COMPETE AT TRANSPLANT
GAMES THIS SUMMER
For many, the biannual Transplant
Games offer the chance to feed their
competitive side, for others they are
an opportunity to recapture a sense of
“normalcy,” and for others still, they
are simply an opportunity to connect
with far-flung friends from all over the
country.
For Kim Scadlock, one of Team Iowa’s
managers since 2010, the Transplant
Games are all of that­—and so much
more.
“It is great for those who have had
a transplant to be able to compete
against those who have had a similar
experience,” she says. Kim’s son
Beckham is a heart recipient. “But more
than that, the Games are meaningful
in a way that is hard to put into words.
It is so much more than an athletic
competition.”
This aspect of the event the Transplant
Games recognize themselves, describing
the week-long competition as: “More
than an athletic event, the Donate Life
Transplant Games highlight the critical
importance of organ, eye, and tissue
donation, while celebrating the lives of
organ donors and recipients.”

Medicaid Services have certified
IDN to function as the single

also serves as the tissue recovery
agency for the state.

donor, I ask that you take it a step
further and be certain that you have
made your intentions known to those
closest to you­­—those who may be faced
with the important task of ensuring
your wishes are honored.
Imagine if one of the donor
family members featured in our
#FACESOFDONATION campaign
hadn’t known the wishes of their loved
one. Or consider how it would have
impacted one of our recipients if the
life-saving organ they needed wasn’t
made available because the family of a
potential donor didn’t know their loved
one’s wishes.
We all have the potential to save or
enhance another’s life by making the
decision to become a donor. But let’s
not stop at joining the registry, let’s
make sure we tell others about our
decision.

Kim says the Games are inspiring for all involved. The Scadlocks
were able to meet their son’s donor family at the Games in 2010, the
first year Beckham competed. Kim says it was an impactful experience
and an example of the value of the games.
“It was touching to watch Beckham participate with his donor
family,” Kim says. “They were able to see their child’s heart beating in
his chest. It was incredibly fulfilling for both families.”
This year’s games will be hosted in Cleveland between June 10 and
15, and Team Iowa will send a delegation of around two dozen athletes
and more than 40 who will cheer them on. Athletes will compete
in everything from basketball and volleyball to darts, poker, trivia,
ballroom dancing and more. But Kim reiterates that it is about more
than the Games.
“It’s a chance to connect and for the athletes to be surrounded by
those who have had a similar experience,” she says. “For many athletes
it is powerful to be in a situation where they feel just like everyone else.”
By competing in the Donate Life Transplant
Games of America, our Team Iowa athletes honor
donors and donor families, while celebrating life.
The team consists of athletes and support
members. Our athletes have received an organ,
bone marrow, tissue or corneal transplant or are
a living donor. We are always thrilled to welcome
new members and would love to have more people
join the team! To participate as an athlete
in the Games you must meet the following
requirements:
• Have received an organ, tissue, bone marrow
or cornea transplant (regardless if you are
taking anti-rejection medication or not) or
you are living donor.
• Transplant occurred at least 9 months prior
to the start of the Games.
• You are in healthy condition and your doctor
has signed a medical waiver allowing you to
participate.
• You have signed a form stating that you
meet the above requirements.
• You have completed an application form and
background screening.
