The Danish architect and designer was trained as a stonemason before
studying architecture at the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademie in
Copenhagen where he stayed until 1927. While still a student, Arne
Jacobsen showed a chair he had designed at the important Paris
‘Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes’ in
1925 and was awarded a silver medal for it.
In 1952 Arne designed the ‘Ant’ (Model No. 3100), a chair whose
name was inspired by the ‘nipped in waist of the back’ as well as
‘its thin tubular steel legs’. In 1955 Arne Jacobsen designed a
similar chair for Series 7 (Model No. 3107), which was one of the
most commercially successful lines in chairs ever produced. It was
launched in beech, black and white. In 1958 Arne Jacobsen designed,
for the interior of the Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen, the ‘Egg’ and ‘Swan’
chairs, which today are numbered among the design classics of the 20th
century. Between 1956 and 1965 Arne Jacobsen was a professor of
architecture at the Skolen for Brugskunst in Copenhagen.

As co-founder of the Congres Internationaux d’Architecture

started his own office in 1962. The following year he introduced
his Ball Chair, a hollow sphere on a stand, open on one side to
allow a person to sit within. The similar Bubble Chair was clear

Other innovative designs included his floating Pastille Chair
(similar to a solid inner tube), and Tomato Chair (more stable
with a seat between three spheres). His Screw Table, as the
name suggests, had the appearance of a flat head screw driven
into the ground. he was awarded the American Industrial Design

features to the character that Michelin used to advertise their tyres.
In 1907 Eileen Gray moved to Paris to 21 rue Bonaparte, a flat
she would live in for the rest of her life. In the 1920s, Eileen Gray
came into contact with the Dutch avant-garde group De Stijl and their
abstract geometric works. At the same time, she was made acquainted
with contemporary modern architecture through the French architect
Jean Badovici. Eileen Gray’s own work was strongly influenced by
contemporary architecture and she began to design stringently functional
furniture.
From 1926 to 1929 Eileen Gray and Badovici designed their own house
in Roquebrune: E-1027. For that house, Eileen Gray designed some
very modern furniture, including the celebrated ‘E-1027’ side table with
a circular glass top and tubular steel frame. In 1930/31 Eileen Gray
designed the furniture for Jean Badovici’s flat. In 1937 Eileen Gray
exhibited her work in Le Corbusier’s ‘Pavillon des Temps Nouveau’.
After that no more was heard about Eileen Gray; her work was not
discovered until around 1970.

and at the age of 22 he was accepted into the Copenhagen
school of Arts & Craft in Copenhagen (København).
He studied at the Copenhagen school from 1936 until 1938.
After receiving his architectural degree in 1938, he worked
as an assistant designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller’s
architectural studio before establishing his own design
studio in 1943.
Hans Wegner was a true lover of natural materials, and had
an extraordinary understanding of the need for furniture
which is both beautiful and functional at the same time.
Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture
extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. The
Royal Society of Arts, London made him an Honorary
Royal Designers for Industry in 1959.
