STANDISH-STERLING COMMUNITY SCHOOLS Arenac County Fourth Class District No. 1 3789 West Wyatt Road Standish, Michigan 48658 ECRWSS POSTAL CUSTOMER December 2015 Non-profit Organization U.S. Postage Paid ROYAL OAK, MI 48068 Permit #792 Standish-Sterling School News Learning for All Standish-Sterling Elementaries Learn About Drug Prevention Several times during the month of October, Standish Elementary third graders were visited by Deputy Rachel Vallad of the Arenac County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Vallad’s visits provided a valuable curriculum based upon the RAD (Resist All Drugs) program. The program is funded by the ACCT (Arenac County Canine Team) and is designed to define drugs and examine their dangers. This program also recognizes the negative consequences of peer pressure and presents the students with several strategies to handle difficult situations. At the end of the program, each third grade student was given a RAD t-shirt and a variety of other RAD items. A sincere thank you to Deputy Vallad and to the ACCT for educating our students about the importance of resisting all drugs. Sterling Elementary’s third graders have been learning about the dangers of illegal drug use. For the past month, Deputy Rachel Vallad has visited Mrs. Robinson’s and Mrs. Gibson’s classrooms to present the R.A.D. program, which stands for “Resist All Drugs”. As a result, the students have pledged to stay healthy and drug free. On Friday, November 20th, the students were able to meet Deputy Sprague and Sonic. Sonic is a special dog who has been trained to detect several different illegal drugs, and can also follow the scent to find missing people, or criminals trying to escape capture. A huge “thank you” goes out to the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department for involving our school in their important work. NEW MUSIC TEACHER IN THE ELEMENTARIES I don’t think I have ever, in nine years of teaching, enjoyed my first two months of school as much as I have enjoyed these! My name is Natalie Smith and I am so excited to be serving the students of the Standish-Sterling Community Schools as the new elementary music teacher. As many of the kindergarten through fifth grade students might have already told you, I am very excited to be back in the school district after graduating from SSC in 2001. After graduation, I attended Alma College, where I earned my Bachelors of Music in Music Education in the Spring of 2005. After that, I taught music at a small parochial elementary school in East Tawas for six years. I was hired in 2012 by Hale Area Schools as the K-12 music teacher which included general music, band, and choir where I taught for three years. I am now thrilled to be back in this community with my husband to raise my three young boys in this district and be closer to our families as well! I have really enjoyed reconnecting with people from my past, and getting to know their children, and we’ve only been in school for two months! My approach to music is that music-making should be fun for students and give them a chance to express themselves without being judged on their abilities. My focus is making music! We sing a lot in our music classes, but we also have opportunities to play instruments, make connections with literacy, and create our own music at times! We have already begun with learning about our composer of the month, so feel free to quiz your upper elementary students on George Gershwin and Ludwig van Beethoven. I am very excited for my first concerts in the high school auditorium in December, where I look forward to meeting the parents and community members of Standish-Sterling! High School News HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS NEED TO PAY CLASS DUES! In an effort to eliminate the need for class fundraisers, all high school students pay class dues of $10 per year. Class dues are used to defray the cost of decorations and supplies that each class uses throughout the year. In their Junior year, the class is responsible for putting on the Prom, so this means that the Junior Class pays for all decorations, party favors, food, and the DJ for Prom. It is helpful if class dues are paid before the class plans the Prom. The big expense for each Senior Class is the yearbook fee… each year the Senior Class pays for the extra pages in the yearbook that are devoted to senior pictures and senior activities. Other expenses for Senior year include Senior Luncheon, Awards Reception, and graduation decorations. Senior year is quite an expensive year for parents, so it is recommended that dues be paid in full ($40) prior to the start of Senior year. Parents may send in class dues with their student at any time. Remind your child to ask the Class Advisor for a receipt and keep it with your records until graduation! Many parents make one payment of $40, but paying $10 per year is also welcomed. You may mail a check for dues to the high school, drop off cash payments at the high school office, or send it in with your student. Be sure to note your child’s name and graduation year on the check or envelope. Make checks payable to “Standish-Sterling H.S.” Class of 2016: Class of 2017: Class of 2018: Class of 2019: Advisors are Mrs. Gehlmann and Mrs. Neid Advisors are Mrs. Server and Ms. McKinnon Advisors are Mrs. Walderzak and Mr. T. Fegan Advisors are Mrs. Milkowski and Mrs. O’Keefe We thank the parents and guardians who support the activities that we plan for students throughout their four years of high school! Standish-Sterling Choir students are busy!!! The Fall Concert on October 20th went great and the Christmas music is showing signs of being very special this year. Some of our middle school students are working on a rendition of “Footloose” to audition for the Standish-Sterling Middle School Talent Show and the whole choir will do this number at Spring Concert. Many of our choir students, both Middle School and High School, are already preparing to perform at the Solo & Ensemble Festival in February. The high school baritones are getting ready for a trip to U of M to sing with the Men’s Glee Club at Male Vocal Arts Day. If you are interested in hearing some beautiful singing, please come to one of our performances this Christmas season. The high school choir will be featured in the Dow Gardens Christmas Walk in Midland on December 11th. They will be singing from 5:30 – 6:10 pm at one of the stopping points along the Walk. These students will also be sharing their talents at the Elementary Schools with the band, putting on Christmas assemblies on the 17th. Some of our middle school choir students will be singing during the intermission of the Arenac Choraleers Concert on Sunday, December 13th in the SSC Auditorium. Concert begins at 4 pm. Our choirs will have their Christmas concert on the 15th of December at 7pm in the high school auditorium. A variety of styles and titles will be presented, along with holiday favorites like ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’, ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ and ‘Jingle Bell Rock’. A Big THANK YOU to everyone who attends the concerts and supported us with the fundraiser again this year! We appreciate it very much! THANKS!!! Lucky Winners Drawn at P/T Conferences Congratulations to the following parents who attended this Fall’s Parent-Teacher Conferences held at the high school and are the lucky winners of a turkey from Family Fare: Michelle Christian Ashley Prahin Doreen White (courtesy of Standish-Sterling Central High School) STUDENT COUNCEL HONING LEADERSHIP SKILLS The H.S. Student Council has been busy this month honing their leadership skills! First, our sophomore and Junior members attended the Tri-Valley Conference Leadership Summit in Frankenmuth and met with student leaders from other Tri-Valley schools. They networked with other students, exchanged ideas, and discussed student activities that work well in their schools. The following week, twenty-two of the Student Council members attended the Fall Leadership Training Institute sponsored by the Michigan Association of Student Councils. The students spent the day working on Goal Setting, Organization of Event Planning, Team Building, and Communication Skills. All of the students agreed that that training will help them become better leaders here at SSC! Both days provided excellent opportunities for our students to meet and work with other student leaders from across the state. SSC Athletic Booster Club News We would like to congratulate the SSC Cross Country team for their outstanding season! We are so proud of all of you! If you are interested in purchasing athletic stickers for your vehicles, please contact any of the board members, and we can get them ordered for you. Lastly, we would love to announce that the SSC Athletic Booster Club has received an amazing monetary donation from Globe Fire Sprinkler Corporation. With this donation we will be able to help so many more clubs, sports and students. Thank you so much! Happy Holidays from all of us to all of you! GO PANTHERS! Powderpuff Football Raises Money for Charity We raised $604 for Charities and this year’s recipients were: Arenac County Animal Shelter and Arenac County Sheriff’s Dept K-9 Unit. Congratulations to the winners - SENIOR CLASS! Underage Drinking Did You Know…….Youth who start drinking before age 15 years are five times more likely to develop alcohol dependence or abuse later in life than those who begin drinking at or after age 21 years. Alcohol use by persons under age 21 years is a major public health problem. Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth. Although drinking by persons under the age of 21 is illegal, people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks. On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers. In 2010, there were approximately 189,000 emergency rooms visits by persons under age 21 for injuries and other conditions linked to alcohol. Do Your Part……Be The Solution! Mr. Waynee shared with the students his family’s “Eagle Staff”, which was created by his older brother. He explained its significance, and that it was created to honor their family. He spoke about the symbolism related to the floral design, which is woodland flowers that represents being from the woodland tribal area. The colored needle work attaching feathers to the staff represents the medals his father earned while serving in the Army during World War I. He demonstrated the smudging ceremony that the staff is used for to celebrate their family member’s lives. In addition, Mr. Waynee taught the students several words from the Anishinabe language. His knowledge helped our students connect what they are learning in Social Studies with our local area. To wrap up his presentation Mr. Waynee used our ebeam system to show a short video called “Proud to Be”. The video was created to make people think about the current issue related to changing the mascot for the Washington Redskins. Mr. Waynee allowed the students to share their opinions, and he was able to share his views as well. After the demonstration the students went back to their classrooms and wrote an opinion piece explaining their views. Thank you again Mr. Waynee! 5th Graders Investigate the Digestive System The young scientists in Mrs. Shelly Malcolm’s science classes designed a chemistry experiment to model the process of mechanical and chemical digestion in the human body. Some of the students shared their opinions about their lab experiences so far this year. Abram Meyer, a student in Mrs. Malcolm’s homeroom class, shared his opinion, “It is fun to do experiments in class so you can experience it yourself and see what happens. I was able to see the ‘food’ bubble up, dissolve and disappear just like it does in your stomach.” Jenna Stroh from Mrs. Potts’ homeroom had this to say, “I like doing experiments because there is something kids can see and learn. You can’t look in your stomach to see what’s happening. It’s more exciting than just reading a textbook, and I think I learn more that way. I remember it better”. You may notice that the students are wearing protective eye goggles for the chemistry experiment. This is possible due to a grant written by Mrs. Diane Potts. Mrs. Potts applied for the grant from the Bay Area Foundation and received the goggles along with many other wonderful resources for our students to use. Thank you to the Bay Area Foundation and to Mrs. Potts for all the time and work required to apply for the grant and select the resources. If you make a mistake, don’t pout or make excuses. Learn from it and be ready to continue to play. If a teammate makes a mistake, offer encouragement, not criticism. If you win, don’t rub it in. If you lose, don’t make excuses. Follow these guidelines for good spsortsmanship: q Abide by the rules of the game. q Follow the directions of the coach. q Try to avoid arguments. q Respect the other team’s effort. q Share in the responsibilities of the team. q Encourage teammates. q Give everyone a chance to play by the rules. q q Accept the judgement of the game’s officials. q End the game smoothly. Always play fair. -- Compiled by Darrell Burnett, PhD, sports ethics fellow Middle School News & Honor Roll UMMM....FRESH AIR!!
