The 2013 event was our best attended with 264 guests. It was also Heartstrings Community Foundation’s® best fundraising effort netting $90,000 to provide employment for adults with developmental disabilities! The lovely Hallbrook Country Club was decorated as a spring garden with amazing balloon creations. Many professionals from The Heartland Qualatex Balloon Network Chapter donated their time and talent to create an elaborate floral theme throughout the building and a fun backdrop for photos, which were donated by Photography by SarahMarie. The social hour and silent auction began at six o’clock to the cool jazz of the Jose Samayoa Trio. It was a lively social hour with bidders competing for the 70 auction items that included tickets to sporting events, lovely gift items and sports memorabilia. As the guests were seated for dinner, the 2013 Heartstrings Video premiered to encourage business partnerships. Board President, Tom Tadtman, worked with a talented team to create and edit the video. His team included Brad Lang, Shawn Wright, Rick Raglow and Mike Snell. They all put in many volunteer hours to produce this wonderful video that can be viewed on Heartstrings website www.heartstringscf.org or at the YouTube link http://youtu.be/QpVw2eFeaRQ. Corporate table sponsorships included AT&T, Assurant Employee Benefits, Bank Business Advisory Council Gordon Docking David Lindstrom Peggy Lowe Dean Oskvig MaryAnne Simons Brad Stratton Kristina Wyatt of Blue Valley, Beyond Marketing, Centrinex, Demdaco, ExxonMobil, HNTB, A.L. Immediately following the video, Dennis Higgins auctioned 3 live auctions including the Heartstrings Fund-A-Need continued on page 2 1 Gala Event continued from page 1 auction, a week-long stay in a Colorado Guest House (donated by Jeff and Marjorie Adair) and a Guided Fly Fishing Trip to Roaring River (donated by Dennis and Bunny Higgins). The presentations of the Key to Independence Awards were made to one of our long-term business partners New York Life Advanced Markets Network. Accepting for NYLAMN were Terri Turner and John Begley (both HCF® board members) and Patrick Colloton, who was the first CEO to participate in the HCF Pilot Project. Each of these people spoke of the great benefit to their company through their partnership with Heartstrings Goody Delivery,® Custom Gift Baskets and participation in HCF events. Employees taking time to pose for the camera include (front row) Nickie, Liz, Erin, Michaela, Rachel, (back row) Ryan, Matt, and Pat. The Individual Key to Independence Awards were presented to Gayle Packer – HCF Immediate Past President and Tom Tadtman – Current HCF Board President. Both of these individuals generously and cheerfully advocate for Heartstrings Community Foundation and the adults with developmental disabilities that HCF employs. Everyone is extremely grateful to both Gayle and Tom for their enthusiastic spirit and dedication to the HCF mission. We were very proud that 16 HCF employees attended the event and enjoyed socializing with many of their friends from Goody Delivery and other jobs! Eleven Attending this year’s event were Exxon Mobil friends Barb Sipes, Sheri Anguiano, and Becky Maher. Everyone enjoyed a spectacular meal and dancing to the fabulous music of Private Stock. Before the evening was over the HCF employees helped draw the winning tickets for the Heartstrings raffle – 3rd prize ($300) and 2nd prize (iPad) were both won by lucky volunteer Roseanne Fischer, who generously donated the $300 back to HCF! The 1st prize of the Sports Ticket Package was won by Kathryn Lewis, who allowed the KU Basketball tickets to be auctioned off! Gene Holland (HCF Volunteer Coordinator) led the experienced and delightful volunteers for the evening from SACS and the Heartstrings Staff. We are immensely grateful to all of them for their seamless Anne presents Gayle and Tom with their awards. coordination of the many detailed items of this event. The HCF Fundraising Committee was small but mighty this year and included Anne Hull, Reta Bailey, Todd Decker, Jana Kuhn, Sarah Fentiman, Laura Kearns, Denise Lynde, Tom Tadtman, and Terri Turner. We welcome newcomers with open arms! Call HCF 913-649-5700 or email Anne Hull at [email protected]. The evening was energetic and lively from beginning to end and certainly made an impact on Heartstrings Community Foundation’s ability to provide employment in the community for adults with developmental disabilities. While redesigning their website, we visited On My Own® several times. In every instance, their employees were friendly, happy and exuding a sense of pride that can only come from such a supportive environment. We appreciate having had the opportunity to create a website that better features their mission and vision. Choosing Heartstrings to assemble and deliver holiday gift baskets to our clients last year made an immediate impact. Some clients made a point to express their appreciation for choosing such a thoughtful gift from an organization that does so much for the community. It was fun to visit the gift basket “shop” and pick out the goodies and wrapping. We plan to do it again this year! If you are truly looking to make a difference in your community, we highly recommend partnering with Heartstrings Community Foundation! Beyond Marketing: Andy Dickhut, Account Supervisor, Larry Hayes, CEO, and Brian Hanson Director of Operations joined us at this year’s Gala 4 New Partnership brings New Opportunity to Shoppers H appy Spring to all of our dedicated Heartstring’s supporters and donors! We are so excited about all of our great happenings at all three stores! They both have done a fantastic job of decorating the stores and welcoming customers. Stop by anytime for a meet and greet with them. Deb McQuay, manager of On My Own, just celebrated her third year with HCF. We have a great team to help you with all of your shopping needs. Heartstrings has begun partnering with The Swapping Company. The Swapping Company is a great way to trade in some of your consignment-worthy clothing while helping out HCF. Jen Taylor founded The Swapping Company as a way to give back to various non-profits after her daughter was diagnosed with leukemia and her family benefitted from a non-profit. On May 9 we co-hosted a Ladies’ Night Out Celebration with The Swapping Company in honor of the first anniversary of A New Look. On Wednesday, May 8, eight Heartstrings employees and two staff attended Push Day in Topeka, along with over 1,000 others from around the state, to further educate the legislature and the executive branch on how our services work now and why we believe including them in the medical model of insurance companies is not in our best interest. There still have not been direct or clear answers to several questions. • What benefits are expected from Managed Care Organizations (MCO’s) administering Medicaid funds? • How can money be saved by contracting very large for-profit insurance companies to handle personal services that are not categorized as medical needs? • Why is the State of Kansas declining the opportunity to receive additional federal Medicaid funding that could help relieve the waiting list? • How do the MCO’s expect to get more people with I/DD competitively employed which was stated as a goal? • How will they keep current services the same while saving money? • How will the MCO’s give people more choice? By the time you read this article, the session will be over but you can still voice 8 Blake and Eric greeted the Governor upon his return from lunch your thoughts and opinions and questions to the legislators and the Governor before the next regular session in January 2014. There are quite a few legislators that are in favor of a carve-out of non-medical I/DD services, even though it is an uphill battle. Thank you to all of you who have been writing and calling so far. Over one hundred families have been directly and personally impacted by HCF. If we consider the growth of Heartstrings Goody Delivery, which now serves more than 80 businesses, it is obvious that Heartstrings’ employees and staff have made a significant impression on thousands of people in our community. A person who has experienced a lifechanging event often wishes for the opportunity to make that experience possible for others. It is possible for you to impact future generations by planning your gift to insure the future of your favorite charity (hopefully, Heartstrings Community Foundation). Remember, as Bob Hope once said, “If you haven’t any charity in your heart, you have the worst kind of heart trouble.” Planning options to consider: • Asset Bequests are probably the simplest of planned gifts to a charity by including the charity as a beneficiary in the will. A donor can designate property, a specific amount of money or a percent of the residue. • Charitable Gift Annuities (CGA) are agreements between a donor who makes a gift of cash or property and a charity who agrees to make fixed payments to the donor for life in exchange for the gift. • A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) a donor transfers cash or property to the CRT, which is a tax-exempt trust that can sell the property without paying capital gains tax. The CRT makes payments for a lifetime or term of years and then distributes the remainder to charity. • A Charitable Lead Trust (CLT) is a taxable trust. A donor who wants to give a gift to a charity for a period and pay as little gift or estate tax as possible may select this tool. Each year the CLT reports its income and takes a deduction for the amount it distributes to charity. Any excess is subject to tax. • Life Estate Reserved is a way a donor can execute a deed transferring a house or 10 • farm to a charity. In the deed, the donor retains a “Life estate” that allows the donor to occupy the property for life. The donor agrees to be responsible for the maintenance, insurance and taxes on the property and receives an income tax deduction for the remainder value of the property. • A Pooled Income Fund (PIF) allows a donor, who wishes to leave property to a charity but also needs to supplement his/ her income, to give cash or property to the charity. The charity issues shares of its pooled income fund to the donor. The donor also receives income tax continued on page 11 Make us first on your list when you donate P lease remember our retail stores when you are down-sizing, right-sizing or just needing to make space for new things! Consignment-worthy clothing, personal accessories, home accessories and furniture are all welcome. Clothing and personal accessories may be taken to Sacks on Santa Fe, 7916 Santa Fe Drive, in downtown Overland Park during store hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Home accessories and small furniture pieces may be taken to A New Look, 9548 Antioch, Overland Park, during store hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. These stores have the appropriate storage area for the items. For larger furniture pieces, call the office (913-649-5700) Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and speak to Deb or Bunny. As always, we will give you a receipt for your tax records! Options for Charitable Giving continued from page 10 8844 W. 95th Overland Park, KS 66212 913-649-3600 deduction for the present value of the remainder interest at the donor’s death. • A Bargain Sale benefits a donor who has an interest in supporting a charity but cannot afford to gift an entire property. The charity purchases the property at a bargain price or agrees to accept the donor’s mortgaged property. The donor receives a charitable deduction for the difference between the fair market value of the property transferred and the cash received in the bargain sales. Planning charitable giving requires assistance by professional estate planners. If any of the above options seem to fit your situation, we would very much like to assist you in accomplishing your goal! Please call the HCF Development Office at 913-649-5700 Ext. 26 for more information. www.fastsigns.com/20 11 12 Two of our Partners Get Creative with their Fundraising O ur partners at Wells Fargo held two different in-office fundraisers for Heartstrings: a Jeans Day and a Cookie Contest. On March 20th we were presented a check from Wells Fargo in the amount of $854. Thank you to the Wells Fargo advisors and associates who coordinated these fundraising events. Applebee’s International also organized a Jeans Day in January and raised $330. Your efforts to support Heartstrings are greatly appreciated! If your company would like to buy out a Goody cart, please let us know. We will be very happy to arrange that! Patrick’s Team returns with an empty cart and that’s a good thing. 13 Employees work hard to make sure we are ready for business Employees learn the benefit of staging so the customer finds the item they desire. Making sure the windows are clean & attractive Employees learn the importance of maintaining a clean store to attract customers. With a fully stocked cart on hand, it’s time to meet the customers. Weighing the dog biscuits for sale – a very popular item on the Goody cart. Packaging items for the Goody Delivery cart is an important part of the day. 14 15 From The Heart Of The Executive Director F In thinking about all this, the thought that keeps coming to mind is I am not promised tomorrow so make every minute count; don’t waste time or money. Make sure that where I am spending my time and money is making a difference in people’s lives. ifteen years ago I made a career change because of personal frustration…evaluated my life and the impact I was making in other lives and felt that I had gone as far a s I could go. I found myself just doing a job and maintaining; this was not satisfying for me. My motto has always been “Life is too short. We spend more time at work than with our loved ones so we need to enjoy what we are doing.” With the encouragement and support of my husband, I went out on a limb and started doing something that was totally different but challenging and fun. After about two years a friend of mine, Sally Helvey, introduced me to Anne Hull. Long story short, I made another career change. I have been working at Heartstrings Community Foundation since September 4, 2001. Earlier I said that Heartstrings is my dream job. During this evaluation process, I have realized that Heartstrings is not a dream anymore; it is an enjoyable part of my life. Yes, I still have dreams; and one of those dreams is to be instrumental in Heartstrings growth. The first step in that process is to expand to the Missouri side and then . . . nationally, offering a unique employment opportunity to adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities all over the world. My position at Heartstrings is not only challenging and fun; but, with the help of a great team, we are making a difference in many peoples’ lives. We are able to offer a service that without Heartstrings would not be offered to the staff, employees and the community. If you have been a supporter of Heartstrings for a while you have probably heard me say this before…Heartstrings is my dream job! So this is where you come in…What will be your legacy? Where are you spending your time and money? Are you making a difference in people’s lives? Do you want to? Events in my life over the last year have given me reason to think about what and how I am doing, where I have been and where I want to go? What will be my legacy I leave behind? What will my Eulogy say? Legacy: What is a legacy? A gift by will especially of money or their personal property. Eulogy: What is a Eulogy? A commendatory oration or writing especially in honor of one deceased. Good News…you can. Heartstrings is always looking for people to volunteer their time, donate their personal property and donate financially. You can make a difference in people’s lives by contributing to Heartstrings Community Foundation. If you are interested in making Heartstrings a part of your Legacy, give me a call at 913-649-5700. I would be glad to discuss with you ways you can make a difference. Bunny Higgins MS, Executive Director Sentimental Journey Antique Mall, L.L.C. This year’s ride will be Saturday, September 28, at the adjoining beautiful Missouri Century farms of Birchfield and Robbins Families, located at 296 N.E. HWY AA, Kingsville, MO 64061. The gates open at 9 a.m. and the ride begins at 10 a.m. The fabulous Summit Hickory Pit Barbeque will again generously donate lunch. There will also be prizes, a raffle and wonderful items for sale. Many of us loved the sterling commemorative bracelets last year and look forward to a new charm for this year’s event! Even if you don’t ride, it is a lovely lunch in the country with fun friends. Register by September 16th at www.heartstringscf.org or call Valie at 816-590-3215. Big or small, we move it all!
