September 14th-September 18th Message from the Principal Hello Parents and Guardians, In response to parent requests, Crofton Middle's school-wide goal this year is to provide and instruct all students in every class to write down their daily homework assignments in their agenda book. Students are also encouraged to place each of their homework assignments in their “RED Take Home Folder” so that all homework assignments are located in one area. All students are also provided with a 30 minute period at the end of the day called, “SOAR Extension. This is a great opportunity for students to work on their homework assignments and seek out extra teacher help if needed. We hope you and your child are finding the above systems helpful. As always, we continue to welcome your suggestions. Principal’s Honor Roll and Honor Roll Interims will be distributed September 30. I know many of our students work diligently to earn either Honor Roll or Principal’s Honor Roll. The expectation for AACPS is the following: HR: A’s, B’s and 1 C as long as the GPA equals out to be 3.0. No U’s PHR: All A’s and no U’s Attention 8th Grade Parents On Oct 2, 2015 your son/daughter will be attending a county sponsored field trip to the Centers of Applied Technology (CAT). If you child will attend Arundel HS they will visit CAT-North, if your child will attend South River HS they will visit CAT-South. Students and faculty were asked for their support to help build awareness of the importance of literacy and to continue to encourage the strong culture of literacy we have at our school! Throughout the entire week, students were challenged to, "Imagine the Impossible," this years International Literacy Day theme. This thought-provoking theme was chosen because “dreams inspire learning and create meaningful and long-lasting motivation.” Here’s what Mrs. Wein’s 6th grade students’ had to say… “To me, literacy means to express yourself with reading and to dig deep into a book and to write with no boundaries. “ -Mickala Stratton. “Literacy to me means being able to read and write. ..The phrase “Imagine the Impossible” means to strive for your goals and be the best you can be. Lifetouch offers a variety of portrait packages and background styles for your selection. Fall picture day is 9/25/2015 during your students math class. Each student has received a picture day order form. If your child did not receive an order form, additional copies are available in the school office. In the interest of security, check or money order is the payment type recommended. Parents preferring to pay with credit card may prepay on line by visiting MyLifetouch.com. Simply follow the on line instructions for making credit card payments. If cash is your preferred method of payment, please include the exact amount in your payment envelope. Photographers will not be able to open payment envelopes to make change for cash customers. ALL students will need to be photographed for yearbook and administrative purposes, but only those submitting a completed order form to the photographer on picture day will receive a portrait package. Permission slips & $30 per student are due to first period teachers by Friday, Sept 18. 8th graders will be going to Gettysburg to tour the battlefield on Wednesday, Oct. 7th. Chaperones are needed!! Attention ALL 8th Grade Parents On October 2nd ALL 8th grade students will be going on a field trip to the Center of Applied Technology. It is expected that ALL 8th graders attend this field trip and it is part of the school counseling essential curriculum. If your child is districted to go to Arundel High School they will be visiting CAT-NORTH. If you child is districted to go to South River High School they will be visiting CAT-SOUTH. Students will be touring the school facilities and will participate in four different rotations. Please fill out a permission slip (attached) and return it to Ms. Worsham in the school counseling office. There in no cost for this fieldtrip. As you know, fall is the Magnet application season for current fifth and eighth graders in all of our schools. Thus, the Office of Advanced Studies and Programs is requesting to have the link to the Magnet Program Information Sessions placed on the school’s website to promote access for all interested students and families. To facilitate the process, we are working with web services to place a link in English and Spanish on the front page of your school’s website. Parent meeting on: September 15th and 16th at 7:00p.m. in the school media center. One parent/guardian MUST attend one of the meetings in order to sign up a student for auditions. A reminder to all Chorus students that are planning on auditioning for All County Chorus - Registration forms are due to Mr. Abbot no later then next Wednesday September 16th. Help sessions for the audition will before and afterschool please be sure to look at Blackboard or see Mr. Abbott for the dates and times. band and strings news - All students should bring their instrument, music folder, and method book every class from now on. If you have any questions about materials needed please send me an e-mail at [email protected] or refer to the handbook that was sent home. - All Band & String students have been assigned an instrument locker located in Mrs. Hood's room, Rm. 409. After students arrive to school, they are to place their instrument in the assigned music locker. -All instruments must be taken home every day at dismissal as we have over 250 instrumentalists and only 150 available music lockers so students will be sharing the space. - Practice Charts will begin this Sunday, September 13th. The practice chart is bi-weekly and both the chart and due dates are attached as well as on Blackboard as a reference. - Date corrections: There have been two mistakes found in the Band/Strings Handbook under the Tentative Schedule of Events. First, the SRHS Feeder Concert will be November 12th, not November 22nd. Second, the Kings Dominion Field Trip will be Saturday, April 23rd, not Friday, April 22nd. This discount is good for the students and their parents as well as the faculty and their spouses. The Big Fish Grille is starting this campaign to garner support for local independent business and to show appreciation to our local school system. We believe that education is the solution to so many things that challenge our way of life. Many of our employees have young children and our general manager's wife is a teacher with a degree in elementary education and special needs education. We also understand that the season of life our students and parents are in can be challenging. That is why we are offering this discount not only for dining in but for pick up orders as well. We know that time spent away from the home can be fragile during the school year. We hope to establish a relationship between our small business and our local school system for years to come. We look forward to partnering with them in all of the events that occur throughout the school year. In return we hope that we can be the ones they turn to when they don't want to cook and do the dishes! To whom it may concern: Crofton Middle School is equipped with a video camera system. It covers selected interior and exterior public portions of the building and grounds. It is NOT monitored constantly, but it is monitored during emergency situations. During certain events, when the safety or security of students may be in question, authorized personnel from local, state, or federal police or fire emergency units may be given access to view images projected on the camera system. If you have any questions about the system, you should call the Supervisor of School Security at 410-222-5083.
