Taxes
O
nce again we will have Tax-aides
available for those who could use some
help preparing their 2015 Income Tax Returns.
Thanks to the AARP Tax Aide Program,
cosponsored by the IRS, help is available
FREE for seniors, disabled and low-income
folks.
Trained tax preparers will be ready to provide
answers to tax questions, help fill out tax
returns, and check your return for accuracy.
Tax aide assistance is intended to help older
adults who either find it difficult to complete
their tax returns or who wish to learn how to
fill them out. It also makes them aware of any
special tax provisions or changes in the tax
laws to which they may be entitled, such as
those governing pensions, sale of a home, and
tax credits for the elderly and disabled.
Volunteers will also help prepare returns for
those in nursing homes.
Tax aides will be available Tuesdays and
Thursdays beginning February 2nd.
Call
387-0222 beginning January 4th to schedule
an appointment.

H
appy New Year
to you all.
It
amazes me that 2016 is
already here.
This
month I thought I
would highlight some
new programs and
fundraisers that we
have coming up this
year. One new program
I am very excited about is the Singles Game
Night on Thursday, January 21st.
This is a new group that has long been needed
at the Camano Center. We are kicking off our
Singles Night with BUNCO. Bunco is very
popular and we thought a great way for everyone to get introduced. If you know how to
play Bunco or have the game that we could
borrow we would really appreciate your help.
Many singles have come up to me and asked
for a singles group. This is a great opportu-
nity to meet and network with other singles.
We are looking for some singles to step forward and assist us in running this new group.
Ideas for this group are game nights, line
dancing lessons, and special trips on our bus.
If you have any questions please feel free to
give me a call or if you could help teach us to
play BUNCO. PS This is not a cash game, but
we might have a surprise for the winner.
A new and exciting fundraiser coming up on
February 6 is our Monte Carlo Night. We are
going to be setting the Center up like a casino/
club in Monte Carlo. In the Jensen and Craft
Rooms we will have gaming. The Education
Room will feature our no host bar and tasty
hors d’oeuvres by our own caterer, Adin Collver. In our main room will be live music and
dancing featuring the Swing Nuts. Tickets will
be $75 per couple or $50 for a single ticket.
Your ticket will include gaming tokens for the
gaming rooms, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a
A Magical Afternoon with Santa
L
ittle smiling faces filled the room at the
Afternoon with Santa at the Camano
Center on Tuesday, December 8th. Over 250
children (and their parents) explored the Center with options like face painting, balloon
sculptures, crafts, art projects, cookies, hot
chocolate, holiday cookie decorating and of
course, Santa, his elves, Mrs. Claus and Mr.
Bear.
Each child got to visit the “the lost toy box” to
pick a stuffed animal to take home. A free
community event like this would not be possible without the many volunteers who gave
their time and energy for this annual holiday
event. A sincere “thank you” to all of the volunteers who helped spread holiday cheer to
many of our Stanwood and Camano families. A special thank you to the Law Offices
of Julie M. Herber and the Camano Island
Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the
event.

chance to kick up your hills dancing to sounds
of Swing Nuts. Suggested dress is cocktail
party attire. We are very excited to bring you
this fun evening. Please plan to join us.
Prizes, not cash, will be award to the top three
money gaming winners.
Next month our newsletter will feature a survey to better understand the needs and the programming that you our members would like to
see. And don’t forget we have lots of jazz
concerts, Camano Junction Dances, and some
other surprises coming up this spring.
Happy 2016!!!

Scoop
I
t seems that the
New Year brings
with it a time for reflecting on the past
year and times gone
by. It is hard to believe than in February I will
have been working at Camano Center for 4
years. I feel very thankful for the opportunity
to be of service to the Camano community and
to work with such a great group of people here
at the Center. I see familiar faces almost every
time I go into Stanwood. We have several
lunch guests who come from Stanwood. We
even have a couple that come all the way from
Anacortes.
I am also happy to say that many more people
are ordering meals to go. I know that not everyone enjoys cooking or can find the time.
This can be a convenient and inexpensive solution for those people. If this sounds like
something you might like to try, just give us a
call and let us know how many meals you
would like. Of course if you a feeling the urge
to be social everyone is welcome to come for
lunch. We ask everyone to try and get here by
11:45. Having said that, if you are a bit tardy
we won’t ever turn you away. Hope to see
you here in the New Year.

T’ai Chi - Looking for Better Balance?
A
re you looking to gain better balance?
So many seniors are seeking a form of exercise
that addresses that need and many other issues
of the health and fitness of those of us who are
over sixty years old.
Jeanne Reynolds has found the need for better
balance to be a consistent concern of the majority of seniors.
There is one form of movement that over time
has shown to be the most effective tool in the
fitness box for bringing improved balance – it is
the practice of T’ai Chi.
After just three months of weekly classes most
students discover not only better balance but
also many of the other benefits that years of research have confirmed.
Stanford, Harvard, John Hopkins, South Florida
and other universities and research facilities
have discovered, from years of investigation,
the positive effects from the practice of T’ai Chi
in addressing such issues as complete reversal
of Type Two Diabetes, Neuropathy, Relief from
Arthritis, Weight Management, Lower Blood
Pressure, improved circulation, stress reduction
and the most recent studies showing improved
memory and prevention of Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Jeanne Reynolds, a certified instructor, is currently offering T’ai Chi classes at the Camano
Island Center every Tuesday morning at 9:30
a.m.
She also instructs a class, Body Basics for Seniors at Camano Island Center every Thursday
morning at 9:30 a.m. Her book, “Body Basics
for Seniors” will be published in the spring of
2016.
Both classes are based on over thirty years of
teaching experience. She has taught at senior
centers, athletic and tennis clubs, corporations,
hospitals, engineering faculty at Stanford University, California State Board of Psychiatrists,
a Washington State Labor Agency, and Skagit
Valley College.
Jeanne Reynolds has observed the multiple
benefits of the practice of T’ai Chi for seniors at
any age – it is never too late to begin - for
greater energy and fitness, and for a youthful
and vital attitude toward improved and sustained health and wellness.
Jeanne Reynolds’ DVD, “T’ai Chi for Relaxation and Health” is available on Amazon.com.

Drought Resilience with Native Plants
H
ow much time and energy did you spend
watering your yard last summer? Wouldn’t it be nice to have a drought-resilient landscape? Several choices exist for creating a beautiful yard that can withstand weather extremes,
and one option is planting native plants.
Are you interested in holding a breakfast
business meeting? Are you planning a wedding, anniversary or birthday party? Contact
Adin at the Center! Adin is our Hospitality
Coordinator and will do a superb job of catering for any occasion! Call 360-387-0222
Tuesday and Thursdays 11-3 p.m.
Plants thrive where the sun shines enough, the
soil provides the right nutrients, and the rains
come often enough at the right times of the year
for each kind of plant. Native plants have
adapted to local conditions (climate, soil, native
animals) over many generations, and are better
able to handle extreme weather events like the
2015 summer drought. Some younger native
trees and shrubs didn’t survive that summer, but
most did without any help from us. Would you
like to have that kind of resilience in your landscape? Not to mention beauty and attractiveness
to birds and pollinators?
Native plants are available from some local
nurseries, conservation districts, Washington
Native Plant Society sales, and Master Gardener
plant sales. Plant them in spring or fall when the
rains are falling. Bare-root plants (young plants
without soil around their roots) will be available
soon and should be planted within a week of
being brought home. These are generally less
expensive than container plants.
Medical Drivers Needed When choosing native plants, do a little research
on where they like to live (see Resources below). Do they like rocky, sandy or clay-like

Contact Connie mind.
Monday through Thursday 1:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m. at the Camano Center 360‐387‐0222 Regularly water your new native plants for the
first 2 – 3 years during dry periods to help them
establish strong root systems. (A rain barrel or
cistern could help with this.)
Wean your native plants off of regular waterings after the first couple of years.
Protect your native plants from deer and rabbits
until they are large enough to withstand nibbling and rubbing.
Plant with care around your septic drain field. If
you would like to add native plants near or over
your drain field, contact Island County (on Camano: 360-387-3443) for a brochure entitled
“Landscaping Your Septic System”.

(Alderwood, Cascade, Northgate, etc.), including lunch at one of the many fine restaurants in
the area. Try something new, like the Hibulb
Cultural Center, or the Pilchuck School of
Glass, or maybe an old favorite, like Fairhaven
Historic District in Bellingham.
Remember, wherever we go, we have fun!
Looking forward to seeing you on one or all of
our 2016 trips!

H
oliday Cheer prevailed at
the Volunteer Open House.
In December the Center hosted an
informal holiday get-together for
the volunteers from the Center
and Thrift Shop. Stuffed mush-
rooms, a beautiful meat and
cheese platter, champagne cocktails were on the menu. Lots of
laughter and good times were had
by all.
