23 Albert Street, Langton ON N0E 1G0 519-875-4448 www.granderie.ca/schools/langton February 2015 Principal – William Valoppi Secretary – Linda Mudford Kindergarten Registration Still Open Kindergarten Registration continues at Langton Public School. Come into the office, during the school day, and we will help you fill out the registration form. Children who will be 4 years old by December 31, 2015 or children who will be 5 years old (and did not attend Junior Kindergarten) should be registered at Langton Public School (to start school in September 2015). We are having extended hours for Kindergarten Registration, at Langton Public School, on Thursday, February 12, 2015: 9:30 am to 2:30 pm 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm NO APPOINTMENT IS NECESSARY Please let any friends, family and neighbours know about the Kindergarten registration at our school. By having families register their child now, will help us determine the number of Kindergarten classrooms in September 2015. Once Kindergarten Registration is complete, school organization for the upcoming school year will begin. There will be a Welcome to Kindergarten orientation for parents in May 2015. Information for Parents of children in Senior Kindergarten A letter will be sent home giving you information about the EDI [Early Development Instrument]. This is an assessment that is done every 3 years in Senior Kindergarten classrooms across the province. Your child's teacher will assess how ready your child is to learn at school. A child’s readiness to learn is considered in 5 areas: their physical health, emotional maturity, communication, language and thinking, and their social skills. The information is used by the Ministry of Education and by Public Health Units to inform programming and strategies to support young children to learn. It is up to you whether or not your child gets assessed. We are asking that you watch for the letter and if, after reading it, you want something explained or you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. We want you to have all the information you need to make an informed choice about your child's participation. News from Langton Parent Council The last meeting of the Langton Parent Council was held on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. The agenda included discussion items, such as fundraising plans for the year, as well as the treasurer’s and principal’s report. The next Langton Parent Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2015 (5:00 to 6:30 pm). The agenda includes a number of discussion items that will help to make LPS a great school. All interested parents are welcome to attend any or all LPC Meetings. You do not need to be a member of the LPC to attend. Meetings occur once a month on the first or second Tuesday, from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. We are very excited to announce our annual Penny Sale night will be taking place on Friday, February 20, 2015. We will be holding a separate Bingo night later in the year. We are looking for new and gently used donations (no clothing please) to make this night a success. If you are able to make a donation, or are interested in donating your time, please contact Tina Hurley, Parent Council Chair, at 519-868-0593 or [email protected], or Alyssia Davis, Events Manager at 519-875-4434 or [email protected] for more information. Doors open at 5:30pm, with the Penny Sale draw for prizes starting at 7:00pm. Tickets will be sold for $2.00 per sheet. The Intermediate students will also be operating a concession stand, as a fundraiser for their Ottawa trip. Please come out and join the fun! As in previous years we are required to survey our families to determine if there is an interest for a Before and After school program at Langton Public School. This year we will survey all families with children in Kindergarten to Grade 6 to make sure that we gather information from all families. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ EcoClub News Mrs. E. De Serranno, EcoClub leader, has the following events planned for the entire school: February 5th - Sweater Day (please wear a sweater; school heat will be turned down by 3 degrees); February will be LOL - lights out lunches. Sports Congratulations to the Junior Volleyball team who travelled to Port Dover on January 22 for the Junior Tournament. Their overall play improved immensely, especially their serving. They had a close opener with Lakewood Elementary School, but lost both games. Next they met Waterford and came back from a huge deficit with awesome serving by Tommy W. to win the first game against them. Unfortunately they lost the second game in a close match. Finally they met Courtland in the “C” final and won their first game decisively but ran out of gas in the final two games against them. Congratulations to Luke T. for his leadership, Anthony H. for his strong serves, Tommy W. for his 14 serves in a row, and Kurtis P., Oliver W., Anthony Z., for their patience and support on the court and from the bench. Also, congratulations to Destiny N. for her enthusiastic play, Tina R, for her strong serving, Maddison W., Beth M., and Anita M. for their good efforts! Many thanks to Mrs. D. Broker for acting as coach for the Junior Volleyball team. Special thanks to Meika V. for all her assistance and support in practices, games and the tournament. Thanks also to Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Marlatt and Mrs. Thomas for driving our students to and from the tournament and games. Inclement Weather With the possibility of inclement weather and school closure (just like Friday, January 9th), it is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility at all times to decide whether or not it is safe for their children to attend school, as they would at any other time. Concussion Information Kim King (grade 7/8 teacher and coach), Sara VanWynsberghe (Learning Resource Teacher and Administrative Designate), and William Valoppi (Principal) attended Board-sponsored Concussion Training on January 23 and will information with the rest of the Langton staff. For parents, see attached information sheet. You can also visit www.granderie.ca -> Parent tab -> Concussion Information … this is what you will find: Grand Erie District School Board is currently in the process of refining the draft of our concussion policy. Children and adolescents are among those at greatest risk for concussions and that while there is potential for a concussion any time there is body trauma, the risk is greatest during activities where collisions can occur, such as during physical education classes, playground time, or school-based sports activities. Increasing awareness of conditions to prevent and identify symptoms related to concussions will support the proper management of concussions, reducing increased risk. Learn more about concussions by watching a short video by Dr. Mike Evans on Concussion Management and Return to Learn. Students and parents can take a short online course - grades 3, 6 and 9 levels are available free. Information for parents and students can be located at Concussion Web Portal, Government of Ontario. Concussion Guidelines for PARENTS & CAREGIVERS WHAT IS A CONCUSSION? A concussion is a brain injury that cannot be seen on routine x-rays, CT scans, or MRIs. It affects the way a child may think and remember things, and can cause a variety of symptoms. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF CONCUSSION? A CHILD DOES NOT NEED TO BE KNOCKED OUT (LOSE CONSCIOUSNESS) TO HAVE HAD A CONCUSSION. THINKING PROBLEMS CHILD’S COMPLAINTS OTHER PROBLEMS • Does not know time, date, place, period of game, opposing team, score of game • Headache • Poor coordination or balance • Dizziness • Blank stare/glassy eyed • Feels dazed • Vomiting • General confusion • Feels “dinged” or stunned; “having my bell rung” • Slurred speech • Cannot remember things that happened before and after the injury • Knocked out • Sees stars, flashing lights • Slow to answer questions or follow directions • Ringing in the ears • Easily distracted • Sleepiness • Poor concentration • Loss of vision • Strange or inappropriate emotions (ie. laughing, crying, getting mad easily) • Sees double or blurry • Stomachache, stomach pain, nausea • Not playing as well WHAT CAUSES A CONCUSSION? WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR CHILD GETS A CONCUSSION? Any blow to the head, face or neck, or a blow to the body which causes a sudden jarring of the head may cause a concussion (ie. a ball to the head, being checked into the boards in hockey). Your child should stop playing the sport right away. They should not be left alone and should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible that day. If your child is knocked out, call an ambulance to take him/her to the hospital immediately. Do not move your child or remove any equipment such as helmet, in case of a cervical spine injury. Wait for paramedics to arrive. Our aim is an injury-free Canada. Parachute is bringing attention to the issue of preventable injury and to help Canadians reduce their risks of injury and enjoy long lives lived to the fullest. CONCUSSION GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY CHILD TO GET BETTER? The signs and symptoms of a concussion often last for 7-10 days but may last much longer. In some cases, children may take many weeks or months to heal. Having had previous concussions may increase the chance that a person may take longer to heal. HOW IS A CONCUSSION TREATED? THE MOST IMPORTANT TREATMENT FOR A CONCUSSION IS REST. The child should not exercise, go to school or do any activities that may make them worse, like riding a bike, play wrestling, reading, working on the computer or playing video games. If your child goes back to activities before they are completely better, they are more likely to get worse, and to have symptoms longer. Even though it is very hard for an active child to rest, this is the most important step. Once your child is completely better at rest (all symptoms have resolved), they can start a step-wise increase in activities. It is important that your child is seen by a doctor before he/she begins the steps needed to return to activity, to make sure he/she is completely better. If possible, your child should be seen by a doctor with experience in treating concussions. WHEN CAN MY CHILD RETURN TO SCHOOL? Sometimes children who have a concussion may find it hard to concentrate in school and may get a worse headache or feel sick to their stomach if they are in school. Children should stay home from school if their symptoms get worse while they are in class. Once they feel better, they can try going back to school part time to start (eg. for half days initially) and if they are okay with that, then they can go back full time. WHEN CAN MY CHILD RETURN TO SPORT? It is very important that your child not go back to sports if he/she has any concussion symptoms or signs. Return to sport and activity must follow a step-wise approach: www.parachutecanada.org STEP 1) No activity, complete rest. Once back to normal and cleared by a doctor, go to step 2. STEP 2) Light exercise such as walking or stationary cycling, for 10-15 minutes. STEP 3) Sport specific aerobic activity (ie. skating in hockey, running in soccer), for 20-30 minutes. NO CONTACT. STEP 4) “On field” practice such as ball drills, shooting drills, and other activities with NO CONTACT (ie. no checking, no heading the ball, etc.). STEP 5) “On field” practice with body contact, once cleared by a doctor. STEP 6) Game play. Note: Each step must take a minimum of one day. If your child has any symptoms of a concussion (e.g. headache, feeling sick to his/her stomach) that come back at any step, STOP activity, wait 24-48 hours, and resume activity at previous step. When should I take my child to the doctor? Every child who gets a head injury should be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Your child should go back to the doctor IMMEDIATELY if, after being told he/she has a concussion, he/she has worsening of symptoms such as: 1. being more confused 2. headache that is getting worse 3. vomiting more than twice 4. strange behaviour 5. not waking up 6. having any trouble walking 7. having a seizure Problems caused by a head injury can get worse later that day or night. The child should not be left alone and should be checked throughout the night. If you have any concerns about the child’s breathing or how they are sleeping, wake them up. Otherwise, let them sleep. If they seem to be getting worse, you should see your doctor immediately. NO CHILD SHOULD GO BACK TO SPORT UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN CLEARED TO DO SO BY A DOCTOR. February 2015 Sun. Mon. Tue. Wed.
