welcome
In this issue of Design Style we’ll guide you through the looks of the moment as well as unique
takes on traditional design, to help you create the perfect environment where you and family
can entertain and relax. We’ve also interviewed New Zealand’s leading fabric houses, selecting
key ranges to create this showcase of the latest styles in fabric and window coverings.
There’s no doubt that pattern and prints have been steadily making a comeback in interior
design. Whether you choose a strong, bold print or a subtle floral there will be many options
to choose from. The looks are endless and there are no hard and fast rules; mix stripes with
floral or graphic with botanical pattern, anything goes as long as there’s a colour link.
Following runway fashion trends, colour blocking is increasingly popular in home décor.
Bright vivid colours are blocked together to create visually stimulating interior design.
Sheer curtains add depth and dimension to a window, they’re also incredibly functional.
Use to add subtle privacy or team with a plain fabric background to create a traditional curtain.
With so many masculine options in fabric on offer, a feature on the traditional den or study
seemed appropriate. This is a great room to play with prints set against luxurious suedes and
velvets to make a room any gentleman will feel at home in.
The beach house offers the perfect environment to reuse and reupholster your old furniture in
funky new fabrics. A bach is the perfect place to have fun with the décor.
Changing your décor to suit the season is a growing trend overseas, much like Christmas, homes
are transformed to fit a change in the weather. Surprisingly, a few cushions and throws can really
change the look of your interior, lending a refreshing new feel for the approaching season.

The key to using pattern is choosing something that you instantly love. Whether it is intense or subtle,
pattern will undoubtedly enhance the vibrancy of your room.
Classic floral combinations have lasting impact, Heritage by Charles Parsons is an ideal example
of the longevity of floral designs. Attention grabbing designs like Palm Beach by James Dunlop will
make a definite statement, add a plain backdrop and you’ll have equal parts restful and invigorating.
A colour pop in the pattern will create excitement without being too busy.
Design tip Often curtains are drawn back for most of the day so pattern will border the room rather than
dominate. If you are a little unsure of how to work with pattern, try introducing pattern in cushions and
furnishings such as tie-backs and edging. If you love the pattern, why not go all out and use for curtains
to create a stunning effect.

Sheer
indulgence
Sheer fabrics can be a multi purpose star when decorating your home. Use as curtains or simply to
separate spaces in your home. Sheers can diffuse light, add subtle privacy, or when used with a solid
lining they can transform a conventional curtain with a three dimensional layering effect.
Traditional organza fabric sheers have been available for many years in plain or colour-shot options,
but now a variety of patterning and embossing on sheer fabric is available. Warwick have made a bold
statement with Larissa, featuring a geometric jacquard woven design. Salvadore Mocha by Charles
Parsons shows how effective organic pattern is layered on a neutral base. Darker colour palettes are often
overlooked for sheers but as Pascal Black by Charles Parsons clearly highlights, dark colour in light airy
fabric makes for an elegant combination.

your perfect
all about the personality of colour
Its probably no surprise to you that you tend
to always pick up certain colours over others,
and that you often wear similar styles and
colours in clothes.
The same applies to interior design so it’s important
that you understand what you like and stay true to your
instincts when choosing what you live with in your home.
It’s important you stay true to your personality when
it comes to choosing your interiors, this can be tricky
because you may like something in a store, but could
you actually live with it in your home? Further difficulties
arise when you live with someone who is a different
colour / style personality to you. Here are some tips for
ascertaining where your personality fits on the ‘colour
wheel’ and how your interior design can reflect
you and your family.
Spring These personalities are unique and therefore
they love unique and often quirky pieces. They adore
bright colour, often yellows and limes with clear colour
sharpness. They are drawn to bold pieces of furniture and
pattern in fabric. Spring has an optimistic personality and
loves an indoor outdoor flow to their home.
Summer A Summer personality relishes floral design,
the ‘Laura Ashley look’ of matching floral pattern and
small prints is a perfect fit. In colour they enjoy soft
pastels tempered with bright accessories to sharpen and
modernize the look. They are nostalgic and cherish things
they love. This can be tricky when minimizing décor in
preparation for sale of a home as they are reluctant to
move from their décor style.
Autumn Not surprisingly, earth colours and warm tones fit
with the autumn personality. They like a bit of bling which
helps to modernize a rustic or natural colour palette. Gold,
burnt orange, warm reds and natural greens appeal to this
person. They are close to nature and love natural, textural
fabrics such as hemp, linen and pure cotton.
adding golds and neutral colours to soften. Strong colour
accents on a neutral background appeal to the winter
personality. They are drawn to opposites on the colour
wheel. Winter personalities will often mix bold colours like
purple with lime or teal with orange.
You should absolutely adore the main
structural pieces of a room – the rest will
be easy to match up to these, if they are
true to your natural style
Individual colours themselves can evoke particular moods
or feelings. Red symbolizes passion, flamboyance or a
fiery response, whereas BLUE can be cooling and calming.
Green is secure and natural, whereas too much blue can
flatten your mood.
The wrong shade of yellow can be agitating and this
is worth thinking about when planning a nursery. Yellow
is often used to paint a nursery and if the right shade is
selected it can be soothing. Select the wrong shade and the
opposite is true.
Representing mystery and surprise, Purple is often
associated with travel. PINK is a popular colour for most
people as it signifies happiness and fun, as well as being
a soft and soothing tone.
Colour and design consultants are keen to point out that
whilst you may not think you can live with or wear a
particular colour, it’s all about the tone or strength of a
colour and how it is used in a room. It’s likely that you’ll
find something in a tonal range or shade to suit you.
The most important rule of thumb is to be true to your
gut instinct. If you are finding it too hard to decide
on a colour or fabric, it might not be the one for you.
Conversely if you absolutely loved something initially then
chances are, you will be able to live with it forever.
Winter A winter personality loves contrast. They adore
block colours, vivids and black and white. If you live with
a winter personality you can tone down the contrast by

Does the den or study proudly boast it’s own unique style, or is it a room where the design leftovers
are stored? Warwick have launched some amazing fabrics that create the perfect look for a traditional
mens study. The textures and depth of colour in the London Club range conjure up a sense of the past.
Warwick have also released a range offering a French renaissance look, the Rue De Paris print uses
script and word play on a neutral colour palette. These are all great fabrics for cushions and roman blinds.
Leather and suede in chocolate or charcoal offer a dash of gentlemanly charm with functional durability.

RE-use and reupholster
The bach is a great place to use funky, exuberant design with relish. Geometric patterns are great on
cushions, but why not try giving old furniture new life by recovering in fun fabrics, perfect for the relaxed
beach setting. If it’s a hot summer, fabric blinds are a must for the bedroom, providing coolness on
scorching summer nights, not to mention light control for those lazy morning lie-ins.
If strong pattern does not suit you, a more relaxed, neutral look might be best. Sometimes the simplest
colour schemes are the most effective, traditional whites or neutrals can provide a great backdrop to
the beach house décor. Layering neutrals with different textures along a similar colour palette maintains
interest in soft furnishings.
Design tip Blinds are the perfect way to protect your furnishings from the sun’s damaging rays, especially
in winter when the sun is lower in the sky. Your consultant will be able to give you technical information on
insulation, glare control, privacy, light reflection and the “green” qualities for every type of blind.

colour to create maximum impact
Colour is a great way to add impact, whether on a large scale or a minimal colour pop in
a neutral setting. Similar to the fashion runway, strong competing hues combine to create
drama and excitement.
Vivid brights heighten visual interest and can bestow an element of fun and vitality into your
décor. Black and white provide the perfect backdrop for a burst of colour in bedroom, lounge
or TV room. You’ll need to be assertive and bold to make this design statement, but the
results will be attention grabbing and exhilarating for all who enter the room.
Design tip
Don’t worry about using bold colour and design. If you’re comfortable wearing
a particular colour or pattern style it is very likely you will be comfortable living with that
colour and style too.

Botanical
the beauty of
There is endless design inspiration in our natural surroundings. Our flora and fauna provide colour,
texture and form ideas, the only element to add is your imagination. Nature’s colours can be
enhanced, the designs more structured, but the initial inspiration comes from looking out of the
window and enjoying what nature has to offer.
Exuberant pattern, evoking a touch of William Morris as seen in Charles Parsons Vienna range, has a
place in both a traditional and contemporary setting. Subtle patterns used alongside complementary
stripes, such as the Linneaus range by Warwick add interest and an element of surprise.
Design tip Consider running your drapes floor to ceiling wherever possible. This can give the room
an illusion of more space and height. You can also buy tracks that rebate into the Gib-board ceiling
for a clean uncluttered look. Removing those old built-in pelmets is often not as difficult as it looks
and greatly improves the apparent height in a room.

Tricks and Tips
LINE UP. Linings for curtains and blinds come in numerous fabrics for a range of uses. A light poly-cotton
is a well priced option for a room that doesn’t need much insulation or light control. In contrast, a blackout
lining completely blocks out sunlight, so is a great choice for kids rooms, especially when the clocks go forward!
For cooler rooms extra insulation and noise control can be easily gained by including an inter-lining of bumph or
heavy flannelette. The more layers of fabric between the window and the room, the more pockets of air that are
trapped and the greater the insulation.
WHEN IN ROME. Love a fabric that is more expensive than your budget? Talk to your consultant about modern
heading styles which require less fullness. A roman blind is an excellent way to use less fabric
at the window. Ask your consultant to layer the blinds folds to help protect it from the sun.
REUSE and Recycle. Consider re-upholstering your lounge suite, dining chairs or occasional furniture. Older
pieces often have very good frames that will last a lifetime plus you already know how well they fit into a room
and how comfortable they are.
Break the moUld. Keeping your curtain fabric clean and dust free will help to reduce the likelihood
of mould growing. This is because moulds grow on organic matter such as household dust.
Ask your consultant about co-ordinating upholstered bedheads, tailor-made bedspreads
and cushions to compliment your décor.

all about
Automated blinds make your life easier in an instant, you get the convenience of a fully automated system, with a
stylish minimalist aesthetic.
The ideal way to open and close large areas of blinds, with the touch of a button you can adjust the light, depending
on the time of day, with no unsightly cords and bulky headers. Blinds can be adjusted individually, or as a group,
instantly controlling light, heat and privacy.
child safety One of the key benefits to automation is the removal of the cords, which immediately creates a safer
environment for children.
As an ingenious addition to blind automation, opt to install a sun sensor or timer control. In this way your blinds
will adjust according to the amount of sunlight, helping to control reduce UV exposure to interior furnishings, or set
the timer to close blinds at sundown to control heat. You can choose to control your blinds with a hand held remote
control, opt for a wall mounted switch, or integrate with the latest smart home technology.
