Niehaus News February 2006 Volume 45, Issue 1 Happy Valentine’s Day • Vincennes IN How Do I Love Thee? by Elizabeth Browning How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. • Vincennes, IN • Terre Haute, IN • Robinson, IL I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death. Karran Sinks Goes To The International Builders Show - the largest annual light construction show in the world Jonathan Hull, the new Karran representative for Florida and the southern states. During the show, HGTV stopped by our booth. They shot a segment on our undermount-to-laminate sinks. They told us that if they used the footage, that it would be televised in April or May. We are keeping our fingers crossed that they air the show. • Vincennes, IN • St. Louis, MO • Nashville, TN • Vincennes, IN Over 100,000 builders attend this show! The Karran team made some good in-roads with some key builders and distributors. Karran attended its first ever Builders Show this year which was held in Orlando. The International Builders Show is over a million-and-a-half sq. feet of the latest advanced building products and services ever assembled. Several builders that does business with Niehaus Companies from St. Louis and Terre Haute stopped by the booth to see our products. The show was a huge success and will definitely be an annual show that we will be attending. Those attending the show were Mark Webster, Todd Donovan, Jon Hull and Eric Niehaus. Page 2 Niehaus News Splinters by Bernie Niehaus Chairman of the Board A Great Place To Live Our community, Vincennes, Indiana, is certainly a great place to live, bring up children, and to brag about. We are rich in history. In 1779, 227 years ago, George Rogers Clark and a volunteer army of French, Indians and Americans captured Fort Sackville here. The Fort was occupied by the British and this battle was a dramatic turning point in the Revolutionary War that opened up the West for expansion. To honor this great feat, we have a National Park in Vincennes which draws thousands of visitors every year. Two of the most boastful things we have in Vincennes are the Good Samaritan Hospital and Vincennes University. These two institutions are our largest employers and set our community apart from any other city of our size. The Good Samaritan Hospital is a regional hospital and services over 200,000 residents from Knox and surrounding counties. It has over 89 doctors and 1,650 employees. The hospital has opened a new Same-Day Surgery Center. Vincennes University has 4,800 students on the Vincennes campus, and over 8,000 state wide. The University offers 150 programs of study, including both transfer and two year Associate Programs. They employ over 875 faculty and staff. It is a great place to get started in college. Both Patty and I, and our five children, graduated from V.U. Our community is a great place to raise children. We have many pre-schools and day-care centers to choose from. We are also blessed with great schools. We have three county schools - South Knox, North Knox and Vincennes Community School. We are equally proud to have Flaget and Rivet Catholic grade and high schools, as well as the new Christian school. Also, we have one of the finest Y.M.C.A.’s in the country for a town of our size. It offers a wide range of programs from child day care to older adult programs. Many annual festivals lure visitors to Vincennes. Our largest is the Rendezvous, held on Memorial Day week-end. The Christmas Stroll is another event that is growing every year. It features a lighted night parade in downtown with caroler’s and carriage rides. There are several other very popular festivals throughout the year like the Watermelon Festival, The Germanfest, Muster at Wabash Bluff, and the Farmers Market every Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Our employment history has taken a great upswing in the last few years since Toyota has opened 30 miles south of Vincennes. Besides many of our area residents working at the Toyota plant, there are three local plants that support Toyota with parts. ATS in Lawrenceville, Futba and Excell in Vincennes, employ over a thousand workers. Entertainment in our community is now the best in many years with the opening of the new 8 theater Stadium Showplace. This Spring, Vincennes University will be opening the new Red Skelton Performing Arts Center. This will give us a new venue to host the Community Series and many other entertainment possibilities for the future. Our Old Town Players have their own theater now and have a series of plays throughout the year. This year three projects are scheduled for Vincennes that will make our great town even better. The first is a Riverwalk from the National Park downtown to Kimmell Park. The second is to open up First Street from downtown to the V.U. campus by lowering the railroad crossing. This will help traffic in the university area, plus, enhance our tourist attractions. The third is the connecting road between Hart Street and Highway 61. This will open up many possibilities for retail shopping, plus help the traffic in the congested Hart Street area. I feel that the future for our city is bright, and it’s certainly a great place to live. A Touching Story of Love and Marriage An elderly man lay dying in his bed. In death's agony, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom. With even greater effort, he forced his boney fingers to grab the handrail and he let himself down the stairs, one stumbling set at a time. With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven. There, on the kitchen table, spread out in rows upon wax paper, were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. Was it heaven? Or, was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife of 60 years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips were slightly parted. The wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth; seemingly bringing him back to life. The aged and withered hand, driven by one last gritty effort, shakingly made its way towards a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife. "Stay out of those," she said, "they're for the funeral!" ON MARRIAGE Marriage is an institution where two people come together to jointly solve the problems they never had before they got married. Married life is very frustrating. In the first year of marriage, the man speaks and the woman listens. In the second year, the woman speaks and the man listens. In the third year, they both speak and the neighbors listen. My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met. -- Rodney Dangerfield Page 3 Niehaus News New Employees Birthdays In February the following employees will be celebrating their birthday! TEA! • Lemons contain more sugar than strawberries • The onion is named after a Latin word meaning large pearl • Half of the world's population live on a staple diet of rice • Potato crisps were invented by a North American Indian called George Crum • During a lifetime the average person eats about 35 tons of food • Ice Cream Is Chinese Food! When the famous explorer Marco Polo returned to his homeland of Italy, from China in 1295, he brought back a recipe (among other things). The recipe, was a Chinese recipe for a desert called "Milk Ice." However, Europeans substituted cream for the milk, and voila..."Ice Cream." Ice cream has been a hit ever since! • The founder of McDonald's has a Bachelor degree in Hamburgerology • In France, people eat approximately 500,000,000 snails per year • The first breakfast cereal ever produced was Shredded Wheat • There are about 100,000 bacteria in one litre of drinking water • Have A Tomato With Your Burger! When a source of Vitamin C (orange, lemon, grapefruit, strawberry, tomato, potato, etc.) is eaten with meat or cooked dry beans, the body makes better use of the iron in the protein food. - Tea can be beneficial to your heart. Studies have shown that active ingredients in tea can lower your chances of suffering from cardio vascular disease. - Black or Green tea, with or without milk, contains natural antioxidants that neutralise cell damaging free radicals. - If you drink it without milk or sugar, tea is 100% calorie and fat free. - Regular tea consumption may cut down the number of dental cavities you have. Tea has a positive effect on bacteria in the mouth. - On average tea drinkers consume just under 3 cups a day, and by the end of a year, that is 1,095 cups per person - enough to swim in. - The anti oxidants in tea mean that if you drink it daily, you are detoxing your body. - Tea contains half the caffeine of coffee. - New Zelanders love their tea steaming hot, but two thirds of the tea drunk in the United States is served ice cold! The Science of POM Wonderful Facts thanks to Lipton tea. For centuries, the pomegranate has been valued as a symbol of health. Could the legends have some basis in fact? In 1998, research began in an effort to get some answers. A number of top scientists in their fields, including a Nobel Laureate, are researching areas covering antioxidant activity, cardiovascular disease, circulation, cancer and others. To date, multiple, peer-reviewed studies have been completed and published, while a number of others are still in progress. The results have been positive. Research revealed that pomegranate juice contains a higher level of polyphenol antioxidants than other beverages, including red wine, green tea, cranberry cocktail juice or blueberry juice. These antioxidants are particularly effective at: * Neutralizing damaging free radicals. * Preventing oxidation of LDL cholesterol. * Oxidation of LDL cholesterol is associated with plaque build-up in blood vessels. * Preserving nitric oxide, a key chemical in the body for regulating blood flow and maintaining vessel health. (Can be purchased at Walmart - a little pricey - but good) CAFFEINE KICK! - HOW DO YOU GET YOURS? You can call it 3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6,-dione OR 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine (what a mouthful!), but what we are really talking about here is CAFFEINE... the most popular drug in the world. We consume caffeine in coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, cola drinks (and drinks like Mountain Dew too), and even mixed with some drugs. There are several sources of caffeine found in nature coffee beans, tea leaves, kola nuts and cacao pods. Pure caffeine is odourless and has a bitter taste. In moderation, caffeine can; increase alertness, reduce fine motor coordination, alter sleep patterns, cause headaches, and nervous tenancies. In massive doses, caffeine can kill you. But don’t panic yet – you’d have to drink 80 to 100 cups of coffee very quickly to succeed. And by the way – the typical withdrawal symptoms associated with caffeine are headache, fatigue and muscle pain. But how do you know how much caffeine you are taking in with each Cappuccino? Well here is the answer in milligrams per litre: • Long Black Coffee 1330 mg/l • Cappuccino 410 mg/l • Red Bull 328 mg/l V 325 mg/l • Instant Coffee 203 mg/l • Tea bag 187 mg/l • Pepsi 113 mg/l • Coke 101 mg/l Page 5 Niehaus News While “purified tap water” is arguably safer and purer than untreated tap water (depending upon the purification methods), a consumer should expect to receive something more than reconstituted tap water for the exceptional prices of bottled water. Natural Spring Water or Reconstituted Tap Water? Recent allegations against the Coca-Cola Company and its brand name of bottled water, Dasani, have publicly highlighted one of the biggest misconceptions about the quality of bottled water. Coca-Cola, advertising its bottled water as “pure, still water,” is now being investigated for misleading consumers about the true nature of the contents of its bottles. Rather than deriving its water from natural springs, Coca-Cola had actually been filling its Dasani bottles with purified tap water. If bottled water does not necessarily offer purer water than tap water, surely it provides a better tasting water product, right? The answer to this question is no. Bottled water does not always taste better than tap water. In an interesting study conducted by Showtime television, the hosts found that 75% of tested New York City residents actually preferred tap water over bottled water in a blind taste test. Of course, this problem of reconstituted tap water in Dasani bottles would not be so large if it was an isolated incident. Unfortunately, the process of bottling tap water is not limited to the Coca-Cola Company. In 1999, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) published the results of a four-year study in which researchers tested more than 1,000 samples of 103 brands of bottled water. These researchers found that, “An estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes further treated, sometimes not.” While taste is certainly highly subjective, this study shows that bottled water essentially holds nothing over tap water. In many cases, bottled water is no purer than tap water, and it may not even taste better. Standards and Regulations for Bottled Water Bottled water, because it is defined as a “food” under federal regulations, is under the authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) while the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)—under much stricter standards—regulates tap water. Thus, bottled water, depending upon the brand, may actually be less clean and safe than tap water. The EPA mandates that In one case, a brand of bottled water, advertised as “pure, glacilocal water treatment plants provide city residents with a detailed er water,” was found to be taken from a municipal water supply account of tap water’s source and the results of any testing, while another brand, flaunted as “spring water,” was pumped including contaminant level violations. Bottled water companies from a water source next to a hazardous waste dumping site. are under no such directives. Sleepiness or fatigue can: • Impair reaction time, judgment, and vision and decrease performance, vigilance, and motivation. Someone who has been awake for 18 hours has the same mental acuity of a person with a blood alcohol level of .05. • Increase the chance of being in an accident. A report by the US National Commission on Sleep Disorders found that driver fatigue contributed to over half of all vehicle accidents in America. • Cause problems with information processing and short-term memory. In tests of motor skills and memory, participants who slept 6 hours a night for two weeks made 11 times as many mistakes as they would with 8 hours of sleep. • Slow your body's ability to fight disease and repair tissue. When sleep is shortchanged, the human immune system also seems to nod off and produce fewer infection-fighting antibodies. • Cause "stress eating" and weight gain. A loss of sleep can lead to cravings of high-fat, very sweet foods. Appetites can also increase beyond the extra calories needed to stay awake. • Have a negative impact on long-term health. Chronic sleep loss might both hasten the onset and increase the severity of diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Your Tax Dollars When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300° C. The Russians use a pencil. Child and dependent care credit If you paid someone to care for a child or dependent so that you could work this year, you may be able to claim a child and dependent care credit on your federal income tax return. Claiming the credit would allow you to reduce your tax by a percentage of the amount of expenses incurred for child care services for a dependent under age 13 or for a dependent of any age who is incapable of self-care. The credit is intended to help cover your child-care expenses so you can work or look for work, and depending on your income, the credit could range from 20 to 35 percent of your qualifying expenses. The maximum qualifying expenses for the credit is $3,000 for taxpayers with one qualifying child and $6,000 for taxpayers with two or more qualifying children. If you receive dependent care benefits from your employer, the expenses you claim for the credit must be reduced by that amount. In addition, if you are married, both you and your spouse must be employed or searching for employment, unless either of you is a student or is mentally or physically incapable of self-care. Additional requirements also apply: • Your filing status must be single, head of household, married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er) with a dependent child. • The payments for child care cannot be made to someone you can claim as your dependent on your return or to your child who is under age 19. • You (and, if you're married, your spouse) must maintain a home that you live in with the qualifying child/dependent. Taxpayers using Form 1040 can use Form 2441 to verify the name and taxpayer identification numbers for care givers working for a child-care business and/or to report the social security numbers of individual providers. If you are filing Form 1040A, you must complete Schedule 2. Also keep in mind that if you pay someone to provide the care from your home, you may be considered a home employer and would have to pay employment taxes. If you would like more information on claiming the Child and Dependent Care Credit or more specific information pertaining to your child-care situation, contact the tax professionals at Kemper CPA Group. Page 9 Niehaus News NEW WAY TO PAY TAXES Well, for most of us, taxes are finally out of the way. We've paid what we owe, and with what's left over, we might even have enough to pay for a trip to the poorhouse! Doors Below, check out what one person did with his return; if this catches on, who knows, maybe one day we'll all be able to pay our taxes with things around the house! Thanks, and enjoy!
