These are the best quality Buffalo/Cow hide and have
the assorted colours shown (I only have one of each
colour at present).
The method of securing the covers is by a leather
tie...so much better than the old push button that
seemed to either not fasten securely, or tear the faux
leather with continued usage. The price of the leather
covers is $15 AUD which will cover postage within
Oz.
Orders can be emailed to me through:

From Monty Levenson:
Recipients of the Tai Hei Shakuhachi Scholarship
honoring the memory of master craftsman Masuda
Shuho and Steve Shinraku Buchbinder have been
selected. My sincere apologies for the delay in making
this announcement. Since December, I have been
dealing with a death in my family that has taken up
much of my time and energy.
Once again, it was a challenge for Kayo and I to chose
from amongst all of the worthy individuals who
applied. Each and every one of you deserve
recognition for your hard work and dedication to
shakuhachi.
This year, thanks to several generous contributions to
the scholarship fund, we were able to give out $1,750
in cash awards as well as two non-cash awards.
Recipients of the 2008 Shakuhachi Scholarships are:
Peter Spring for the The Steven Spring Foundation
- New Orleans, LA ($500 + Shakuhachi Flute &
Accessories)
Brian
Yee
Santa
Fe,
NM
($500)
John Kypros - New York, NY ($500)
I Made Widana - Pegosekan, Bali Indonesia ($250 +

European Shakuhachi Society News
As you are probably aware, there are a number of
shakuhachi events in various countries in Europe this
summer. Please don't forget the World Shakuhachi
Festival in Sydney in July. But if you are unable to
attend that event (or even if you are), you may wish to
consider one of the European events.
The deadlines for application for these events are fast
approaching (and some have already passed). So if
you'd like to participate in them, please apply as soon
as possible.
Full details are on the ESS website:

but brief information, taken from the website, is given
below, in chronological order.
Best regards,
Jim Franklin

Short Summer School with Michael Coxall and Kiku
Day
Saturday to Sunday, 21st to 22nd June 2008, London,
UK
This year’s Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute)
summer school at SOAS, University of London, will
focus on the playing Sankyoku (traditional ensemble
3
music) and Honkyoku (traditional solo repertoire of
the Zen Buddhist monks, Komusô).
Michael Soumei Coxall is an experienced player and
teacher of Sankyoku and has a Shihan license (Master
license) from the Chikumeisha school of Kinko style
playing. The focus will be learning the technical
difficulties of the pieces as well as learning how to
integrate the Shakuhachi in the trio with Koto (13string zither) and Shamisen (long-necked lute). There
will be opportunities to play in the ensemble.
Kiku Day will teach Honkyoku from Okuda Atsuya’s
Zensabô style, focusing on the traditional techniques
as well as the aesthetics of this unique musical genre,
which used to be used as a tool for meditation.
Thoughts on how to use Honkyoku as a personal
spiritual practice will be discussed as well.
There will be classes for intermediate and advanced
players as well as ensemble playing for the Sankyoku
class and individual instruction.
Please download the detailed schedule from the SOAS
website:
