Celebrating San Angelo Mid-Year Report T he end of June marked the half-way point in the Chamber year. I almost made it through the June 9 Chamber luncheon before Chad and I welcomed Ella Houston Elkins early on June 10, weighing in at 6 lbs 13.5 ounces. We are all doing well, and appreciate all of your good wishes. At the June 9 monthly luncheon, Angelo State University Stacie Elkins President Dr. Joe Rallo highlighted ASU’s newest programs, $100 Chairman of the Board million in construction coming over the next five years, and the outstanding efforts underway to grow the University’s enrollment. Sponsors Concho Educators Federal Credit Union and Performant enabled that event, and Ridgway Florist made possible a wonderful networking session at Business After Hours on June 23. We appreciate our member support and participation in these mainstays. Leadership San Angelo graduated its 26th class last month, and Edward Carrasco received the Bob Diebitsch Leadership Alumni Award. Peggy Arnold was recognized for her many years of outstanding service to the program. To date, 707 individuals have benefitted from the program. The exciting announcement June 19 that San Angelo mainstay Hirschfeld Industries and newcomer Martifer Energy Systems have announced a joint venture to manufacture components for wind turbines to serve North American markets is great news for our area. And finally, the third annual Showdown in San Angelo drag boat races is now in the record books, and we’d like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, and participants for making the event bigger and better. Please make note of some of the activities that you might want to place on your calendar: Please register soon for the 6th annual West Texas Legislative Conference on August 13. The topic will be agriculture. Business and industry leaders and elected officials from throughout West Texas will join us to examine the current and future status of agriculture in our region and the U.S., as well as its economic impact. Sponsors are still being solicited if you’d like to help underwrite this event. Business After Hours will be held on Thursday, July 30th this month, and members will be among the first to see the new Midnight Rodeo club at 2581 Sunset Drive. Business advising appointments and brainstorm marketing sessions with trained business counselors from ASU’s Small Business Development Center will take place at the Chamber office July 13 and July 27. Schedule your appointment by calling 655-4136, or call Phil for more information. Applications for the 27th class of Leadership San Angelo will be available later this month. Contact Sandra Pomroy in the office to inquire about the 2009-2010 program. Attend and spread the word on the “last Friday” of the month tour of the military firefighting equipment, complete with windshield tour of Goodfellow AFB, on July 24. Call the Chamber office at 655-4136 to register. Thank you for your support of the Chamber and our community. We won’t have a Membership Luncheon in July. Enjoy your summer vacation! This win/win partnership strengthens both industries and solidifies San Angelo’s growing reputation in the wind power industry. The press release distributed June 19 said it perfectly: “This joint venture brings together the expertise of Martifer Group in the manufacturing of wind power components, and the local footprint and extensive experience in infrastructure fabrication of Hirschfeld.” With site preparation recently completed, construction has begun on the $40 million plant site on Old Ballinger Highway. The first stage of construction should be complete in one year, with an expectation of employing 225 locally and producing 400 towers annually by the year 2013. Ground Breaking Partnership – Breaking ground for the start of construction, and celebrating the joint venture between Hirschfeld Industries and Martifer Energy Group, are, from left, Victor Vescovo, Director, Hirschfeld Industries; Richard Phillips, President, Hirschfeld Industries; Dennis Hirschfeld, CEO, Hirschfeld Industries; Jorge Martins, Co-Founder and Vice CEO, The Martifer Group; and Pedro Denis, Executive Director, Martifer Energy Systems. Vice President, Marketing & Recruitment By the first week of July, the Chamber position overseeing marketing and recruitment for the community will be posted, and job descriptions and application procedures will be available to anyone interested. For additional information, please contact Phil Neighbors, 655-4136, or [email protected]. Standing Standing--Room Room--Only Crowd Attends Legislative Town Hall Meeting State Representative Drew Darby and State Senator Robert Duncan respond to questions during a Town Hall meeting at the Visitor Center last month. Duncan and Darby reviewed the highlights of this year’s legislative session, and discussed issues that were not fully resolved, including the reauthorization of the Texas Department of Transportation. July 2009 Action Report From the Convention & Visitors Bureau Tribute to Elmer Kelton San Angelo’s own Elmer Kelton has published 47 novels and 13 non-fiction books in the Western genre. Three of his books have won the Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the Western Writers of America have awarded him an unprecedented total of seven spur awards. In recognition of Elmer Kelton’s outstanding contributions to literature, a life size statue of Elmer will be placed inside the new Tom Green County Library when it is completed in 2010. Local artist Raul Ruiz was chosen from among 10 other bronze artists and commissioned to do the piece. The goal for this project is $85,000, and your help is needed. Donations are being accepted through the San Angelo Area Foundation, and if a donor contributes $3,000 they can receive a 9” bronze bust of Elmer, also done by Ruiz. This is a numbered, limited edition piece. Donations of $7,500 will receive a 12” bronze version of the actual statue that will be placed in the new library. I really appreciated how easy it was to navigate and find out all that San Angelo has to offer. I’m currently at Goodfellow AFB and initially dreaded coming here because I thought I wouldn’t have anything to do. The website proved me wrong and gave me a list of things to fill my weekends that I never would have known were there by just driving around. Liz Feight The Chamber offices will be closed on Friday, July 3rd in observance of Independence Day. We will re-open on Monday, July 6th at 8:30 a.m. The Visitor Center will be open on July 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and regular weekend hours on the 4th and 5th. Welcome New Chamber Members!
