I
“To Build a house is one thing, but to make it a home is quite another…”
– Louis L’Amour, Bendigo Shafter
am an unashamed Louis L’Amour fan, and have been for years. When I read
this line recently, I was struck by its similarity to Habitat’s work. Volunteers
build the houses, and partner families make them into homes. You, supporters
of our ministry, enable them to do so. In this, our 22nd year, Golden Crescent
Habitat for Humanity has set some audacious goals:
Homes: On page 2, read about our largest neighborhood to date with room for
18 houses. You can be part of it through volunteering or funding a brick.
Communities: Habitat couldn’t do what we do without our corporate and
individual donors and sponsors. In this issue, we feature a corporate sponsor
that has been with us since 2004. Read about the Keating family’s commitment
to making a difference in their community on page 5.
Every year we have an Open House to recognize our donors and volunteers.
This year’s event was held at our construction warehouse and ReStore. See who
was honored on page 7.

[3] Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity’s new
18-home neighborhood
This past October, Habitat supporters and community
leaders broke ground on Golden Crescent Habitat for
Humanity’s largest neighborhood to date, Koinonia. Located
on a 4-acre tract of land in the heart of Victoria, just off Arroyo Dr.,
Koinonia will be home to 18 Habitat houses, as well as the Marsha
Shanklin Community Garden. The land was generously donated by local
brothers, Melvin and Jay Lack, and their families.
Fundraising efforts are underway for infrastructure costs, which
include the street, electrical lines, sidewalks and more. In total,
infrastructure costs for the neighborhood are estimated at $405,000
and to date $125,000 has been raised. Based on current appraisals,
upon completion, each home will add an additional $94,000 to the
Victoria County tax base. Street construction began in January and
house construction is set to start this fall.
“We are thrilled about building the Koinonia neighborhood,” said
Cynthia Staley, Habitat Executive Director. “The name Koinonia
really defines what Habitat is all about—bringing people together in
Christian spirit. Not only will this neighborhood forever change the
lives of 18 families, it will make a significant positive impact on the
landscape of Victoria.”

Habitat Celebrates 100 Homes
with $100 Donations
“My people will live in a peaceful neighborhood—in safe houses, in quiet gardens.” – Isaiah 32:18
With a busy year ahead, the verse above seemed particularly appropriate for the 2016 Annual Giving
Campaign theme. We are carrying out God’s word at Habitat by building peaceful neighborhoods, safe houses
and our first-ever community garden. In 2016 we also celebrate a huge milestone—building our 100th house.
All this is done thanks to the support of Habitat’s donors and volunteers.
This year brings exciting plans in all five counties:
• DeWitt County: 7th Annual Habitat Hoopla event, first Habitat house in
Yorktown and renovating a Habitat house in Cuero for a new family.
• Goliad County: Looking for land and fundraising for the county’s third
Habitat house.
• Jackson County: The county’s first Habitat build kicks off this spring.
• Lavaca County: Launching A Brush With Kindness, a 10-home minor
repair program in partnership with St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Shiner.
• Victoria County: Building infrastructure for the 18-home neighborhood
Koinonia, plus building with three families.
Join us as we celebrate 100 homes by donating $100 as part of our 100 for 100
Campaign. Your gift ensures the construction of 100 more homes and the
future of our vibrant community. Visit www.goldencrescenthabitat.org/donate
or use the enclosed remittance envelope.
Young Professionals Growing
a Year After Launch
A year ago, a small group of young
professionals in the Golden Crescent
formed a volunteer group to meet
new people, while helping out the
community. Now this group is known as Habitat
Young Professionals (HYP). They build on
current Habitat projects the fourth Saturday of
the month and host a social the Thursday before
the build day. In August, HYP raised more than
$1,000 for Habitat with their inaugural Cornhole
Tournament at Moonshine Drinkery. The group
is in the preliminary stages of planning a Habitat
Global Village trip for Spring 2017.
If you are 25–35, or just feel young at heart,
join HYP. Please contact Katy at 361-573-2511
or [email protected]
for more information.

Raises Money
Habitat is currently looking
for families to build with
in DeWitt, Goliad,
Jackson, Lavaca
and Victoria
Counties. Please
call the office at
361-573-2511
for more
information.
for Koinonia Neighborhood
Thanks to the community’s generosity,
and matching gifts from Ranch Hand
Truck Accessories and Double D
Ranchwear, YOU raised a total of
$6,957! It was a great launching
point to raise more than $18,000
in 18 days—critical dollars that
will literally build the street in
our newest neighborhood,
Koinonia. Thank you to
everyone who donated and
to TownSquare Media for
spreading the word.
Local Business Helps with House Costs
To keep costs down, garages are not typically part of
a Habitat house. While building in Swan Crossing,
Habitat is required to include garages per the
neighborhood’s deed restrictions. Dan Gorfido with
Victoria Builder Supply has helped keep construction
costs down with the addition of garages thanks to his
donation of garage doors and installation labor for the
10 Habitat houses built in Swan Crossing. Community
partnerships like this allow Habitat to build safe,
decent, affordable homes for local families in need.

Spotlight on Sponsors:
The Keating Family
Teaching their children, Carter (17) and Kate (15), the values of working
hard and giving back to their community is what motivates Ben and
Kathleen Keating to support Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity.
Referencing his favorite Bible verse, Luke 12:48 “From everyone who has
been given much, much will be required,” Ben said that it is essential to be a
responsible business owner who has humility and supports the community.
“We want to instill in our children the importance of tithing, not just to
the church, but also to the community,” Ben said. “And it’s easy for us, as
a family, to give to Habitat because it doesn’t get much more direct than
helping local families.”
The Keatings have sponsored two houses. Their family business, Port Lavaca Auto Group,
sponsored Habitat’s Media Blitz build in 2005 and the Keating family sponsored another
home in 2007, along with families from their church small group. Port Lavaca Auto Group,
has been the presenting sponsor of Habitat’s past three Speaking of Sweat Equity events,
which bring celebrity speakers to Victoria as a way to raise essential funds for the affiliate.
When they sponsored their second home, the small group families all got together to paint
the Habitat house. Kathleen said it was rewarding to help but, more importantly, it was a
great opportunity for the kids
to see the investment Habitat
homeowners make in their homes.
“Our children saw the
homeowners’ satisfaction from the hard work they put into receiving their home,” she said.
“They learned that working hard for something ends up meaning more in the end.”
The Keatings also give back during the holiday season to Habitat families experiencing hard times, like one
homeowner who recently was hit by an uninsured motorist and incurred unexpected expenses. The Keatings
gather together to discuss how they can help the specific families. Then they shop together, wrap and deliver
the presents.
“We receive joy from giving back,” Kathleen said. “But I feel blessed knowing that these families, who work
hard but are having a rough time, will have a special Christmas morning.”
The Keatings look all year long for the right
opportunities to support the community.
Ben said he likes Habitat’s vetting process for
choosing families to build with—an application,
background check, home visits with the Family
Selection Committee, interviews and final
approval from the Board of Directors.
“I know that my investment with Habitat goes
to hard-working, grateful, deserving people who
aren’t afraid to work,” he said.

HabitatHero:
JR Rusch
Two and a half years ago, JR Rusch
started building with Habitat,
partially because of his love of
home building and woodworking.
Since retiring from South Texas
Electric Coop in July 2014, he’s
been a regular construction
team member on Saturdays and Mondays. Additionally, he volunteers at the
Habitat ReStore, where he repairs appliances and furniture for sale that would
otherwise have to be discarded. Combined, JR volunteers an average of 19
hours a week at Habitat. His wife, Dorothy, often volunteers at the ReStore as
well. “Giving back to the community through volunteering with Habitat is what I want to do in
my retirement,” he said. “The thanks I get from families I build with makes it worthwhile.”
How Our Affiliate
Builds Homes
Around the World
IN
CUERO
Habitat for Humanity’s model is based on Leviticus
25:35-36, a prohibition against lending money at high
interest to your poor neighbors. As part of this model,
each Habitat affiliate tithes 10 percent of all unrestricted
or undesignated revenue to Habitat for Humanity
International to build homes around the world.
Since 1994, Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity has
tithed more than $200,000, building 60 houses in Mexico,
Mozambique and Bangladesh. Incredible that our donors
have built 98 homes in the Golden Crescent and 60
houses around the world. These 158 families sleep in safe,
decent shelter tonight because of what YOU buy at the
ReStore and donate to this affiliate.

Meet the Families
Lisa Kitchens
and her two
daughters—
La’Kerria (19)
and La’Kyle (15)
—will build their
Habitat home
in Victoria. Lisa
has worked at
La Villa Nursing
Rehabilitation for 14 years and believes
that if you work hard, you deserve the best
in life. That is why she is excited to build a
Habitat home to provide a safe home and
future for her family.
Meet the three Habitat partner
families who will build this Spring.
Dalia Sanchez, a cook
at City Bakery for
three years, will build
her Habitat home in
Victoria. Dalia originally
came to Habitat because
she knew the program
helped families and
wanted a safe home for
her and her two sons, Rey (17) and Jacob (9).
Chris and Connie Solis will be the first Habitat family in
Jackson County when they build their home. Chris is
a claims supervisor at Wal Mart and Connie is working
toward her business finance degree at Victoria College
while homeschooling their two children, Kalrya (10) and
R'Gina (5). They look forward to moving into their new
home with a backyard where the girls can safely play.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Before Liz Brown ever applied to become a Habitat
homeowner, she volunteered on the job site to build
someone else’s home. This experience was part of the
journey that led her to Habitat. Brown moved into her own
Habitat house in June after spending countless hours of
hard work and sacrifice building a safe, decent home for her
two daughters.
The first day of Habitat’s new build in September, Brown
was found on the job site volunteering to build the home of
her neighbor, Kinsey Layton. Even though she has reached
her goal of being a homeowner, she continues to help others
reach their goals as well. She is the essence of Habitat’s
mission of building homes, communities and hope.

When the Board of Directors agreed that the verse above should be Habitat’s theme for the year, little did we
