David Foran ______________________________________________ G reetings to all in Southwind! My guess is that we are all looking forward to this warmer weather. The month of May appears quiet until the twelfth of May, which is Mother’s Day. Whatever our relationship with our mother, she is the one who birthed and raised us. We are all a product of that relationship. Just imagine the mother of Jesus. We know the circumstances of that miraculous birth. I know He is Emmanuel (God with us), but He still was a baby and still needed a mother’s care. Remember your own life, and the things we did when we wandered off the straight and narrow. Who brought us back to that straight and narrow? Your mother . . . she was the one. Imagine when Jesus wandered off and was teaching in the temple. The panic, the worry and the concern where He was. Mary gave herself over to who Jesus really was, but He was still her child. Think of the Cross and Mary’s feelings. Just imagine the hurt and pain! Recall the things we did back in those early years of our youth. Those of us who still have parents who are alive, and even those of us who do not, we always remember that special connection this month. A very Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers in Southwind! At the end of the month is Memorial Day. It is the official start of summer. It appears to be more about barbecues and summer than remembering all who have served in our military. There are many military stickers on automobiles in this park, some World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Stop by and say thank you. Many blessings to all who served this country, and to all in Southwind! It included finger sandwiches, pastries, fruit, and, of course, tea. The tables were decorated so beautifully in blue with white lace, beautiful flower arrangements, china, and delicate decorations. Each person received a blue notebook and a seed packet of Morning Glories; yes, a blue packet of seeds. Planting seeds of any type of flower takes time, effort, patience, and work. The seeds take time to grow. One must water them, tend, care, and fertilize them so they grow into beautiful flowers of amazing colors and shapes. God indeed, created the vast array of magnificent colors and flowers so we may see and appreciate His creation. Each seedling needs tender care and love so it can grow into the plant it was created to be. It takes time and patience for the seedlings to grow, but the outcome is rewarding. God created us so that we may plant seeds into the lives of others He has placed in our path. This too takes time, care, patience, and love. Our parents, Pastor, friends and doctors have planted seeds into our lives. We in turn try to plant seeds into the lives of others. There are so many seeds we can plant: seeds of love, encouragement, kindness, comfort, and hope. Cards, emails, gifts, smiles, telephone calls, these are all seeds planted where they will grow and become a beautiful part of someone’s heart and being. As God’s Word says in Ecclesiastes 3: 1, 2, “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted.” Blessings to all at Southwind! She has been here for just over one year, coming from Dunnellon, FL. She made coffee for us, and we just leaned back and had a most wonderful conversation. Betty’s husband Jerry died on April 10 of last year, shortly after they arrived here. She still misses her life with him, and what an interesting life they had. They were married just short of fifty years. She has two daughters, one lives here in Palm Harbor and she sees her frequently. The other daughter lives in Plano, TX and will be visiting here very soon for about three weeks, while her husband is working in China. Betty also has two grandsons, two granddaughters, one great grandson, and one great granddaughter. She had their pictures in her computer. Betty and Jerry lead such an interesting life. Jerry was in the Air Force and worked with the Thunderbirds. Jerry was gone 280 days each year, putting on shows here in the U.S.A. and in many countries around the world. The wives of the group were called Thunder Brides. The Brides had the hardest jobs on the team, keeping the household going while their husbands were traveling. The Thunderbirds will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary in November 2013 in Las Vegas. Betty will be traveling there to see many of her old friends. Betty loves to play any kind of card games. She also said, “I love to sew, sew, sew”. She made her oldest daughter’s wedding gown, and the mother’s dress. She also seemed to be a whiz on the computer. I hope that she will be attending some of our events soon, so that she can meet some of our residents. Thank you, Betty, for such an interesting visit. A Special Thank You John and Florence Frejeris ________________________________________________ O n behalf of Florence and myself I want to thank all the residents who were concerned over my recent fall and recovery. Our sincere thanks to those of you who have sent cards, meals, made phone calls of comfort, visited me while I was in the hospital and rehab or stopped me while I was out walking, were greatly appreciated. I hope that by the time many of you return in the fall that I will be 100% and back doing what I did before this unfortunate accident. Thank you. 12 SOUTHWIND BREEZES MAY, 2013 N No complaints unresolved Services Directory AIR CONDITIONING SALES/SERVICE Barron's Air Conditioning......................................17 E & E Gliddon, Inc.................................................28 Modern Air Conditioning Service Co., Inc...............3 APPLIANCE REPAIR Action Appliance Sales & Service, Inc....................3 Bob's Appliance Repair...........................................4 ATTORNEY/PERSONAL INJURY/WRONGFUL DEATH Jeffrey S. The ladies top scorer was Evelyn Harrell with a score of 85.4. Next we had the top point winners. You receive points by just playing a round of golf and got anywhere from one to five points for your score. Then you receive points for a par, a birdie, an eagle and a hole in one. No one had a hole in one this year, which is very rare for our league. The total points’ winner for the ladies was Ellie Malloy with ninety-one points. The points’ winner for the men was Bill Welch with a total of 250 points. Bill Adams was reappointed league coordinator. The league wants to thank Ellie for collecting our prize money every week. We still play every Monday with a tee time of around 8:15 to 8:30 a.m. We just play an informal round to keep in shape. If anyone is interested in playing, just show up around 8:00 a.m. and we will assemble a group and have some fun and hopefully improve our scores for next season. The golf league will start up hopefully in late October. If interested in playing next year let Bill Adams know at 787-1255. You do not need to have a partner, we will find you one. Until next October, have a wonderful summer and keep golfing. Southwind Bowling League _____________________________________ T he Southwind bowling league concluded another successful year and fun time on April 5. The day started with a no tap tournament at Countryside Lanes. We then headed to Fairway Pizza for our league party. Prizes were handed out to all league members, depending on where your team ended up in the league standings. The top team in the league had the following members: Wyn Adams, Tom Capobianco, Phil Hargis and Anne Martin. Art Temple was also a member of that team, after Wyn could not continue to bowl, due to being injured. The top bowler for the men was Jimmie Martin and for the women was Anne Martin. Each player in the no tap tournament was awarded a prize, depending on your total score with your handicap added on. The top player for the tournament was Jimmie Martin. The league wants to thank Jack Harrell and Gail Mapes for helping run the league. Jack took over after Sue Richardson was injured and a great big thanks to Gail for being the treasurer of the league. The league also announced the new officers for next year. Bill Adams is the president and Gail Mapes will continue her wonderful job as treasurer. ....continued on page 20 SOUTHWIND BREEZES MAY, 2013 N 19 35 Certified years in business No complaints unresolved 35 Years in Monthly Media We are looking for more bowlers next year. The league starts on October 11, 2013 and ends on March 25, 2014. The games start at 9:30 a.m. at Countryside Lanes and it will cost $9.00 to play three games and league dues. The league dues are shared and distributed to each player at the banquet, depending on where your team finishes. The league also awards the top men and women bowlers for having the highest average, the highest series, the highest handicapped game and series, plus the most improved bowler for both the men and women. We need bowlers of any skill level. This is a fun league, although we are there to win, we are also there to cheer each other on, no matter what your skill level is. If interested in bowling see either Wyn Adams or Bill Adams. Like Uncle Sam always says, “WE NEED YOU” and so does Southwind bowling league. Night At The Races/ St. Patrick Day Celebration Bill Adams ___________________________________________________________________________ O n a beautiful St. Patrick’s Day Eve, we had over ninety guests, some came as far away as Ireland to enjoy our fourth annual night at the races. Our host for the evening was Mary Pat, whom took all the food orders and tickets for the drawings. We had a wonderful meal of hot corned beef or ham sandwiches, along with chips, pretzels, gold fish, candy, popcorn and all the soda and water you wanted, served up by Cheryl, Betsy and Jim. Then the fun began. If the yelling and screaming you heard, it was not from Ozona Blue this time. It came from our Clubhouse. We had all this noise coming from our guests yelling at the Bingo board. Our jockey was Jeff (call me stretch) Bartholomew, whom just happen to fly from Mexico to ride our five horses. Our track announcer, Jim (boom, boom) Cannon, just arrived in time from announcing at three different in tracks in Ireland, did a wonderful job of getting the horses to the post and keeping us informed of the results. Our tellers (really are bookies) for the evening were Jo (this is not Bingo) Bartholomew, Inga (I need money for a cruise) Wade and Paula (do not call me Dean) Buerger. Out banker, before being hauled off to jail, was Donn (Sticky Fingers) Buerger. This group just arrived from Atlantic City, to take our money. We would also like to thank Mardy and Bill for being our sponsors for the evening. Thanks to the President and First Lady of Southwind, Priscilla and Lyle, for handling the 50/50 raffle for the HOA. The winner of the raffle was Marie, watch out for the IRS, Marie. ....continued on page 23 20 SOUTHWIND BREEZES MAY, 2013 N 35 Certified years in business No complaints unresolved 35 Years in Monthly Media PLUMBING S E R V I C E S Specializing in Mobile Home Repipes & Repair CFC-057864 Did You Know We Service and/or Install Top Quality? 20 $ 10 OFF 1st Time C u • Disposals • Stoppages • Bathroom & Kitchen Fixtures • Water Heaters • Water Softeners • Reverse Osmosis Filter Systems 20 Call Us for All Your Plumbing Needs! 726-9193 or 942-9317 What Does Your Vapor Barrier Look Like? Jazz Band Concert/Potluck ________________________________________ T he Southwind Clubhouse was once again jumping to the music of the Hudson High School Jazz Band under the direction of Terry Adams (granddaughter of resident Wyn Adams). This was the second appearance of the band and enjoyed by all the residents who came to the Potluck Dinner. Rich and Debbie Conklin once again prepared a delicious baked chicken for everyone to enjoy. Of course the gourmet cooks of Southwind brought all their delicious dishes to accompany the chicken. There were eighty-five dinners served. Special thanks to the set up guys, Bill Welch, Rick Landon, and David Weatherly. The other helpers, Diane Garland, Nancy Woodling, and Sharon VerHage. Thank you to all of them. Lyle Neumann handled the 50/50 drawing that was won by Sharon Landon. Thank you to everyone who came.
