The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) is responsible for Italy’s relations with
other countries and international bodies, as well as for the negotiations regarding the drafting of treaties and
agreements, for the protection of italian rights and interests - both private and public - at international level and
for the implementation of national activities abroad. Through Italy’s diplomatic and consular network (around 300
offices including embassies, permanent missions to international organizations, consulates and cultural institutes),
the mfaic also coordinates the activities carried out by other ministries and national bodies with an impact at
international level, while contributing with an overall vision of italian interests abroad. In the economic field, the
MFAIC provides Italian companies with institutional support with local authorities as well as information on the
general context and business opportunities offered by international markets.

The Italian Ministry of Economic Development operates in four main fields: industrial policies, energy, communications
and internationalisation policies. Its activities aim to support the innovation, development and competitiveness of
italian economy at both national and international levels.
Among the activities of the Ministry of Economic Development, the policies for the internationalisation of enterprises
and for the promotion of the italian products abroad are particularly important. Specifically, these policies are
implemented through the following activities: facilitation of trade with third countries (trade facilitation); guidelines and
proposals for the eu’s trade policy; activation of the eu trade defence mechanisms (anti-dumping and anti-subsidy
measures, safeguard clauses); negotiation of multilateral trade agreements and bilateral economic cooperation with
third countries; promotion of new italian investments abroad and policies for attracting new foreign investments in

The Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport identifies the fundamental features of the spatial planning with regard
to infrastructure networks and to the system of cities and metropolitan areas; it is responsible for urban policies,
housing, maritime works and hydraulic infrastructures; it is responsible also for transport policy and road circulation.
In particular, the ministry monitors, controls, and carries out surveillance on planning, funding, construction and
management of infrastructures, electric and hydraulic networks. The Ministry is also responsible for national and
cross-border sections of the trans-european transport networks on the Italian territory.
The Ministry is committed to the development of modal integration between different transport systems and it is
responsible for the government policy for maritime transport and inland waters, including the safety of navigation,
surveillance on ports and the public maritime domain, as well as for civil aviation and air transport, for the movement
of vehicles and rail transport, including the safety of passengers and goods.
The Ministry carries out supervisory functions on the transport management companies, the public concessions
and the program or service contracts.
