“India is one of the fastest growing countries
at present and it has made rapid strides in
various fields. There has been a remarkable
growth in a number of industries, especially
in chemical processing, petrochemical,
pharmaceutical, biotechnology, refinery,
shipping, power, infrastructure, etc. However,
there is a long way to go as the growth of
Indian economy needs major thrust in the
manufacturing sector to meet the growing
domestic demand, which will give much
required push to the growth of the allied
sectors.”
“It is very heartening to note that Chemtech
Foundation has come back to South after a
break of about 12 years. I have been involved
with Chemtech’s international conferences
and exhibitions for long, and I have observed
that these programmes have been extremely
useful from different point of view. This is
an excellent platform for industry to come
together, network, discuss, exchange ideas,
and find solution to the prevailing issues or
problems, the industry faces. This is palace
where you can get several ideas from your
peers to solve a problem. ”

Several projects in India are in the pipeline
and it will require herculean efforts from
the EPC companies, associated engineers,
and different component and equipment
manufactures to ensure the country achieve
the targeted growth within the stipulated time
frame.”
“It is indeed a matter of delight that we have
a multi-disciplinary conference and exhibition,
where different verticals are covered as the
core themes. What delights me the most
is the fact that the conference also covers
‘water’ as one of the most crucial elements
for industrial growth. Water is indeed a
crucial element for sustainable development
of chemical and petrochemical industry.”

“It is indeed a privilege to be present in
Chemtech South 2013. This is certainly a
forum, where we can discuss how we can
preserve our one of the biggest natural
resource – water. … In the last two
decades, we have witnessed an increase
in the population in coastal region, and
hence technology to convert sea water into
potable water will play an important role.
And I believe, forums like this, will certainly
allow experts to come together, discuss
and promote innovation, and strategise the
sustainable growth.”
“Chemtech Foundation has been organising
international trades shows and exhibitions

Session - IV - Panel Discussion
“Improving Transparency and Relationship
Management Between Customers & Contractors for the
EPC Projects”
ChemTECH - EPC South 2013 hosted a panel discussion on “IMPROVING TRANSPARENCY AND RELATIONSHIP
MANAGEMENT BETWEEN CUSTOMERS & CONTRACTORS FOR THE EPC PROJECTS” on October 10, 2013,
where eminent panelists namely Mr B Narayan, Group President (Procurement & Projects), RIL, Mr Samik
Mukherjee, Managing Director, Technip KT India Ltd., Mr Chandra Moily, Commercial Operation Director,
Foster Wheeler India Pvt Ltd, and Mr T S Ramachandran, Director – Technical, CPCL, debated and discussed
a number crucial points such as complexities of EPC projects, financial strengths of owner and contractor,
contracting modes, and the focus of the debate – Transparency in Relationship, to name a few. Mr B Narayan
moderated the session.
“Sad, but it is true that in India, there is
no EPC company that is ready to take
financial risks. Be it a foreign contractor
with their offices in India or a domestic
player, they do not have enough financial
strength and hence, they are not able to
sign performance bonds and make down
payment to the vendors.”
Mr B Narayan
Group President (Procurement &
Projects), RIL
“Globally, projects are becoming bigger and
more complex stretching the resources and
competencies and capabilities of the value
chain… Industry is indeed moving towards
‘partnerships’ a lot”.
“Overseas, lots of contracts are executed
on convertible lumpsum turnkey method,
which is open for multinational contractors,
and whenever the project schedule are tight
and the scope definitions are not so clear,
it is easier for a customers and end users
to start the project off the ground, spent an
initial sum of money, and as they realise the
definition, they are able to form a possible
contracting strategy. So, convertible
lumpsum is not a norm, but prevalent
in many parts of the world. If there is a
good relationship between the contractor
and user, this can be a good mechanism
indeed.”

Industry Automation & Control (IAC) 2013 – themed as “AUTOMATION FOR PROCESS RELIABILITY”
– was inaugurated on October 11, 2013 in the presence of Guest of Honour Mr L Radhakrishnan
(IAS), Principal Secretary, Department of Home, the Government of Kerala. Mr Maulik Jasubhai, Group
CEO, Jasubhai Group, welcomed the gathering, where Mr Prasad K Panicker, Executive Director, Kochi
Refinery, BPCL, Mr A S Basu, Managing Director, CPCL, Mr Sanjay Joshi, Managing Director, Aker
Solutions, and Mr Arun Dev, General Manager, Larsen & Toubro Valves, delivered keynote addresses.
We are really happy that some of the major industry leaders from the established companies have
continued to support through all these years. We are happy to receive the enormous response in
Chennai.
“Industrial automation is essential to enhance
efficiency of a plant and reduce cost.
Automation technologies not just monitor
processes, but some of them are actually
running industrial processes. There has been
a great amount of increase in the usage
of automation technologies not only in the
manufacturing and process control but also
in the management of several other activities
within an organisation.”
Mr L Radhakrishnan (IAS),
Principal Secretary, Department of Home,
Government of Kerala
“It was here in 1988, where Chemtech
Foundation organised its first seminar on
Electronics, Instrumentation and Automation
in Process Industry. And since then,
Instrumentation and Process Control became
integral part of Chemtech’s international
seminars and exhibitions. The seminar
marked the beginning of the new chapter
in the story of Chemtech, and served the
purpose of initiating a platform for automation
as an important subject within process

“Process safety management is the
forefront requirement in any project in
refineries… Numerous recent incidents
across the industry have highlighted the
need to pay extra attention to process
safety, which mean blending engineering
and management skills focused on
preventing catastrophic accidents”
Mr P Kumaraswami
General Manager, In-charge – Projects
Kochi Refinery, BPCL
“With an expanding horizon of Automation
to the second-tier equipment, achieving
a world-class performance remains a
distant dream. Automation through real
time monitoring and protection also comes
handy in the circumstances where the
response time available for the operator or
maintenance technician to act and prevent
failure is so little that catastrophic failure
can be prevented. Centralised online asset
monitoring also eliminates the need to
send personnel into the hazardous for data
acquisitions.”
Mr A S Basu, MD, CPCL
“We are in the world of innovation. Be
it chemical & petrochemical industry
or oil and gas industry, there has been
a significance growth in the innovation
in automation and control side. The
automation industry has really made huge
progress and that is driven by number of
factors including the growing demand for
safety and security, need for minimum
downtime, need for scalable solutions,
to ensure fast tract commissioning, and
to ensure sustainable development all
around.”
“I would like to compliment Chemtech
Foundation for their service to the industry,
and brining Chemtech International
Conferences and Exhibitions back to
Chennai after a long time. This exhibition
and conferences have created an excellent
platform to network and to bring end users,
contractors, equipment manufactures
together on a common platform to
exchange ideas, understand the issues
and to look for solutions for the win-win
situation for the entire industry.”

Process Safety
“The level of risk is determined by the
probability of occurrence of hazards and
its consequences. Though, nothing can
be made absolutely risk free in a process
plant, we must ensure to avoid the failure
in the best possible manner, and it can be
ensured to a great extend while designing
a plant”.
“A fieldbus is a digital, two-way, multi –drop

as a local area network (LAN), for advanced
process control remote input/output
application.”

“Safety of a unit is a primary concern, and we really need to take care of bothersome trips, which affect the
profitability of an organisation by forcing unnecessary shut-downs….We need to ask ourselves… What can go
wrong?… What controls are in place?…. And if the controls continue to operate as intended?”
Mr Ashok Simon
Chief Manager – Projects, BPCL
Session - II
Flow Measurement for Custody Transfer
“The objective of auditing and validation
is to detect and identify potential
measurement sources of errors so as
to implement corrective measures and
improve the uncertainty level associated
with the measurement. Incorrect installation
such as not providing the required straight
pipe length may distort the profile.”
Mr Sivaprakash K G
“Just the meter accuracy is not sufficient to
get system accuracy; we need to check the
total system uncertainty. No single metering
solution is perfect for all application…. A
nominal pressure drop across the system is
necessary to get good system uncertainty”.
Mr Chacko Andrews
Associate Vice President
Chemtrols Industries Ltd
Chief Research Engineer
Fluid Control Research of India (FCRI)
“The accuracy of measurement and the repeatability of measurement are very critical when you use a meter on
a custody transfer applications, because there are two entities involved one is buyer and second is the seller.
Keeping the fact in mind, GE has introduced few technologies in the measurement of ultra sound so as to ensure
that we get not only the highly accurate result but also the repetitive results.”

Cyber Security for Plant Automation
The ChemTECH – IAC South 2013 conference was concluded with a comprehensive discussion among
Mr Sony Anthony, Director, IT Security, KPMG Advisory Services, Mr PLN Murthy, DGM Maintenance,
Mumbai Refinery, BPCL, Mr Amitava Biswas, Country Head, HPS, India, Mr Akilur Rahman, Global Head
of Control Systems Engineering and Cyber Security, ABB Process Automation, on “CYBER SECURITY
FOR PLANT AUTOMATION.” All the panelists spoke at length on several issues such as cyber security
and its inroads in IT, significance of cyber security, rapidly changing technologies, etc. Mr PLN Murthy,
who shared insights into some of the nuisances that need to be considered while ensuring IT security,
moderated the discussion.

Head of Control Systems Engineering and Cyber
Security, ABB Process Automation
“We all know that cyber security has its
inroads in IT, IT Networks and It Systems;
however, it has not made that level of
intrusion in process automation networks.
It is largely because process automation
networks and systems have been isolated
and they have been proprietary in nature.
Whenever process automation systems
have evolved, they have concentrated
more on real time operations, functionality
and performance, and security has been
last point of consideration for process
automation networks”
“Just imagine a scenario when you need
to fix a patch in your systems urgently…
you transfers the file through a pen drive
and in haste, you forget to scan it and get
your systems infected with some virus.
One should be very careful while using
such devices as a little ignorance can harm
your system. Such nuisances need to be
considered thoroughly. ”

“We are using the IT technologies in
the process control domain to make the
process more flexible and increase the
productivity. It is not just the inbuilt security
features of the software, but I think, a lot of
efforts need to incorporate from owners or
operators side as well to ensure the security
in the projects and in the operations….. We
need to be tuned to the rapidly changing
technologies.”
