PLASTIC BAG TAX SCHEME A 10-cent charge per plastic bag was introduced to encourage consumers to switch from using plastic bags to recyclable bags at canteens and bookstores. The tax proceeds go to the NUS Sustainability Fund that supports environmental projects run by NUS students. PROJECT BOX AND PROJECT TUMBLER Individuals who bring their reusable takeaway containers and tumblers when they buy food or drinks, will be rewarded with stickers that can be accumulated for discounts for subsequent food or drink purchases. NUS GIVES As a student, you can get involved in the many studentdriven activities that extend a helping hand to the less fortunate. The annual Flag Day organised by NUSSU raises funds for 20 beneficiaries under Singapore’s Community Chest, benefitting the elderly, children, families and individuals with disabilities. About 6,000 students spend this day seeking donations from the public across the island. There are many other avenues for students to be part of this culture of giving. The NUS Volunteer Action Committee (NVAC) is a non-profit student volunteer organisation that encourages student initiatives. GREEN NUS Actively driving a range of community projects, including overseas projects in countries such as Cambodia and Vietnam, NVAC is the first student group to be conferred the prestigious President’s Social Service Award as well as Singapore International Foundation Award. Many NUS students also organise independent overseas community projects through clubs and faculties. University-YMCA (Uni-Y) Singapore, founded in 2005, comprises chapters from NUS, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. Uni-Y service clubs all over the world aim to develop and empower youths to be leaders who will impact the local and international communities. Uni-Y has been conferred the Singapore Youth Award 2014, the country’s highest accolade for youths presented by Singapore’s National Youth Council, which recognises exceptional youngsters who enrich the hearts and souls of the community and bring distinction to the nation. nus.edu.sg/oes As a community, NUS continually finds ways to enhance the environmental sustainability of our campus. We roll out various initiatives throughout the year which promote and reinforce the concept and importance of campus sustainability. The Office of Environmental Sustainability organised NUS’ inaugural electronic waste (e-waste) recycling drive in 2014 which saw a staggering 34,400 kg of e-waste collected. To promote the recycling of used and unwanted electrical items, the drive comprised of an institution-wide e-waste collection and an awareness-raising event to educate the NUS community about e-waste and the harmful effects of improper disposal. NUS staff and students were encouraged to drop off their e-waste for recycling at the event, which saw a turnout of over 1,500 people. Our eco-passion is evident through our students, who are ardent green advocates. The NUS Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE) actively promotes environmental awareness and action on campus. Its first-of-its-kind environmental-cum-social clothes recycling campaign seeks to encourage the NUS community to recycle their old and unwanted clothes. Aptly named Green Wardrobes, clothes recycling bins were placed near student residences, and the items collected were recycled in developing countries. Proceeds went to the beneficiaries within the South West Community Development Council, voted for by the students themselves. The accommodations at NUS are tailored to meet the different needs of our students. Sheares Hall HALLS OF RESIDENCE RESIDENTIAL COLLEGES Living in the halls of residence is akin to having another family in school. As everyone is just a knock on the door away, all the late-night suppers and “mugging” (a colloquial term for studying hard) sessions foster a strong sense of camaraderie. Each hall has its own distinct culture and is led by an elected hall master and committee. Located in University Town (UTown), the residential colleges combine the vibrancy of campus living with exciting multidisciplinary academic programmes. Each residential college is led by a Rector, a Master and a team of faculty fellows. EUSOFF HALL eusoff.nus.edu.sg Eusoff Hall was previously known as one of the “sports halls” but has now made a name for itself not only in sports but also in cultural activities and community service. KENT RIDGE HALL kentridge.nus.edu.sg Kent Ridge Hall aims to provide a positive, homely and vibrant living experience. This cultivates the strong Kent Ridge Hall family spirit. KING EDWARD VII HALL kevii.nus.edu.sg King Edward VII Hall holds its place of pride as the hall with the longest and richest heritage. It remains the hall of choice for many medicine, dentistry and science students because of its close proximity to these schools. SHEARES HALL sheares.nus.edu.sg Sheares Hall offers only single rooms, so residents get their fair share of privacy. However, most residents keep their doors open to their neighbours. utown.nus.edu.sg/about-university-town/residential-colleges TEMASEK HALL CINNAMON COLLEGE Temasek Hall has a tagline that goes: “Some call it a hostel, we call it home”. Temasek Hall emphasises on cultivating close-knit relationships and building strong friendships amidst the hustle and bustle of university life. Cinnamon College houses the University Scholars Programme (USP), with University Professor Wang Gungwu as Rector and Director of USP Prof John Richardson as Master. RAFFLES HALL TEMBUSU COLLEGE temasek.nus.edu.sg raffles.nus.edu.sg Located in the heart of NUS, Raffles Hall is a stone’s throw away from various schools and recreational centres on campus and is well-connected by every shuttle service within NUS. Centred on a spirit of togetherness, the hall offers a “home away from home” for its student residents. STUDENT RESIDENCES Live with an international community of students in the residences. As residences offer more privacy, they tend to be quieter than halls. Currently, NUS has two residences: Kuok Foundation House and Prince George’s Park Residences. Ambassador-at-Large Prof Tommy Koh helms Tembusu College as Rector, with Assoc Prof Gregory Clancey as Master. COLLEGE OF ALICE & PETER TAN College of Alice & Peter Tan is led by eminent policymaker and corporate leader Prof J Y Pillay as Rector and Assoc Prof Adeline Seow as Master. RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE 4 Prof Choo Chiau Beng will oversee Residential College 4 as Rector with Assoc Prof Lakshminarayanan Samavedham as Master when it welcomes its first intake of students in August 2015. UTOWN RESIDENCE utown.nus.edu.sg/about-university-town/ utown-residence UTown Residence provides accommodation primarily to the graduate community in NUS. With facilities that cater to both single and married students, the Residence also has many common spaces, lounges and sky gardens that promote interaction among its diverse community. RIDGE VIEW RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE NUS’ first residential college outside of UTown, Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) is an interdisciplinary living-learning programme anchored on the theme of sustainability for first-year undergraduates. RVRC is headed by College Master Prof Adekunle Adeyeye. 37 WELL-SERVED ON THE LEARNING CURVE SAVOUR SAVOUR 36 THE CAMPUS IS DESIGNED TO EQUIP OUR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING TOOLS TO FACILITATE THEIR STUDY AND RESEARCH.
