DSDC FOUNDATION
What we do, why we do it, and how you can
help.

!
!
Empowering youth to think
independently and speak with
confidence.
!
Rene Descartes and Baruch Spinoza came to the Dutch Republic in order to be able to speak
freely about their ideas. The DSDC Foundation stands in this proud tradition of the Dutch
freedom of speech. We believe a democracy cannot fully function without a healthy public
debate. The leaders of the 21st century must be able to freely exchange ideas, challenge
paradigms and inspire cooperation. It is our mission to sharpen the minds of future leaders.
!
The art of debating about a broad range of social, ethical and political issues is both
instructive and inclusive for everyone eager to improve. For the last fourteen years, the
DSDC Foundation has been a leader in debate education. We select and guide Dutch
students to the World Schools Debating Championships and, in 2013, we co-founded the
Roosevelt World Schools Academy, a unique debate academy for students from all over the
Netherlands. We hope you will support us in our efforts.

Selecting the team
Each year, over 100 students from up to the 5th form of VWO apply to the Roosevelt World
Schools Academy. Their applications are carefully vetted. We select 48 students based on the
following selection criteria:
!
• Record of participation in parliamentary debate events with good results.
• Record of extracurricular activities, in particular debate, diplomacy or public service.
• We aim to represent students from all over the Netherlands, also from schools without a
tradition in parliamentary debate.
!
At the Academy, 14 students are selected for the pre-pre-selection. From here on, students
attend weekly sessions to hone their craft. The pre-pre-selection is a two-month track that
focusses on the fundamentals of public speaking, argumentation and strategy. Only 7
students proceed to the pre-selection; a period that lasts four months and includes attending
the European Championships. Based on team dynamics and personal growth, the final team
of 4/5 students is selected.
“Every weekend I see myself improve.
The best part: I enjoy the hard work,
because it is always done in such a
stimulating environment.”
- Urmi Pahladsingh, Stedelijk Gymnasium
Nijmegen
Coaching and content
Our program asks a lot from the talented individuals that participate:
!
1. Weekly Saturday sessions with lectures, exercises and debate. Sessions last the full day.
2. Working through our tailored skills-based Debate Curriculum, working on public
speaking, argumentation and debate strategy.
3. Weekly reading on topics from the social sciences and humanities, including
economics, ethics, law, international relations and political science - complemented by
topic-specific sessions taught by experts.
4. Preparation of cases proposing and opposing motions such as Governments should never
bail out big companies, Civil liberties may be comprised for security, and Western Government
should arm pro-Western rebel groups in dictatorships. Speakers are asked to construct
!
!
logical arguments and marshall empirical evidence to make their case.
“DSDC gives people an unparalleled
opportunity to get new ideas,
challenge the opinions of others and
have our notions challenged, too.”
- Uche Odikanwa, Rijnlands Lyceum Oegstgeest
“Preparing for a world championship
is an intense process, but very
rewarding. … I am sure that the road
to Thailand will be a memory that lasts
a lifetime.”
- Emma van der Horst, Willibrord Gymnasium
Tournaments & Achievements
Every Team Netherlands works towards the World Schools Debating Championships
(WSDC). WSDC has been held more than 25 times all over the globe. It has established
‘World Schools style’ debates, held in English, as the leading format in high school debate
around the world. Today, more than fifty delegations of the most talented students from all
over the world come together to debate topics with global relevance at the tournament.
!
Team Netherlands is one of the top non-native teams of the tournament. We received the
prize for ‘Best English as a Foreign Language Team’ in 2010 and 2011. We delivered the ‘Best
English as a Foreign Language Speaker’ in 2013. We have made the top 16 teams in 2008,
2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
!
Furthermore, the team attends the European Championships as practice. The team made the
finals in 2009 and 2012. We delivered the ‘Best Speaker’ in 2012.
!
“WSDC revolves around continually
challenging yourself, reflecting on
what you’ve done and how you did it.
(…) It has made me an independent
person - it teaches every one who
takes part to be a better citizen of the
world.”
- Amy Bakx, Wolfert Lyceum Tweetalig
“My teammates are wonderful and
supportive. We have not only built a
strong team, but friendships too.”
- Emma Lucas, Stedelijk Gymnasium Nijmegen
Co-organizing the annual Roosevelt
World Schools Academy
!
In 2013, we entered into a partnership with the Netherlands Debate Institute, Cogency and
University College Roosevelt to organize the Roosevelt World Schools Academy.
!
1. An annual, weekend-long academy for the 48, carefully selected Dutch high-school
students.
2. Students receive extensive Masterclasses and a partake in a tournament to test their
skills.
3. All Dutch VWO students in the third, fourth and fifth form can apply!
4. More than two times as many students apply as we can select
5. First round of selection for the Dutch national team.
!
In previous years, we hosted an annual English-speaking tournament that carried our
organization’s name, at which schools from all over the Netherlands participated.
Goals for 2014
!
!
1. Prepare the Dutch National Team for the World Schools
Debating Championships 2014, and participate successfully
!
At the core of our foundation is the aim to coach the Dutch national debating team towards a
successful participation at the World Schools Debating Championships. So far, this goal has
been accomplished; the Netherlands is now one of the top-ranking countries, often reaches
the final rounds, and took home the trophy for the best ‘English as a foreign language team’
in 2010 and 2011. This year, the team will travel to Thailand. The head coach will guide them
on their travels, and three adjudicators will contribute to the quality of the tournament.
!
!
2. Organize a successful edition of the Roosevelt World
Schools Academy and select the team for 2015
!
In May 2014, after a long selection procedure, we will welcome the best Dutch high school
debaters from all over the country at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. There, they
will enjoy a weekend full of advanced training and intense practice, while simultaneously
undergoing selection for the 2015 team. In addition, the students will learn how to educate
their peers, so that students across the country can familiarize themselves with debating and
can profit from the offered expertise. The foundation contributes to the organization and the
design of the workshops, together with the Cogency, the Netherlands Debate Institute, and
University College Roosevelt.
!
!
3. Professionalize the governance and work practices at the
foundation
!
Over the past few years, the foundation has grown tremendously in terms of quality, scope
and ambition. To support these more advanced activities, and to make sure that we can
continue to empower students regardless of their background, we are constantly
professionalizing our organization. This year, we are further formalizing the governance
structure to guarantee continuation and stability, start internal training programs for our
future coaches, deepen the ties with our partners, and kick-off a new website enabling us to
better showcase our activities and attract funding.

Priorities for further resources
!
First (±5000 euros): make sure the volunteers don’t have to contribute to their volunteering, cover full
costs (participation fee, travel costs) required for tournament participation (these costs are currently
shared between volunteers and participants; covering them will thus alleviate financial pressure on
both groups)
!
Second (±2000): financial support scheme for participants (need-based) —> we will not cover full trip
(we think its fair that participants, where they can, contribute) but would cap total participation costs
at approximately 500 euros (with financial aid being divided based on financial need)
!
Third (±1000): Bootcamps —> be able to compensate (travel costs, meals, etc.) external trainers and
experts for their volunteering and support during the training bootcamps throughout the year
!
Fourth (±2000): Further aid to participants + scholarships for the Academy for students living far away
