Halcyon DIR Dive Systems
1 Wreck of the Sapona, Bimini/Dickie Walls Halcyon DIR Dive Systems “Doing It Right” diving is a philosophical approach to scuba diving, holistic in conception, which elaborates the essential elements of sound diving practice. DIR promotes rational choices with respect to dive teams, dive preparation, and equipment configuration as a means toward greater safety and more fun. Halcyon has been at the forefront of DIR since its inception; as internationally-active explorers, our staff develops, builds, and relies on the very same equipment to keep us safe in some of the world’s most inhospitable locations. From deep wreck and overhead exploration to recreational reef dives, DIR and Halcyon are revolutionizing diving while striving to make it safer and more enjoyable. Doing It Right is in Halcyon’s DNA 2 Cover: California kelp/Jeff Hannigan • Fiji starfish/Sonya Tittle Halcyon’s manufacturing center, High Springs, Florida Halcyon is truly a “ground up” manufacturing company specializing in a core group of unique products designed to make an activity that we live for – diving – safer and more exciting. From an original idea to the design, prototype creation, testing, tooling, and full production, a Halcyon diver is rarely more than an arm's reach away at any step of the production process. Halcyon believes that every detail makes a difference in the quality of your work and play. We also believe that the faith you place in our ability demands our respect and sincerest effort, as we work diligently to honor your support. Diving the English Channel with Underwater Explorers/Jarrod Jablonski 3 Reduced Drag + Proper Balance = Better Diving! Bulky BCs draped with padding and fitted with a one-size-fitsall air cell may seem good in a showroom, but in the water they produce unnecessary drag, requiring exponentially more effort. Halcyon's Multifunction Compensator™ gives you the advantage to get the most out of every dive. From your first check-out dive to your mastery of Trimix diving, Halcyon’s MC System™ can be fine-tuned to fit any diver and any conceivable dive. No other system in the world provides better balance or less drag. Multifunction Compensator Systems Eclipse™ & Pioneer™ Single Cylinder Systems Explorer™ Double Cylinder Systems Lift & Surface Flotation Weight & Trim Discovery Passage, Campbell River BC/Sonya Tittle 4 Diving the Halcyon Eclipse Wing in Bimini/Dickie Walls Merely doubling the area of one’s BC results in a force of resistance that is four times as great and requires nearly 16 times more energy to move through the water. This factor means that small improvements in your equipment's profile can massively reduce the energy you expend, ultimately resulting in less effort and more fun. Halcyon’s range of carefully designed BCs can each be mated to our infinitely adjustable Secure Harness System, providing divers with streamlined buoyancy across a range of single and double tank diving environments. A wide array of weighting options complement the Halcyon diver’s ability to tune their gear’s configuration. Choose from a stainless or aluminum backplate and add trim weights, ACB weight pockets, or V-weight to perfectly balance your diving configuration. Divers from around the world turn to us for their gear because of a simple formula that we’ve always followed: Dive, design, prototype, dive, refine, dive, build, dive. Repeat as necessary. Our latest creation? The Halcyon Eclipse wing. Think of it as a Pioneer wing gone to the gym. Halcyon builds the Eclipse’s outer shell from 1680-denier ballistic nylon. We then add an inner bladder constructed from the same puncture-resistant 400denier Nylon inner-bladder material used in the Explorer. In other words, the Eclipse is a low profile, exploration-grade wing that leaves all other single tank designs in its shadow. Streamlined. Ruggedized. Another example of Halcyon taking the game to the next level. Halcyon’s original Pioneer shook up recreational diving by promoting the benefits of a streamlined single-tank, circularbladder wing. This circular design simplifies removal of gas from the rear OPV and creates greater in-water stability. Pioneer series wings utilize a welded shell design. The Eclipse wings share the Pioneer’s long, narrow, wing profile to support the diver’s tank along his or her entire length, preventing unnecessary drag and minimizing effort. 6 Florida/Anthony Rue • Bimini/Dickie Walls A choice of lift capacities helps to maximize comfort and streamlining while accounting for various buoyancy requirements that result from differences in tank size, exposure protection, or equipment requirements. Eclipse wings require a single tank adapter to mount with your Secure Harness backplate system. Pioneer wings continue to utilize Halcyon’s adapter-free design and only require a set of Halcyon cam straps for mounting. Eclipse wings are available in 30 and 40 lbs lift capacities. Pioneer wings are available in 27, 36, and 45 lbs lift capacities. Explorer Buoyancy Compensators The Explorer double tank wings are available in 40 lbs, 55 lbs, and 70 lbs lift capacities to accommodate a wide range of tank sizes, exposure protection, and equipment requirements. •1680-denier ballistic nylon outer shell for increased abrasion resistance •Heavy-duty zipper with a three-inch wide barrier to prevent zipper chafe on the inner bladder •“Trapdoor” drainage system allows water to drain rapidly from the outer cover to reduce excess weight and diver effort reboarding the dive boat •Strain relief on corrugated hose and precision location of elbow connection reduce stress on this vital area •400 denier nylon bladder maximizes durability with puncture resistance and greater flexibility The 40 lbs Explorer wing provides a minimalist approach to buoyancy where double aluminum 80s and a wetsuit are the rig of choice. The widely popular 55 lbs Explorer wing is ideally suited for situations requiring additional lift, such as when diving with heavy double steel tanks. The 70 lbs Explorer wing is designed specifically for heavier steel tanks and multiple stages where divers are unable to attain proper lift from the Explorer 55 lbs wing. Halcyon’s Eclipse and Explorer wings carry CE type approved for sale in all of the European Community. All Halcyon wings now come with our newly designed precision-flow inflator. The internal components and buttons are 316 stainless steel. Halcyon’s inflator provides a controlled low-volume air flow to allow the diver to fine tune their buoyancy and resist freezeing in extremely cold conditions. The Halcyon inflator is another Halcyon innovation that will only be found on Eclipse, Pioneer, and Explorer wings. V-Weights are vailable in 11 lbs and 8 lbs sizes. Halcyon’s Weighted Single Tank Adapter provides six pounds of non-releasable ballast between you and your single cylinder rig. The weighted STA works with all Halcyon backplate and single tank wing designs. Trim Weighting Kit The Halcyon Trim Weighting Kit promotes heads-up surface airway protection by counteracting the positive tendency of buoyant cylinders. •Shifting weight from a diver's waist toward their center, such as with a stainless Halcyon Backplate or trim weight system, facilitates horizontal diver trim and reduces drag •Popular with instructors who are sensitive to the complete loss of a diver's weight and who resist integrated weights that prevent practicing emergency weight removal Available in two configurations– ACB 30 (15 lbs/side) and ACB 20 (10 lbs/side) capacity. •Stainless steel buckle and two-inch webbing provide attachment and quick release of a small canister light on ACB 30 •Warm water divers not encumbered by thick gloves or not interested in attaching a canister light may prefer the streamlined ACB 20 which utilizes a side release buckle, acting as both the release mechanism and weight handle Halcyon’s ACB Systems are protected by US Patent #6527480. Halcyon’s Trim Weighting Kit is protected by US Patents #5855454 and 6530725b1. •Up to five pounds of weight can be attached to your tank with each streamlined trim weight pocket Bimini/Dickie Walls • Fiji Reef/Sonya Tittle 9 Alternate Lift Devices Lift devices are essential tools for all diving activities ranging from recreational drift and salvage diving to signaling and emergency flotation. When combined with the ease of storage provided by the MC Storage Pak, the flexible manner in which a variety of lift devices can be integrated into the Halcyon MC system emphasizes diver safety and comfort. Halcyon's Supra closed and semi-closed circuit lift bags, Surf Shuttle™, and/or Diver’s Alert Markers belong on every drift, shore, or wreck dive. The Diver’s Life Raft™ is a vital addition to anyone’s kit when presented with the possiblity of separation from the boat or being swept away from shore. 10 Lift Bags Halcyon Semi-Closed Circuit 60 lbs Lift Bag Halcyon’s SCC 60 was designed to allow for easy lift inflation when convenient access to a low-pressure inflation hose isn’t an option. Designed to be filled by the diver’s second stage regulator, the SCC 60 combines the ease of inflation of a traditional bell bottomed bag but with a specially designed fluted entrance way to greatly reduce the risk of gas escaping. The SCC 60 is also fitted with an over pressure release valve to dial in precise amounts of lift and to prevent damage caused by overinflation. Halcyon Closed Circuit 80 & 185lb. Lift Bags Halcyon’s closed circuit lift bags were designed to provide a reliable source of redundant buoyancy at depth or on the surface. The closed circuit bags can be inflated with a low pressure inflation hose through the patented No-Loc connector. Alternatively they can be orally inflated when necessary. SCC 60 •Semi-closed circuit design, perfect for wet suit divers •Over-pressure valve allows for lift modulation during salvage lift operations •Baffled inflation chamber prevents accidental dumping in rough conditions CC 80 & 185 •The industry standard for technical applications where precise control over lift and surface floatation are essential •Closed circuit design ensures that the object of a difficult search will reach the surface without the risk of inadvertently dumping or losing buoyancy •Attach to any low pressure inflator hose using a No-Loc connector or orally inflate Cayman lift bag series/David Rhea 11 Markers & Rafts Diver Alert Markers Halcyon's series of Diver Alert Markers provide maximum visibility and redundant flotation at the surface. Open water divers should always carry a marker buoy they can deploy in the event of separation from buddy, primary group, or boat. Small Alert Marker: 3.3' long, 6 lbs lift Big Alert Marker: 4.5' long, 40 lbs lift Super Alert Marker: 6' long, 52 lbs lift Big and Super Alert Markers both come with Coast Guard approved SOLAS reflective tape across the top for improved visibility. Halcyon Dive Alert Markers feature closed-circuit (one-way valve) construction. All markers are small enough when deflated to fit in a Halcyon thigh pocket or MC Storage Pak. Halcyon Surf Shuttle The Surf Shuttle provides an essential margin of safety for the diver facing a long wait at the surface prior to boat pickup, or even a long swim to shore. Essential gear for any diver who enjoys drift diving in a ripping current. •30 lbs lift capacity •Perfect for divemasters or instructors working with novice divers •Can be deployed with a spool to mark position •Special message holder allows divers to communicate with surface crews •Stores neatly in the MC Storage Pak or thigh pocket Diver's Life Raft •300 lbs lift capacity; functions as both lift and signal device •Redundant flotation at any depth •Similar to Navy pilot life raft on the surface •Inflatable floor •Optional storage pouch for divers not utilizing Halcyon’s MC Storage Pak •Optimal for cold water and where divers might be stranded far from shore 12 Once thought the domain of cave divers, Halcyon reels and spools have become a common tool for many divers. From their use as cave and wreck penetration lines to their place in deploying lift bags it is becoming increasingly rare to find a diver without such basic safety equipment. Defender Spools For any diving application where you will use less than 150 feet of line, the spool provides rapid, jam-free deployment and retrieval. Defender™ spools are the DIR choice for deploying lift devices in the open water or for use as jump/gap or safety spools while cave diving. •Made from solid Delrin for crush-proof durability Pathfinder Reels The Pathfinder™ series of line reels satisfies the demanding requirements of exploration as well as the day-to-day needs of recreational divers. The unique ambidextrous side handle is machined from a solid piece of aluminum and fits closely to the spool, limiting the possibility of entanglement. All Pathfinder reels come standard with cold water lock-down screw to ease operation when a diver is wearing neoprene or dry gloves. Pathfinder reels come with #24 braded nylon line in lengths of 400, 800, and 1200 feet/122, 244, and 366 meters. •Stainless steel, double-ended bolt snap attachment hardware •Available with 75’/23 m, 100’/30 m, and 150’/46 m of #24 braded nylon line Guidelines 13 Halcyon RB80 Rebreather Halcyon’s extremely intuitive and reliable operating system eliminates distractions and reduces failures that can mean the difference between a mission’s success or failure. The simplicity that gives the Halcyon RB80™ its advantage for exploration is just as important for less demanding environments where divers may become distracted by their There is nothing like an idea who's time has come Divers from the icy waters of the Antarctic to the caves of the Woodville Karst Plain rely on Halcyon for reliable, safe, and intuitive rebreather diving. surroundings, by the pictures they are taking, or by the needs of a dive buddy. Recreational and technical divers, leading-edge explorers, and film industry producers all depend on Halcyon for their primary light systems. Conventional Halcyon lighting systems utilize a filament similar to that found in a conventional light bulb and have a yellow cast and less water column penetration than HID. HID technology replaces the filament of a conventional light bulb with a capsule of gas in which two closely spaced electrodes are supplied the power to emit light. This unique system produces substantially more light (at daylight color temperature) while consuming significantly less power. 18 watt HID Lighthead Halcyon's workhorse light, the 18 watt HID, allows full adjustability and easy bulb changes in a conventional test tube style design. Light output is similar to a 75 watt halogen light at a fraction of the power consumption. 10 watt HID Lighthead Where innovation meets practicality. Halcyon's fully closed light head (patent pending) provides divers with a nearly indestructible light head that is able to be adjusted from a laser-like beam to a diffuse soft light with the mere twist of a dial. 16 Bimini top and center/Dickie Walls • Key Largo/David Rhea • Fiji starfish/Sonya Tittle Helios Systems •Canisters are milled from a solid rod of Delrin for exacting tolerances •NiMH batteries provide more than 50% greater energy density than lead-acid counterparts, allowing light canisters that are a fraction of the size of conventional lights •Environmentally Green: Contain no cadnium, mercury, lead Proteus Systems •Traditional sealed-lead acid batteries •One piece canister maintains maximum reliability All Halcyon Lights come standard with the following: •Locking latches •Hands-free Goodman handle •Stainless Steel Fittings •Lifetime warranty on canister •110 or 220 volt charger •Depth rated to 500 feet Optional handles: Coldwater Goodman or Exploration Goodman with knife and thumb holder Lighting System Specifications 50 watt Halogen 10 watt HID 18 watt HID Proteus 3 3.4” OD/8.5” L Weight 4.25 lbs Buoyancy -2 lbs Proteus 6 4.2” OD/12” L Weight 10 lbs Buoyancy -3 lbs Helios 4.5 2.5” OD/9.5” L Weight 3.5 lbs Buoyancy -2.5 lbs Helios 9 2.75” OD/10.5” L Weight 5 lbs Buoyancy -2.25 lbs 120 min 8 hours 240 min Helios 13 3.5” OD/10.5” L Weight 6 lbs Buoyancy -2.25 lbs 360 min 12 hours 390 min 120 min 45 min 270 min 120 min 240 min California kelp, top and left/Jeff Hannigan • Mexican cenote/Sonya Tittle • Key Largo/David Rhea 17 Apollo Video Lighting & Video Camera Housings Whether building specialty lighting systems for National Geographic projects, making the shot work for world renown professionals like Bob Talbot, or providing crucial lighting for productions on Japan’s powerhouse television network NHK, Halcyon can increasingly be found center stage with our innovative Apollo Video Lighting Systems™. Rugged Cordura construction and double Velcro® closure make the Halcyon Gators as tough as they are functional. Now you can gain the same high performance advantage as leading exploration divers. From cave to wreck and everything in betwen, technical divers will find Gator Wraps a welcome alternative to cumbersome ankle weights and bulky dry suit legs. Available in adjustable 12-inch , 14-inch, and 16-inch calf sizes; Gator Wraps stretch to accommodate most divers. P-Valves Many male divers credit the Halcyon P-Valve among their best equipment purchases. With the Halcyon P-Valve divers can easily avoid the health and DCS risk associated with poor hydration while protecting the sanctity of their diving suit. Whether you are interested in a short, comfortable dive or face long decompression obligations, the Halcyon P-Valve can provide a new level of diving comfort. Balanced The Halcyon balanced system increases comfort and confidence through the addition of a chamber to equalize the pressure between the valve system and the outside water. One check valve prevents water from entering the catheter system and the other allows ambient suit air to enter the assembly, equalizing the pressure. This unit also contains a P-through screw that can function as a back-up to the first check valve. Unbalanced The Halcyon unbalanced valve is made of the same high-quality components as the balanced valve, but does not include the balance chamber. This means that water can enter the tubing/ condom assembly when the P-through screw is opened. The unbalanced valve’s low profile makes this unit ideal for wet suit use. All Halcyon P-Valves come with crush-proof tubing to prevent unfortunate kinks during a dive and install in minutes with a minimum of tools. Easy to use external catheters are also available through your Halcyon dealer. 22 Dry Suit Inflation Pockets If your idea of a good dive includes cold water, long bottom Halcyon Pockets add a needed level of utility to your wet or dry times, or helium-based mixes, you will understand the necessity suit.
