Scholarship Reception
at Historic Las Tapias
Residence
by Nancy Clare Caponi
The historic Las Tapias residence, designed
by architect George Washington Smith, provided
a verdant setting for the annual Scholarship Reception on June 19th. President Cass Ensberg
presented certificates to the scholarship recipients.
Scholarship recipients: Carrie Carlson, Stephanie Manson-Hing,
Elizabeth Savage, Sonia Trujillo and Serina Zepeda
In addition to those pictured above, the following students received awards: Jose Ayala (Annual Fund scholar), Jodi Balster (Lutah Maria Riggs
scholar), Ruben Bravo, Kathryn Greenup, Chip Hubert, Do-Eun ‘Grace’ Jeong, Daniel Maslon, Adrian
Rodriguez, Mark Skovordko, Nieve Tierney, and Pei-en Yang. The students are pursuing studies in architecture and landscape architecture at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, Cuesta College, Otis College of Art
and Design, and the University of California- Berkeley.
Previous AFSB scholarship recipients Jacquelyn Cacan, Suzanne Kortz Tejada and Ian Miley shared
their career experiences with the audience. In coordination with the Scholarship Foundation of Santa
Barbara, over $1 Million has been awarded over the years. AFSB Scholarship funds provided a total of
$56,100 to students in 2014.
We’d like to thank our generous sponsors and wonderful volunteers who contributed time and talent to this successful event. Errol Jahnke and Marilynn Jorgensen graciously opened their beautiful Las
Tapias home and gardens for the award ceremony. Delightful fine wines were generously donated by
Wedell Cellars. UCSB’s Art, Design & Architecture Museum gave permission to reproduce the Lutah
Maria Riggs elevation drawings on the invitation. A special thanks to everyone who attended for their
support of AFSB’s scholarship program.

In the past year, AFSB had the good fortune to
add four widely experienced and dedicated members to its Board of Directors. Combined with the
efforts of many volunteers, these individuals have
contributed the required vision and leadership to
enhance and expand our programs and activities.
Melinda Gándara is an independent writer and
curator. A former archivist for the Architecture and
Design Collection at UCSB’s AD&A Museum, she
has lectured widely on California architecture and viFrom left: AIASB President Christopher Manson-Hing, Otha Cole,

and energy to our highly successful lecture series.
Bryan Pollard accomplished his studies at Hammons School of Architecture at Drury University, and
established his local practice in 1998. Bryan has been actively involved with BEEP for many years, reaching out to younger generations to share the excitement of architecture in local elementary schools. Bay Hallowell was an art museum educator, museum consultant, and adjunct professor of studio
art for thirty-two years at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Temple University, and The Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. An accomplished artist, Bay provides leadership with our art gallery.
Otha Cole has worked in philanthropic programs including sustainable living, education, and crosscultural coalition building. Otha revived and strengthened BEEP in recent years, forging connections
with local schools, revising curriculum and organizing volunteers.
As the current AIASB President, Christopher Manson-Hing provides coordination between the
two organizations.
