Designing with Medallions, Crests and Decorative Elements and Hardware With Ginger Thoerner of Interior Window Design [email protected] and Donna Skufis of Dondar Designs LLC [email protected] [email protected] website: donnaskufis.com 1 Add that unique custom touch to each client’s project 2 Using medallion without their posts can solve many fabrication and installation issues. 3 Remove the post and attach a keyhole/hidden bracket from Kirsch # 5618, 5619, 5620E Use a metal or nylon bolt to attach the front half of the bracket to the medallion. Then screw the bracket to the top of your mount board. 4 Using rings instead of medallions works too. Twist the screw eye and use a washer to screw the ring to the face of the mount board. accommodate an angle; cut a mini mount board to the angle of the bay or corner. This allows the medallion to sit dead center. Small mount boards the width of the medallion were cut to help the workroom attach the sheer swags and bishop sleeve jabots with returns. A 90 degree angle board was cut (see above) to accommodate the medallion in the corner. 5 Here the posts and medallions were used to hold the treatments. Two separate panels were made so the bishop sleeved panels would not conceal the medallion faces. Using an overlay with decorative wood moldings and medallions adds a couture finish to an otherwise simple cornice. The same metal or nylon bolts used with the hidden brackets work well when attaching medallions to overlays or hard and soft cornices. A washer may be needed to secure tightly. 6 Adding a medallion and nail heads can take a good design to outstanding. 7 The diagonal mounted panel on pole adds dimension. The hooded raised mount boards started out as a fabrication aid. 8 Combine a medallion and a pole mounted vertically for more drama. 9 Using sheered overlays with hard overlays and medallions gives this master class. Use this staggered pendant/pelmet arrangement with the pole and finales on top of the bottom pelmet but under the top pelmet layer allows for a larger finale in tight spaces. 10 Adding a decorative pole above the treatments adds height and interest to a plain treatment. Here the decorative pole is use to hide the fact that separate cornices are used in this bay. 11 Here we added a metal crest and medallions. Beads and other jewelry findings can add that one of a kind look to unique treatments. 12 Jewelry supplies and findings offer a wide variety of decorations for projects. Here we used rind stone belt buckles to adorn the hour glass shaped overlays. 13 Using paste and sawdust overlays can elevate your designs. Here we used the concrete pillars as part of the design. 14 With this step down ceiling it was difficult to position these pendants properly. 15 More paste overlays on the overlay pelmets. Using unusual suppliers like chandelier crystals to decorate this Master Bath treatment. 16 Use metal tiles to add dimension and interest to an otherwise simple cornice. These decorative metal corners were purchased from Hobby Lobby. 17 Using decorative hinges we created this awning valance. The front is held out using a dowel stick and the entire valance was fabricated using skirtex. 18 These holders were found at Hobby Lobby and a dowel stick was used to hold the pelmets. 19 Suppliers and Resources United Supply Company for medallions, finals, poles and other decorator hardware including keyhole/hidden brackets. 1.800.334.1207 fax 1.800.400.1795 www.unitedsupplyco.com Creative Hardware for decorative hardware www.creativehardware.com Creative Treatments for hardware, rods and other window treatment items. www.cerativetreatmentsllc.com Amore Drapery Hardware for crests and other specialty hardware 12121 Veterans Memorial Dr. Suite 2 Houston, TX 77067 877.440.0123 www.amoredraperyhardware.com Decorators Supply Company for paste and saw dust overlays. 800.792.2093 www.decoratorssupply.com 3610 South Morgan Street Chicago, IL 60609 Wood n Shop for decorative embossed wood carving on lay appliqués. www.woodnshop.com Fire Mountain Gems for beads, findings and earring backs (ear nuts) for nail heads. www.firemountaingems.com 20 Hobby Lobby for unique hardware, decorative tiles along with belt buckles and other jewelry items.
