Fontevraud Abbey (or Fontevrault Abbey) is
located in the village of near Anjou, France

Overlooking the near nine hundred
year-old Fontevraud Abbey, which has just
been refurbished recently, it is hard to
believe the miserable history behind it.
Fontevraud Abbey (or Fontevrault Abbey)
was founded by the preacher Robert of
Arbrissel, The first permanent structures
were built between 1110 and 1119. The
abbey is located in the village near Anjou,
France. Although the abbey was a double
monastery, with both monks and nuns on
the same site, Robert of Arbrissel still
insisted that the leader of the abbey
should always be a woman and also
appointed Petronille de Chemille as the
first abbess. She was then succeeded by
Madilda d'Anjou, the aunt of Henry II of
England. This attracted many rich and
noble abbesses over the years, including
members of the French Bourbon royal

family. Henry II's wife, Eleanor of
Aquitaine, became a nun here while
Isabella d'Anjou was the abbess.
During the French Revolution, from 1789
to 1799, the abbey was dissolved. The last
abbess Madame d'Antin, died in poverty in
Paris. On 17 August 1792, a Revolutionary
decree order evacuation of all
monasteries, to be completed by 1
October 1792. The abbey became a
prison from 1804 to 1963, in which year it
was given to the French Ministry of
Culture.
The restoration of Fontevraud Abbey was
finished about 2006 under the direction of
French architect Lucien Magne.

If proposal (c) is adopted, It's hard to imagine that a WLAN
Antenna need to be put up on the steeple of nine hundred
year-old Fontevraud Abbey. Therefore, the proposal (c)
was quickly abandoned.
If proposal (b) is adopted, the distance limitation should be
less than 100 meter for safety regulations. A cable with
the length of more than 100 meter will cause the signal
reduction or data loss, and Fontevraud Abbey occupies 25
-30 hectares and with about 500M in length and 500M in
width. Therefore, the proposal (b) was given up.
If proposal (a) is adopted, the solutions of ADSL2, VDSL or
VDSL2 can be implemented. But there is certain limitation
for each solution.

The date rate of ADSL2 upstream is 1-2Mbps (too slow).
The data rate of VDSL is 25Mbps within 0.8KM.
The data rate of VDSL2 is up to100Mbps.
This is why VDSL will be the solution for this critical
challenge in this case.
The Solution
Internet and Phone Service via VDSL
The Challenge
The Fontevraud Abbey occupies 25 -30 hectares and with
about 500M in length and 500M in width. The main
buildings are about 3-4 story high. It has a very famous
hospitality in France and also would like to provide internet
service to tourism and staffs. However, the old historic wall
never allows deployment of any "cables" to destroy the
beauty of the original structure. Besides, the Fontevraud
Abbey only has 1 month to set up the network architecture
during the slack season. The challenge of this project is to
integrate the telephony needs into SIP solution and also to
coordinate the vast number of professionals and workforce
who work on this wonderful but complex site.
The requirements of Fontevraud Abbey project are (1)
never deploy any cables (2) The network architecture
needs to be settled down in less than 1 month.
Three proposals were considered in this case: (a) use
original telephone line to allow the network signal to go
through (b) use original power line to allow the network
High-speed Internet access via ADSL2+ is the solution for
the Fontevraud abbey. To redirect the bandwidth to all
staffs and visitors, SP3508A is used to connect with
ADSL2+ broadband router, and establishes extended
connections, with multiple SP3501AS, over the existing
phone wiring infrastructure. Besides, SP3508A is equipped
with built-in POTS/ISDN splitter, and can connect with
legacy PBX to provide normal phone call service.
With each location equipped with SP3501AS to connect
telephone and PC, phone and Internet services can be
provided via the single VDSL CPE device.
Each VDSL connection supports data rate up to symmetric
25Mbps. It provides abundant bandwidth for Internet
access and internal communication as well.
In some private areas, such as employee and interpreter
offices, SP3501AS can be used to connect with wireless
Router (SP916 series), to expand the user allowance up to
10-15 users.
In some open spaces, such as lobby and tourist
information center, SP3501AS can be used to connect
with Hotspot Gateway (SP913 or SP1910) to expand the
user allowance up to 100-200 concurrent users.

The first stage of the project is to install VDSL backbone to
support IT service for employees and to provide Internet
access for VIP visitors during private and public events.
After the first stage, the Abbey will have a new telephony
system to support its SIP.
