About the Speakers: *All speakers are employees of St. Charles Hospital and St. Charles Orthopedics.
Hayley Queller, MD
Dr. Queller completed an undergraduate degree in
mathematics at Franklin & Marshall College where
she was valedictorian of her class, as well as a
first team Academic All-American soccer player.
She earned her medical degree from Georgetown
University School of Medicine after which she
completed a dual residency in Internal Medicine and
Pediatrics at the Christiana Care Health System in
Delaware. She continued her training at Christiana
Care by completing a fellowship in Primary Care
Sports Medicine. Dr. Queller serves as the comedical director of the ThinkSmart! Concussion
Management Program.
Jennifer Gray, DO
Dr. Gray is an attending physiatrist in the
Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
at St. Charles Hospital. Her areas of interest include
concussion management, neuromuscular disease,
electrodiagnostic medicine, and hip fracture
rehabilitation. Dr. Gray received her medical degree
from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.
She completed her internship at Good Samaritan
Hospital Medical Center, and her residency in
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Stony
Brook University Medical Center where she held
the position of Chief Resident in her final year.
Following residency, Dr. Gray completed a fellowship
in the specialty area of Neuromuscular and
Electrodiagnostic Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Gray has been invited to lecture on concussion
management for several groups, including the Long
Island Head Injury Association, and is involved
in concussion research. Dr. Gray serves as the
co-medical director of the ThinkSmart! Concussion
Management Program.
Mark Harary, MD
Dr. Harary earned his undergraduate degree in
Movement Science from the University of Michigan
in 1998. He went on to medical school at Ross
University, where he graduated with honors in
2002. After obtaining his medical degree, Dr. Harary
completed a family medicine residency at UPMC
Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Following
residency, he completed his fellowship training in
Sports Medicine at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL.
Dr. Harary is board certified in Sports Medicine and
Family Medicine. He is a member of the American
Medical Society of Sports Medicine and the
American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Harary
is actively involved with the Arthritis Foundation. Dr.
Harary specializes in the non-operative treatment
of musculoskeletal problems in both pediatric
and adult patients. He has a special interest in
treating osteoarthritis, fractures, acute injuries and
concussions. Dr. Harary is the team physician for the
Miller Place High School football team.
Luga Podesta, MD
Dr. Luga Podesta is a nationally recognized sports
medicine physician specializing in the non-surgical
treatment of orthopedic, musculoskeletal and sports
related injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee and spine.
Dr. Podesta has practiced non-surgical orthopedics
and sports medicine since 1990. He remains active
academically lecturing nationally and internationally
on various topics specific to the diagnosis, treatment
and prevention of injuries. He has authored or coauthored numerous scientific articles, book chapters and
instructional videos on a variety of sports medicine topics.
He is a respected member of numerous medical societies
including the American Orthopedic Society of Sports
Medicine, American Academy of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, International Spinal Intervention Society,
Arena Football Physician and Trainers Society and Major
League Baseball Physicians Association. Dr. Podesta
has served as team physician and sports medicine
consultant for numerous professional, collegiate, high
school, recreational and youth athletic teams. He has
served 16 seasons as a Team Physician for the LA Dodgers
and in 2001, as the Head Team Physician for the World
Champion LA Xtreme professional football team of the
XFL. Dr. Podesta has served as the Head Team Physician
for the LA Avengers of the Arena Football League for 8
years, LA Riptide professional lacrosse team of Major
League Lacrosse for 3 years and continues to serve as a
consultant to the Major League Baseball’s LA Angels of
Anaheim and Major League Baseball Umpires.

Danielle DeGiorgio, DO
Danielle DeGiorgio, DO, attended Stony Brook University
on a full athletic scholarship. After obtaining her medical
degree from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine,
Dr. DeGiorgio completed an internship at Brookhaven
Memorial Hospital, followed by a residency in Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Stony Brook
University Medical Center, serving as chief resident in her
senior year. Dr. DeGiorgio completed training in structural
acupuncture at Harvard Medical School. Following her
residency, Dr. DeGiorgio went on to complete a Fellowship
in Sports Medicine at Christiana Care, serving as a
Fellow team physician for the University of Delaware,
Delaware State University, as well as for local high
school football and wrestling teams. Dr. DeGiorgio is
dual board certified in PM&R and Sports Medicine and a
certified acupuncturist. She is a member of the American
Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the
American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the
American College of Sports Medicine.
Kimberly Pena, PT, DPT,
Coordinator of Vestibular Rehabilitation
Kim received her doctorate in Physical Therapy from NY
Institute of Technology in 2004 has taken continuing
education courses with emphasis on vestibular
rehabilitation and balance and fall prevention. She
received her competency certificate in Vestibular
rehabilitation in December 2006. Kim is currently the
Clinical Coordinator for Vestibular Rehabilitation at St.
Charles Hospital.

Course Description:
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the patho-physiology and general treatment algorithm for concussion
• Define post-concussion syndrome
• Differentiate between post-concussion syndrome and other reasons for prolonged
symptoms after head injury
This lecture course will focus on current concepts in concussion management including
recognition and diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of concussion and postconcussion syndrome and new technologies for the treatment and management for concussion.
• Explain the importance of physical activity in the treatment of post-concussion syndrome
Target Audience:
• Understand basic anatomy of the spine
Athletic trainers, athletic directors, school nurses, teachers, physical therapists, physical
therapy assistants, and other healthcare providers or members of the concussion
management team.
• Understand how to evaluate the cervical spine for injury and recognize common cervical
injuries
Educational Materials:
• Understanding the basics, risks, and benefits of acupuncture in the treatment of
concussion
Participants will receive a learning handout that includes a copy of the power point
presentations and applicable references and resources.
• Describe protocols to assist gradual return to cognitive activities after a concussion
• Explain neck strengthening exercises and their impact on injury prevention
• Explain the indications for Sphenocath procedure
• Understand what C3 Logix Baseline Testing provides and how to implement

Purpose:
Management of concussion continues to be in the forefront and a top priority in sports
medicine. Treatment methodologies, philosophies, and interventions continue to evolve for
both the management of concussion and post-concussion syndrome. A multi-disciplinary
approach is often necessary to best manage individuals following injury. In addition,
expanding baseline testing to include various domains in addition to neuro-cognitive testing
such as balance and occulomotor function can provide valuable information to health care
providers involved in the treatment of athletes following a concussion. It is important for
all member of the concussion management team including athletic trainers who are often
the first to identify potential injury as well as playing a key role in return to play, have an
understanding of the changes and advancements in the area of concussion management.

At the conclusion of this program participants will have an understanding of the basic
patho-physiology of concussion and a general treatment algorithm to manage concussion
and post-concussion syndrome. In addition, participants will learn about new treatment
interventions frequently being including in the multidisciplinary management of concussion
such as vestibular therapy, acupuncture and vision therapy. Lastly, participants will learn
how baseline testing can be expanded beyond neuro-cognitive testing.
