FMC ENDOWMENT 2015 ANNUAL REPORT
The F. Melius Christiansen (FMC) Endowment Fund was
established in 1996 by the American Choral Directors Association
of Minnesota (ACDA-MN) to guarantee a vibrant future for
choral music in the state of Minnesota. Its mission is to provide
financial support to Minnesota choral conductors for professional
development and graduate education, to encourage young
musicians in the state of Minnesota to pursue choral conducting
as a career, and to provide financial support for administration of
FMC Endowment Fund Committee activities.
THE INSPIRATION
The endowment’s namesake, F. Melius Christiansen (18711955), was a Norwegian immigrant who is considered the
‘father’ of a cappella singing in North America. Christiansen
founded the St. Olaf Choir in Northfield, Minnesota, and shaped
it into arguably the best-known collegiate choir in the world.
For nearly thirty years, he used an ethic of hard work to achieve
perfect intonation, seamless ensemble blend, and crisp diction.
The F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund recognizes
Christiansen’s inspirational contributions to the choral art.
THE IMPACT
In addition to providing administrative support for the
Endowment Fund Committee, The FMC Endowment Fund
offers scholarships to ACDA-MN conductors studying at the
undergraduate or graduate levels and to conductors actively
directing academic, community, corporate, faith-based and
professional choral ensembles. Scholarship programs provide
financial support for ACDA-MN members and collegiate student
conductors to attend Summer Dialogue, ACDA national and
division conferences, the World Symposium on Choral Music
and to pursue graduate study in choral conducting. Scholarship
descriptions and the 2015 recipients are listed on pages 4 and 5.

With the help of an FMC Graduate Scholarship, I was able to focus
on my studies and properly immerse myself in the education and
experiential opportunities afforded to me at the University of
Toronto... ACDA-MN and the FMC Endowment Fund will have played
a major role...and I will be forever grateful for their contributions
