Introduction
What an exciting six months of shows and activities we have for you!
There is plenty of main-stage fun, with the heartwarming stage
adaptation of Grug and The Rainbow (p.6), contemporary circus troupe
Circa’s first foray into making work for children in Carnival of the Animals
(p.12) and a powerful story for young people, The Rabbits (p.14).
For more interactive experiences, The Sleepover invites you to stay a
night on the Playhouse stage (p.9) and live action graphic novel The
Intergalactic Nemesis and its associated workshops are sure to be a hit
with the whole family (p.10 – 11).
To provide families with more opportunities to engage with the arts, our
program includes relaxed, access-friendly and AUSLAN-interpreted
performances, as well as Oddysea (p.11), an immersive, multi-sensory
work designed specifically for children with complex and multiple
disabilities, and their families. More information on p.18.

Chalk About
Direct from Scotland
Originally created by Christine Devaney and Leandro Kees
(Performing Group, DE) and commissioned by Imaginate.
A playful, funny and sometimes moving look at how we see
ourselves and others, featuring dance, chat and one perfect scene
containing everything you could wish for…
Sat 6 & Sun 7 June
11am & 2pm
AUSLAN-interpreted performance
2pm: Sat 6 June
Join Christine and Hendrik on their journey as they ask some BIG
questions about identity and the meaning of life. What makes us
who we are? Is it where we are from? Is it the way we dance? Our
pasts or our futures? And, most importantly, doesn’t everyone like
pizza?
Mouth Open, Story Jump Out
Direct from England
A Battersea Arts Centre production. Conceived and created by
Polarbear, co-commissioned by Southbank Centre.
8-11
Sat 27 & Sun 28 June
1.30pm & 4pm: Sat 27 June
11am & 2pm: Sun 28 June
Polarbear makes things up: stories, jokes, adventures – a master
maker-upper. But where did it all begin? Mouth Open, Story Jump
Out is about the moment that started it all, and how one little
decision set off a chain reaction that changed his life forever.
International assassins, secret codes, dog-eating boa constrictors
and much more, fill the hole left when a father disappears and a
boy discovers a talent for telling tales.
Mouth Open, Story Jump Out is a vivid and absorbing show about
the craft of storytelling by Polarbear, one of the UK’s most exciting
and respected spoken word artists.
“Brave, honest and delightful … full of a rich sense of the joy
of human difference.” The Scotsman
“The audience were thoroughly invested in Polarbear’s tale,
fighting over small details and full of questions at the end.”

Arts Centre Melbourne presents a Windmill Theatre production
Grug and the Rainbow
More stories based on the much-loved picture book character
created by Ted Prior.
Grug began his life as the grassy top of a Burrawang tree.
Fascinated by the world around him and never short of an
adventure, now he’s back by popular demand!
Embarking on his own epic journey to find a rainbow, it always
seems just beyond his grasp. But Grug is full of determination and his
adventures are always full of surprises.
Featuring exquisite puppetry and more of the gentle storytelling that
has delighted audiences around the world, this brand new show
has been created especially for the next generation of our littlest
theatregoers (and those who just love Grug).

Arts Centre Melbourne presents Theatre Beating’s
The Magic Chicken
Direct from New Zealand
It looks like another quiet day in the run-down old bistro - until the
arrival of an unexpected feathery visitor. This clucky young lady
soon has the besotted chefs wrapped around her wing tip, until
a ravenous customer stirs the situation up into a casserole of
confusion. Will our plucky chicken escape the pot? Will the wolfish
customer get his just desserts? Can our dumb waiters stop the caper
from turning to custard?
Make Your Own
Rainbow!
The Magic Chicken mixes magic, mime, puppetry, slapstick and
live music in a cartoon kitchen.
Just like Grug, you can prove
your determination by building
your very own rainbow. Come
before or stay after for some
free foyer fun!
“A great plot with perfectly choreographed mime which
easily kept every child mesmerised from start to finish.”

The Intergalactic Nemesis
Target Earth: A Live Action Graphic Novel
Direct from USA
The year is 1933. Pulitzer-winning reporter Molly Sloan, her intrepid
assistant Timmy Mendez and a mysterious librarian named Ben
Wilcott face the most serious threat Earth has ever known: an
impending invasion of sludge monsters from the planet Zygon.
An all-ages adventure story set in the 1930s, The Intergalactic
Nemesis mashes up comic-book and radio-play formats into a
one-of-a-kind theatrical experience – the Live Action Graphic Novel.
Three actors voice dozens of characters, a Foley artist creates all the
sound effects, and a pianist plays a cinematic score, whilst more
than 1,250 individual full-colour hi-res comic book panels tell a
hilarious sci-fi adventure story from an enormous movie screen.
And it’s all done live in front of your eyes.
“Great fun! [A] happily retro multi-media extravaganza.”

The Rabbits
An Opera Australia and Barking Gecko Theatre Company co-production in
association with West Australian Opera, commissioned by Melbourne Festival
and Perth International Arts Festival.
Based on the book by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan
Composer: Kate Miller-Heidke
Librettist: Lally Katz
Adaptor and Director: John Sheedy
John Marsden and Shaun Tan’s haunting picture book tells a story we
all know: a story of colonisation, civilisation and progress – a story about
displacement, destruction and culture clash. And in that landscape, it
tells a story of hope, taking root.
It’s a story for young people, it’s a story for old people, it’s a story for
all of us. Opera Australia and Barking Gecko Theatre Company have
assembled some of Australia’s foremost creative talents to collaborate
on a new opera for children and families.
“A triumphant adaptation.”

The First Call Fund ensures that
disadvantaged young people from
across Victoria can experience
the performing arts right here
at Arts Centre Melbourne. Your
support goes directly to schools
and community organisations that
need it most, subsidising the cost
of seeing a live performance or
participating in one of our inspiring
programs.

Supporter:
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our supporters, whose generosity, loyalty and commitment play a crucial role in ensuring as many
Victorian children and adults as possible have the opportunity to experience the joy of the performing arts here in Melbourne. The
vision and dedication of all our Arts Angels have a profound and lasting impact on the quality, accessibility and relevance of Arts
Centre Melbourne’s programs and facilities.
We offer a very special thank you to Miss Betty Amsden AO for establishing the Betty Amsden Arts Education Endowment Fund for
Children and the Betty Amsden Participation Program. Betty’s inspirational support will ensure that Arts Centre Melbourne remains a
place for exploration, imagination, illumination and creativity for future generations.
