Your stay
Staying in hospital can be an isolating experience so on
The Chelsea Wing we have dedicated staff who will visit
you twice a day. They offer support, the opportunity to run
errands, or are there just for a friendly chat.
All patient rooms on the unit have ensuite bathroom
facilities. Patients are looked after by trained nurses
supported by healthcare assistants. All patients are
admitted under the care of a consultant with the support
of their team.
Patients are welcome to bring in their own pyjamas, night
dress, dressing gown and slippers, and items such as
towels, shampoo and soap are provided.
Patients are asked to bring along any mobility aids so their
physiotherapist can advise if they are appropriate.
6
Good food is key to a successful recovery. All patients are
nutritionally assessed on admission to the ward to ensure
special dietary needs can be met. Our chefs will prepare
your food in a dedicated kitchen. Our menu is varied on a
three-week cycle to add variety to those patients staying
with us for a longer period of time.
All patients and relatives are welcome to telephone The
Chelsea Wing at any time should they have any concerns
or queries. Alternatively, there are phones in each room for
patients to use for local calls and incoming calls. There are
no additional charges for this service.
Visitors are welcome throughout the day and may stay with
you overnight by agreement with the Ward Sister.
We will treat you like a guest as well as a patient.

Clinical services
As a private facility within an NHS Trust, our standards
of quality and safety are monitored by the Care Quality
Commission (CQC). We work continually to improve patient
safety, clinical effectiveness and our patients’ experience.
We constantly audit and review our clinical practice to
ensure that we provide the very best care.
All staff are trained to deliver the highest possible
standards of care.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy is available to prepare you for day-today activities after your discharge from hospital, if required.
Your therapist can advise you on the need and availability of
ongoing therapy services following your discharge. This will
be discussed with you on an individual basis.
Imaging Department
Your chosen consultant is responsible for your overall
care with the support of his or her specialised team. All
consultations are delivered on a one-to-one basis, giving
you plenty of time to discuss your treatment plan.
The Imaging Department is staffed by experienced
professionals and is equipped with state-of-the-art
equipment including two CT scanners, an MRI scanner,
ultrasound machines and digital fluroscopy.
Theatres
Our digital imaging system allows reports and images to be
sent and viewed electronically. The department also offers
bone density scanning and nuclear medicine.
We have six multi-use theatres which provide standard
planned surgical procedures, as well as 24-hour emergency
services.
Pathology Department
Two theatres are equipped with laminar flow facilities for
orthopaedic and ultra-clean procedures. There is a ninebed recovery bay and a separate two-bed children’s bay.
Most pathology specimens are tested on-site to ensure fast
turnaround times. Test results are available electronically
so your consultant can access them at the touch of a
button.
In addition to routine planned surgery sessions, there are
daily sessions for emergency surgery and trauma sessions
from Monday to Saturday.
Endoscopy Unit
Day case procedures that do not require admission to
hospital are performed in the Treatment Centre which
has an admissions facility, seven theatres and a recovery/
discharge lounge.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy can help to maintain and restore your
physical wellbeing after surgery.
Your consultant can advise if this is an appropriate
treatment for you.
We offer manipulative and mobilising techniques, as well as
individually tailored exercise programmes.
The Therapy Services Department is staffed by professional
and experienced clinical physiotherapists. We support best
practice and strive to provide the best in patient care.

A comfortable stay
Everyone in our team is committed to keeping patients safe
during their stay. You and your visitors can help us:
• You will be asked to wear an identity band throughout
your stay. Please check that the details on the band are
correct and that staff check them prior to giving you any
medication or performing any procedures.
10
• Check staff wash their hands when they come into
contact with you. If you are not sure that this has been
done please ask them to do this, they will feel happy that
you have felt confident to challenge them.
It is important that your room is cleaned daily and to a high
standard.
• Regularly wash your hands, particularly before eating, as
this is the best way to stop the spread of infection.
If your room has not been cleaned or if it has not been
cleaned to a high standard, please alert the ward staff so
that they can rectify the situation.
• Ensure visitors use the alcohol gel to clean their hands
when they visit and do not allow them to sit on your bed.
For your comfort
• Please ask your friends and relatives not to visit if they
have a cough, cold or infectious disease.
Patients tire easily after an operation so it is sometimes
better for you to have short visits. Please let your relatives
and friends know this.
• Please ask visitors to use the visitor toilet, not the one in
your room.
We welcome flowers on the unit and will change the water
daily for you to minimise any infection risk.
A clean environment
Infection control is one of our top priorities. We have strict
processes in place to minimise the risk of infection to
patients.
Preventing infection is a key part of delivering good clinical
care. Our cleaning staff are well trained and have the
best tools for the job—their work is overseen by the Hotel
Services Manager.
MRSA/infection control
We take infection control and hospital cleanliness very
seriously—our recent track record compares well with other
hospitals in London and nationally:
• No patient admitted to Chelsea and Westminster
Hospital for routine planned surgery in 2009/10
contracted MRSA
If required, you will be tested for MRSA prior to admission.
You will be nursed in a private room which helps to prevent
cross-infection.
• Monthly hand hygiene audits are carried out by Infection
Control Link Professionals, staff who are responsible for
infection control in their areas of the hospital
Please ensure that when your visitors come to see you in the
hospital, they always use the alcohol gel provided for hand
cleaning.
• Our hygiene standards are officially rated ‘Excellent’
(Patient Environment Action Team data—National Patient
Safety Agency)
All staff are fully trained in infection control and prevention
techniques to protect you.
• Patients and visitors to the hospital can contribute to
high standards of hand hygiene by using the hand gel
which is widely available throughout the hospital
11
The Westminster Wing—Outpatient Services
The Westminster Wing comprises four consulting rooms
within the Private Patients Unit, and several other
consulting rooms located within specialist departments
in the main hospital—this means that the appropriate test
equipment is always close to hand.
We endeavour to offer a very high standard of customer
care. Our patients receive individualised care and respect
for their dignity is maintained at all times.
We believe that it is important to provide high quality
patient information—leaflets are available as appropriate.
Pharmacy
The Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Pharmacy offers
pharmaceutical services to all hospital inpatients and
outpatients. To ensure your safety, medications are
dispensed by our pharmacy robot and checked by a
pharmacist.
The outpatient dispensary is open 9am–6pm Monday to
Friday and 10am–12 noon at weekends.

cover. Patients who are funding their own care make payment
by cheque in advance, cash or credit card.
For most surgical and outpatient procedures the hospital
offers care package prices for patients who wish to fund
their own treatment. Individual prices are confirmed by the
hospital following the patient’s initial consultation, in advance
of admission.
For price enquiries, payment options and general referrals
please contact our Customer Services Manager on
020 3315 5377.
Private health insurance
Prior to any appointments or procedures being scheduled
you must confirm with your insurer that you are covered for
the condition concerned and eligible for care at Chelsea and
Westminster Hospital.
Upon gaining confirmation you will be issued with a number
for this episode of care.
We will require this number along with your insurance and
credit card details so that any excess costs arising outside of
the scope of your policy can be guaranteed by you.
You will be contacted before any payment is taken.
Self funding
Inpatients
Should you choose to fund your care independently, we will
provide you with an estimate for the cost of the predicted
care package that you will require. You will need to pay in
advance for this package of care.
This can be done by cash, cheque, debit or credit card seven
days in advance of the date of your admission for inpatient
care.
Outpatients
Outpatient charges are to be settled on the day of the
appointment—credit card details will be required or a cash
payment can be made. All payments should be made to the
cashier on The Chelsea Wing.
How to pay
If you are paying by cash and we do not know the full costs of
your tests and/or treatment, we will take a deposit equal to
the estimated cost. Any further charges must be paid prior to
your discharge or as soon as the full costs are determined.
You will have the option to change your method of payment
when you are contacted by the cashier about settling your
account.
For any queries that you might have relating to your account
please contact the business office on 020 3315 8482.
