New Venue and Bidding Process
Brings New Success to Annual Gala
“W
hat a fun event!” “That was a
great show!” “Such a wonderful
time!” Those are some of the recent
comments about Heartstrings In Bloom
held April 26, 2014. Heartstrings’ majorfundraising event was the most successful
event we have ever hosted, netting
$105,000. Nearly 300 guests arrived at
the Sheraton Overland Park to an elegant
evening of entertainment, dining and
dancing. The new auction software created
a buzz of activity as we all learned to “bid
by text”! George Guastello, CEO of Union
Station, served as our spirited Master of
Ceremonies and Dennis Higgins, auctioneer (owner Menagerie Auction), expertly
led our guests through the live auctions.
We are all grateful to George and Dennis
for their assistance as both the silent and
the live auctions are very important
components of the event.
Heartstrings In Bloom’s first Presenting
Sponsor, VSR Financial Services, was
introduced to our guests. Maureen
McAnarney shared that VSR Financial
Services is a full-service securities broker/
dealer founded in 1985. By design, VSR
is a small firm providing individualized
service and support; and, their highest
priority is building and maintaining
long-term relationships. Their office has
certainly built a strong relationship with
their Goody Delivery® Team and with
Heartstrings. We were very pleased to
award VSR the Corporate Key to Independence Award. Eileen Quint graciously

accepted and spoke of the benefits their
partnership with Heartstrings has
provided VSR.
Becky Price was the individual recipient of
the Key to Independence Award. She has
been a long-term, dedicated volunteer with
Heartstrings and is greatly loved by all of
us! Becky’s talents are many–most recently
exhibited in the re-upholstering services
she provides for Heartstrings’ donated
furniture.
The highlight of the evening included
the style show runway featuring six

board members and business sponsors. The style show was
presented just before the Fund-A-Need Auction and featured
Blake Docking and Katheigh Degen (HCF board member)
of Twin Financial — Runway Sponsor; Mary Cox and Dean
Oskvig (HCF Business Advisory Council) of Black & Veatch; Pat
McGinty and Maureen McAnarney of VSR — Presenting Sponsor
for Heartstrings In Bloom; Beth Sipes and Dave Lindstrom (HCF
Business Advisory Council); Spencer Roberts and Raleigh Lang
(former HCF board member) of Twin Financial — Runway
Sponsor; Liz Demopoulos and Tom Tadtman (HCF Board
Member) of Oracle. Everyone looked extremely stylish in
clothing selected from our Heartstrings stores.
The Fund-A-Need auction raised $30,000 with an extraordinary
lead-off bid of $5,000 from Lindy Waldrop-Porter. Amazingly,
her bid was followed by another fabulous $5,000 gift from
Trina & Tom Henke. As the crowd became more familiar with
text–bidding, the bids came rolling in to reach our
goal! Dennis auctioned, in the traditional manor,
four live auction items, which included two
beautiful furs donated by Lindy Waldrop and
two fabulous vacation options — two Guided
Fly Fishing Trips donated by Dennis & Bunny
Higgins and a Colorado stay in a lovely home
donated by Jeff and Marjorie Adair.

Say Hello to Summer
with the New Wares
that are Blooming at
all of our Stores
Amanda Henning, Director of Retail Sales
After such a long winter, we are excited
to present our newest additions to On My
Own® and A New Look. We have added
wonderfully creative and durable accessories that add a fun flare to your backyard
parties for this summer season. Both
stores have added the latest in silicone
lids, including the newest line of flowered
silicone coasters and wine glass markers.
In addition, On My Own has a colorful
array of Melamine platters, dishes and
matching glasses to make any gathering
a glorious success.
Our other store, Sacks on Santa Fe, has
stocked their racks with great spring and
summer accouterments ready to fill your
closets this sunny season! We have also
been very busy with the Downtown
Overland Park Partnership Local Life
Night. Downtown Overland Park businesses stay open late on the third Friday
of every month and offer an interactive
shopping experience. On these evenings,
Sacks on Santa Fe has partnered with
Nigus Chiropractic and Acupuncture
and Ashley Nelson Studios. Dr. Nigus is
on hand to offer complimentary massages
to get you ready for loading up on our
great merchandise by the armful. Ashley’s
representative will have products from
Skinceuticals, focusing on a different
product each Local Life Night. These
customizable products will get your
skin looking radiant, adding to your
summer style.
All three stores recently held their 2nd
annual Customer Appreciation sale in May.
Managers and staff donated fresh baked
cookies to add to the Tea Forte line of
iced teas (available at On My Own). The
refreshments were served to our guests
along with an exceptional store-wide sale.
We are so lucky to have great customers
and to be able to show our gratitude in
this special way.
There are so many exciting new opportunities and events being planned.
Make sure to keep an eye on our website,
www.heartstringscf.org and our Facebook
page…and please remember to add visits
to all three stores to your summer to do
list! Believe me you will be very happy
you did!!

Thoughts from
the Development
Office
By Anne Hull
A
s this newsletter deadline approached,
I began to consider what message I
would like to share with the Heartstrings
Community. So many feelings and
thoughts flooded into my being: gratitude,
teamwork, trust, fulfillment, pride and so
much more. Pride in the amazing creative
and cooperative spirit exuded throughout
the Heartstrings staff. This has been an
extremely challenging year in many ways,
and our developmental growth as a result
of these challenges is so amazing! The
team is united and has learned very
valuable lessons. We are so very grateful to
Heartstrings’ generous donors and
sponsors. The support of the community is
the key to making Heartstrings Community Foundation a successful and valuable
commodity. Our event planning team is
small but mighty, working all year to
create Heartstrings In Bloom and Team
Heartstrings for Hospital Hill Run; and we
hope to welcome some new members. We
are energized by new volunteers and joyful
for the continued commitment of our
regular volunteers.
The road ahead of us is bound to be uphill
and fraught with potholes and dangerous
curves, but the Heartstrings Community
Foundation team – including you –will
succeed! It will take all of our concerted
efforts to make Heartstrings’ opportunities
available to more deserving families.
Thank you for what you do and for what
you are going to do.
Below are some of the inspirational quotes
that we value and try to incorporate into
our days. If they are helpful to you we are
glad to share!
“You don’t have to be great to get
started, but you have to get started
to be great.”
Les Brown
It’s amazing how much gets done when
it doesn’t matter who gets the credit!
The road to success is
always under construction.
“Nothing great was ever created
without enthusiasim.”
Ralf Waldo Emerson
“People begin to be successful
the minute they decide to be.”
“Positive attitudes create a chain
reaction of positive thoughts.”
Harvey Mackay

ExecutiveDirector:
Director
As I write this, I wonder just how many people are reading
our newsletter…
I believe that Heartstrings Community Foundation is
providing a unique service for our employees, staff, family
members, businesses and the community. Our vision is to
expand our services and offer communities all over the world
this unique opportunity. In order to do this, we need help
from many of you. Over the last 13 years Heartstrings has
grown to a million-dollar company with the majority of
the same…Board Members, Staff, Volunteers, and Funding
Sources. It is time to EXPAND OUR RESOURCES…and
that is where you come in.
There are numerous ways you can help us accomplish this
task. So, I encourage you to look over the list and find a way
you can become more involved. Please share this list with
your family, friends and co-workers.
•Our Board of Directors is looking for new candidates to
serve on the Board (If not you, maybe you know someone
who would be interested in applying.)
•We have several committees that have openings (Financial/
Budget, Fundraising, Business Development, Nominating,
Long-Range Planning and Personnel)
•We are in need of a parents
group. (Someone to get it
started and encourage
participation.)
•We have been short staffed
since November (Do you know
someone who would be interested?)
•We are in need of regular Volunteers (Can you or someone
you know volunteer?)
Heartstrings employs 47 adults with developmental disabilities. Each of those 47 have a support network, some bigger
than others, but even if all 47 only have 2 people and those
2 people only have 2 that is 188 people to draw from. Now
we all know that our pool is much larger than that. And yes,
I know we are all busy. Some of you work; some of you are
already involved in Heartstrings. I am simply asking you
to evaluate what you can do to help us.
Please call me to discuss how you can help us expand
our resources for the future of Heartstrings. (I guess this
is one way of finding out how many people are reading
the newsletter.)

on June 6 and 7. Then he was selected as one of the
22 athletes from Kansas to participate in the USA
National Special Olympics competition, which was

place in the 25m backstroke, received a Silver medal in
the 50m backstroke, and the 4x25m relay team placed
5th. He also competed in the 50m freestyle. The trip
to New Jersey also included some sightseeing around
New York City. CONGRATULATIONS, Eric!!!
THANK YOU
TO ALL HEARTSTRINGS STAFF!!
A huge thank you for everything our staff has done in the
past six months to keep Heartstrings moving while there
have been open staff positions! Everyone has picked up
extra duties and people while staying positive and focused.
Anne and Bunny have even relearned Goody Delivery,
packaging and the stores’ routines. While there has been
some stress here and there, all of us have learned,
relearned and grown, making Heartstrings stronger.

Get Involved–
Become a
Volunteer
N
on-profit organizations always need
help from volunteers; and, Heartstrings is certainly no different. Whether
you only have a couple of hours available
or prefer to focus on a certain event, please
let us know what works best for you. We
have a regular group of adult volunteers
like Jana Kuhn, Denise Lynde, Sarah
Fentiman, Ken Gillespie, Tina Greenbaum,
Dennis Higgins and Becky Price that
provide not only a specific talent but also
their time to help us with our events and
activities. From print to photography and
reupholstery to baking dog treats, each one
has become part of the Heartstrings family.
Did you know that Heartstrings offers
volunteer service hours for students? We
have worked with Rockhurst High School
and St Teresa’s Academy for nearly 10 years
and would happily accept other student
volunteers. Email our Volunteer Coordinator, Gene Holland at [email protected] for more information.
Perhaps assisting our store manager on
Saturdays would fit your schedule or
assembling gift baskets during the holiday
season might sound more appealing. You
might want to help change the window
display. The opportunities are endless, so
we would encourage you to make a
decision today to get involved.
