Fort Mitchell - City of Fort Mitchell KY
Fort Mitchell
Dear Residents,
There are a lot of new and exciting things in the works for the City of Fort
Mitchell. We are actively exploring a partnership with Beechwood Schools to
place a School Resource Officer (SRO) in the school. The daily presence of an
SRO would be beneficial for the students and staff while providing all of us with
additional peace of mind. We are hopeful that we will be able to achieve this
partnership in the coming months, continuing a concerted effort for the City to
partner with Superintendent Dr. Hutton, and the Beechwood School Board.
Our city staff has done a wonderful job in securing grants. In the last six months
Fort Mitchell has secured over $35,000 in safety and Homeland Security related
grants. It is refreshing to see some of our tax dollars returned to benefit our
community.

You probably have seen recent newspaper articles about the demolition of the
Drawbridge. We are hopeful that we will be able to share a development plan for
this project in the coming months, which contains the details and amenities we
hope to bring to the area with the project’s developers on this critical project for
our community. While we were sad to see the demolition begin, we are excited
to be working towards another landmark redevelopment project for our City and
region.
In the coming months, you will also notice a custom City of Fort Mitchell sign
being placed near the Dixie Highway exit. Special thanks are due to MercedesBenz of Fort Mitchell for their support and partnership with the City on this project.
Due to changes in redistricting, all voting precincts have changed except for
precinct 7. If you are not sure of your voting precinct, visit the City web site at
www.fortmitchell.com for a link that will take you to the Voter Information Center.
You simply put in your name and date of birth and it will provide your exact voting
location. These changes are in effect going forward including the upcoming May
primary.
We are entering our busy street repair season. The following streets are
scheduled to be repaired or resurfaced this year: portions of Beechwood, Page,
Grace Court, Marquette, O’Brien, Wexford, sections of Edenderry, Sheffield and
Longmeadow. Fortside, Summit Lane and Park will have storm sewers replaced
this year in advance of complete road reconstruction in 2015. Please call the City
for any questions regarding these projects.
As always, we remain committed to serving you, providing the best possible
service at the best value for your tax dollars. If we can be of any assistance,
please let us know.

History Lesson about Our City
The original town of Fort Mitchell was incorporated in March 1910, and at that time it included the
area between the Dixie Highway (then called the Lexington Pike) on the east and the present site
of the Fort Mitchell County Club on the west, and between St. John’s Cemetery on the north and
Maple Avenue on the south. In May 1927, the residents to the south of the original town chose to
incorporate as the town of South Fort Mitchell. Through subsequent annexations, the two towns
became contiguous and, 40 years later, during the general election of 1966, their electorates
approved a merger, with the combined towns now known as the City of Fort Mitchell.
The City was named after “Fort Mitchel” (through an oversight, the name of the town was spelled
with two L’s). The exact location of Fort Mitchel is believed to have been on the hill between the end
of Summit Lane and Barrington Road near the Dixie Highway.
It was one of 23 Civil War forts and batteries manned by the Union armies and located on the hills
and ridges of Northern Kentucky. Their primary function was to protect the City of Cincinnati from
invasion by Confederate armies. Cincinnati was extremely important to the Union because it was the
largest meat packing, manufacturing and river harbor city in this part of the nation.
It was common during the Civil War to name encampments after the living as well as the dead. Fort
Mitchel was named after General Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel, a general in the Union army. General
Mitchel was born in Goss, Kentucky, and received his training at West Point, graduating fifth in a
class which included Robert E. Lee.
In addition to a distinguished military career, Mitchel was a professor of mathematics and philosophy
at Cincinnati College and was instrumental in helping to establish Cincinnati College’s Law School.
In 1836, he established Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel’s Institute of Science and Language, located
on the corner of Broadway and Third Street in Cincinnati. Sometime between 1842 and 1845, he
founded the Cincinnati Observatory, which at the time of its founding on Mt. Adams housed the
second largest telescope in the world.
Following the outbreak of the Civil War, he accepted the rank of brigadier general in the Union Army
and was involved in organizing the Northern Kentucky defenses of Cincinnati. In 1862, he led his
forces from Shelbyville, Tenn. to Huntsville, Ala., where they surprised and captured the city and
gained control of the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. After this campaign, he was promoted
to major general and was transferred to South Carolina, where he took command of 4,500 Union
soldiers. Unfortunately, his command was decimated by yellow fever. General Mitchel died while
serving at a second Fort Mitchel, also named for him and located in South Carolina inside Hilton
Head Plantation.

A Message From SD1: Adopt healthy household habits to keep water clean
When rain water falls to the ground it flows over driveways, lawns and sidewalks, picking up debris,
chemicals, dirt and other pollutants. This polluted rain water flows untreated down a local storm drain or
directly into streams that our communities use for swimming, fishing and providing drinking water.
SD1’s responsibility is to find cost-effective solutions that help minimize rain water pollution. We continuously
monitor water quality in local streams because polluted storm water has health and safety impacts on our
entire region. Our goal is to prevent waterborne disease, keep our natural areas visually pleasing and make
sure that we don’t pollute the waterways from which we get our drinking water.
By using the provided information about healthy household habits, you can protect our region’s water
resources.
Vehicle and Garage
• Wash your car on your lawn or another unpaved surface, or visit a commercial carwash facility to reduce
the amount of dirty, soapy water flowing into the storm drains.
• Check your car, boat, motorcycle, machinery and other equipment for leaks and spills often and make
repairs immediately. Clean up any spills with an absorbent material like kitty litter or sand, and don’t rinse
spills into a nearby storm drain.
• If you change the oil in your vehicle at home, recycle the used oil at participating service stations. NEVER
dump used oil or other fluids down a storm drain or dispose of them in your trash.
Homes Repair
• Construction tools and containers should be washed out on an unpaved surface and never in a catch
basin. Debris, such as concrete and mortar should be disposed of properly.
• Clean paint brushes in a sink, not outdoors. If using paint thinner to clean your paint brushes, set the
used thinner aside in a closed jar to settle paint particles. Then, pour off the clear liquid for future use and
dispose of the residue as a hazardous waste.
• Properly dispose of unused paint through a household hazardous waste collection program, or donate to
local organizations.
Lawn and Garden
• Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly, and follow directions on the label to apply only the recommended
amounts. If fertilizers and pesticides are applied too heavily, excess nutrients and chemicals can be
washed into local waterbodies and could cause algal blooms.
• Incorporate native grasses and plants into your landscaping that are adapted to the local environment and
are less likely to need supplemental nutrients.
• After working on your lawn, clean up yard debris and dispose of properly. Do not dump debris in drainage
swales or catch basins.
Pet Care
• Bacteria from pet and animal waste constitute a major pollutant of concern in Northern Kentucky’s
waterways. While we cannot control the waste that comes from wildlife, we can control the environmental
impact of our pet waste. When walking your pet, remember to pick up waste and dispose of it in a trash
receptacle.
Swimming Pool and Spa
• Swimming pools and spas may only be drained into the storm water system if a test kit detects no chlorine
in the water. Otherwise, you must drain the water into the sanitary sewer system via an indoor floor drain.
• Properly store pool and spa chemicals to prevent leaks and spills, preferably in a covered area to avoid
exposure to rainfall.
For more information, visit www.sd1.org, email [email protected] or call SD1’s Storm Water Hotline at
859-578-6745.

appointment up today.
• Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause
of death among children ages 1 to 19
• Children should ride in a back seat until they are
at least 13 years of age
• The overall critical misuse for child restraints is
about 73 percent

use by our EMS personnel.
Files of Life may be obtained by
contacting the FMFD at 859-331-1267.
Fire Hydrant Safety Regulations
Fire Hydrants are critical to successful Fire Department
operations. Residents can NOT paint
hydrants. The FMFD does come around
periodically and paint hydrants so they are
not unsightly.
Fire Hydrants can NOT have landscaping
placed within five feet around them (per City
Ordinance). It hinders the ability to locate
and use the hydrant.
The FMFD will remove any items they determine cause
a hindrance to the operation of the fire hydrant.
Hydrant Flushing
Watch for signs at the main entrance of your
neighborhood for dates and times when the
FMFD and the Northern KY Water District
will be testing fire hydrants. We suggest
you refrain from doing laundry at this time,
because its is possible the process may cause
water discoloration.
Grant Funding
The FMFD recently received a grant in the amount of $30,000 from the
Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. These funds have been used to
purchase a new cardiac monitor to be used on Emergency Medical calls
by our Paramedics.
The FMFD also recently received grant funds from FM Global, a leader in
the fire prevention market, for the purchase of tablet computers to be used
for the purpose of conducting fire inspections and pre-incident planning
at our local businesses. These funds will allow our personnel to also
access our fire department record systems while operating outside of the
firehouse. The total amount of this award was $3,000.
