responsibility of athletic director in
1992. In 1996 he stepped down from
his coaching post to dedicate his fulltime efforts to his duties as athletic
director.
In eleven seasons as the Hampden-Sydney football
coach, Bush recorded a winning percentage of nearly
.600. He twice earned ODAC Coach of the Year honors,
including 1987 when the Tigers won the ODAC Championship. In addition to the on-field accomplishments by his
teams, Bush coached four players who earned Academic
All-America recognition. He also served as H-SC’s tennis
coach from 1989 to 1992 and in 1991 was named the
ODAC Tennis Coach of the Year.
Bush served a two-year term as President-Elect of the
ODAC from 2000 through 2002. In addition, he has served

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
Hampden-Sydney College
Hampden-Sydney is one of the South’s outstanding liberal arts
colleges. Nestled in the gently rolling countryside of south-central Virginia, H-SC is the oldest of the country’s few remaining
men’s colleges.
Hampden-Sydney is committed to
the belief that a liberal arts education
provides the best foundation not only
for a professional career, but also for
the great moral and intellectual challenges of life. Students learn that the
pursuit of truth is a lifelong endeavor,
requiring clarity and objectivity of
thought, a sensitive moral conscience,
and a dedication to responsible citizenship.
As the College’s mission statement says, liberal education aims
to assist students to free themselves
from ignorance, malice, prejudice,
and superstition; from the tyranny
of intellectual selfishness; and from
impotence in judging the claims and
values of experts. It teaches students
to gather evidence patiently; it educates them to write and speak with
force, precision, and clarity; and it
encourages them to seek refreshment
and inspiration in the fine arts.
success of its program is a dedicated faculty, over 90% of whom
hold earned doctorates in their fields and all of whom devote their
principal energy to teaching. The student-faculty ratio is 13:1.
STUDENTS RUN THEIR OWN
ACTIVITIES
Student life is considered an integral
part of the education process at
Hampden-Sydney. Students conduct their
own affairs through a student government
elected by them and composed of members of all classes.
A student-enforced honor code is a
Hampden-Sydney tradition that continues
to flourish, upholding the atmosphere
of personal integrity, trust, and mutual
respect essential to the operation of a
dynamic academic community. Responsibility for maintaining the system is taken
so seriously that students enjoy one of the
freest campuses in America, where books
and bikes can be left unattended and professors can leave their classrooms during
tests and exams.
Student activities are numerous and
diverse, including publication of a newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine
and operation of a radio station and volunteer fire department along with a wide
variety of clubs and other organizations.
Whether they like drama, music, classical debate, hiking and canoeing, or
even electronics and short wave radio, students can find campus organizations that cater to their
interests. Many student
programs involve a strong
commitment of service to
the community, such as the
tutoring program for area
high school students.
The social life of the
College is centered around
11 national fraternities and a
strong organization of independents. Concerts, mixers,
movies and a variety of
unusual programs are
planned and carried out
through a student-run college activities committee.
Affiliated with the
NCAA and competing in the
Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Hampden-Sydney
fields varsity intercollegiate
teams in football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, golf,
lacrosse and tennis.
The athletic department offers a comprehensive program in
intramural activities, with thirteen sports throughout the year, in
which over 80% of the students participate.
ONE QUALITY REIGNS
SUPREME: LEADERSHIP
From the beginning, the College’s
intent has been to educate the whole
individual “in an atmosphere of sound learning.”
The College’s history
speaks eloquently of the
powerful and enduring
character of the ideals
of self-reliance and service, and of its own
two-hundred years of
commitment to the value
of self-reliant, disciplined
intellect in public life.
In proportion to its
enrollment,
Hampden-Sydney consistently is in the top five
percent of all colleges and
universities in graduates
listed in “Who’s Who in
America.”
Since 1776, the College has provided the
educational experience
necessary to produce leaders in every field of endeavor, including
one U.S. President, 12 senators, 32 congressmen, 12 governors,
well over 100 state representatives, and a host of ministers, attorneys, doctors and judges.
The College offers the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of
Science degrees, preparing students for direct entry into the world
of business or for further professional training in law, medicine,
business, government, teaching or the ministry. Basic to the

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
2005 Season Preview
Outlook
Tiger Attack
The 2004 season began with the
Tigers ranked among the top
five teams in the nation after
ten games, yet the young
Hampden-Sydney squad faltered late in the season. Despite
finishing 8-5, the 2004 senior
class tied a Hampden-Sydney
College lacrosse record, previously broken by the 2003 seniors,
with 44 victories in their respective
Sean
four year careers. The Tigers
McChesney
missed the NCAA national tournament last year for just the second
time in the past seven years and will
eagerly look for their return to the
playoffs. Hampden-Sydney will be a
strong contender in the ODAC and will
make a push for another run in the
NCAA Tournament. H-SC returns a host
of veterans with something to prove in ‘05
as well as another outstanding group of
newcomers. Leading scorer Vince Smith
returns for his second season as a Tiger
along with his high school teammate, three
year starter, and current team captain Sean
McChesney. They will be joined by second
year captain and two-time all-conference midfielder Ryan Fassnacht. Second-year starters
and sophomores Michael Via, William Shell,
and Thomas Jennings were solid contributors
as freshman and have greatly improved their
physical strength in the offseason. Defensively, senior goalie Jeremy Bull looks
to return to his All-American form
of 2003 and will count on first
team All-ODAC defenseman Will
Albright as well as returning
starters John Pritzlaff and Ryan
Burns. Seniors Kevin Burke and
Dalton Grein return at midfield
and have competed very aggressively in fall workouts. Junior
attackman Eamon Thornton also
returns after overcoming injury, and
will add a strong physical presence
on the field. Coach Rostan is most
exited about the team effort and very
positive attitude the Tigers displayed
in off-season practice and training.
Leading the offensive attack will be three-year
starter and senior tri-captain Sean McChesney
along with two-year starter Michael Via.
McChesney is one of Hampden-Sydney’s
quickest and strongest offensive players.
Scoring 14 goals and adding four assists
in 2004, McChesney has been named a
team captain for the ‘05 season and
will be counted on to be a leader and
a major scoring threat. Sophomore
Michael Via had a great start to his
career, scoring 11 goals along with eight
assists during his freshman campaign
and will be looking to make himself into
one of the most dangerous players in the
ODAC. Another returning starter that had
success as a freshman is William Shell.
Shell netted five goals and chalked up eight
assists for a total of 13 points. Junior Eamon
Thorton, returning from injury, brings the most
commanding physical presence to the field and
will be counted upon in a regular rotation. Freshmen Kelly Mattie, Dan Sullivan, and Ryan Niland
played well in fall workouts and will also look to
contribute.
Tiger Midfield
Holding down the midfield will be four-year
starter, two-year captain, and two-time
All-ODAC honoree Ryan Fassnacht
along with returning leading scorer
Vince Smith. Fassnacht is proven
as one of the best face off men
and defensive midfielders in
the nation. Despite the fact
that he has not been a goal
scorer, Coach Rostan believes
he is a legitimate player-of-theyear candidate at the conference
Vince Smith
or national level. Joining Fassnacht will be junior Vince Smith,
sophomore Thomas Jennings, and
newcomer Ryan Harrington. Smith led
the team in total scoring with 17 goals
and 17 assists for a total of 34 points last
season and will be the team’s field general.
Thomas Jennings returns to the starting lineup
for his sophomore campaign after a standout
freshman season scoring 14 goals and adding two

assists. Ryan Harrington will enjoy his first season
in a Hampden-Sydney uniform after transferring
from Whittier College. Harrington, an extremely
well-conditioned athlete, will have an immediate
impact on the program. Other impact players
will be seniors Kevin Burke and Dalton
Grein. Both Burke and Grein are totally
unselfish players who will do anything
to help the team win. Freshman Mark
Miller also showed strong ability to
contribute early along with Kelly
Mattie who is a former High
School All-American. From
a defensive midfield
standpoint, Coach Rostan
was particularly pleased
with the tenacious fall
play of sophomore
Middleton Smith,
freshmen Kyle
Frazier, and A.J.
Cox.
showed great promise in the fall are Will Ashwell,
Colin Dunn, Alex Elkins, Chip Farrar, Alex Pritzlaff, James Provensano and Bill Zimmer. Zimmer
is a sophomore transfer while the others are true
freshman. The Tiger program prides itself in
strong team defense and this may be the deepest
group in recent history.
Tiger Goalkeepers
Honorable Mention All-American goalkeeper Jeremy Bull returns to the net for his
senior season and will be counted upon
to lead the team back to the NCAA tournament. Bull recorded 121 saves in
698 minutes of play last season. Bull
will be supported by three outstanding
young talents including sophomores
Greg Frankoski and Scott Russell
along with freshman Phil Hage.
Tiger Defense
2005 senior captain
Ryan Fassnacht
and First Team AllODAC honoree Will
Albright will be teaming up with returning
starter John Pritzlaff
to anchor a formidable
Tiger defense. Albright
shut down several of the
top players in the nation
last season while Pritzlaff returns for his junior
campaign after leading all
long sticks with 61 ground
balls in ‘04. Senior Ryan
Burns saw action in 11 games last year while finishing out the last six games of the season as a starter.
Burns adds experience to the team defense while
sophomore Chase Williston will add his speed and
strength to the veteran core. Several newcomers
were outstanding in fall workouts and have already
shown the ability and work ethic to contribute immediately. Freshman Colin Weiss, one of the best conditioned athletes on the team will make an immediate
impact as a probable starter. Other newcomers that
Tiger Schedule
Hampden-Sydney will be more than prepared for the regular season after visiting Duke University for a preseason
tournament where they will match up
against Division I opponents such as St.
John’s, Hofstra, and Duke, as well as the
number one preseason ranked team in
Division III, Salisbury University. The
Tigers will kick off regular season play
on Saturday, February 26, 2005 vs. Mary
Washington at 1pm. H-SC will be tested
early in the season as the Tigers take on
four nationally ranked opponents, three
of which are ODAC rivals, throughout
the season including Gettysburg, Washington &Lee, Roanoke, and Lynchburg.

The Vail Lacrosse Tournament, in its 30th Year, is the oldest tournament
in the sport of lacrosse, with well over 1600 men and woman participants. The men’s division is divided into three individual tournaments.
There are “open”,”senior”(34-45 years of age) and “Masters”(over 45
years of age) divisions.
The Merrill Lynch Team finished fifth of twenty teams in the Open
Division of the oldest and largest lacrosse tournament in the sport.
Paul Landaiche (HSC ’93), a Portfolio Manager for Merrill Lynch
(Jacksonville, FL), organized, coached, and enlisted sponsorship by his
Merrill Lynch employer. The team combined nine Hampden-Sydney
Tigers with representative athletes from 5 other colleges and universities. Paul will again be organizing the team for its third year of entry
in 2005.
Brad Johnson (HSC ’89, not shown in photo) participated in the
Senior Division of the Vail Tournament. Brad captained the 1989
Hampden-Sydney ODAC Championship team and was the ODAC

Thacher Worthen, Water Polo, Lacrosse, 1990-93
2004 H-SC Hall of Fame
Worthen earned All-America and Southern Conference Co-Player of the Year in water polo in 1993. He led the
Southern Conference in goals despite the fact the Tiger team finished 1-16 in conference competition, which included
scholarship programs like Richmond, Arkansas and Dayton, along with non-scholarship Washington and Lee. Worthen
played “hole man” which was toughest position to play in water polo as the center of the offense. A four-year starter
as a defenseman in lacrosse, he earned USILA Honorable Mention All-America honors and All-ODAC honors in
1993. His forte was “full-field transition” as he was virtually impossible to stop. He once single-handedly cleared
the ball through defending national champion Princeton’s “ride” or press nine times. Worthen went on to receive his
MBA from Vanderbilt University. He is now a Corporate Director of Marketing for Coca-Cola, Inc., in Birmingham,
Alabama.
Rob Bonaventura, ’83
2002 H-SC Hall of Fame
Rob Bonaventura is the fifth all-time leading scorer in Hampden-Sydney lacrosse history
and he rates in the top-six in goals scored and assists for his career. From 1980 to1983,
Bonaventura racked up 104 goals (sixth-best all time) and recorded 70 assists (second-best
all-time). In 1982 he registered career numbers with 42 goals and 36 assists (second-best
all-time in single season) for 78 points, and is regarded as one of the best
all-around individual seasons in Hampden-Sydney lacrosse history. He still holds
the Hampden-Sydney
record with 11 goals
against William and
Mary in 1982. He
earned Honorable
Mention All-American
honors in 1983 and
was a First Team
All-ODAC honoree in
both 1982 and 1983.
Bonaventura, a political science major while
at Hampden-Sydney, is

John Gibson ‘82
1994 H-SC Hall of Fame
The top scorer in Hampden-Sydney’s lacrosse history, John Gibson was the first lacrosse
player to be inducted into the H-SC Hall of Fame. Sixteen seasons after his graduation,
Gibson still holds the H-SC scoring record with 202 career goals and 266 total points. He
also ranks third on the Tiger career list with 64 assists.
As a senior in 1982, Gibson set a school record with 56 goals, leading the Tigers
to a 12-4 record and the College’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III Lacrosse
Championships. He earned All-ODAC honors in 1981 and 1982, and was an All-America
in 1982. Gibson was also selected to participate in the prestigious North-South College
All-Star Game.
Gibson is currently the Executive Vice President for the Ellis-Gibson Development
Company in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Jeff Jackson ‘88
1998 H-SC Hall of Fame, 1990 USA Team
Jack Barber ‘89
2000 H-SC Hall of Fame
One of the top defensive backs in H-SC’s football
history, Barber was a three-time first-team All-ODAC
selection on the gridiron. His 16 pass-break-ups as a
freshman in 1985 is still a H-SC record, as are his 35
career break-ups. He was in H-SC’s top ten in tackles all
four years, including a career-best 66 as a senior. Barber
returned punts and kickoffs all four years as well, and
his 94-yard kickoff return in 1987 against Guilford is
still a record. As a lacrosse player, he was a first-team
All-ODAC midfielder in 1989, helping the Tigers to
an 11-3 record and NCAA berth. In addition, he
was named an alternate for the North-South All-American game and an All-State selection. His senior year
lacrosse stats included 17 goals and 7 assists.
Ted Chambers ‘83
2000 H-SC Hall of Fame
Although he never
played varsity lacrosse
at his prep school in
Baltimore, in his
lacrosse career at
Hampden-Sydney Ted
Chambers started all
four years on the
squad. Like his team,
never before recognized as a national
lacrosse power, Chambers quickly matured
into one of the
country’s best defensemen. Along with John
Gibson ’82 (H-SC Hall
of Fame Inductee), Chambers was H-SC’s first lacrosse
All-American, earning honorable mention honors in
both 1982 and 1983. He was a key member of H-SC’s
1982 team, which posted a 12-4 record, a first-ever
national ranking (No. 8), and H-SC lacrosse’s first
NCAA tournament appearance. He capped his lacrosse
career as one of the few Division III players to start in
the 1983 NCAA College All-Star game.
While at H-SC (1984-88) midfielder Jeff Jackson netted 157 goals and was named All-America two times. The 1988 First Team All-America and
ODAC Player of the year went on to become one of the most successful players nationally. In 1990, Jackson was the youngest member of Team
USA that won a world championship in Perth, Australia.
As the five-time captain of the Chesapeake Lacrosse Club, Jackson earned 1991 USCLA Co-Player of the Year honors along with lacrosse great
Dave Petriemala. In 1994, Jackson was the sole USLCA Player of the Year. In his final season of field lacrosse, he captained the highly select Team
Toyota. Jackson also captained the Baltimore Thunder of the Major Indoor Professional Lacrosse League. He was named All-Pro from 1991-1993
and the teams Most Valuable Player in 1991 and 1992. He retired in 1995 as the team’s all-time leading scorer.
Jackson presently works as an Senior Loan Officer for Southern Trust Mortgage in Baltimore, Md. Jeff and his wife Maria have two children,
Kevin (4) and Lauren (6).
