Connector Slaughterhouse-Five Chapter 9 Music • Context- On pages 185-188 a women named Lily in the hospital is reading former President Harry S Truman’s announcement to the world that an atomic bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima. Billy listened as the man he was sharing a room with wife who is Lily read next to Billy. • Connection- “Remember Charlie, remember Baker, They left their childhood on every acre, And who was wrong? And who was right? It didn’t matter in the thick of the fight.” That is a verse from one of the most popular songs from Billy Joel named, Goodnight Saigon. The song is about the vietnam war and that particular verse is talking about soldiers getting bombed and their bodies exploding throughout the land. Visual • Context- On pages 185-188, Billy listens to Harry S Truman’s speech on the bombing of Hiroshima being read on the radio as well as excerpts from the book, Destruction of Dresden. • Connection- To see an image of similar explosions, click here and here.
