E-Issue - Western Circuit Sailing Regatta
THE WESTERN BUGLE
WESTERN CIRCUIT IS BACK! AND IT’S BIGGER, BETTER
AND MORE EXCITING!
The 13th SMU-RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta is just
around the corner! Scheduled to kick off on Sunday, August 15,
we can all expect to see the close racing and fun after-parties
that make the Western Circuit the most anticipated keelboat
regatta in Singapore.
The 2009 installment saw over 40 boats in 6 different classes
battling each other amidst strong currents, shifty wind conditions and occasional
storm winds hitting 25+ knots, for the finishing line. Tears were shed, new friendships forged and stories of passion, courage and camaraderie unfolded as the mettle
of each sailor was put to the test.

WELCOME TO THE
13TH SMU-RM WESTERN CIRCUIT SAILING REGATTA
N
ow in its 13th year, the Western Circuit Regatta is the corner stone of
Raffles Marina’s sailing calendar. This year we welcome all participants
in the hope and expectation that a great time will be had by all. Three weekends of keen competition on the water and some serious partying await.
Our close association with Singapore Management University (SMU) has
brought added vigor and activity to not only this regatta but the sailing scene
in general at Raffles Marina now that SMU sailing club is based here at Tuas. It is our sincere hope
that SMU sailors will maintain their close ties with the sailing community once they have completed their studies, and their close involvement with this event must surely pave the way.
Our generosity of spirit will again be put to the test this year as we look to generate funds for
Sailability Singapore, that most worthy of organisations who through the activity of sailing,
enrich the lives of people with any type of disability, the elderly, the financially and socially disadvantaged. It is a cause close to all our hearts and we ask that you give generously when the time
comes.
Finally I would like to thank our sponsors, Puteri Harbour, and Luminox Watches and the hardworking and ever enthusiastic students of SMU
Fair winds to one and all.
Robert Bird

AROUND THE BUOYS
Within the past year, the Singapore keelboat sailing scene has undergone a major restructuring;
boats have changed hands, skippers have swopped boats… And with some old-timers taking their
leave and many more new entrants, this year’s class winners is really anybody’s guess. We pick
out some of our favourites:
KukuKerchu
Skippered by David Ross, winner of last year’s IRC Club
Racer class on Frangipani Girl, he will be back to claim
the title in the IRC class this year with his recent purchase KukuKerchu, a Ker32. Under her experienced handler, this fast boat has achieved a track record of winning
all her events from the Singapore Straits Regatta 2010 to
the recently concluded Ko Samui Regatta 2010.
isdoO
The highly dyslexic (oops!) skipper Nicolas Giller is back to reclaim his title in the multihull class. After finishing 4 points clear of
second placed Uli Braun last year, with 4 bullet finishes in 5 races,
we watch in eager anticipation as he makes his second attempt to
repeat this feat at this year’s regatta.
Men at Work
After the tragedy that became L’Autre Femme,
Brent Morgans is back again this year on “Men at
Work”, an archibald 35. Supported by a wealth of
racing experience around the region, a great boat
and crew, Men at Work finished 2nd overall in a
close fight with Windsikher at the recently concluded RSYC regatta and will definitely be a
strong competitor at the upcoming Western Circuit Regatta.
Bladerider Moths
Have you seen these flying moths around? For the first time,
these fast, agile boats will be competing in the Western
Circuit. Watch out for these small 8.0m boats zipping in and
around their bigger counterparts! The rapid acceleration
and high speeds associated with this boat design will certainly make them a spectacle to watch on water.

SAILING WITH HEART
We are all boaters who enjoy sailing, and like you, we have one wish in common: that our love of
sailing can reach the young, old, uninitiated and disabled alike.
As part of this year’s 13th SMU-RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta, we will be having a fundraiser– a charity car wash and auction with all proceeds and donations going to our chosen
beneficiary: Singapore Sailability. Last year, the charity auction raised $10,000, this year, we
hope make it happen again and invite all participants of Western Circuit to join us in showing our
support for our disabled friends.
Charity Car Wash
Simply head down to the charity car wash at Raffles Marina on the 15th (Sun), 22nd (Sun) and the
28th (Sat) of August where SMU volunteers will wash your car for a nominal fee of $10/car. Or
get a package- $25 for the 3 days!
Charity Auction
Alternatively, show your support by donating interesting items to be put up at the charity auction
held during the gala dinner on the 22nd (Sun) of August. Do remember to bring along a big heart
and some cash to bid for other exciting items!
For donation and queries, please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
We thank you in advance for your kind support!
