households food preparation going on. That wonderful atmosphere continued right through the day, smiling faces (a lot with beautiful hats – best dressed hat competition!), friendly chat, super Pimms, truly amazing food, even sunshine and such a wonderful toast to our Queen. Never to be forgotten the enthusiastically- entered games, raffles and competitions, of course there was lots of rivalry and probably a little sabotage. To complete this wonderful occasion we returned to the Old School, where we had a fantastic celebration cake and fairy/butterfly cakes, decorated in all things British. A most joyous event, and in years to come, when you come across the programme whilst tidying a cupboard, you may think back and smile, remembering the sunshine the laughter and the peoplethat made the day of the Water Stratford Diamond Jubilee so special. Thank you Your Majesty for giving us the reason! I am sure the many people who enjoyed these celebrations want to say a huge thank-you to the committee of Susan Ford, Barbara Prideaux, Dawn Rogers and Teresa Smith, and to games organizer Suzanne Burgin, for all their imagination, attention to detail and sheer hard work which gave us such a happy, entertaining and memorable day. GOLDEN WEDDING Congratulations to Gerald and Judy Harris on their Golden Wedding anniversary, celebrated with a wonderful surprise holiday in Madeira organised by their daughter, Tracey. Gerald and Judy thank everyone for the many cards and good wishes they received, and we wish them many more golden years. 28 Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 The food was delicious Provided by all It really did go down a treat We toasted The Queen What a star she has been To achieve this remarkable feat Water Stratford Diamond Jubilee Street Party We had meetings galore Notes all over the floor Ideas going backwards and forth We had so much to do And think about too But we sorted it out in due course Now red tape abounds Insurance was found To cover this royal event First aiders we need Supervisors agreed And we must write a risk assessment The Queen was invited And sent us a note To say sorry she just couldn’t come But have a good day With the games that you play It all sounds such jolly good fun. The games were so merry We did have a laugh In the paddock so sunny and green Pinned tails on the corgi Ran along on three legs And also played dress up the Queen Then Jubilee Cake What a wonderful sight Three tiers and chocolate too The hats were divine The diamonds did shine Bows, flowers and a touch of frou frou We want to say thanks For the help that you gave It couldn’t have worked without you It just goes to show When we all have a go There is nothing we really can’t do We gave out jam jars And pleaded for help To pay for this special event The programme was written With zeal we were smitten A great day our only intent We bought bunting and banners Party hats and some flags In the colours of red, white and blue We put up the tables And set out the chairs And prayed for some good weather too We’ve kept all the letters The lists and the notes It’s all written down line by line We’ll gladly hand over The files and the folder To those who arrange it next time. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut and still think they are sexy. Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 29 30 Tingewick and District News Issue 211 - July 2012 Pond News Hi there duck lovers, it’s time for this month’s bulletin of events at the pond! This month has been much quieter than last month, thank goodness. No new ducklings having hatched as yet, but there have been some reports of new nesting sites so we are awaiting news as I write to you. Firstly you may remember that last month I told you that a duck had been disturbed while nesting in Main Street? Well this was, I believe, Whiskey as she had returned to the pond after an absence, but she has now disappeared again and a report has been received that a duck matching her description is nesting in another garden in Main Street. Thanks to the resident for reporting this and we hope to have news from Whiskey soon. Squeak. on the other hand, has now not been seen for quite some time, and her partner, Big Boy seems to have taken up with Tabby. So I am afraid that we must fear the worst for poor old Squeak, and just hope that she does turn up in the future. Angel has also started nesting again following her first attempt last month when all her eggs proved to be infertile. Better luck this time Angel! Also reported to be nesting again is our old favourite Snowflake! She has already hatched one clutch of ducklings this year and has started a nest at her favourite place since then, which she abandoned, but is now trying again in Strangers Lane. Good luck Snowflake! Dot may also be nesting but this is just assumed by her recent absence from the pond, not by any reports received, so if you have spotted a white and black duck nesting in your garden please let Jenny know on 848026. Apart from that all of our ladies appear to be at the pond most of the time, and as we are now getting quite late into the breeding season the aforementioned ducks may be the last mums to produce this year. Now all of the maternity units have been emptied ready for any new arrivals. On Jubilee weekend Della was returned to the pond along with Autumn, with their ducklings going to the ponds in Radclive where a lot of our babies go to start their new lives. Now I must say Thank-you to Ann for her donation for duck food, a little belated due to a minor identity mix up last month! But better late than never! I must also appeal once again for anyone who is interested in taking over our care to contact Jenny on the number previously mentioned, as she is hoping to retire from her duties very soon following five years’ dedicated service to us. It is a very rewarding job, only requiring a few minutes a day for most of the year, and a bit more time during the breeding season, so please folks don’t leave us to fend for ourselves!
