When two become one
The team here at Your Greek Wedding Guide are inundated with questions
from couples regarding the meaning of the Christian Orthodox wedding
ceremony and why it is so important to get married in our faith, so we thought
who better to ask than the Very Reverend Seraphim Papathanasiou of St. John
the Baptist Church, London. In the article he explains how religion embraces
marriage but also some useful advice on how to keep a marriage working
forever ...
The sacrament of marriage in the Christian
Orthodox religion is a legal ceremony
whereby a man and woman are joined before
the eyes of God. However marriage is not a
mere contract nor a social bond but one of the
seven sacraments in our religion which
should be taken very seriously.
May you give us some examples from
our scriptures to show how sacred
marriage is in the eyes of God?
God blessed the first humans, Adam and Eve,
and united them as a couple when he told
them to ‘multiply and
proliferate’ (Genesis A. 28).
Jesus also blessed the couple whilst in Kana
(John 2: 1-11).
St Paul described marriage not only as one of
the great sacraments but also ‘a coupling of
perfect bonding - a lifetime devotion that is
unbreakable’.
Could you point out the most
important points in the ceremony?
There are four important points in the
Ceremony these are:
1.The free consent of the couple to enter a
new life together as one
It is very important that both man and woman
are confident and ready to enter into the important commitment called ‘marriage’.
8
There is no point in getting married just for
the ‘fun’ of it or because it is expected from
the status quo.
2. The crowning of the couple
As you are all aware during the ceremony
‘stefana’, wreathlike objects are placed on the
groom and brides heads. These are very
similar to the wreathes placed on athletes
heads once they have worked hard,
competed and won an athletic event.
The bride and groom are rewarded for
remaining pure and untouched throughout
their youth and whilst engaged to each other,
they have avoided the temptation of
intercourse and are now being blessed by
God for this.
3. The joining of hands
Once the ‘stefana’ have been placed on the
couples head their hands are united. This
symbolises that the couple must be united
throughout their future life together. This is
the point where two become one. The first
steps as a couple are taken when the Hymn of
Isaiah is sung and the couple walk around
three times for all to see and witness.
4. The blessing
The Psalms, the Evangelical reading along
with the Apostle are full of advice and
guidance as to how the couple should begin
and continue their new life together.
These are written in Ancient Greek but
translations are available for young couples
upon request.

Can you please tell our couples why it is
so important to get married in church?
As mentioned previously, the decision to get
married should not be taken lightly. Once the
couple are sure that they want to enter a life
together and promise to do so before the eyes
of God in Church, their physical bond also
becomes a lifetime spiritual bond which is
capable with the blessing and creative grace
of God to fulfil the divine purpose of
marriage which is:
1. To mutually live together, support
each other through the good and bad times
physically, spiritually and emotionally with
ultimate scope the salvation of their souls.
2. To proliferate and guide their offspring
into the Christian Orthodox Religion in order
for our religion and faith to continue for the
ages of ages as it has done so up to now.
The church is the House of God, so where
better to get blessed and begin a new life together but in such a holy place.
And finally, could you give our young
couples some spiritual advice
surrounding Marriage?
between the two and a problem shared is a
problem halved!
2. Both man and woman should try and help
and try to please each other at all times like
when they first met and fell in love.
3. Neither should ever confront each other in
the presence of others. This should be done
in private and at an appropriate time.
4. They should each find the good in each
other and always praise each other and forget
the bad things. Nagging is poison and slowly
kills a relationship.
5. To accept that whatever has happened can
not be changed. Take each day as it comes
and try to remember all that you have and not
all that you could have had.
6. With material things couples should
remember how much they actually have and
spiritually how much they are lacking.
Therefore you avoid getting stressed out!
7. Try to use the word ‘sorry’ as much as
possible and always apologise for the
mistakes you have made.
8. Try to ignore the hypocrisy, the nastiness
and the interference of third parties. Always
support your partner and remind them that
they are the centre of your world and nobody
else matters.
9. Apply the mantra ‘locate your own
mistakes in an argument and try to rectify
them before asking others to do so!’
Many thanks to the Very Reverend
Seraphim of St. John the Baptist,
Wightman Road, London N8 0LY for
taking the time to be interviewed by
YGWG.
1.Once the couple has agreed to get married
the ‘me’ turns into ‘us’. Hence both man and
woman should stop thinking about improving
their individual situations and begin to think
about how to improve their joint situations.
There are no more secrets

Nefeli and David met in a bar in London in
2005 and it was love at first site. The ever
romantic David decided to propose to
Nefeli at Christmas in 2006. The couple
then concentrated on planning their
wedding and set the date for 20th of
September 2009. They got married at The
Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the
Dormition of the Mother of God (Panayia),
Wood Green, and the reception followed at
The Royal Chace Hotel (pg. 26). They
would like to share their special day with
you!
The dress: I searched everywhere
for a dress and finally found the
perfect one at Stevie Gowns
London N18. As soon as I tried it
on I knew it was the one! It was a
brilliant white strapless gown with
crystals on the bodice. The skirt
was a meringue, covered with
scattered crystals. I felt like a real
princess! The train was quite long
and when spread out made the
dress look very grand.
Brides Tip: ‘Make
sure your maid of
honour is by your
side throughout the
day as you will need
her. My maid of
honour was amazing
wouldn’t change her
for the world!’
The Accessories: The floor length
veil was also from Stevie Gowns.
My shoes and tiara where great
finds on the internet. The jewellery I
wore was from Swarovski.

The Suit: David hired his
suit from Tux & Tails
Winchmore Hill N21. He
wore a grey suit with tails,
accompanied by a silver
waistcoat and a silver
cravat.
The Best man/Ushers: Our
best man and three ushers
also hired their grey suits
from Tux & Tails. However
they wore lilac waistcoats
and cravats to match our
theme.
The maid of honour/
bridesmaids: The maid of
honour wore a silver dress
and our three bridesmaids
wore lilac dressed with
silver detail on the bodices
from Littlewoods. The flower
girls wore little white dresses
The venue & music: We
always wanted to have our
reception at The Royal Chace
Hotel and that’s where we had
it! All the staff were very
helpful and we had a lovely
experience. Our band was
none other than Diastello who
played Three times a Lady by
Lionel Ritchie for our first
dance.
The menu: We had prawn
cocktail as a starter followed
by roast chicken with
potatoes and vegetables and
our dessert was yummy
Tiramisu.
Videographer: VGM(pg.36).
He was fantastic. He really
made us feel comfortable
throughout the day!
Groom’s
Tip: Make
sure your
speech is
perfect as
it is one of
the most
important
moments
of the day!
The flowers/decorations/
colour scheme: Our colour
scheme was white, silver
and lilac my favourite
colours! David was good at
just letting me choose and
get on with everything!
Sekret Garden Enfield,
decorated the guest tables
with fish bowls which had
two gold fish each and
decorated with white and
lilac flowers. Zayni
Flowers London did the
buttonholes, my bouquet of
white roses with diamantes
in the buds, the
bridesmaids bouquets Calla
lilies, the head and cake
tables.
The Cake: We had a four
tier cakes with silver hearts
embellished on each side of
each tier. The cake was
spectacular and very tasty
made by Nectar Patisserie
Tottenham. We wanted
something out of the
ordinary for our cake
topper so we had a glass
heart with our names
inscribed in it and the date
of our wedding.
Special Touches: The
whole day was amazing
and we enjoyed every moment. Very special moments was when Leonidas
played the violin at the
reception.

Costas Photography for

When YGWG approached Fairytails and asked for a brief
Program of what beauty treatments and therapies a bride and groom
should schedule to have done before their wedding Harri came up
with a whole six month agenda! It is vital to look good and feel
brilliant on your big day so here is what is recommended for a real
royal makeover!
Four to Six months before:
It is vital to start planning the pampering
beauty regimes, grooming and make-up
styles months before the big day. This will
relieve the stresses of the actual wedding
day closer to the time and you will
appreciate it more.
For both the bride and groom find a salon
or spa near you and book a facial and
massage package, both incorporating at
least 5 treatments of each.
For the skin: If you want to have the perfect glowing skin on the day try a deep
cleanse facial every three to four weeks,
which helps all skin types, dull skin, congestion and even in-grown hairs for men!
For more problematic skin
consult a dermatologist.
Massages: An aromatherapy massage is a
great choice as it addresses different
areas with the use of various essential oils
so whether it’s stress reducing, energizing
or relaxing it’s your choice to enjoy.
Hair & Make-up: Brides should
determine their hair style and colour in
advance and then decide on the make-up
colourings to complete the look for the big
day.
Lastly the bride should seek to confirm
appointments with her hairdresser and
make-up artist. At this point any allergies
should also be disclosed to avoid any
unwanted rashes or watery eyes on the
day.
12
One month before:
For the skin :If the groom wants the
perfect shave for the big day then a cutthroat shave is ideal. Find out if your local
barbers do these and book an appointment
for a trial. It is quite a luxurious treatment
as it incorporates exfoliation and hot towels
to open the pores, so treat yourselves boys!
Both bride and groom should stop having
ANY type of facials at this point as this
may cause unwanted impurities on the skin
on the big day.
Make –up: The first make-up trial should
now be booked. Try not to book it too far
in advance as skin colour changes and
product application varies according to the
weather.
Wedding make-up should last at least 10
hours without a touch up so keep it on after
the trial and monitor how long it lasts.
Talk to your make-up artist and voice your
concerns, if any.
Semi-permanent eyelashes: For all brides
semi-permanent eyelash extensions have
arrived.! They are great and last between
six to eight weeks , so great for the
honeymoon too. They are made at different
lengths and thickness so they are easily
adjustable for a natural look.
Massages: A couple more massages to
relieve the tension and stress building due
to all the organising would go down a treat
at this point!
To advertise please e-mail [email protected]
Several days before:
Ladies try getting your eyebrows threaded.
This is an Ancient Asian technique where a
thread is used to pull out the hair and gives
a much cleaner, more arched and shapely
eyebrow.
Both the Bride and Groom should try and
fit in their last massages and spend some
time together…. Alone!
You should both try and get a manicure
and pedicure. Yes boys, a manicure can do
wonders for those hardworking hands!
Girls a great chip free nail varnish is
recommended. These usually last for up to
a month and this is very important if you
are going on your honeymoon straight after
your wedding. Your nails will look just as
nice in all your honeymoon photos even if
you are on an action packed break! Bio
Sculpture gels are highly recommended
and they are fabulous as they can be applied over false tips but also on your feet…
Indulge.
General Tips for the big day:
For the Groom:
If you choose to shave at home avoid
shaving rash by using shaving foam not
shaving cream. Try to use a new razor with
lots of hot water and shave in the direction
of the hair growth. Alternatively go to a
barber and sit back and relax whist it is all
taken care of for you!
Try not to use solariums or fake tan on the
big day. If you need that last minute tint
make sure you book yourself a professional
in order to avoid orange streaks. Also make
it very subtle as a tan tends to look muddy
in photographs.
Try to avoid extreme new hair do’s just
before the big day as it can be a little too
risky.
Finally just remember you don’t need to
have any extravagant treatments before the
big day as your Bride loves you for the
person you are!
For the Bride:
There are three areas of the face that can be
accentuated with make– up, whether it is
your beautiful big eyes, your greatly arched
Eyebrows, or your luscious big lips, only
TWO can be emphasised. If you are going
for the glam look around the eyes try to
avoid a dark shade of lipstick. On the other
hand if you choose the ‘Marilyn Monroe’
look, with thick eyeliner and scarlet lipstick
then the eyebrows must stay natural.
Your wedding make-up and style should
match your personality. Wedding make-up
should make you stand out from the crowd
but most importantly you should remain
looking like you! Your Groom doesn’t want
to see a ‘stranger’ walking down the aisle.
Team up with your maid of honour or a
bridesmaid to keep your lipstick and
make-up close at all times for the touch up’s.
Above all enjoy your day!
Many thanks to Harri from Fairytails for
providing us these great beauty tips!

VENUE DECOR
We are George and Sophia a couple
who work together and represent Gold
Star Venue Decor. Our passion is creating
wonderful decor for weddings and events
and being involved in different cultures
and meeting new people. We excel in
transforming ordinary spaces into
something spectacular.
With the considerable benefits of a
product design degree, experience in
management and customer service,
a family with decades of experience in
fashion and fabric manufacturing and our
passion for event production we
decided to enter the wedding industry.
We began in the spring of 2008 designing
and creating made-to-measure chair
covers for special occasions. Our small
chair cover company built a strong
reputation and is renowned for covers
and sashes of superb quality at affordable
prices. Very soon our love of transforming
even ordinary or lifeless rooms into really
spectacular places and our widely
respected ability to enhance already
beautiful venues inspired us to expand
our services. We now offer professional
lighting such as mood lighting and starlit
dance floors as well as other venue
decoration to suit a wide variety of
budgets and tastes. We pride ourselves on
our personal and honest approach to
business and we love to meet all our
clients on a one-to-one basis.
Being a young couple enables true
understanding about what new
couples wish for their wedding - whether
it be a modern twist or classic theme. We
aim to inspire and create new things and
bring a fresh view on venue decoration.
Organising a wedding can be a daunting
process when working full time. We
believe research is key to finding the best
prices and best service but we rely
heavily on sincere recommendations
from friends, family, previous clients and
suppliers. We care about every single
client's needs and we ask for feedback
after every event.
We take pleasure in spending as much
time as we need with our clients to create
their perfect setting. We have no problem
going that extra mile to help you with
your specific needs and even if you don’t
manage to come and see us in person, we
will make sure you know exactly what
you are hiring with no compromises.
Our advice is to leave plenty of time to
organise your venue décor in advance
although we do try to accommodate last
minute bookings. Venue decor plays an
immense role in your wedding,
regardless of the budget so; make sure
you choose a company who you can
trust, who will be available to talk to you
at any at time of day and will deliver the
best on your special day.

Angelina & Emilio met when
Emilio started working at her
dad’s shop in Brighton. They
hated each other when they first
met! However as they say
opposites attract and they
gradually started liking one and
other. Emilio popped the
question after a meal at
Angelina’s favourite restaurant
and a romantic stroll along
Brighton beach. He stopped right
by Angelina’s favourite place in
Brighton -The West Pier- got
down on one knee and asked the
important question. Needless to
say Angelina accepted! The were
married at St. Michael and All
Angel’s Church in Hove and the
reception followed at The Grand
Hotel Brighton.

The Dress: My dress was a Hollywood Dream’s
design straight from their factory in North London. It was
the first dress I tried on and as soon as I put it on, I knew
it was the one! It was a Cinderella style dress made from
ivory taffeta silk. The bodice was sweetheart cut, strapless
and covered in jewels. The skirt of the dress was very full,
with beads and gatherings.
The Accessories: The tiara was a ‘Silver Swarovski
Crystal Clear Handmade Bridal Tiara’ made with clustered Swarovski crystals. It was bought from ‘Goddess
Handmade Tiaras’ online. My earrings and necklace
were all from Swarovski.
My shoes were ivory satin ballet shoes, bought from
www.dancedirect.com.
The Suit: Emilio’s outfit was hired from Moss Bros.
He wore a grey Lingfield
morning suit accompanied with a white shirt, ivory
waistcoat and pale gold silk cravat and handkerchief.

Bride’s Tip:
Shop around
on the
internet as
you can find
great deals
for items that
are in the
shops, but
cheaper!
The maid of honour/bridesmaids:
The Band: Fantastic Greek band called ‘Cleopatra’.
Our maid of honour looked stunning. She wore a rich
plum colour dress with gathering to one side and a
crystal jewelled strap.
We had 13 bridesmaids. The four older girls wore an
ivory, just above the knee fitted dress from Coast.
The four junior bridesmaids wore a dress from
www.1-special-day.co.uk. It was an ivory satin ankle
length dress. This dress had spaghetti straps and a three
tiered tulip skirt with diamante flower patterns to the top
layer. The five youngest bridesmaids also wore a dress
from www.1-special-day.co.uk. The dress was also
ivory with a fuller skirt.
Colour schemes: We had a colour theme of gold
and coral. We chose the roses before
anything else. I love the colour coral and the gold is such
a rich colour for a wedding, they went great together. We
also had a small unintended ‘bling’ theme going on.
Everything had crystal or diamantes on it.
The Cake: My Godfather made our cake. He has a
bakery in Finchley called ‘Parkway’. The cake had 5
tiers. The top layer was fruit cake and the rest was
chocolate cake. The cake itself was ivory. It had
scattered coral roses and a shimmery gold waterfall
coming down one side. For the cake top we chose an
ivory figurine of an intertwined couple.
The Favours: My Godfather also made our favours.
We had five delicious biscuits in an ivory organza bag.
On the organza we put an ivory ribbon with ‘Emilio &
Angelina ~ 5th September 2010’ written on it. My
wonderful cousin sewed 450 of the ribbons onto the bags
by hand.
The lead singer’s name is Michael.
The Flowers: We had two florists working
together for the flower arranging; my aunty from
Norbury who has a florist called ‘All Occasions’ and
another girl from Brighton who works from home called
Tasha. The main flower in the
arranging was a coral rose called ‘Great Demetra’. The
bouquet was made solely from this flower with a little
greenery. Inside every rose was a diamante pin. Emilio’s
button hole was also made using this rose. The centrepieces were made solely from the coral rose. The flowers
for the head table and the church were very vibrant. The
mix of flowers and colours was amazing.
Special Touches/ Funny moments: The ceremony
started with an organist playing ‘Canon’ by Pachelbel as
the bridesmaids walked in. when they had entered, the
organist began to play the wedding march as I walked in
with my dad. We both felt so nervous until we were
standing side by side, we looked at each other and started
laughing. The archbishop conducted the service which
was special. Everything was going so well until I had to
run to the toilet in the middle of the ceremony. Our
guests thought I was leaving Emilio at the altar.
Everyone shared a sigh of relief, when I came back.
(nothing ever runs smoothly, but it was quite funny)!
The menu: For starters we had a caramelised red
onion and goat’s cheese tart with sun ripened tomatoes
and chilli sauce, followed by roast fillet of Scotch beef
with accompaniments. For dessert we had Valhorona
bitter chocolate tart, cookie ice cream and white
chocolate sauce. Truly scrumptious!

Marriage Blessing
May your marriage always be
blessed with the pure and
profoundly loving feelings
drawing you so closely
together now: extraordinary
communication, listening and
understanding, putting
yourselves in the other’s place, as
well as expressing your own
needs; eagerness to compromise,
because you love so much, you
want to give whatever is needed,
wanted, for happiness; and deep
commitment to do whatever it
takes to maintain the strong bond
present on your wedding day. May
your marriage always be blessed,
now and forever.

The flowers: We chose lilac roses
throughout from the bouquet ,the
buttonholes, the flowers held by the
bridesmaids to the table decorations.
For the reception we decided not to
decorate the tables outside as the
gardens and the view were stunning. We
decided only to decorate the venue inside
where our guests were to have dinner with
flowers on the tables. Our table decorations consisted of lilac roses, white anthuriums,
and three bamboo stems (apparently it is
good luck to have an odd number of stems
in the arrangement!)
