1 4 MAN ENTERS THE COSMOS ADLER PLANETARIUM AND ASTRONOMY MUSEUM Adler was the first public planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. Today, the planetarium features many permanent exhibits as well as sky shows presented in the newly renovated Definiti Space Theater, which provides virtual reality tours through space. NICOLAUS COPERNICUS MONUMENT This monument, installed in 1973, commemorates the 500th birthday of Copernicus, the Father of Modern Astronomy. It is a replica of an early nineteenth century sculpture that once sat in front of the Polish Academy of Sciences. MUSEUM CAMPUS 3 5 1 3 2 NORTHERLY ISLAND VISITOR CENTER The former airport terminal today offers nature programs and can be rented for parties and other special events. The center houses the Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation facility. The view of the city skyline and Lake Michigan makes a perfect backdrop. 4 5 JOHN G. SHEDD AQUARIUM S. Originally installed in Humboldt Park, the statue, sculpted by Kasimir Chodzinski, was moved to Burnham Park in 1978. Originally part of a temporary exhibition in Grant Park, these figures were so Source: Chicago Park District popular they were moved to Northerly Island in 2006. Artist Dessa Kirk created the figures from parts of old Cadillacs. 9 7 6 Completed in 1929, Shedd became the first inland aquarium with a permanent salt-water collection. Today Shedd is Chicago’s premier cultural attraction, housing more than 32,000 marine animals from the world’s fresh and salt waters. Source: Chicago Park District Charter One Pavilion, built in 2005, is a state-ofthe art, 7,500-seat venue, hosting concerts and family matinee events. The view of the Chicago skyline from the Pavilion is outstanding. 12th STREET BEACH Source: Chicago Park District Adler Planetarium 6 In 1927, women’s groups suggested a public beach at this location, and park commissioners agreed. The Chicago Park District replaced the dilapidated beach house with a new facility in the late 1990s. SPIRAL GALAXY The 14-foot-tall Spiral Galaxy was installed south of Adler Planetarium in 2005 in celebration of the Adler’s 75th anniversary. Created by John David Mooney in 1994, the piece was inspired by research on Galileo’s drawings and early images of our closest galaxies. 8 Sixty stone pieces, each from a different quarry, were selected to represent the diverse peoples of the Americas. Creators Denise Milan and Ary Perez also intended the stones to evoke ancient monuments. Arranged in the shape of a spiral galaxy, the stones are oriented to the points of the compass so that they can be used to follow the progression of the seasons. This unique feature was installed here in 2000. This sundial, installed near the planetarium in 1980, was created by British sculptor Henry Moore. 2 AMERICA’S COURTYARD Burnham Harbor 11 This memorial is dedicated to the families of the officers of the Chicago Police Department who have fallen in the line of duty. One monument poignantly reads in part, “It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.” 12 CHILDREN’S GARDEN Enter this hidden garden by crawling through “Cultural Earth” and attempt to solve the riddle of the 25 world cities shown on the spiraling pathway and “Geography Earth.” More play options relate to the three nearby museums. Landscape architect Peter Lindsay Schaudt designed this garden. 13 SOLDIER FIELD/TRIBUTE TO FREEDOM Designed by Chicago architects Holabird and Roche in 1919, Soldier Field was dedicated to soldiers of World War I and completed in 1926. A major 2003 renovation, designed by architects Wood and Zapata, included a large glassy addition and added 17 acres. At Soldier Field’s north entrance, visitors are greeted by a 15-foot tall bas-relief monument designed by artists Anna Koh Varilla and Jeffrey Hanson Varilla. The monument depicts men and women of the Armed Services and their families relaxing along Chicago’s lakefront with the Chicago skyline in the background. The figures represent Chicago’s broad ethnic and racial diversity as well as a range of historical periods. POINTS OF INTEREST BURNHAM 14 CHICAGO FIREFIGHTER/PARAMEDIC MEMORIAL This park was dedicated by Mayor Richard M. Daley on September 11, 2002, to pay tribute to firefighters and paramedics who have died in the line of duty as far back as 1857, when the city still had a volunteer fire department. The sculptor of the boots and helmet is a firefighter/ paramedic named John Alaniz. The memorial is sponsored by the Gold Badge Society of families of fallen firefighters and paramedics. 20 31st Street Harbor Source: Chicago Park District ldron S. The museum celebrates the planet’s plants, animals, peoples, and cultures. Dr. FIELD MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY 12 BALBO MONUMENT This monument is the most ancient outdoor artifact in Chicago. Its breccia shaft came from a Roman structure located on the shores of Ostia, Italy, from the time of Julius Caesar. A gift of the Italian government, the monument was dedicated on Italian Day in 1934 at A Century of Progress to commemorate the one-year anniversary of General Balbo’s squadron’s famous 1933 transatlantic flight in amphibious airplanes from Ortobello to Chicago. 15 PA R K 19 16 McCORMICK PLACE ON THE LAKE 17 McCORMICK PLACE NATURE SANCTUARY Located within the park boundaries, the center boasts four levels of facilities, an outdoor waterfall, the Arie Crown Theater, and The Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau. McCormick Place, the nation’s largest convention complex, includes many restaurants among its amenities. The original McCormick Place, built in 1960, was destroyed by fire in 1967 and rebuilt in 1971. Failed efforts to relocate the center outside the park led to the Chicago and Lakefront Protection Ordinance of 1973. This new 6-acre prairie and woodland edge provides habitat for migratory birds. It includes an observation platform, interpretive signs, and trails. The sanctuary is one point along the Lakefront Birding Trail extending from Montrose Point to Calumet Park Beach. 26 Adults, children, animals, and birds can all quench their thirst at this fountain “for man and beast” funded by David Wallach and created by Chicago artists Frederick and Elisabeth Hazeltine Hibbard in the 1930s. The bronze fawn atop the fountain was inspired by a living counterpart at Lincoln Park Zoo. Source: Chicago Park District In 1928, the South Park Commissioners built this water feature for sailing miniature boats. In 2007, the Chicago Park District installed Ecstasy, a bronze abstract sculpture by artist Virginio Ferrari in the center of the circular basin. E. 47 th 23 d ood Blv E.
