Blowing Rock is a vibrant small town whose pristine landscapes and easygoing atmosphere have endeared it to both seasonal visitors and full-time residents for over 125 years. Throughout its history, the village has preserved its humble roots while transforming into a nationally-renowned vacation destination, and today, it entertains tens of thousands of first-time visitors and returning guests each year. With a wealth of opportunities for recreation, shopping, dining, and cultural amenities, in addition to first-rate accommodations and local institutions, Blowing Rock represents a wonderful fusion of the nostalgic and the modern. 2 A History of Blowing Rock Adapted from works by Jerry Burns In September 1752, a team of eight men set out from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania toward Edenton, North Carolina. They were commissioned by the Earl of Granville to locate lands that had been purchased for a future Moravian settlement. It was not meant to be an arduous journey. Several members of this party were familiar with the foothills of North Carolina. Group members Herman Lash and Andrew Lambert had even lived in the region, while two other men in the group were experienced guides. But, shortly after crossing over the state line, the party missed the eastern trail which would take them into the Yadkin area. Instead, they moved west into the Blue Ridge Mountains, and this mistake was not caught until the swift, punishing arrival of winter. Once inclement weather set in, the Bethlehem group was forced to continue 3 moving west in search of shelter. They camped first in the Globe Valley and continued north toward the summit of the mountain. Moravian bishop August Spangenburg, who had accompanied the group, described their experiences in his personal journal: “…we came into a region from which there was no outlet, except by climbing up an indescribably steep mountain. Part of the way we had to crawl on hands and feet; sometimes we had to take the baggage and saddles and the horses and drag them up the mountain (for the horses were in danger of falling down backward– as we once had an experience), and sometimes we had to pull the horses up while they trembled and quivered like leaves.” While Native American tribes, most notably the Cherokee and Catawba, had lived and fought over this rugged land for many years, there were few settlers living in the area until the mid 18th century. But, as the Native Americans were pushed west and began migrating to other parts of North Carolina or to other states, the Appalachian region began to attract small groups of immigrants, mostly people of Scottish or Irish descent. These immigrants realized what Bishop Spangenburg eventually noted once he reached the summit of the mountain, where Blowing Rock is today: “…we have found an enchanting place, rich in potential for farming, logging and hunting. There is suitable land for raising wheat, corn, oats, barley and hemp, and excellent opportunities for milling and collecting building materials.” In the early part of the nineteenth century, the Blowing Rock area was made up of family farms and was characterized by subsistence living, cattle and hog driving, and as a source for good lumber. Most of the visitors to the area were personal guests or relatives of those already living in the village, but soon the first seasonal tourists began to trickle in. These visitors either camped in the area or stayed with local families in their homes. During the Civil War, Blowing Rock served as a haven for families who could afford to send their loved ones out of harm’s way. It also served as a stopping place for people seeking to join the Northern Army, or people avoiding the wrath of the Confederate Home Guard. While there were some skirmishes in western North Carolina, it was General Stoneman’s raid through Blowing Rock in 1864 which caused the most direct damage to the village. 4 In the antebellum period, as summer tourism rebounded, small boarding houses like the Hayes or Martin Houses were built on Main Street. Chetola– then called the Silverlake resort– was first conceived and constructed as a boarding house. And as more visitors flocked to the area, more space was needed to accommodate them. The last two decades of the nineteenth century saw construction of beautiful Victorian hotels such as the Watauga, Green Park Inn and the Blowing Rock, all before the turn of the century. On March 11, 1889, a group of influential citizens asked the North Carolina General Assembly to award a charter to the village of Blowing Rock. It was granted, and the town became formally incorporated. After the turn of the century, summer and fall tourism continued to rise in popularity, and was ultimately preserved for future generations in 1911, when a large section of forests, watersheds, and river headwaters in the East became protected federal property through the Weeks Act. This led to the establishment and restoration of the Pisgah National Forest, which now stretches across a significant part of Blowing Rock. The beautiful mountain scenery continued to attract admirers. Very wealthy people such as artist Elliot Daingerfield and textile magnate Moses H. Cone built their summer estates in the area, and this influx of prosperous immigration led to the opening of the grand Mayview Manor hotel in 1922. Yet when tourism revenue was at its lowest point during the Great Depression and World War II, Appalachian families secured jobs doing work for the CCC. A small crew in Blowing Rock was tasked to improve logging trails near Glen Burney Falls, while a larger group participated in road construction, helping to build sections of what is now the Blue Ridge Parkway. Following the post-war boom of the 1950s, Blowing Rock’s tourist economy began to change. Appalachian Ski Mountain, the first ski resort in the South, opened in 1962. Their snowy slopes gave Blowing Rock and the High Country its first taste of winter tourism, and the industry has garnered regional, national, and international renown ever since. That influence, coupled with improved transportation and a surge of modern conveniences, turned Blowing Rock from a summer resort town into a full service, year-round destination. Today, the town continues to draw more and more visitors, thanks to continued highway improvements, increased communications, and the incredible growth of the High Country area. At heart, however, Blowing Rock still enchants visitors as a peaceful village whose natural beauty and Norman Rockwell charm are unparalleled. 5 Blowing Rock Recreation Step out into the sunshine and draw a deep breath of cool, refreshing mountain air. Within town limits, visitors may walk, run, or bike around Blowing Rock with relative ease. Families with small children might enjoy visiting Robbins Pool in the summertime, playing catch at Davant Field, or spending time on the playground and the tennis and basketball courts in Memorial Park. For those folks who would like to experience more of the town’s natural beauty at its best, we offer these suggestions: Glen Burney Trail The Glen Burney trail descends about 800 feet below Main Street Blowing Rock and showcases two spectacular waterfalls above the John’s River Gorge: Glen Burney and Glen Mary Falls. In years past, this trail was likely used by Archaec Indians, but by the turn of the 20th century, it was used by logging camps. During the Depression, the CCC hired a crew to improve the trail throughout the Globe Valley. The portion used to access the falls is now the only remaining part of the trail in good condition. Visitors may walk to the Cascades, which is just under one mile from the entrance at Annie Cannon Park, or to the Glen Burney Falls (1.2 miles) or to Glen Mary Falls (1.6 miles.) Please take caution when walking this trail, as it is very steep and the rocks near the water can be extremely slick. 6 Moses H. Cone Park In the mid-1890s, textile magnate Moses H. Cone, known as the “Denim King,” came to Blowing Rock with his wife Bertha to design and build his grand summer home. The resulting estate, Flat Top Manor, spanned 3,516 acres and included both Flat Top Mountain and the nearby Rich Mountain. Today, the manor is the home of the Parkway Craft Center and a Park Service information desk. It is open daily from March 15 through November 30. One of the best parts of the estate is its 25 miles of carriage roads, now turned into walking trails. From the manor, visitors may go to the Cone cemetery, nearly a mile from the house, or continue two miles to the Flat Top fire tower, which offers a breathtaking view of the High Country area. Visitors may also walk down to Bass Lake and explore the Maze featuring the old apple barn, whose bounty was provided by the 32,000 apple trees planted in the estate’s orchard. Most of these trails feature a lush landscape of rhododendron, mountain laurel, white pines, or sugar maples alongside the designated path, in addition to other species of trees, wildflowers and woodland plants. They are perfect for large groups and families, and are one of Blowing Rock’s best features. (Please note: Bicycles are not permitted on Parkway trails. Dogs and other pets must be leashed. Horses are permitted, though designated parking for horse trailers varies for each location.) Julian Price Memorial Park In 1946, the family of Julian Price donated 4,200 acres of land to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Price originally purchased this land as a recreation spot for his many insurance employees, but came to value its natural beauty so highly that after his death, his heirs wanted to share the land with others. Families with young children will enjoy the main park area, which features wide green fields, creekside views, and scenic picnic areas with wooden tables and charcoal grills. Visitors wishing to hike within the park have their pick of scenic trails. The first, Green Knob, is a steady 2.3 mile climb which loops through pasture and woods and offers a distant view of Price Lake as well as Calloway Peak. It starts at Parkway milepost 295.9, in the Sim’s Pond Parking area. Boone Fork Trail, a moderate to strenuous 5.5 mile loop, can be accessed by crossing the wooden footbridge at milepost 296.4, in the Price Park picnic area. Here, visitors should plan for at least three hours of daylight walking time, as the trail winds through meadows, woods, and rock outcroppings, just past Boone Fork Creek. Boone Fork Trail also runs jointly with the North Carolina Mountains-to-Sea Trail for almost half its length. Signs with white blazes will mark the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, as well as entry and exit points for that portion of the trail. Price Lake Trail is accessible from two places: Parkway milepost 296.7 (the Price Lake Overlook) or milepost 297.1 (the Boone Fork Overlook.) It is an easy 2.7 mile loop which circles the 47 acre Price Lake. In the summer, this is the prime place to observe flocks of ducks or geese. Tanawha Trail is a strenuous 13.5-mile trail which can be accessed at Parkway milepost 297.1 (the Boone Fork Overlook) and ends at milepost 305.5 (Beacon Heights.) It begins in Price Park and runs parallel to the Parkway, ending at the foothills of Grandfather Mountain. Separate maps for this trail are available for intrepid hikers. 7 Blowing Rock Events Listed below is a small selection of events our visitors look forward to each year. Businesses such as the Hayes or Martin Houses were first used as boarding houses in the 1800s. Silverlake House was built on what eventually became the Chetola property. As these boarding houses grew to capacity, larger Victorian hotels sprung up, and their stylish turn-of-the-century elegance is exemplified today by the historic Green Park Inn. Other memorable spots such as the Farm House, Sunshine, and Hob-Nob inns were also popular destinations, while the grand Mayview Manor, which operated from 1922 to 1966, set the standard for luxury resort hotels in the South. Today, whether visitors are looking for historic inns, grand resorts, cottages, cabins, B&Bs or cozy hotels, the village has a wealth of friendly businesses who want to enhance and enrich your stay in the area. 37 Bed & Breakfasts Bob Timberlake Inn at Chetola This magnificent Inn is a tribute to Chetola’s Golden Age of the 1920’s through the 1940’s. Internationally known artist and designer Bob Timberlake has created an enchanting ambience with his finely crafted furnishings and accessories throughout. The Inn features a parlor, historic library, pantry, daily breakfast, wine and cheese and luxurious accommodations. Bob Timberlake says it best... “We couldn’t imagine a more natural partnership. She often took ailing children into her home since no hospital existed at the time. Dr. Warfield was a cousin to Wallis Warfield Simpson, Duchess of Windsor. • The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, which began in 1923, is the oldest continuously running horse show in the country. While many sporting events were suspended during the war years, the Horse Show continued. • Renowned artist Elliott Daingerfield discovered Blowing Rock and began to summer here. Before he built his first home, he stayed at The Fair View House operated by Mrs. Brady, near the Blowing Rock Hotel. Here he offered art classes to the summer population until he built his first home/studio across from the Episcopal Church. • The Martin House, constructed in 1870, has been a boarding house, a private residence, and retail shops through the years. At one time it boasted fourteen bedrooms and four living rooms. 53 Join Us! Since the 1800s the region has experienced a continued growth pattern; however, during the past 20 years, interest by second home owners and permanent home dwellers has swelled to unprecedented levels. That interest has done two things to the lifestyle of the Blowing Rock area and those who manage the purchase and sale of property. It prompted the concept of resort neighborhoods and multi-family dwellings which accommodated those who found homes and property in town very scarce. This alone has seen Blowing Rock evolve from a resort village, primarily populated by people who live and work within the city limits, to a regional village with numerous developments surrounding the town in every direction. 69 Construction Products & Services continued Construction Products & Services Barnette Builders, LLC Providing unique and breathtaking homes that are as environmentally friendly as they are beautiful.
