The Rockport Customs Facility was built in 1934 and officially ceased operating as a point-of-entry to Canada two years ago. It is the 3rd building used for this purpose in the village since 1862. The first building was nearby and hosted a dance hall on the top floor. ROCKPORT Church of the Redeemer (c.1896) 2 Front Street Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm Built in 1896, this historic small wooden church was most likely designed by its community’s boat builders. Its varnished walls and ceiling consist of Georgia Pine tongue and groove and the supports resemble the inside of an old river boat. St. Brendan’s Catholic Church (c.1981) 51 Riverview Drive Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 12pm - 4pm Overlooking the St. Lawrence, the church, named after a 6th century monk and patron saint of seafaring people, features 19th century architectural details, and striking stained glass windows. Settlers Trek 2016 is a committee of the Athens Lions Club who are re-creating the settlers’ trek May 15-20 with an overnight stop in Athens. Other exhibits will also be on display in the museum for Doors Open. Johnston This congregation was founded in 1811 by Rev. William Smart, an itinerant preacher who spread the gospel on horseback, carrying his bible in his saddlebags. This impressive stone structure has three landmark spires and beautiful stained glass windows. Tour guides will be on hand to welcome everyone and an organist will demonstrate the use of the organ. The facility was modelled after a 16th century Surrey style home. It was first conceived by Senator Fulford in 1902. The building was built in 1915 and opened as a home for the aged in 1917. It was converted into a private boarding school in 2002. This magnificent Edwardian mansion evokes the opulent lifestyle of Canada’s industrial and political elite at the turn of the last century. Guides are on hand throughout the house to share family history with you, and tours of our collections storage area will be available. A pop-up exhibition will highlight the history of the pharmaceutical industry, focusing on patent medicines and advertising. St. John’s United Church (c.1870s) 32 Park Street 613-345-5824 /stjohnbrockville.wordpress.com Saturday: 9am - 4pm / Sunday: closed Running the distance of approximately 525m, the Brockville Railway Tunnel, Canada’s 1st railway tunnel, was built between the years 1854 and 1860 to allow the fledging Brockville and Ottawa Railway to connect the Brockville industrial waterfront area to the outlying areas lying between the St Lawrence and Ottawa rivers. Today, the Brockville Railway Tunnel Committee is preparing to open the tunnel in its entirety to the public in the summer of 2017 for Canada’s 150th anniversary. St. John’s United Church celebrated its 180th anniversary of worship in Brockville in October, 2015. During Doors Open it will welcome visitors for tours and music. A Plant, Flower, Bake, and Indoor garage sale will take place from 8am – 12pm. You are welcome to visit the “friendly” church on King St. The Brockville Rifles Armouries (c.1900) Wall Street United Church (c.1860) 144 King Street East Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: closed Architect: Mr. David Ewart Brockville and area has had a military presence since the end of the American revolution. The 41st Brockville Battalion of Rifles was raised as a result of the Fenian threats to Canada in 1866 and 1871. In 1900 the cornerstone was laid for new armouries which was to be the home of the Regiment. The installation was officially opened in 1902 with great pomp and circumstance. Since that time the Brockville Rifles has been part of the social fabric of the city whose name they carry on their regimental title. 2016 will mark the 150th Anniversary of this proud regiment. First Baptist Church (c.1878) 5 Pine Street 613-342-9556 / firstbaptistbrockville.ca Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: closed Architect: James P. Johnston Circa 1878, one of the original four Protestant churches in Brockville’s Court House Square. The architect, James P. Johnston of Ogdensburg N.Y., designed many civil, ecclesiastic, and state buildings, including some in New York City. Its three stained glass windows are massive for the size of the building, and are beautiful viewed from inside or out. The Church’s collection of antique bibles will be on display. Also, if you arrive at 10:00 am on Saturday morning, our musical director, Janice McIntyre, will be playing the Casavant Freres 1200-pipe organ installed in 1910, and holding choir practice. 5 Wall Street 613-342-5401 /1.wallstreetchurch.com Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: closed This large and dominant structure standing at the north-east corner of Court House Square is the result of blending six major construction stages dating from 1830. The most prominent being the 1896 addition of the present-day sanctuary. This sanctuary has high vaulted ceilings supported by columns and is quite spectacular. It houses a large pipe organ. DELTA The Old Stone Mill (c.1810) 46 King Street 613-928-2584 / www.deltamill.org Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm Architect: Jones and Schofield This impressive Georgian building is Canada’s earliest surviving stone gristmill designated a national Historic site - a fine example of early milling technology. Milling demonstration 1 P.M. Saturday; flour and bread available. On site, visit the blacksmith and then the Old Town Hall to purchase a Ploughman’s Lunch and refreshments. ELGIN Red Brick School (Elgin and Area Heritage Society) (c. 1887) Halladay Street 613-272-2662 Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm This 1887 building, reflecting late Victorian design, shows the Ontario government’s wish to improve education by constructing better schools, including larger windows. Facing demolition, the school, saved/restored by the Elgin and Area Heritage Society, houses a c.1915 classroom,‘living history experience’, for area schools and a larger multifunction room. LYN Burnbrae Farms Ltd. In the 1800’s Lyn, with its railroad and waterway systems, was the major mill town in Upper Canada. Watch artisans at work. Refreshments. The Green Gecko LYNDHURST 436 Lyndhurst Road 613-928-1196 / www.greengecko.ca Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 12pm - 4pm Now run as a unique gift shop featuring artisan work from locals and abroad, this building was constructed by Henry Green in the 1850’s with a brick extension added in the 1870’s. It showcases an original gingerbread twostorey porch, interior woodwork and decorative stair banister untouched by modern paint. Long Point School House (c.1862) 3410 County Road 3 613-387-3145 Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm The Long Point School House opened in 1862. It closed in 1960. In 2003 it was purchased by Denis and Margaret Brennan. An addition was added to the back and the school house was restored to its pre-1910 state. Local artist Michael O’Connor will be showing his paintings. St. Luke’s Anglican Church and Camp Hyanto (c.1882) 459 Lyndhurst Road, 613-507-3311 / stlukeslyndhurst.weebly.com / hopefilled.ca Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm Architect: Andrew Dillon St. Luke’s Anglican Church and Ministry Centre is the spiritual and worship centre for the Anglican Parish of Leeds Rear. The brick church, built in 1882, features the original spire and stained glass windows. The Ministry Centre, formerly the parish rectory, features the original oval windows and wooden staircase. MAITLAND Homewood Museum (c.1799) 1372 Highway 2 613-348-1246 Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm Architect: Louis Brière One of Ontario’s oldest residences, Homewood was commissioned by Loyalist Dr. Solomon Jones, a surgeon in the militia. Come and learn about the practice of medicine in the 19th century: find out what the four humours are, see surgical instruments from the era, and squirm as you hear about common surgical practices. Guides and volunteers are on hand to show you the house. Maplehurst, Manor and Carriage House (c. 1829) 1258 County Road 2 613-348-1829 / www.maplehurst.ca Saturday: 10am - 2pm / Sunday: 10am - 2pm Maplehurst is a magnificent Georgian Style Manor overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence River. Completed in 1829 by an English Lord, Maplehurst is considered one of Brockville’s premier properties, offering guests a lovely B&B or wedding and event setting in the renowned charm of the 1000 Islands area. Will be offering a tea/light lunch from 10:30 to 1:30, reservations recommended. MALLORYTOWN Chillane Gardens (c.1847) 10 Junetown Road 613-923-5799 Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm Architect: James Herbison A formal rose garden, a large English style perennial bed and a geometric herb garden surround a 1847 stone house and several reproduction outbuildings. Hundreds of Hostas boarder paths that wind through a forest of native and specimen trees. The garden also contains many unique pieces of art. Mallory Coach House (c.1853) 1523 County Road 2 www.mallorytown.ca Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: 10am - 4pm This two-storey fieldstone house sits on an acre of land with beautiful gardens and gazebo. It was used as a farmhouse, a doctor’s office and a tavern/hotel. Purchased by the township in 2005, it was renovated for use to display local artifacts, including a history of Canada’s 1st Glassworks in Mallorytown. NEW: see our new display about the early Indigenous People, as well as other displays on the Israel Mallory family, and local schools and lodges, etc. Springfield House and LTI Archives (c. 1871) 1365 County Road 2 613-659-3800 / www.ltipl.net Saturday: 10am - 4pm / Sunday: closed Springfield House, one of several coach stops along the King’s Highway, was built in 1871 beside a new township hall in expectation of having a built-in clientele. During Doors Open, enjoy refreshments in our Victorian Parlour and join in the festivities of the Escott Spring Thing, our annual community event. The Leeds and the Thousand Islands Public Library operates here and will be holding their annual booksale and be sure to visit the Leeds and the Thousand Islands Archives at this location too. Explore the historic fort, an 1812-era gunboat wreck and a new exhibit in the Visitor Centre.
