SOLEIL SYSTEM
The Metal Technology Aluminium Brise Soleil System offers a range of Brise Soleil
that can be used on its own or integrated within the Metal Technology Curtain
Walling Systems.
Introduction
Materials
Installation
The system is designed to accommodate
either vertical or horizontal applications.
The basic suite has 150mm and 200mm
blades to allow the Brise Soleil to suit
most architectural requirements. They
can be fitted either directly onto the
structure or onto Metal Technology 28mm
System 17 curtain walling. The system
offers a choice of 150mm or 200mm
blades.
The aluminium profiles are extruded from
aluminum alloy 6060T6, T5 or T4
complying with the recommendations of
BS EN 12020-2 / BS EN 755-Parts 1 to 9.
Detailed installation instructions are
provided which should be strictly followed.
Finishes
For the cantilevered Brise Soleil system,
loading graphs are provided in this manual,
which should be strictly followed.
Various other profiles can be designed
and incorporated allowing architects to
achieve flexible designs.
As with all Metal Technology Systems,
the Aluminium Brise Soleil System is
manufactured to exacting standards
enabling economy to be combined with
strength to give many years of trouble
free operation.
Scope
This specification defines materials,
construction, finishes and size limits for
the Aluminium Brise Soleil System.
Size Limits
The range of sections can be provided in
either of the following ranges of finishes:
1. Anodised to BS 1615 or BS 3987
2. Powder organic coated to BS 6496 or BS
EN 12206-1
Construction
The Brise Soleil blade is square cut and
fixed securely to the outriggers/upriggers
with stainless steel screws.
Brackets are pre-fixed to the curtain
walling or building structure before the
Brise Soleil arrays are hooked onto
pre-positioned pins on the fixing brackets.
The Brise Soleil is then securely bolted into
position.
For the propped and vertical Brise Soleil,
the main limit on the design will be the
blade length. Graphs are provided for the
design of these which should be followed.
Development
Our policy is to continually research
the market for new and improved products.
We must therefore retain the right to
amend specifications without prior notice.
It is recognised at Metal Technology that in
some instances special sections may be
required for particular projects. When this
occurs it may be possible to produce
bespoke sections subject to there being
sufficient quantity and adequate time.
Standard fixing brackets make the
application of Brise Soleil a simple and
trouble free operation.

ALUMINIUM BRISE
SOLEIL SYSTEM
System 22 Brise Soleil is designed for horizontal or vertical applications. The system has been designed to
be wall mounted or used in conjunction with System 17 curtain walling. The standard curtain walling
brackets are designed to be used with 28mm glazing and CW09 cover caps only. They may also be used in
conjunction with System 17 Latitude and SP silicone pointed applications where a wider variety of unit
thicknesses may be accommodated. HR50121 push-in gasket is not suitable for use with brise soleil
brackets.
In a curtain walling applications fabricators must ensure the centre line of brackets are positioned a
minimum distance from the top of the mullions and expansion joints, as follows:
BS69 bracket - 200mm
BS70 bracket - 250mm
BS71 bracket - 250mm
BS57 bracket - 105mm
The standard brise soleil system is not designed for use in façetted applications. However, where façets are
required bespoke solutions may be possible on a project-by-project basis.
The design of the brise soleil system takes into consideration the structural capabilities of the blades, the
brackets, the outriggers/upriggers, their fixings, and their attachment to the curtain walling mullion. It
must be noted however that the brise soleil will impose loads onto the curtain walling mullion and its
fixings to the building structure, which must be determined by a structural engineer and catered for when
selecting the appropriate curtain walling profiles and structural fixings.

Vertical Brise Soleil
To facilitate ease of maintenance, vertical panel configurations have been designed so that any
individual panel in a vertical array can be removed without disturbing the adjacent panels.
Where a vertical brise soleil uprigger is secured using two brackets which straddle an expansion joint,
careful consideration must be given to the movement of the curtain walling relative to the brise soleil.
The closest distance from the glass to the blade is set at 82mm for the vertical system. Where greater
clearance is required additional bespoke components will be necessary. Refer to Metal Technology's
Technical Department for guidance.
The vertical separation of the blades is set to standard fixed dimensions for the 150mm and 200mm
options. Alternative spacings may be provided on request for bespoke applications.

Replace BS57 upper prop curtain walling bracket with BS89 upper prop "T" bracket
Omit BS80 bracket pins, 7201 screws and BS51/BS52/BS53 stitch plates.
It is possible to support a curtain walling fixed horizontal brise soleil panel using wall mounted upper
prop brackets. However, as the surface of the wall is unlikely to be flush with the curtain walling,
fabricators are advised to set out the application to determine the prop length requirements on a
project-by-project basis.
When securing a wall mounted brise soleil bracket or wall mounted prop bracket directly to the building
structure the fabricator must consult a specialist anchor supplier and/or structural engineer to
determine the most suitable fixing method. Care must be taken to ensure that the applicable building
structure is capable of accommodating the loads imposed on it by the brise soleil assembly. Final
approval for the brise soleil fixing to structure should be obtained from the structural engineer
responsible for the building.

SOLEIL SYSTEM
2. Prep cut length of HR5064 foil-backed sealant tape with single central slit to
accommodate projecting nose of applicable bracket.
3. Apply cut length of HR5064 foil-backed sealant tape over glass and nose of bracket. (If using HR5064
throughout the curtain walling screen, simply slit tape as required.)
4. Apply pressure plate, passing brise soleil bracket through pre-prepped slot, in accordance with System
17 "Glazing Procedure", ensuring standard pressure plate fixings do not interfere with brise soleil
brackets.
5. Seal between projecting nose of brise soleil bracket and slot in pressure plate. Seal superfluous
pre-punched pressure plate holes as required.
6. Apply brise soleil stitch plate and centralise over brise soleil bracket, fixing into nose of curtain walling
mullion using 7201 stitch plate screws. Torque brise soleil stitch plate fixings to 3.5Nm.
7. Snap-fit CW09 cover cap into place passing brise soleil bracket through pre-prepped slot in cover cap.
8. Seal between projecting nose of brise soleil bracket and slot in cover cap.

Installation/Assembly Procedure
Cantilevered Curtain Walling Applications

1.
Secure brise soleil brackets to curtain wall mullion using 4 x BS80 bracket pins, ALUMINIUM BRISE
ensuring pins are centred in mullion nose. Bracket must be correctly

orientated, with the threaded holes located as shown. Pins may be factory
fitted, or fitted on site prior to installation, at the fabricators discretion.
2. Install curtain walling grid in accordance with the recommendations of the System 17 curtain walling
manual.
3. Check the line and level of the brise soleil brackets to ensure they run through at the correct height
relative to the setting out datum. Adjust grid accordingly if required.
4. For silicone pointed mullions continue the curtain walling installation in accordance with the System
17 Latitude/SP manuals, up to and including gaskets and glazing. Continue silicone pointing between
glass units over brise soleil brackets and both sides of projecting nose. HR50121 push-in gasket is
not suitable for use with brise soleil brackets.
5. For pressure plate and cover cap applications push thermal isolator into nose of mullion, butting up
against bracket as indicated.
a. Continue the curtain walling installation in accordance with the System 17 manual, up to and
including gaskets, glazing and pressure plates ensuring that the brise soleil bracket protrudes
through the pre-prepped slot in the pressure plate. Ensure that standard pressure plate fixings
adjacent to brise soleil brackets are within 300mm of the brise soleil stitch plate fixings.
b. Using a low-modulus silicone sealant, fill and seal all voids between the projecting nose of the
brise soleil brackets and the slots in the pressure plate.
c. Position brise soleil stitch plates centrally over projecting nose of brise soleil brackets. See also
"Brise Soleil Stitch Plate Application" sheet.
d. Apply CW09 cover caps to curtain wall screen ensuring nose of brise soleil bracket protrudes through
pre-prepped slot in cover cap, and seal.
6. Fit the 2 No BS77 grub screws into the threaded holes in the brise soleil bracket (as shown in
Diagram 1) ensuring that the screw is projecting equally on each side.
7. Locate brise soleil panel between adjacent brise soleil brackets and lower into position locating lower
slots over lower grub screws as shown (Diagram 2). Slide brise soleil panel towards screen (Diagram
3), locating upper slot over upper grub screw (Diagram 4). Brise soleil panel is now temporarily held
in position.
8. Repeat procedure with adjacent panel
9. Secure adjacent panels by inserting 2 x BS47 bracket fixing bolts through clear holes in outriggers
and brise soleil bracket, and fix with BS48 nyloc nuts (Diagram 5). Brise soleil panels must not be left
unattended without bolting permanently into position.
10. Repeat procedure along length of brise soleil screen.
11. Centre BS60 outrigger packer between adjacent outriggers at pre-drilled hole behind D section and
secure with BS47 bracket fixing bolt and BS48 nyloc nut.
12. Check line and level of brise soleil panels and finally tighten all BS47 / BS48 fixings.

1. Follow step 1 of "Cantilevered Curtain Walling Applications" instructions.
2. Secure BS57 upper prop curtain walling brackets to curtain walling mullion using 4 x BS80 bracket pins,
ensuring pins are centred in mullion nose. Pins may be factory fitted or fitted on site prior to installation
at the fabricators discretion.
3. Follow steps 2 to 10 inclusive of "Cantilevered Curtain Walling Applications".
4. Locate BS128 lower prop outrigger brackets between adjacent outriggers using 2 x BS47 bracket fixing
bolts through 2 x 11mm diameter holes in outriggers, and secure using BS48 nyloc nuts. See also
"Outrigger Prep for Lower Prop Bracket" sheet.
5. Adjust the level of the brise soleil panels and tighten the BS47 and BS48 fixings at the BS70/BS71 brise
soleil curtain walling brackets.
6. Join BS112 lower prop to correct upper prop using BS85 threaded adjustment bar, ensuring threaded
bar is located equally into both prop components leaving an adjustment gap of 40mm.

and BS48 nyloc nut.

Cantilevered Wall Mounted Applications
1. Establish setting out position of wall mounted brise soleil brackets on building structure. Care must be
taken to accurately space and level all brackets, as adjustment after fixing may not be possible.
2. Secure wall-mounted T brackets (BS87 or BS88) to building structure using suitable anchor fixings.
Fabricator must consult a specialist anchor supplier and/or structural engineer to determine the most
suitable fixing method. Care must be taken to ensure that the applicable building structure is capable
of accommodating the loads imposed on it by the brise soleil assembly. Final approval for the brise
soleil fixing to the structure should be obtained from the structural engineer responsible for the
building.
3. Follow steps 6 to 12 inclusive of "Cantilevered Curtain Walling Applications" instructions.
Propped Wall Mounted Applications
1. Repeat steps 1 and 2 of the "Cantilevered Wall Mounted Applications" for the BS87/BS88, and the
BS89 upper prop T bracket.
2. Follow steps 6 to 10 inclusive of "Cantilevered Curtain Walling Applications" instructions.
3. Locate BS128 lower prop outrigger brackets between adjacent outriggers using BS47 bracket fixing
bolts through 2 x 11mm diameter holes in outriggers and secure using BS48 nyloc nuts. See also
"Outrigger Prep for Lower Prop Bracket" sheet.
4. Adjust level of brise soleil panels and tighten BS47 and BS48 fixings at BS87/BS88 wall mounted T
brackets.
5. Join BS112 lower prop to correct upper prop using BS85 threaded adjustment bar, ensuring threaded
bar is located equally into both prop components leaving an adjustment gap of 60mm.
6. Locate upper prop over BS89 upper prop T bracket and secure with BS45 prop fixing bolt and BS48
nyloc nut.
7. Locate BS112 lower prop over BS128 lower prop outrigger bracket using BS85 threaded adjustment
bar, if required, to adjust length of prop assembly to suit, (ensure thread engagement of BS85
threaded adjustment bar into upper/lower prop components is minimum 20mm) and secure with BS45
prop fixing bolt and BS48 nyloc nut.
8. Check line and level of brise soleil panels and finally tighten all BS45, BS47 and BS48 fixings.
Wall Mounted Prop with Curtain Walling Brise Soleil
It is possible to support a curtain walling fixed brise soleil panel using wall mounted upper prop brackets
following the "Propped Wall Mounted" details above. However, as the surface of the wall is unlikely to be
flush with the curtain walling, fabricators are advised to set out the application to determine the prop
length requirements on a project-by-project basis.

7. Locate brise soleil panel between adjacent brise soleil brackets, and lower into position hooking slot
over grub screw as shown (Diagram 4).
8. Temporarily hold in position by inserting BS47 bracket fixing bolts through the dead holes of
upriggers and brackets. When installing a horizontal row of panels ensure fixing bolts do not project
beyond brackets hindering installation of adjacent panel. Once adjacent panel has been located
ensure BS47 bolt is then pushed fully through to secure both panels.
9. Secure panels in position with BS48 nyloc nuts (Diagram 5). Brise soleil panels must not be left
unattended without bolting permanently into position.
10. Repeat procedure along length of brise soleil screen.
11. Check line and level of brise soleil panels and finally tighten all BS47 / BS48 fixings.

Structural Chart for Brise Soleil

The following chart is for guidance purposes and may be used to estimate the
structural capabilities of the System 22 Brise Soleil blades in both horizontal and vertical applications. It
must be noted however that the brise soleil will impose loads on the curtain walling mullion and its fixings
to the building structure, which must be determined by a structural engineer and catered for when
selecting the appropriate curtain walling profiles and structural fixings. All structural calculations must be
checked and confirmed by a structural engineer.
Brise soleil blade assessment procedure:
1. Determine "Site wind load" in accordance with BS 6399.
2. Establish optimum brise soleil bracket centres. For curtain walling applications these may be
determined by the mullion centres. Where practical, it may be beneficial to span over multiple mullion
centres. i.e. - Where a curtain walling grid is at 1 metre centres it may be possible to fix brise soleil
brackets at 3 metre centres. This will however be subject to the spanning capabilities of the blade.
3. Select the appropriate brise soleil blade using the following chart: Using the desired brise soleil bracket
fixing centres, establish the blade length. The intersection of the "Blade length" with the "Site wind
load" must fall below the plotted curve of the permissible blade(s). i.e. - Where the intersection falls
above a curve, conditions exceed the structural capabilities of that blade/blades. In such circumstances,
reduce bracket fixing centres/blade length, and re-assess using chart.

The following charts are for guidance purposes and may be used to estimate the structural capabilities of
cantilevered horizontal brise soleil manufactured using the standard Metal Technology brise soleil
components, fabricated and installed in accordance with the recommendations and details set out in the
System 22 Brise Soleil manual. The design of the brise soleil system takes into consideration the
structural capabilities of the blades, the brackets, the outriggers/upriggers, their fixings, and their
attachment to the curtain walling mullion. The following charts do not take into consideration the effect
the Brise Soleil has on the curtain walling mullions, or the fixings required to secure the wall-mounted
T-brackets to the structure, which must be determined by a structural engineer. All structural calculations
must be checked and confirmed by a qualified structural engineer.
Cantilevered brise soleil assessment procedure:
1. Determine "Site wind load" in accordance with BS 6399.
2. Establish the brise soleil "span" i.e. - From centre line of fixing bracket to centre line of fixing bracket.
For curtain walling applications this is determined by the mullion centres. Where practical it may be
beneficial to span over multiple mullion centres. i.e. - Where a curtain walling grid is at 1 metre
centres it may be possible to fix the brise soleil brackets at 3 metre centres, resulting in a 3 metre
span.
3. Determine desired projection of brise soleil and using the "Component Identification" sheet select
appropriate outrigger to suit.
4. Using the following charts read horizontally from the "Site wind load" axis and vertically from the
"Cantilevered projection" axis and provided the intersection is below the applicable span curve, the
brise soleil design is satisfactory. i.e. - where the intersection falls above the applicable span curve,
conditions exceed the structural capabilities of the brise soleil assembly. In such circumstances
re-assess using a larger blade if possible, or reduce the bracket fixing centres/span, and/or the desired
projection/outrigger. Alternatively the brise soleil may be propped.
