OCTOBER 2005
From the Editor: This yearly newsletter provides a vehicle for keeping in touch with all of you and an opportunity to
brag about our NSC men; something that we love to do. If you can’t tell by reading this newsletter, Leb and I are beyond
proud to be associated with all of you and our hearts are warmed that you stay connected and nurture your camp friendships. We also make an assumption that you enjoy reading about people that you knew when you were 12, if not please
let us know. We realize that most of you have extremely busy lives, so we appreciate any amount of time that you spend
actually reading this newsletter and hope that it is worth the read. We look forward to our paths crossing as we travel across
the country recruiting campers.
The United Nations Day Revisited event in Chicago
on Sept. 14th brings in over $200,000 for the Lou
and Renee Rosenblum Endowment ensuring that
we will continue to send minority kids to camp for
another year.
The collaboration of Alumni, Post Campers and current staff to
put on this event was so heart warming. Thanks to alumni MITCH
SCHWARTZWALD and mom ELISE SCHWARTZWALD for
generously donating the use of DISCOVERY DAY CAMP for our event. Additional thanks to ALAN COLE who procured
a Toyota Pruis at cost for our raffle and to JANNA CARROL FIESTER who donated all of the design work on the invitations. A big thanks to DAN LICHTENSTEIN who planned the day’s events just as seamlessly as he does it during the
summer. Over the course of the day more than 200 of our alumni, post campers and current campers participated in the
day’s events. Dan packed a summer’s worth of fun into a single day. Starting with an organized free period, followed by
a mini U.N. Day with cheers, events, tug-of-war and foot races then a mini Green/White Marathon with the culminating
fire building event. After a great dinner we gathered for a request night. Renee spoke to us via a video that was filmed
just prior to her death. On her parents’ behalf, Linda Rosenblum spoke about what the scholarship fund meant to them.
The evening request night gave the Brataslava brothers (CHUCK SHULMAN and JOE MENDEZ) another chance to get a
few laughs and for DON GIBSON to once again sing “All My Life’s a Circle.” We loved hearing JON SHERMAN, DON
GIBSON and PAUL SHEFCYK singing that old favorite “Ohio” and they never sounded better. LENNY BASS came up
with a new jazzy rendition of “Forest Green” that was a real crowd pleaser. We could have gone on all night. The hi-light
of the night was the Camp Kamaji camper and also the counselor who spoke about the impact that the scholarship fund
has had on their lives. Nothing was so poignant as hearing the girls talk about how camp has expanded their worlds and
opened up new dreams and goals including college. Prior to camp they had never ventured out of their neighborhoods and
now they were speaking in front of 150 people. One of the girls attends the University of Illinios, and has done volunteer
work in Costa Rica. She attributes all of these opportunities to her summers at Camp Kamaji where she learned of all the
opportunities awaiting her and developed the confidence to pursue them. She is the first in her family to go to college. Of
course Leb conducted his usual stalls prior to the drawing for the Toyota Prius. RICK FISHEL and brother MARK were
the lucky winners and wouldn’t you know they opted for the cash and gave HALF of the winnings back to the scholarship
fund. Silent Auction winners included Dr. Ray and Arlene Handler who were the high bidders for a long weekend at the
Lebby’s guest house. We tossed in a trip to the Grand Canyon to sweeten the deal. They could have come anytime for free
but now that they have paid premium for the opportunity they’ll be sure to come.
Leb and I have been very humbled by the generosity of our community. From the alumni who anonymously donated the
Prius, to MIKE SIMON’S family (The Carl and Faye Simons fund) who offered a matching grant of $100,000. We still
have an opportunity for matching grants until Dec. 31st amounting to $150,000. We are ecstatic that we can keep the
program going due to this outpouring of support for our cause. All who supported this great cause give true meaning to
our North Star creed: “There is a destiny that makes us brothers none goes his way alone. All that we bring into the
lives of others comes back into our own.”
FAMILY CAMP 2005
We love it when alumni come back to camp for Post Camp.
Alumni are low maintenance and “with the program”. They
come equipped with guitars and camp stories to share with
children. If they don’t like the program they plan their own.
It’s a no-brainer family vacation. We do all the work and
you have all the fun. Just to reassure you, we haven’t served
beenie weenie or turkey tetrachloride in over 25 years so it’s
safe to come back. Family Camp is a little like Club Med.
The biggest decision one makes in the week is whether to
water-ski, climb, horseback ride, sail, tube down the Namekagon, mountain bike on the old logging trails, fish, etc. etc.
etc. Our families never have to worry about their next meal
or entertainment. Our able Post Camp staff see to that. Our
tennis pro not only offers tennis clinics and a tennis tournament, but he is a professional musician. Mike’s band comes
up from Minneapolis to play for our lakeside happy hour. We
gather a fun loving crew of camp counselors from around
the world to help run our programs. By the end of the week
the kids are hooked and demand that they return. We love
to see the alumni kids making friends just like their dads did
years ago. It’s a great way to keep those camp friendships
alive despite the distance and when wives become friends
it seals the deal.
Contact our office for details if your family would like to attend
Family Camp we’ll get you on our mailing list..

STAFF HIT THE TEN YEAR MARK AT CAMP IN 2005
JEFF MCCORMACK: Jeff or Big Dog as we call him at
camp spent his summers on Spider Lake with his grandparents at Pine Crest Resort. Curious about the camp he came
10 years ago to ask about a job and never left. You could say
that camp played big in his life since he married our secretary and now is dad to one year old Lake, “The Enforcer”.
Jeff started out as a counselor, then Junior Village Director
and Land Sports Coordinator and now C.I.T. Director and
Program Supervisor. Jeff is helping us grow our staff and
we’re so glad to have him with us.
MIKE SWIRYN: He has camping in his blood with his
grandparents on one side founding North Star and the other
side founding Tamarack Day Camp in Chicago. Mike is a
graduate of the University of Michigan in Global Studies
and was our Intermediate Village Director. Having Mike at
camp adds to the continuity of the place and every once in a
while we’ll see a glimpse of Lou in him. Mike is currently
working and living in Melbourne, Australia and we’re sure
the recipient of Brad Holland (former V.D.’s) hospitality.
ALEX HELDMAN: We’ve known Alex since he was a
little guy and can’t believe that it’s been 10 years already.
Having spent many years as a camper, and going through the
C.I.T. program, Alex is now one of our best counselors. His
campers benefit from Alex’s intellect and interest in politics.
Alex is a sophmore at the University of Michigan and we
hope he has a few more summers with him.
ROBBY RUTKOFF: Known as “The Rabbi” Robby has
also been at camp since he was a little guy. We often use him
as the poster boy for the homesick camper. He and Alex came
down the same path at camp and both attend the University
of Michigan. Robby has definitely given back what he has
recieved as a camper being one of the best Junior Village
counselors in America (defined by me).
We have the potential for a large group of 10 year men
next summer.
WHAT’S NEW AT CAMP?
Our caretaker Tom Brokaw was busy this year as we continue
to update our site. When campers arrived to camp this summer they saw a completely renovated Mike Hall. Also added
was an additional deck on the basketball side providing a
new outdoor venue when we’d like to take the entertainment
outdoors. J-3 and J-1 have been renovated with new log
siding and J-3 has large deck for picnic seating. The little
cabins formerly known as The Trailor Park are one by one
getting rebuilt to provide extra staff housing. It is also note
worthy that we tackled the age old campaign promises to
do something about the low pressure country toilets. When
it came up this year we worked with Presidential candidate
BRAD MILLS to fulfill his campaign promise and we replaced all the toilets with high pressure models. No more
flushing instructions needed. In the Senior Village the Villa
Club House was replaced with a new log cabin. Most visable to everyone however is the large scale landscape project
that we completed in front of the lodge and around the tennis courts. We now have an official entrance to the office
designated paths to the lodge and a terraced hillside in front
of the lodge where we do announcements. We also finished
an erosion project on the path to the tennis courts and Mike
Hall. Archery was moved near riflery to allow for a full size
athletic field. We have a full slate of projects for this fall and
winter as well. McCabin in the Senior Village will get a face
lift and we will have an additional deck on the front of the
lodge for extra picnic seating. The office and kitchen will
get new log siding and we are doing some updating in our
kitchen. Luckily Tom has a good set of woolies. He works
all winter on these projects and seems in his glory when he
can be building something.
DATES FOR THE SUMMER OF 2005
We are having a brisk recruiting season. If you have interest
in this camping season for your son call our office A.S.A.P
1ST SESSION: JUNE 19TH -JULY 15TH
2ND SESSION: JULY 16TH - AUG. 11TH
8 WKS: JUNE 19TH-AUG. 11TH
WE’LL KEEP THEIR CAMPFIRES
BURNING.
RENEE ROSENBLUM: Our beautiful first lady
of North Star passed away on July 3rd at the age
of 86 after a long battle with a pulmonary illness.
Right up until her death she was engaged in life
and interested in other people.
Telephone calls to check on her
always resulted in her turning the attention
away from herself and on to the caller. Despite her shortness of breath and difficulty
speaking she would wear herself out holding up her end of the conversation. This
was how Renee lived her life. She will be
remembered for making people feel special and at that she
was brilliant. Looking at this classy woman one would think
that she had a charmed life. For Renee that was a choice she
made. Having lost an infant son and having another son who
was developementally delayed and living in a home, Renee
bravely put her best foot forward and few if any at camp knew
of the sadness in her life. She seemed determined not to let
these events define her. She raised a wonderful daughter and
doted on her grandson, volunteered as a docent at Milwaukee
Art Museum, and was summer mom to thousands. She had
so many friends and one needed to plan months in advance
to get a dinner date. A tireless example in how to stand by
your man, Renee devotedly took care of Lou in his illness
prior to his death. People like Renee give us something to
aspire to. I think all who knew her will carry a little of her
in them. She left many people who will keep her memory
alive and strive to follow in her example. We’ll keep her
campfires buring and carry on in her memory.
DAVID MARGULIS: David Margulis, St. Louis native,
died July 7th, 2005 in Berkeley, CA, of pneumonia. David,
born August 7, 1932, grew up in Clayton, Missouri but his
second home was North Star. Starting in the first season in
1945 and for several years thereafter as he was a camper,
counselor and tripper. While guiding a canoe trip on the
Namekagon River, David was struck by lightening and lost
his eye sight temporarily. This would later lead to his work
for the blind with the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and
the Chicago chapter of the American Foundation for the
Blind. He was a passionate Cardinals baseball fan, veteran
post camper, jazz lover, and an active member of Jazz Unites
(a Chicago organization dedicated to producing affordable
public jazz concerts, workshops, and classes). As executive
for Oglivie and Mather in Chicago, David was always happy
to discuss with us how to market camp. David is father to
alumni CHARLES MARGULIS. We will always remember
David driving to camp in one of his assorted sports cars. His
memory will live on.
ALUMNI PURCHASE CAMPS:
ANDREW SCHWARTZ IS THE NEW OWNER OF
ROOSEVELT CAMPS IN BOWERSTON, OHIO. Andrew was a camper, counselor and tennis pro at North Star
and worked in his family’s health clubs in Chicago prior
to purchasing the camps. Roosevelt, the boys camp, was
founded in 1918 and was attended by Don Lebby (Leb’s dad),
Drew Lebby (Leb’s brother), and also Leb. Firebird, the girls
camp, was founded in 1954. We wish Andrew the best of
luck. He’s got one successful season under his belt.
CLIFF LISSNER TAKES OVER THE REINS FROM
TOM AND PAM ADLER AT CHIPPEWA RANCH
CAMP. Cliff is a graduate of Columbia University in Chicago with a major in film. He was a camper, counselor and
Village Director at North Star. When Tom was looking for
an Assistant Director we recommended Cliff. He spent two
summers as Assistant Director prior to purchasing Chippewa.
Tom and Pam will continue on at Chippewa, having all of
the fun but none of the hassles. Cliff will not run the camp
alone; his new wife Lisa brings along her talents working for
years in public relations in Chicago Mayor Daley’s office.
We predict a great future for both of them. We couldn’t be
more proud of Cliff and we look forward to working with
him as a collegue.
TOM FELDMAN started a small Day Camp in Boulder,
CO. this summer with plans to expand next summer....

they were known as The Kinsmen. They took their little rivalry from the tennis courts to the basketball courts to the golf
course to the
bowling alley until they
wore each
other out.
They also
went to Turks with BARBARA CHERNOV to reminisce
all the dinners there waiting hours for the food to arrive. This
time they were the only ones in the place with Marge’s full attention. Casey actually bumped into a woman at Anglers that
he dated while working at camp. CASEY and BOBBY take

know that he would still be there 35 years latter..... ADAM

a hedge fund, and is the proud father of “three blonde-haired
sports-oriented kids.” “Whenever a nephew or niece has a
birthday, we invariably break into the NSC birthday song.
Man, we LOVED that camp.”... Cousin, ADAM REISS, is
a CNN producer who recently worked out at the ranch with
President Bush. “Who woulda thunk it? The kid spent an
entire summer with grape bubble yum on his face.” Adam

the news and is on most big assignments where news is happening. Not a trace of bubble gum and quite handsome.....

in 1997, worked three years of law firm life, then went to
work with his parents in the family’s real estate investment
business. Ben has had the chance to travel extensively and

ARI BASS is also involved in the family business. JUSTIN BASS has moved back to Chicago from California......
BRIAN GROSSMAN surfaced after many years and here
is what he has been
up to--in a nutshell.
He was living and
working in Greater
China for 10 years
after completing law
school in Oregon.
Leb & Brian “Groz” Grossman
He spent 1 year in
Taiwan, 6 years in Shanghai and 3 years in Hong Kong.
Learned Mandarin Chinese and ate lots of “different” food.
Was lawyering for the first 3 of those 10 years and then set
up a software company with 3 other guys with operations
in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong w/ 130
employees. The company sold to a Nasdaq-listed company
and after working for them for a year he came back to the
states and took 1.5 years off—drove around in his truck in
BC Canada and Pacific NW, back to Asia to do some races
(100km ultra trail race in Hong Kong and a 4 day adventure
race in Borneo, Malaysia), then some R&R going to places
in Asia and Australia traveling. He settled in San Francisco
a year ago and he is currently a Partner and Director in a
startup company deploying state of the art voice recognition
technologies for handheld device application to educational
testing and learning. After selling his company in China,
Brian decided to get fit and hooked up with a team to train
for a race called the Trailwalker held every November. 900+
teams of 4 doing 100km on a trail; over 28,000 accumulated
vertical feet. All four team members must do the entire race
and stick together (not a relay)—so the training and team
element is critical. They powerwalk the ups and run the
downs and flats. Brian did TW 4 years in a row, and the last
year they were very competitive coming in 8th overall and
1st place as a Mixed Team (i.e. 3 guys and a woman). They
recently did a training race in the Alps to prepare for TW this
November in Hong Kong. Brian is often in Breckenridge
where his parents are so one might catch him there as well.
He is still known as “Groz” all these years from a nickname
that started in J-7. ...... MIKE GREEN will be getting married
hopefully in New Orleans this spring. He continues his work
with the Center for Environmental Health. His most recent
project is getting the lead out of kids lunch boxes. Parents
can find information on how to test for lead in their children’s
lunch boxes at home at www.cehca.org/lunchboxes....STEVE
DINKIN lives in San Diego, CA...MARTY RIPS lives about
4 blocks away and their kids are in the same school and often
on the same sport teams...KEN SARNOFF is a sports agent
in Chicago working with his brother JIM SARNOFF. Ken
and his wife just welcomed their first child, a girl, Katherine
Mallory....DAVID DREYFUS is a lawyer living in L.A. and
he and his wife Caroline had their first child in April. Her
name is Alexa Sydney Dreyfus. He sings “Good Morning
Mr. Zip” to her in the morning...TIM SCHROER tell us
that life in MN is good. He is in his 11th year at St. Olaf
College. He ran the Grandma’s Marathon this summer and
has been traveling. He sent us a great picture of himself on
a camel in Eygpt. He attended Chelsea Gibson’s graduation
party teaming up with some camp friends.....MATTHEW
KASSEL lives in Darien, CT and he and his wife are expecting their first baby. We’ll not forget when Matt’s mom,
who worked for professional baseball, got tickets for Matt’s
entire cabin to go to the All Star game in Mpls. with Leb...
