Dear School Families, Here’s hoping everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Our teachers had a great workshop on Monday and have been sharing new and exciting ideas! By all accounts, the St. Baldrick’s celebration was a huge success. An incredible number was raised to battle childhood cancers, and the turnout was equally impressive. The haircuts, music, food and drink made for an excellent combination! A great time was had by all, and we owe a debt of gratitude to Maggie Brett Valentine and all of the parent volunteers for their incredible, tireless work on all aspects of both events. Get ready for Alice in Wonderland, Jr. this weekend only at St. Barnabas School gym. Alice, the Mad Hatter, Cardsmen, Rock Lobsters, and many more will be delighting audiences at 7 pm both Friday and Saturday evenings and again at 1 pm on Saturday. The students have worked very hard on this production so please turn out to support them this weekend. The cast and crew will round out the weekend with a cast party on Sunday from 11:30 to 1:30 in O’Connell Hall. Since our weather appears to be holding, students may continue to wear gym uniforms while we are still above 70 degrees. Enjoy the weekend! Fifth Sunday of Lent–Year B
March 25, 2012
Read Sunday’s gospel, John 12:20-33.
Gospel Summary
Jesus announces that the hour is near when God will glorify him. Jesus knows that his earthly ministry will end
and that he must endure the cross before he returns to be glorified by his father. In a way to help his disciples
understand what must happen, Jesus compares the phenomena to a grain. A grain of wheat must die and
therefore no longer look like itself, in order for new life to come from it. Like the disciples, we only know the
finality of this world, but Jesus assures us that, like the grain of wheat, when we die, new life will come from
that death.
Reflection for Families
One of the most valuable lessons we can teach our children is how to let go, because no matter how much we
want things to remain the same, we know that change is a constant part of living. We can heal ourselves and
help our children at the same time when we make a conscious effort to find the “silver lining” in every dark
cloud. Only when we show our children that something good came from something that at first seems
completely awful, will they understand that something must die before something new can grow. Many
expressions such as silver linings and closing doors followed by opening windows, explain this concept; but
nothing gives it meaning like the examples from our own lives.
Bringing the Gospel into Your Family
Perhaps someone in your family or someone your family knows donated an organ when they died. This is a
beautiful opportunity to help youngsters and adults alike find the good from something that was at first hard to
accept. If your family is not familiar with organ donation, this might be a good time to learn how members
might make provisions to donate their own organs.

GIRLS BASKETBALL REGISTRATION
Registration for St. Barnabas Girls Basketball 2012 will be held on Tuesday, April 10 and Thursday,
April 12 in the gym lobby from 7-8:30 pm. St. Barnabas basketball is open to any girl in grades 4
through 8 attending St. Barnabas School. Tryouts for 6 through 8th will be Saturday May 5 and Monday,

The monthly aluminum collection will take place in the

strong link between chess and academic performance in a variety of areas, including
mathematics and language arts. Also, chess has been proven to enhance children's motivation,
concentration, focus, social skills, and creativity. Open to grades K-8.
Spring Session: 6 classes on Mondays, 2:50-3:50pm.
April 16 ± May 21, 2012.
No previous knowledge of chess is necessary. Each class will consist of a fun interactive teaching
period and guided practice time. Both new and returning participants are welcome and will get
to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. There will also be a
chess competition with prizes and a pizza party at the end of the session! As a special promotion,
each first-time participant will receive a free chess set to take home.

Learn to Earn a Free Apple iPad Camp
St. Rita of Cascia High School
Goals are for each camper to earn enough money to purchase his/her own Apple iPad, learn about
business, and have fun. Open to students currently in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades (co-ed). Camp runs June 1829 Monday – Friday 12:30pm – 1:30pm. Campers will put together a business plan and partner with local
businesses with the goal of raising enough money for each camper to purchase his/her own
iPad. Business owners will come to camp to speak about challenges they face, the value of customer
service and strategies they use to make money.

A walkathon on the St. Rita track will be held one day during camp to raise additional funds to go toward
the purchase of the camper iPads.

Queen of Martyrs Parish and School Celebrates 60 Years
We are excited to announce Queen of Martyrs Parish and School will celebrate our 60th
Anniversary All School/All Parish Reunion for alumni and current families on Saturday,
April 21, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, Merrionette Park, IL.
Tickets are available now and are $40 for adults and $35 for seniors. Price includes Full
Dinner Buffet, Bottled Beer, Wine, Mixed Drinks, Pop and Water. Entertainment
provided by “Rendition” and “The Opinions”, Split the Pot, Basket Raffles and more. All
proceeds to benefit Queen of Martyrs School.
