FIFTY SIXTH YEAR NO. 12
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2016
USS Coronado returns to Pearl Harbor
PACIFIC OCEAN - Littoral combat ship USS Coronado (LCS
4) experienced an engineering casualty Aug. 30 while transiting to
the Western Pacific.
The crew took precautionary measures, and the ship returned to
Pearl Harbor to determine the extent of the problem and conduct
repairs. Coronado is operating under her own power and is being
escorted by USNS Henry J. Kaiser. The casualty appears to be
unrelated to recent propulsion problems on USS Freedom and USS
Fort Worth.
The extent of repairs and any operational impact is unknown at
this time. An assessment of the casualty will be completed upon
return to Pearl Harbor, and additional details will be made available
when possible.
Coronado departed Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Aug. 26 to
continue its independent deployment to the Western Pacific. Prior
to departing Pearl Harbor the ship participated in the Rim of the
Pacific 2016 exercise.
On June 22, Coronado and its crew of about 70 Sailors assigned
to LCS Squadron 1 deployed from their homeport in San Diego.
“Last night’s (Aug. 30) problem is the fourth issue in the last year,”
said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson. “Some of
these were caused by personnel, and some were due to design and
engineering. These issues are all receiving our full and immediate
attention, both individually and in the aggregate.
“To address the personnel and training issues, I established a
program-wide review earlier this summer to incorporate deployment lessons learned and identify systemic problems with how the
program was structured. Vice Adm. Rowden has completed the
review, which recommends changes to the crewing, deployment,
mission module, training and testing concepts. These changes will
provide more ownership and stability, while also allowing for more
forward presence. In light of recent problems, we also recognize
more immediate action needs to be taken as well. The review is
being briefed to leadership before implementation. I also support
Vice Adm. Rowden’s decision to improve oversight class-wide,
which will result in the retraining and certifying of all LCS Sailors
who work in engineering.
“With respect to the engineering issues, we’re reviewing each one
and making the appropriate corrections. For instance, the software
problem on USS Milwaukee has been corrected for all ships.”
Stockdale Award recipients announced
WASHINGTON - Navy announced the two 2016 Vice Admiral
James Bond Stockdale Leadership Award recipients Aug. 30.
Cmdr. Gary G. Montalvo, commanding officer of USS North Carolina is the Pacific Fleet recipient and Cmdr. Ken J. Kleinschnittger,
former commanding officer of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile
Unit 12 and currently working with Navy Expeditionary Combat
Command forces, is the Fleet Forces recipient.
The two recipients were nominated by their peers, who were also
eligible for the award, and chosen from among eight finalists to
receive the award.
The Stockdale award was established in honor of Vice Adm.
Stockdale whose distinguished naval career symbolized the highest
standards of excellence in both personal conduct and leadership. It
is presented annually to two commissioned officers on active duty
in the grade of commander or below who are serving in command of
a single ship, submarine, aviation squadron, Sea, Air, Land (SEAL)
team, naval special warfare squadron, SEAL delivery vehicle team,
special boat team, explosive ordnance disposal mobile unit, mobile
diving and salvage unit, or Navy special clearance team and who
serve as examples of excellence in leadership and conspicuous contribution to the improvement of leadership in the Navy.

First fleet F35-C carrier qualifications,
final round of testing conducted at sea
by Donna Cipolloni
TLANTIC OCEAN
- The jet blast from
seven F-35C Lightning II Joint
Strike Fighter aircraft only
added to the already intense
summer heat and humidity on
the flight deck of USS George
Washington (CVN 73), Aug.
15, where the third and final
round of at-sea developmental
testing, or DT-III, was underway about 100 miles offshore
from Virginia.

A
During the 20-day testing
period, which is set to conclude
Sept. 1, objectives included external symmetric and asymmetric weapons loadings; launches
and recoveries at maximum
weight; approach handling
qualities; landing systems certification; and engine logistics.
In addition to phase three
of shipboard developmental
testing, jet after jet thundered
on and off the deck as 12
instructors and pilots from
Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA)
101, out of Eglin AFB, Fla.,
completed the Navy’s first fleet
carrier quals, with each pilot
knocking out two touch-andgoes and 10 arrested landings.
“The work we did [during
the two previous testing phases
at sea] directly fed what VFA101 was able to come out and
do today,” explained Tom
Briggs, lead flight test engineer with the F-35 Lightning
II Integrated Test Force (ITF)
at NAS Patuxent River and
recipient of the 2015 Department of the Navy Lead Tester
of the Year award. “For those of
us involved in the program for
quite a while, it was incredibly
gratifying to see them come out
and use that work to start making this aircraft real and get it
out to the fleet.”
now flies the F-35C. This was
his third ship trip and 50th trap -and he has a definite favorite.
“I prefer the F-35,”
he said. “It’s easy to fly,
autopilot is nice, cockpit
has good visibility, and
mission systems make it
easy to do your task.”
One of the most difficult and
hazardous tasks in naval aviation is landing on the deck of an
aircraft carrier, something now
made simpler by Delta Flight
Path. Developed by Lockheed
Martin after a lot of crosstalk
and technology sharing with
NAVAIR personnel, the semiautomated landing mode significantly helps lower a pilot’s
workload task.
“The control laws allow aircraft to fly a commanded glide
slope,” Dyckman said. “Before,
you had to manually fly that path
through the air. Now, at the push
of a button, the airplane will tip
over and fly that path. If I have
a good approach behind ship, I
can push one button. If there are
deviations, I can make a correction. Other than that, I may not
touch the stick at all during the
approach, from the start until
touchdown. Coming to the ship
is as easy as landing on an airfield now and that enables us to
spend less time training guys to
land on the ship.”
Other testing involved improved nighttime visibility for
the aircraft’s third generation

Dunford, senior British officer
affirm close U.S.-U.K. ties
WASHINGTON - Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met with the British defense chief, Air
Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach, at the Pentagon Aug. 26, Joint
Staff spokesman Navy Capt. Greg Hicks said in a statement.
During his meeting with Peach, Dunford affirmed the U.S.
commitment to a strong bilateral partnership with the United
Kingdom, and highlighted the U.K.’s role in European security,
Hicks said.
The chairman also emphasized the importance of the U.K.’s
participation in counter-Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
operations, and expressed his appreciation for the U.K.’s work
in countering violent extremism, Hicks added.
ogy right on the pilot’s visor.
“I don’t have to look down for
a piece of info on one display,
then to another display and
correlate it all in my head; everything appears in the helmet,”
Dyckman said. “When I look
out, even if I’m looking away
from where I’m going, I can see
my target information, airspeed,
altitude, threats. With this airplane, I basically have a display
with my aircraft in the center
and it presents information for
situational awareness.”
Test pilot Lt. Cmdr. Daniel
“Tonto” Kitts, officer in charge
of the VX-23 test detachment,
noted three things about the F35C that excite him.
“The ability to bring the aircraft back aboard the ship safely
the first time, every time for
the most junior pilot to the
most senior is one of its major
advantages,” Kitts said. “Also,
the incorporation of its mission
systems to the pilot and the fusion of that information is really
going to make it a lethal tactical platform. Lastly, its ability
to share that information with
other assets in the fleet is going
to help build the picture for the
whole carrier strike group. Not
to mention, we’re bringing a
stealthy airplane to the carrier
decks for the first time.”
DT-III was an incremental
buildup on five years of work
from the Pax River ITF team,
beginning with the first aircraft’s
initial onshore catapult and ar-
resting gear testing and ending
with the hundreds of operation-.,
Wed
al cats and traps that recently
took place aboard Washington.
Having completed the gross
weights and load up testing
necessary to provide the fleet
with a full launch and recovery
bulletin, it was the final phase
of testing.
“This is the last time we’re
coming to a carrier for F-35
testing and support for Navy
IOC (initial operational capability),” explained Cmdr. J.
Ryan Murphy, director of Test
and Evaluation/F-35 Naval
Variants. “It was satisfying to
watch [VFA-101] start to utilize
the aircraft. After all, that’s the
point of all the years of work -to equip and empower the fleet
with the F-35C.”
The F-35C, the Navy carrier variant of the Joint Strike
Fighter, conducted its first shipboard test flights in November
2014 aboard USS Nimitz and
follow-on developmental testing aboard USS Dwight D.
Eisenhower in October 2015.
Engineered for a carrier, its 51foot wingspan is larger than the
Air Force’s F-35A and Marine
Corps’ F-35B short take-offand-landing variants.
“It’s going to be a viable aircraft that’s going to do what it’s
been designed to do,” Briggs
said.
It’s expected the Navy will
declare initial operational capability in 2018.

Reflecting on the Navy’s committment to equality
A message from the
Navy surgeon general
E
by Cmdr. Hillary Darby
ach year the United
States reflects on Women’s Equality Day Aug.
26, commemorating the passage
of the 19th Amendment in 1920
that granted women their right
to vote.
Graphic of a Sailor hugging a child.
For those of us in the Navy,
where we receive equal pay for
equal work and where all military occupations and positions
have been opened to women
without exception as long as
they qualify and meet specific
standards, we have a responsibility to continue championing
equality for the next generation
of girls and women.
My generation is part of a
cresting wave of equality and
greater opportunities for women
in uniform.
At the U.S. Naval Academy I
was a member of the 11th graduating class to include women,
where I witnessed the Navy’s
commitment to equality and a
deep investment in women as
future leaders.
I had the great good fortune
to select for naval aviation and
that’s when the world really
opened to me. When combat
helicopters became an option for
women I selected the Sea Hawk,
and it’s been an awesome ride
ever since.
Take action to prevent suicide
to make a difference serving
in defense of our great nation,
regardless of gender.
Cmdr. Hillary Darby stands in front of a Sea
Hawk helicopter flown by Cmdr. Katie Ellis, commanding officer of Helicopter Maritime Strike
Squadron 35. Navy courtesy photo
As with most Sailors, I’ve
had the privilege of serving at
various duty stations around
the world.
I’ve served as an officer-incharge of a helicopter detachment at sea, an executive officer
of a Marine unit, an OIC of a
surveillance facility, and most
recently became sexual assault
prevention and response officer
and have served as acting chief
of staff for Commander, Navy
Region Hawaii.
When I first joined the Navy, I
didn’t see women in positions as
commanding officers, command
master chiefs or other senior
positions. So much has changed.
Today, women are part of the
leadership structure.
As we reflect upon Women’s
Equality Day, let’s consider how
far we have come in the military;
everyone has the opportunity
Our commitment must carry
on to the next generation. I know
we are making a connection.
Last year, my daughter, who
was ten years old at the time,
gave me a handwritten card
titled “I am a Girl. I can.” Turn
the card over and it says, “I can
make a difference. I can stand up
for what I believe in. I can fight
for what I believe in. I won’t let
anybody tell me what’s wrong
or what’s right. I’ll do things my
way. I’ll stick to what I believe
in to the end.”
Happy Women’s Equality
Day!

of Commander, Navy Region
Hawaii.

C. Forrest Faison, III
Shipmates,
Suicide is an issue that impacts
every member of the Navy and
Marine Corps family. Suicide
prevention requires our attention
and action throughout the year.
One suicide attempt within our
Navy and Marine Corps family
is one too many. We are a team
and we care for each other.
Every one of us is critical to our
mission. Help me ensure we are
doing all we can to help those on
our team who might be having
difficulties and might be thinking about suicide.
The death of a Sailor or Marine by suicide is a tragedy
that affects his or her family,
command and community. The
questions we ask ourselves in
attempts to understand what
happened in the aftermath are
important. The answers help us
more effectively intervene. But
looking back is not the whole
solution. We must also look
forward and be there for our
shipmates.
If you think that a shipmate is
having thoughts about suicide,
ACT Now:
•Ask them directly.
•Listen without judgment and
show that you Care.
•Treat them with respect and
make they are safely escorted
to the chaplain or to medical
for evaluation and appropriate
treatment.
Continued support is needed
after treatment as a Sailor or
Marine goes back into the command or as they transition out of
the Navy or Marine Corps.
We must constantly engage in
open communication with each
other, so that we are aware when
something warrants attention.
Prevention involves courageous
action in order to ensure that our
shipmates know we care and get
the help they need. It’s about
being there for every Sailor and
Marine, every day.
As your surgeon general, my
top priority is making sure that
our Sailors, Marines and their
families are healthy, ready and on
the job. I am committed to doing
all that is within my power to
care for our shipmates and ensure
we are doing all we can to, one
day, return them home safely.
Action starts with prevention,
which starts with you!

Shop, drop, and enroll — Burned up about dorm room expenses

Happy, helpful sophomores
garbed in blazing orange, whose
parents had been victims of “The

previous year, were awaiting our
arrival with huge rolling bins to
cart thousands of dollars worth
of unnecessary products up to
assigned rooms.

“Three decorative pillows or
just two?” my daughter Anna
asked in front of a colorful display of bedding at a local Homegoods store. It was 7:00pm, and
we had been shopping since the
stores opened that morning.
The first place we stopped was
the Apple Store, where I spent
over a thousand bucks in less
than 15 minutes buying Anna
a new laptop that was required
for her major. After that we hit
Zara, H&M, Macy’s, JC Penny,
Target, Walmart, Bed Bath &
Beyond, JoAnn Fabrics, TJ
Maxx and Homegoods.
“What’s another $20 bucks at
this point?” I replied to Anna in
utter defeat and near starvation.
“Definitely get three.”
Places of Worship
Anna’s roommate had already
moved in, and her side was so
spectacular, it looked like something straight out of a Pottery
Barn catalogue. We stared at
her shabby chic bedside table,
complete with a vase of peonies
and a trendy mirrored lamp.
There were whitewashed faux
ironwork wallhangings, cool
enlarged letters, clear canisters
the meat and potatoes of life
“Hi!” they shouted with rehearsed enthusiasm, shaking us
out of our road trip stupor, “I’m
Sean/Cassandra/Matt! I’d love
to help you move in!” They
filled two of the rolling carts
to capacity, then guided us like
sheep to slaughter to the dorm
elevators.
In the newfangled co-ed hallway, Anna found her room,
which was a “split double”
— one room separated down the
middle by a wall of closets and
dressers. This gave Anna and
her roommate their own private
spaces within one room.
filled whimsically with popcorn
and pretzels. Her rug was larger,
her bed risers were higher, and
she had way more than three
decorative pillows.
Concerned that Anna’s room
would look a cell at Rikers Island by comparison, we quickly
unloaded everything we’d already purchased, and left to find
the nearest Target. Two-hundred
more bucks later, we added
modern shelving, storage bins,
two strings of twinkle lights,
curtains, a coat rack, hangers,

DANTES faster exam reimbursement process INTERPERSONAL EDGE: Combining passion
by Erin Roberts
The Defense Activity for NonTraditional Education Support
(DANTES) Exams Reimbursement Program has changed
a reimbursement policy that
will expedite the exams reimbursement process for service
members, including active duty,
National Guard and Reserve.
The policy change includes
reimbursement of test fees for
the following exams:
* GED (beginning October)
* GMAT
* GRE General and GRE
Subject
* Praxis Core and Praxis Subject Assessment
* ACT and SAT
The online Electronic Reimbursement Request is now the
only option available for service
members to receive reimbursement to cover the cost of test
fees incurred for exams taken
at national or international test
centers. In accordance with the
policy change, DANTES will no
longer physically process any
paper-based reimbursement mail
received after Oct. 1.
“The department continues to
receive, on average, 25 paperbased reimbursement requests
in the mail each week,” said
Tom French, DANTES Education Programs. “The new online
process is more efficient and
beneficial for a service member
because payment is deposited
directly into their bank account
generally within 2-3 weeks after
submitting documentation and
receiving approval online.”
Service members can submit
the Electronic Reimbursement
Request online through the
DANTES website, www.dantes.
doded.mil.
On the DANTES website,
members should select “Examinations and Reimbursement
Eligibility” to get started. Access to the DANTES Exams

Q. I’m just starting out my
career and struggling between
picking highly paid jobs and
jobs that I think I will love.
How do I choose between
money and passion?
A. I advise my coaching clients to stop believing they have
to pick between money and passion. If you want both, you can
have both.
Sometimes readers write me
and say that they make no money
at their job and that they are perfectly happy about that. These
readers believe I have a bias
that everyone should want to
make money. The truth is there
are different strokes for different
folks. If you have experienced
that money won’t buy happiness
and don’t want a financially
profitable career, this is perfectly
reasonable.
If you are in the other camp
and believe people who think
money can’t buy happiness don’t
know where to shop ... well,
then, this column might help.
I find clients often give up on
what they want way, way too
soon. They look at what they
know, make up that they have
no options, and walk away from
getting it all. I am a big fan of
teaching clients to be both tenacious and creative.

A business myth is that jerks
make money and nice people
have to be poor, and this just isn’t
true. Nice people that adore their
work can make the most money
because everybody wants to
work with them.
When you get out of bed and
think, “Goodie gumdrops, I get
to go to work today,” it shows up
in your creativity, competency
and going the extra mile. You
are playing in the best sandbox
in the world. When you are
having a great time, others will
want to jump into your sandbox
as well.
Warren Buffett jokes that he
will stop working about five
years after he is dead. He also
talks about “the game” of money
- and that it is “the game” that he
adores. He is a perfect example
of passion and profit being a
good marriage.
When you do what you love,
you also benefit because you
retire early from “work.” To
paraphrase Buffett again, he
is fond of saying that waiting
to do what you love until you
have more experience is like
saying you will save up all the
sex you could have for when
you are old.
I’m also a fan of having kids
find opportunities to identify
passions early. Parents can then
encourage children to find environments where people are paid
to do these passions and find
any excuse to hang out there.
The best careers come from
feeding our earliest childhood
fascinations. Careers are where
we get to keep learning about
something that is profoundly
interesting to us.
The “rat race” truly is only
a rat race if you decide you
are only a rat. In reality, work
keeps us relevant, connected and
valued by the world around us.
If you want to receive a higher
paycheck, look for where your
skill set will be most financially
valued by others. More money is
simply a side effect of combining passion, skills, creativity and
working where you can be paid
more to have fun.
Q. I work with a coworker
who is usually wrong. I constantly have to point out the
mistakes in his reasoning. Is
there a better way to deal with
the office idiot?
A. Yes, if you argue with an
idiot, onlookers may not know
who is who! Rather than constantly debating his viewpoints,
let reality educate your idiot.

passion, don’t decide that it
is impossible in your field. I
sometimes joke that the difficult
may be hard, but the impossible
is just a goal that may take a
little longer. When my clients
and I keep staring at how they
can combine their passion and
make it profitable, we always
see innovative ways to combine
both love and money.

About Your Health
Navy medical researchers receive Team Award for Outstanding Research
Researchers from the Naval Medical Research Center
(NMRC) received the Military
Health System Research Symposium (MHSRS) Team Award
for Outstanding Research Accomplishment in the category of
infectious disease, Aug. 17.
Capt. Mark Riddle, from
NMRC, and his team were
the recipients of the award in
recognition of their role in successfully executing a multisite
clinical trial to determine optimum drug therapy against
traveler’s diarrhea, which has
been a leading cause of lost duty
days for military personnel for
more than 60 years.
Riddle was the coordinating
principal investigator of the
study entitled, “Trial Evaluating
Antibiotic Treatment in Travelers’ Diarrhea (TrEAT TD).”
Cmdr. Ramiro Gutierrez, head
of the Enteric Diseases Department at NMRC, accepted the
award on behalf of Riddle and
the team. Gutierrez was an associate investigator on the study.
“Capt. Riddle is an internationally recognized leader in
the field of traveler’s diarrhea,”
said Gutierrez. “He has published extensively on the acute
and chronic impacts to military
personnel, the epidemiological
characteristics, and the economic impacts these diseases
cause. The idea for this study
was something Capt. Riddle
and his collaborators at the
Uniformed Services University
of the Health Sciences (USUHS)
have been working on for some
time.”
The goal of the study was to
test the efficacy of three singledose antibiotic therapies on
the ability to return deployed
service members with debilitating diarrhea quickly back
to duty. Working with multiple
partners from locations around
the globe, Riddle and his team
were able to identify promising
treatments by documenting high
cure rates and rapid return to
duty while minimizing antibiotic exposure.
Prior to this study, there were
no well-developed clinical
guidelines for the treatment of
traveler’s diarrhea among deployed personnel. However, the
comprehensive research completed by Riddle and his team
led to the development of the
first evidence-based document,
Deployment Health Guidelines
on Management of Deployment
Diarrhea to help clinicians
treat patients with acute diarrhea. These guidelines will be
prospectively integrated into
education and training across
Navy Medicine and the other
military services to support improved force health protection
by significantly reducing the
number of lost duty days.
“When sick and in the field,
the warfighter wants to feel
better and get back to work
as quickly as possible to do
their job and support their mission,” said NMRC Commanding Officer Capt. Jacqueline D.
Rychnovsky. “The guidelines
developed by Capt. Riddle and
his team will assist medical
providers to prescribe the most
effective treatment possible using the fewest drugs at the lowest
cost, enabling a quick return to
duty with minimal side effects
or other sequelae caused by long
courses of antibiotics.”
Riddle and his team coordinated their work with the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research
Program at USUHS, the United
Kingdom Ministry of Defense,
and U.S. military overseas laboratories located in Peru, Egypt,
Kenya, and Thailand.
Studies with single-dose treatments have been done in the
past, according to Gutierrez, but
TrEAT TD was the first to compare multiple antibiotics head
to head in multiple geographic
regions and included the relatively new antibiotic rifaximin
as a single dose regimen.
Navy Medicine’s research
and development laboratories
engage in a broad spectrum of
activity from basic laboratory
science to field studies at sites
in remote areas of the world and
in operational environments. Research topics include infectious
diseases; biological warfare
detection and defense; combat casualty care; environment
health concerns; bone marrow
research and registry; aerospace
and undersea medicine; medical modeling, simulation and
operational mission support; and
epidemiology and behavioral
sciences. The capabilities and
global reach reflect the broad
mission of Navy Medicine’s
Research and Development
Enterprise.

by MC1 Corwin Colbert
USS MAKIN ISLAND, At Sea - In preparation
for deployment, the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), Amphibious Squadron
5 and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)
completed Composite Training Unit Exercise
Aug. 25.
The 14-day “deployment dress rehearsal”
event was the second of three integrated training
evolutions aimed at preparing the Navy’s amphib
warriors and the Marine’s expeditionary force for
deployment.
“COMPTUEX gives the ARG/MEU the opportunity to train together for a variety of missions,” said Capt. Brad Arthur, deputy commander,
Amphibious Squadron Five. “Rehearsing mission
planning and execution together promotes cohesion and understanding among the Navy-Marine
Corps team, and that’s vital to our success on
deployment.”
Makin Island ARG ships include Makin Island,
amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock
(LSD 45) and amphibious transport dock ship USS
Somerset (LPD 25).

“One year after we had our first
baby, Zebryna Rose, I was deployed, and returning to her was a
feeling I have never felt; seeing her
on the pier waiting for me, it was
incredible,” said Chief Information Systems Technician Zebulon

we’ve had our second girl Audriana Quinn while I was deployed,
and today I will be able to meet her.
This trumps that previous feeling;
I never thought I’d miss the birth

Capt. Joel Roos took command of Naval Medical Center

Acosta will now serve as
fleet surgeon for 3rd Fleet,
where he’ll oversee the medical
readiness of Sailors and Marines
aboard ships, submarines, and
aircraft stationed on the West
Coast, and Hawaii.
“The transition is a bitter-sweet
moment,” said Acosta.”While I
look forward to future opportunities to positively impact the
health and well being of our operational forces, I leave behind
an amazing organization.”
Roos, an emergency physician

Navy releases cause of USS Freedom’s
casualty that occurred July 11
SAN DIEGO - The Navy repotrted Aug. 28 that USS Freedom
(LCS 1) experienced a casualty to one of the ship’s main propulsion
diesel engines (MPDE) July 11, caused by a leak from the attached
seawater pump mechanical seal that resulted in seawater entering
the engine lube oil system.
The crew took action to address the leak, and Freedom returned
to homeport July 13 on her own power to conduct repairs on
a separate, unrelated issue. While in port, the crew performed
seawater contamination procedures. From July 19-28, the ship
returned to sea to complete its portion of the Rim of the Pacific
(RIMPAC) exercise using gas turbine engines rather than its
MPDEs.
Upon returning to port, Southwest Regional Maintenance Center’s
diesel engine inspector conducted a diesel engine inspection of
Freedom’s #2 MPDE on Aug. 3 and found significant damage to
the engine caused by rust and seawater. Based on initial assessments
from the inspection, Freedom’s #2 MPDE will need to be removed
and rebuilt or replaced.
The cost and timeline for the repair of the engine are unknown
at this time. An investigation by Commander, Naval Surface Force,
Pacific Fleet is underway to determine the definitive cause of the
casualty and examine all relevant elements of training and supervision.
“Given the engineering casualties on USS Freedom and USS
Fort Worth, I believe improvements in engineering oversight and
training are necessary,” said Vice Adm. Tom Rowden, commander,
Naval Surface Forces.
“
The recently completed LCS Review of manning, design, and
training looked at a number of Sailor performance and ownership factors, to include crew rotation, size and proficiency. From this work,
I believe we will be able to make immediate changes to help reduce
chance for future operator error. I’m fully committed to ensuring that
our ships and the Sailors who man them have the proper tools and
training they need to safely and effectively operate these ships.”

USS America hails Olson,
bids farewell to Baze
SAN DIEGO - Amphibious
assault ship USS America (LHA
6) hosted its second change of
command while moored at the
naval base here Aug. 26.
Capt. Joseph R. Olson relieved Capt. Michael W. Baze as
America’s commanding officer.
The ceremony took place in front
of 500 crew members lined up
in ranks and approximately 200
guests, including Lynne Pace,
the ship’s sponsor, and Rear
Adm. Daniel H. Fillion, commander, Expeditionary Strike
Group 3, the ceremony’s guest
speaker.
The event marked the end of
a successful tour for Baze, who
served as commanding officer
from May 2015 to August 2016.
In his speech, Baze reflected
on his experience as the ship’s
pre-commissioning XO and as
America’s second commanding
officer in the ship’s short history.
He expressed his appreciation
for the crew’s hard work and
dedication throughout America’s
journey from the ship’s christening in 2012 to Rim of the Pacific
2016.
“From the pre-commissioning
phase, where it was just a building and a couple of people, all
the way to ... this beautiful in-
strument of our nation’s power,
which you see around here today
... America’s Sailors and Marines
have [and will continue] to
fight and strive for greatness,”
said Baze. “The ship and crew
are here as a comfort to all
freedom-loving
people around the
world. They’re
fearsome and
[have proven]
they are going to
win every time.”

“My most sincere admiration and
my thanks go out to you all.”
Olson, who served as America’s XO since March 2015, said
his thanks to Baze and his wife
for helping the crew build the
legacy of this unique platform.
“On behalf of the officers,
ated a foundation of success on
America. Thank you both for
everything you have done.”
Addressing the drew, Olson
said the ship still has an important responsibility ahead. “My
challenge to the crew is simple.
We have many more tasks at
hand and in the coming year as
we prepare for deployment. We
must be ready. We must continue
to be outstanding representatives
and ambassadors.”

Who’s ready for the Twilight Trail Parade?
In addition to the parade festivities, we have
wonderful entertainment lined up at the finish!
The Bonita Alumni Band is a
four-piece cover band from all
around the Chula Vista area.
Originally founded by Isabel Rodriguez and Giancarlo
Dongo, two Bonita Vista High
School and Music Machine
alumni. The idea came about
from their love of performing
and singing songs in the car.
The two artists both show their
on and off-stage chemistry in
being a duo with positive energy and upbeat personalities.
Joining them are the incredibly talented Bianca Alcala
and Dean Caniban. Bianca
is an alum from Otay Ranch
High School and the traveling
guitarist for Bonita Vista High
School’s Vocal Music Department, currently studying at
San Diego State University.
Dean is an alum from Eastlake
High School, played in his
high school’s band, a multiinstrumentalist but primarily
spends his time playing percussion for different types of
performances around San Diego. Together, the four of them
want to continue to entertain
audiences of all ages and give
back to the community that
gave them so much.
Omarr’s weekly
ARIES (March 21-April 19):
Breathe new life into old routines. Paying close attention to
the tiniest things and adding a
unique touch could ensure your
future is better than average.
Make necessary changes in the
earliest part of the week.
TAURUS (April 20-May
20): Being selfish is necessary
sometimes. Do what is in your
best interests, not what will be
profitable or expedient for other
people. Use your diplomatic
skills within the confines of
business situations as this week
unfolds.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20):
Sound strategies include knowing when to keep quiet. Although
you may be flattered to be given
an opportunity to voice an opinion it may not be in your best
interests to do so. Play it close to
your chest in the week ahead.
CANCER (June 21-July
22): The next few days are the
best ones for networking and
making new contacts. Avoid
making major purchases or
commitments in the last half of
the week. The week ahead can
bring benefits if you sidestep
confrontations.
Astrological
forecast
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22):
Budget-conscious attitudes are
broken down by compassion.
No matter how strict you are
about spending someone could
wheedle a few dollars out of
your pocket in the week ahead.
Launch new projects as soon as
possible.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Give in with good
grace. You may need to compromise to achieve harmony with
others. Favors may be asked.
Even the most devoted followers
need an incentive or a reward for
their loyalty this week.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22):
Enjoy the fruits of your labors.
In the week ahead you might
receive applause for your generosity, leadership abilities or
wisdom. Make commitments,
promises and agreements as
early in the week as possible to
avoid disputes.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19): Exercise good taste.
Ask for the opinion of a friend
when shopping for decorator
items or house wares and you
won’t go wrong. Enjoy mental
challenges or focus on receiving
a valuable learning experience
this week.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22):
Keep the best and highest in
mind. Your wants and needs
might be well under control and
used to good purpose in the week
ahead. A generous spirit will
help you survive when people
are difficult to deal with.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18): It may be wiser to wait.
Reassess sensitive financial situations or lay out the framework
for future plans. There may be an
opportune time to seek professional advice but it is not a good
week to act on it.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21):
Focus on setting reasonable
goals this week. Put something
away for a rainy day this week.
You will learn that it is better to
save your pennies than to waste
them on passing whims. Loved
ones may share your ambitions.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March
20): Bolster the confidence of
others by being sympathetic and
kind. Knowledgeable people are
available and willing to provide
a helping hand. Valuable information can come your way in the
first part of the week.

AutoMatters & More: Formula E Makes Auto Racing History
just its historic role in the origins
of motor racing. It is also the
home of Michelin, a founding
sponsor of Formula E. Renault,
a major French automaker, is
also the manufacturer of the
successful Renault e.dams Z.E
15 Formula E racecars.
Round 7 of the FiA Formula
E Championship followed the
Long Beach ePrix (covered in
AutoMatters & More #432, entitled “Formula E: Accelerating
the Future of the Automobile”).
With the strong support of the
French government, the Mayor
of Paris and other officials, Parisians embraced this race. The
race tickets were completely
sold out well in advance.
The first major auto race conducted in well over 100 years on
the streets of Paris, France – the
“City of Light” – was electric.
The inaugural Formula E VISA
Paris ePrix was held on April
23, 2016 at the foot of the Eiffel
Tower.
According to Wikipedia, the
Paris-to-Rouen Le Petit Journal
Horseless Carriage Contest
was run in 1894. In the petrol
category, that race was won
by Albert Lemaitre racing a
Peugot – with a whopping 3 hp
engine! Considered by some to
be the world’s first motor race,
it not only pioneered organized
auto racing but also city-tocity endurance racing, which
became popular back in the
day. No doubt the demands and
stresses of competition helped
to accelerate the development
of automotive technology of that
era, just as Formula E is doing
today for electric car technology.
Then as now, racing improves
the breed.
Within the event compound,
Renault exhibited street and
racecars, and provided auto
racing-themed activities for
the fans.
The tight, 14-turn, temporary
street circuit was just over one
mile in length and located near
the Place de la Concorde. As always, all Formula E competition
– from practice to qualifying to
the race – was held on one day.
The lineup of drivers included
a who’s who from professional
auto racing series from around
the world, including Formula
One, IndyCar, the World Endurance Championship and the
Japanese Super GT Championship.
Race day was bitter cold, but
Fast-forward to 2016 where
Paris is significant for more than

Jan with the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport Formula E team cars
that did not chill the enthusiasm
of Parisians as they pressed
against chain link fences to get a
close look at the action on track.
They had several local drivers to
cheer for: Nico Prost, Jean-Eric
Vergne, Stephane Sarrazin and
Loic Duval, but the race would
be won by Lucas di Grassi of
Brazil – the same driver who led
the series after Long Beach.
He was driving one the two
team ABT Schaeffler Formula
E racecars. Impossible to ignore,
they were boldly colored in
bright green, yellow and red.
As with other open-wheeled,
Bases
Lowry Theater – NASNI, 619-545-8479
As battery technology continues to develop, the racing format
specifies that each driver is assigned two identical cars for the
race. Together they provide sufficient battery power to complete
each race of approximately 50
minutes. Changing cars mid-race
is part of the excitement.
Unfortunately, unlike for the
first two years of this series,
Long Beach is not on the expanded 2016-17 championship
A promise of Formula E is
that we can look forward to
seeing the cars eventually get
inductive charging as they drive
along the race tracks. That will
eliminate the need to change cars
mid-race, although that is kind of
cool. Maybe they’ll keep that.
