GRANITE RANITE ! s k c o R BUILD A STRONG FUTURE IN GRANITE Thank you for your interest in the Granite School District! We believe you can build a solid future in Granite. Since its founding in 1904, with only 58 teachers and 4,000 students, Granite is now the eighth largest employer in Utah and currently educates nearly 70,000 students. When you join our district, you’re working with a strong team of educators. Our teachers and administrators are experienced and supportive. They are guided by the belief that all children can learn. A Dan Jones & Associates survey indicates the public feels Granite’s greatest strength is its dedicated and committed teachers. The district provides teachers with an array of resources to help students meet their potential. We have an award-winning mentoring program to assist teachers from their first day through their first three years of teaching. “I really enjoy helping students understand what it’s like in other parts of the world. It’s a great opportunity to help them understand that differences and diversity are positive things.” Most important, Granite enjoys a unique “community of caring” among teachers, students and parents. This gives our students an advantage in learning and prepares them for the future. In the following pages, you’ll meet some of our outstanding students and teachers and learn more about how you can build your own career in Granite. Brittany Sylvester Matheson Junior High "I want to be an E.R. nurse so that I can help people when they are sick or hurt. I think it will be a challenging and rewarding job and it will be exciting because each day will be very different from the one before. I am taking classes at the Granite Technical Institute to prepare myself and by the end of this year I will have completed the courses for my C.N.A. license." -Amanda Pennington Junior at Hunter High School "I've had many great teachers through the years. Mr. Griffiths [Olympus Junior High] was the best history and geography teacher I've had. His class was fun yet challenging. Mrs. Hollberg [Olympus Junior High] was very good at teaching English. Her instructions on writing were very helpful, and she was great when it came to teaching grammar." -Sam Goodfellow Sophomore at Olympus High School S A LT L A K E C I T Y, U TA H Granite School District • 2500 South State Street • Salt Lake City, Utah 84115-3110 Granite’s Human Resources (HR) staff is committed to hiring the most qualified teachers for our schools. Granite School District • 2500 South State Street • Salt Lake City, Utah 84115-3110 An award-winning introduction to teaching R AL CES UR ESO c o R Great Beginnings, professional learning and quality teaching resources N SIO FES ! s k PRO GRANITE RANITE CARVING YOUR CAREER IN GRANITE The American School Boards Journal presented its Magna Award to Granite District for our Great Beginnings program in April 2002. With nominations coming from around the country, the award honors a district for outstanding projects that advance student learning. The Great Beginnings program helps improve student learning by retaining new teachers and improving the quality of teaching. Although the Utah State Office of Education requires districts to provide an induction program, Great Beginnings goes the extra mile. Before its inception, the district lost about 28 percent of its new teachers during their first three years of employment. Interviews indicated these teachers needed more attention and resources for improved teaching. With the implementation of Great Beginnings, attrition is now at seven percent, and most of the departures are due to natural attrition, i.e., the spouse accepting employment out of state, etc. “Every school district has its own common language and criteria for teachers to follow. Granite’s Great Beginnings program clearly outlined expectations and focused on getting me goal oriented to help me succeed as a teacher.” Robin Farnsworth 2013-2014 Excel Outstanding Educator Great Beginnings starts with a two-day seminar. All teachers new to the district are expected to attend one of several of the seminars which are held throughout the summer months. Topics and presentations include classroom management, curriculum and instruction, and professionalism. The sessions are taught by master teachers with many years of classroom experience. New teachers also learn about their benefits, professional learning opportunities, and other issues relevant to their position. Each teacher is assigned a highly-trained mentor in his/her school. Mentors are supported by the district’s Department of Teacher Induction, Intervention and Support. Mentors meet one-on-one to provide emotional support and address any needs the new teacher may have. When a school has more than one new teacher, the mentor might choose to provide support by offering group meetings. Professional learning Teachers can advance up the pay scale, improve their teaching skills, learn about the latest education research and work toward advanced degrees and national board certification through classes and programs sponsored by the Educator Support and Development Services. For more information on professional learning in Granite School District, contact the Educator Support and Development Services Director at 385-646-4582 or visit us online at www.graniteschools.org. Outdoor enthusiasts can access world-class ski resorts just minutes from the city, plus breathtaking locations for camping, golfing, fishing, hiking, biking and more. Beyond the Wasatch Front, Utah hosts several national parks, each with its own distinct landscape, that await exploration. Salt Lake and its surrounding areas also provide sporting events and other cultural offerings including symphony, ballet, theater, opera, modern dance and museums. The Sundance Film Festival, Utah Shakespearean Festival and Mormon Tabernacle Choir are internationally renowned. The city’s art galleries are showcased during monthly “gallery strolls.” Universities host lectures and student productions open to the public.
